Red Flame Hundred Cats by Horiren x Force of Art

Taiwanese tattoo artist Horiren blends two very different classic Japanese characters into a cute yet fierce hybrid with his Red Flame Hundred Cats resin art toy produced by Force of Art.

At first glance the piece appears as a Godzilla-style head bust with a curious texture. A closer look reveals that the Kaiju beast is actually made up of a seemingly endless pile of sleeping cats. The draw here is not so much the unusual concept, but the execution.

Rather than repeating one or a handful of cat poses, Horiren has out done himself with different poses, some with bell collars, some with bows, some without. The design has an organic feel with the cats nestled snugly against each other, some reaching across another. The cat transformation is extremely thorough, with a lazy, translucent orange cat doubling as the beast’s tongue. Red balls of yarn make a playful cameo as well. One could stare at this piece for minutes at a time and see something new with each glance.

Did we mention the light-up feature? yes, thanks to LED’s, the snuggly cat kaiju’s eyes, tongue and fins light up.

The Red Flame Hundred Cats OG edition resin art toy (8.86″ x 6.85″ x 7.87″) is available for preorder from Force of Arts retail partner GetUrToys for $138. Don’t snooze on this one as the preorder closes on Tuesday (3.22) —perhaps slightly earlier since Force of Art is based in Hong Kong.

Old Chuck by Ron English

Ron English takes on the lovable Charlie Brown with his new Old Chuck carded resin figure for DKECON 2022 (3.25 – 3.27). Father Time has not been kind to the chuckster, endless worrying is apparently a recipe for wrinkles upon wrinkles. English’s vision is instantly recognizable, a bit gnary and bound to get a chuckle or two. The clever ‘Ok Doomer’ tag line fits with the character and scores points for the word play. Nicely done.Old Chuck follows English’s Star Wars-themed Grin figures released by DKE Toys over the past few years.

Nature Calls : Wanderlust by Sad Salesman

Sad Salesman will open his Nature Calls solo at Clutter Gallery this evening (3.19) with a collection of short-run resin edition. Of all the whimsical characters on offer, Wanderlust stands out, heads, shoulders, and antlers above the rest. The triple treat of a pink sasquatch-like character, green merman, and yellow antler guy (technical term) is a 14″ showcase of Sad Salesman’s artistry

An edition of ten, the Wanderlust resin sculpture (14″) is available now via Clutter to those on the preview list for $850. Beyond Wanderlust, there are several smaller pieces in the show including the adorable Clamboi (ed. of 25, $75).

Korea-based Circus Boy Band’s signature mix of retro whimsy with a dash of quirky reaches for the stars with the new Spaceman vinyl art toys from Xinghui Creations. Drawn from a bygone era, Spaceman explores the universe in a simple, retro spacesuit with a helmet, life support system and the ultimate symbol of curiosity, a magnifying glass. Instinctoy and Pop Mart continue their string of collaborations with a special Mega Space Molly x Instinctoy design. Set for release in both the 400% and 1000% formats, Instinctoy’s Hiroto Ohkubo brings his signature design elements to Kenny Wong’s ever-popular Molly by incorporating the brand’s Liquid symbiote mascot and special surface finishes.

Rather than being molded into the Space Molly figure, Liquid can come and go as the collector wishes thanks to a removable magnetic design that attaches to the rear of the helmet. Taking double advantage of this design approach, both Mega Space Molly figures include white and black versions of Liquid.

Always on the forefront of sublime special effects, Ohkubo brings the Aurora chrome plating (air hoses, boots, camera lens) and subtle color shift technology to Molly’s translucent suit. Both effects flow seamlessly into the the explorer’s cosmic environment.

The Mega Space Molly x Instinctoy 400% (11.61″) / 1000% (27.56″) art toys will be available from Pop Mart Global on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 — likely at the usual drop time of 7 PM PDT. While official international pricing has not been announced, the Chinese retail prices are ¥1299 (~$204) for the 400% and ¥5,999 (~$943) for the 1000%.

Clutter is set to release the Air Dondi – Legacy Gold edition sculpture in celebration of the late NYC graffiti artist Dondi White. This latest edition features a sparkling gold version of the flamboyant sculpture. With a wide stance, spray can held high in one hand, the other back behind his head, Air Dondi is poised to leave his mark on a wall in a pose reminiscent of Michael Jordan dunking a basketball from nearly half court as seen in the iconic Air Jordan logo.

Astro Boy GID Boxer & DJ by ToyQube

As a creative St. Patrick’s Day drop, ToyQube is releasing GID versions of its 6″ Astro Boy Boxer and Astro Boy DJ vinyl art toys. First seen as 3″ minis in the Astro Boy Mini Set, each of the new 6″ GID versions celebrate different aspects of Osamu Tezuka’s iconic character with GID + black designs.

With a bright green glow, these new figures are a fun twist on St. Paddy’s green. While the 6″ Boxer has had three previous releases (Blue/Red, OG and Mono), this is the first 6″ version of the Astro Boy DJ.

The Astro Boy GID Boxer and Astro Boy GID DJ vinyl art toys (6″) will be available on St. Patrick’s Day (3.17) from ToyQube. While pricing has not been announced, the previously released Astro Boy Boxer figures retailed for $65.

J.T Studio continues its fun, innovative 2GO series with a cool collaboration with shark specialists Momoco Studio. The Shark Boy 2Go figures (OG and Black Wild) features a hip, shark skater in the now familiar 8″ scale format. With oversized shark heads, realistic fabric clothes and gear, the articulated Shark Boy figures should prove quite popular with their strong mix of street style and designer toy aesthetics.

As with all of J.T Studio’s releases, Shark Boy 2Go features lots of fun details and touches including the Mackerel companion toys based on Momoco’s popular mini figure. On the gear side the deck features sharp shark graphics and what would normally be a pack is a dry bag, perfect for well…sharks. Continuing the Momoco crossover, the design of the OG edition’s yellow dry bag also features Mackerel-inspired doodle graphics. Finally, as with all 2GO releases, Shark Boy includes satchel style carry bags with a lighthearted toothy shark design for all your toy toting needs.

Shark Boy 2GO is the third release in the 2GO series following two QUICCS collaborations: TEQ63 2GO and Kurosawa 2GO.

The Shark Boy 2GO action figures (8.66″) will be available for preorder on Wednesday (3.16) at 9 PM PDT from both the JT Studio and Momoco Studio online stores with the individual OG available for $170 and the 2-pack including the Black Wild edition for $299. The Black Wild is only available as part of the 2-pack.

Giant Robot is set to release the new Dongo GID sofubi art toy from Yoskay Yamamoto. This third edition of Yamamoto’s moon gentleman is ready for sundown with a bright green glow. With small bowler hat, suit and tie, Dongo is perhaps the best dressed moon ever. The GID edition is the last of the initial set of colorways and follows the previously released OG Blue and the Lavender editions.

NTWRK is set to release its exclusive Always Somewhere Else – Dark Edition vinyl art toy from Mexico City-based Rodrigo Roji x 3DRetro. Part of Roji’s RRAR toy project, this edition features his ‘R’ character—an alter-ego of sorts—in black and gray gear with classic black kicks. As like many of us, R is occupied with his phone, rather than focusing on the here and now. Roji’s debut vinyl art toy is an excellent example of modern urban vinyl with its stylishly laid back vibe and onpoint gear.

Luke Chueh completes his imprisonment-themed series with the new Resign resin art toy dropping at DKE Toys’ DKECON 2022 virtual convention (3.25 – 3.27). The three-figure series casts Chueh’s bear imprisoned in the clear confines of its carded blister. The final stage in the bear’s captive experience, Resign debuts in the classic white colorway and follows Realize and Resist. Based on previous releases, Munky King should follow the debut with an exclusive black edition.

ToyQube has announced its upcoming Astro Boy Boxer GID vinyl art toy. The latest in the brand’s lineup of figures channeling Osamu Tezuka’s signature character, the new GID figure stands 6″ tall and follows three previously released 6″ versions: Red/Blue and the OG & Mono which were released as set. The full Astro Boy Boxer lineage also includes the 3″ mini (part of the five figure set) and the 10″ Dr. Woo crossover.
