During 2011 we released a rewrite of the GoldMine standard as VinylSearcher.com (http://vinylcomments.blogspot.com/2011/03/goldmine-standard.html) believed that most of the industry is ignoring the standard, this has been the case for the start of 2012. Some companies have no moved away from using and are sticking to there down grading standards of Excellent, Good, bad in some ways this makes life a little easier as the vinyl buyer has maybe more detail on what they are purchasing.

As Vinyl Records get older some would argue that maybe its better to use a simplier system that has a traffic light system:

Red : its not a good records

Amber: Average Quality

Green : a Good quality record

The trouble is near mint, mind and excellent dont mean the same thing, and people keep ignoring this. How are shoppers supposed to be able to work out what they want to buy? its not like a car that you can feel, see and touch. In a coventional record shop you dont need any of this hassle as you can grade for yourself. We noticed that Wikipedia doesnt have a entry for GoldMine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramophone_record and this would surly mean that its not industry standard.

Other notible interests in vinyl records is a new product called virginiser http://www.recordrevirginizer.com/, we have tested it at vinylsearcher.com and it works well. The product is like a facepack, in that it creates a layer over the record that needs eight hours to dry, then it peals off, this takes with it all the dirt that was on the record. Its a slow process and the price is high, about 20.00 USD+ per bottle. Is this better than conventional record cleaner, yes it is, is it worth it, well if the record is worth 100+ USD then probably yes.

Ref: http://www.recordrevirginizer.com/pics/105_HFW_Mar11.pdf

After looking at search stats for 2011, top search terms from VinylSearcher.com were:

1. Cheap vinyl records.
2. Calvin harris vinyl records
3. Dj Wallpapers

Strange mix yes, but it echos the market right now, people want cheap records, unfortunately cheap isnt really associated with good quality records. At VinylSearcher we tend to bin rubbish records as the customer experience is never going to be good if they recieve a rubbish record.

Vinyl Piracy is on the rise, you only have to search the web to find people offering to cut vinyl from the dreaded mp3, this means the buyers marketplace for vinyl is becoming difficult and valuing these items in becomming impossible as how do you truely know if its a repress or recut. This area is not regulated so if you are HOOJ Tunes or any other label that has gone bust whos going to inforce and stop people repressing your vinyl. Prices for recuts can be as low as 30USD for a single vinyl and siginifantly less for multi copies.

In the news recent articles like "Vinyl records make the world go around again", show vinyl records are still producing good results and the long dead vinyl cult is apparently still alive, great isnt it.

Populare Genres are mixed and old classic seven inch vinyls are selling very well, its the fact that these items do not lend themselves to mp3, plus believe it or not they are not on mp3, imagine that! with megaupload gone now maybe everyone will stop posting up shady copies of every tune under the sun.
The seizure was made following a raid on a warehouse by Birmingham Trading Standards, as part of a joint operation with the police, Sony and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

The operation took place after Trading Standards received an anonymous tip-off about a company selling supposed ‘rare’ and compilation vinyl. Following the information officers made three undercover purchases of records which subsequently proved to be fake after testing by the BPI.

A bootleg recording is an audio or video recording of a performance which is not officially authorised by the artist or copyright holder. Such recordings can often involve using music samples from well known artists and mixing them with other music, or creating bootleg compilation albums for sale and distribution.

This type of activity including the possession and sale of illicit vinyl is a criminal offence under The Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and prosecution can carry sentences of up to 10 years in prison or an unlimited fine.

Music by artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Kylie and the Arctic Monkeys was among the hoard seized.

Cllr Neil Eustace, Chair of the Public Protection Committee, said: “While some may think the trade in bootleg film or music is a victimless crime, the truth is that such black market activity has a very real impact on the livelihood of not just artists, but also many more local people and their opportunity to earn a living in the legitimate music, record, film and recording industries.”

Figures from the BPI estimate that piracy (not including downloads) costs the legitimate music and film industry £100m a year in the UK alone.

David Wood, Director of Anti-Piracy at the BPI, said: “The UK music industry suffers significant loss from the sale of counterfeit and bootleg recordings. I would like to acknowledge the professionalism and dedication shown by Birmingham City Trading Standards Officers for the diligent way they have investigated this case. They have made a significant seizure of bootleg recordings which were destined to be sold to the public”

In 2011 calvin harris has stormed the scene with his mc like music, breaking boundries playing festivals and clubs a like. Even vinyl record sales of his tracks have gone mental.

Harris played at the 2010 Big Day Out, a music festival which takes place in several major cities in Australia and Auckland, New Zealand. In May 2010, he performed at Evolution Festival, UK in Newcastle upon Tyne, Quayside, and in July he played at Nottingham Splendour and headlined at the Stockton International Riverside Festival in Stockton-on-Tees. In July 2010, Harris released a mix, titled L.E.D. Festival (short for L.E.D. Festival Presents... Calvin Harris). It was available for one month as a free covermount CD in Mixmag.
Harris appeared at the tenth birthday of Our:House in Auckland, New Zealand, in November 2010, alongside Afrojack,[22]
and performed an hour-long DJ set at Australia's Steresonic Festival
alongside Tiesto, Carl Cox, Afrojack and Major Lazer in
November/December 2010, in several major Australian cities including
Sydney and Melbourne. In 2011, he toured with Rihanna in Australia, Poland and the UK as a support act on her Loud Tour;
Rihanna was quoted to say that "Calvin is the perfect fit for the Loud
tour. He is going to bring something unique and fun for the fans."[23] Harris headlined the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2011 party.
During March and April 2011, Harris was scheduled to be an opening act/DJ for Katy Perry on the UK leg of her California Dreams Tour,
but he withdrew from the tour shortly before his first date, citing
production issues and difficulties with Perry's management in his
apology to her fans.[24]
Perry publicly criticised Harris via her Twitter feed, stating that the
tour's other support acts had expressed no problems with their
production arrangements,[25] but Harris later said "it's all fine" between them and that he would still like to work with her in the future.[26]
1. Field of Dreams - Force & Styles [1997]

I believe this classic happy hardcore tune is the finest in the genre. The song has meaningful lyrics (and more than one verse) and is put together well, but what strikes me the most is the incredibly classy mix of keyboards, strings, vocals, and synths. The piano melody is syncopated rhythmically and is unbelievable catchy. That's not to say that I loved everything- I didn't appreciate the overpowering synths in the middle. However, the song starts with a bang and never ever lets you down.

On a separate note, there is video of a performance on Youtube with Jenna and MC Junior from "Hardcore Heaven: The Live Showcase" on 22nd Feb 1997 (from the VHS video of the event). I'm pretty sure she falls down at one point there, but her singing was very good. One of my favorite live EDM performances of all time.

"It's a matter fact and its plain to see
The love that burns inside of me
I'd like to lead you back here by my side
These memories might never last
A broken dream held from the past
And the passion that is lost within my mind"

2. Shooting Star - Bang! [1997]

This was the first real happy hardcore song I ever listened to, save some chipmunk-esque rubbish on youtube. The vocals are kind of strained at times, but it was clearly well constructed. It begins with a chorus and never lets the listener down.

3. Eyeopener - Brisk and Trixxy [1997]

This song is truly special. The vocals hit you almost immediately and are familiar to many people. In fact, the song samples "Open Your Eyes" by Koko, a major hit from, you guessed it, 1997. Koko was a one-hit wonder, but her song evidently wasn't. At first, however, it seems to be cheesy and derivative, but it was perhaps genius of Brisk and Trixxy to sample that Euro hit.

4. Wonderful Days - Charlie Lownoise and Mental Theo [1994]

This might not be the first happy hardcore song, but it's sure a pioneer. In 1994, happy hardcore was a new genre, if it existed. In fact, the main predecessor to happy hardcore, bouncy techno, was still popular. Let's just say the song was precocious. The song is centered around a vocal sample is from the first verse of Tony Ronald's "Help me get some help" (1971).

5. Toytown - Hixxy (and Sharkey) [1995]

The original song was instrumental and produced by Hixxy. However, part of the song's lasting fame comes from its place first on the first CD from Bonkers, where it had both the input of MC Sharkey and vocals.

6. Heart of Gold - Field of Dreams [1996 recorded/release feat. Jenna, 1998 recorded/release feat. Kelly Llorenna]

Heart of Gold has a lot in common with Field of Dreams, especially a similar form and quality lyrics. However, I don't think that detracts from either of them. Heart of Gold, in fact, is the more famous song. In 1998, the record was released, and had some commercial success, peaking at 55 on the UK charts. When re-released by Llorenna in 2002, it peaked at 19.

7. Dancing in the Rain - Euphony [1997]

8. We Come Alive - Ineffect and Gammer feat. Andy L [2006]

9. Elysium - Scott Brown [1998]

Elysium has been remixed so many times, it's hard to keep track. "Elysium" is different than "Elysium Plus," which is different from "Elysium (Scott Brown v. Ultrabeat)," which is different from "Return to Elysium." That's enough to give me a headache. The original is the classic, not the others, if you can differentiate.

10. Power of Love '97 - Q-Tex [1997]

Power of Love was originally released in 1993, but remixed in 1997. Scott Brown was a part of Q-Tex.

11. Funfair (Exclusive Remix) - Force and Styles
12. Your Smile - Charlie Lownoise and Mental Theo [1996]
13. Fly Away - Visa
14. Come Follow Me - DJ Stompy [1997]

Cheesy lyrics are good, but the fake horns section made my day.

15. Hold Me Now - Highlander [1995]

Vocals from Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry."

16. Eurolove - Brisk and Trixxy
17. Can't Stop Raving – Dune
18. Rush Hour - DJ Magical [1996]

Actually, I didn't like this one at first, but it grew on me. Standard rhythm (4/4) and nice vocals.

19. Forever Shining - Mikk [2007]
20. Together Forever - Hixxy and Bananama [1995]
21. Set You Free - N-Trance [1995]
22. Discoland - Tini-tot
23. Children of the Night - Nakatomi [1996]
24. Techno Wonderland - Ravers Choice [1996]
25. Kiss Your Lips - Tokyo Ghetto Pussy
26. Pretty Green Eyes - Force and Styles [1997]

Ultrabeat re-released a classic. I'm not sure it added anything.

27. Sunrise - Trixxy
28. Rainbow to the Stars – Dune
29. Follow Me - Force and Styles
30. Million Miles From Home - Dune
31. Getting High - Brisk and Ham
32. '74 '75 - DJ Fritzy
33. Forever Young - Interactive
34. Steam Train - Dougal and Hopscotch [1995]
35. Love, Life and Happiness - Stealth
36. Stuck In a Moment - Ineffect and Gammer feat. Alice Wade
37. I Wanna Be A Hippy - Technohead
38. Have You Ever Been Mellow - Party Animals
39. Tears Run Cold - Sy & Demo
40. All I Need - Visa

Honorable Mentions:

Sunshine (97 Acid Remix) - Slipmatt and Eruption
Planet Love - Intermission

The rap group will release Most of My Heroes Still Don't Appear On No Stamp and The Evil Empire of Everything in June and September respectively.

Chuck D told US magazine Billboard the records are "two concise statements that are connected in the same breath".

Public Enemy were formed in 1982 and are widely regarded as one of hip-hop's most influential groups.

The band, made up of Chuck D, Flava Flav, Professor Griff and Terminator X, have previously scored top 10 albums in the UK with Fear Of A Black Planet and It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back.

Their best known hits are Don't Believe The Hype, He Got Game and Welcome To The Terrordome - which all reached the top 20 in the UK singles chart.

Public Enemy are known for their controversial and politically-charged lyrics, which often criticise the American media.

Sigma – The Jungle (Breakbeat Kaos)

What an amazing way to start this year’s top 20 dnb singles - the earthshattering, cataclysmic The Jungle. Sigma have had another stellar year, and this is their first appearance on the top 20. The track reminds us of jungle’s enduring popularity, as well as having an eye on the future

2. Foreign Concept - Mob Justice (Critical

A more apt tune for 2011 you could not hope to find. The brooding, marauding bass of Mob Justice typified feelings during the course of the summer, and formed the basis of Foreign Concept’s breakthrough track. Kasra’s Critical label could do no wrong this year, much more from them later.

3. Cyantific – Touch Me (Ram Records)

Pure vibes on this one. Jon Cyantific touches them all once again on this skanking call to arms. He goes in as only he can, with all elements working perfectly. Still sounding as fresh as the moment it came out, the drop into the bass section is just booming. Old skool and new skool at the same time.

4. Crystal Clear and Zen - Heavy VIP (Ganja)

The heaviest of the heavy for Playaz’ finest. All the dancefloor and jump up massives will know this one, and whilst the original is iconic, the VIP actually manages to change things up a little. The signature bass remains, but the background effects make the remix worthwhile.

5. Calibre - Piano Bizness (Critical)

Deep. Smooth. Inspirational. Words can’t quite describe Calibre when he’s at his best. And he’s always at his best. The most prolific man in drum & bass had an amazing 2011, even by his very high standards. This is one of his best of all time.

6. Metrik – Between Worlds EP (Viper)

Between Worlds was perhaps the finest example of space (drum &) bass in 2011. The clarity of production was as evident as on any of Metrik’s previous work, and he took his vision to new heights. All of the tracks on the EP are simply amazing.

7. ShockOne – Crucify Me Pt 1 (Viper)

Epicness from ShockOne featuring Phetsta. Electro-dub-bass at its most punishing, Crucify Me murdered dancefloors all year. Australia’s ShockOne built his name on remixes of Netsky amongst others, but this year has exploded onto the scene in his own right. Watch out for even more in 2012.

8. Benny Page feat Top Cat – Sound Fi Dead (High Culture)

By way of complete contrast, the soundsytem-worrying sounds of Benny Page and dancehall superstar Top Cat. If you want to transport yourself instantly to Carnival or any summer festival, rock your system with this one. Proving there is still a place for the dub plate and the rewind in 2011, this one is pure worries!

9.Sequence One (Critical)

Tracks from Enei & DRS, Ulterior Motive, Phace, Jubei? Yes please. Offering four different takes on crunching, take-no-prisoners drum & bass, this release featured a who’s-who of cutting edge dnb, 2011-style. The strength of Critical’s output has been quality, variety and a nose for what works well in the club.

10. DJ Marky - Yellow Shoes/Mystic Sunset (Innerground)

Two amazing pieces of music from Marky and SPY. The former is a perfect summer tune, with flowing guitar and piano complimenting the precision drums and bass effects, whilst the latter will take you off into another world, one in which music is pure paradise.

11. J Majik & Wickaman – Ritual (Metalheadz)

An absolute stormer from veterans J Majik & Wickaman. The way the sinuous bassline morphs around the breaks and Dee Freer’s emotive vocal is mind-bending, as is the way the track veers from the spine-tingling to the ass-shaking.. Metalheadz had another fantastic year, as they do every year.

12. Hamilton – Brainstorm (Ram Records)

2011 was a break-out year for Hamilton, with quality release after quality release. Brainstorm sees the RAM star at the top of his game, using all of his experience and talent on this rinser. Punishing bass is at the forefront, and raves quaked to its might all year long. With an album planned, watch out for Hamilton next year.

13. Lenzman - Lazers/Broken Dreams (Metalheadz)

Two more from the top of the dome from Lenzman, and yet more from Metalheadz’ amazing catalogue. Lasers is a grinding, close-to-the-ground effort, with more than a nod to the future, whilst Broken Dreams is a classic, with emotion-led sensibilities, and a heart-wrenching vocal sample. The Dutchman has been all over drum & bass this year.

14. The Prototypes - Born To Rise (Shogun Audio)

Another production team who have had a good 2011 is The Prototypes. Their Born To Rise EP saw the Brighton duo reach new heights with their exciting, electro-led drum & bass. The title track wastes no time in getting down to some hectic business, and the whole EP had the dancefloor in mind.

15. Krome & Time – Ganja Man (S.P.Y and Total Science remix)

Such a classic, and a tune I remember fondly from the early part of my love affair with jungle and drum and bass. Freshly licked for 2011 by TS & SPY, the tune is revitalised into a future-looking tearer. 2011 has definitely been a year where jungle has been revisited and refreshed.

KROME & TIME ; GANJAMAN [TOTAL SCIENCE & S.P.Y REMIX] (StreetLife010) by Total Science

16. Sigma – Do You Love (Life Recordings)

More from Sigma, with this track taken from their Night & Day EP Part 2. With the build-and-drop working to perfection, Do You Love is a standout from the EP. Their Life Recordings imprint has been going from strength to strength, and this year’s top 20 even has room for one more Sigma mention.

17. Camo & Krooked - Feel Your Pulse (Viper)

Whilst Vienna’s C&K have found fame on Hospital this year, this stormer actually found a release on Viper at the start of 2011. The unrelenting, unceasing electronica of Feel Your Pulse might divide opinion, we wanted to include it for its pure dancefloor appeal. Well, you try not grooving to it…

18. Serial Killaz – Send Dem (Titan)

A bit of amen business for you to wrap yourselves around. Serial Killaz have made a name for themselves with many top notch remixes, but this original work is also top drawer. The world-ending bass drop’ll make you spit your turkey leftovers all over the table. You have been warned.

19. DJ Nut Nut – Special Dedication (Sigma Remix) (Streetlife)

Continuing with the junglistic flavours, Sigma bring this classic bang up to date. All those that remember the original will be proud of the job that Cameron and Joe have done, and the subtle tweaks and changes that they have made are all to the good.

Top Cat - Special Dedication (Sigma Rmx) by sigmahq

20. Doctor P and Flux Pavilion – Superbad (Circus)

And finally. What collection of the best of 2011 could be complete without this slice of blaxpliotation-on-record. Who hasn’t done the clownstep to this at a club this year? Doctor P and Flux Pavilion team up for fun and games as they race around the streets in their pimped-out cop car hunting for the best nightlife has to offer.

How to buy, value and sell vinyl records

In this section we aim to give some guidance on various areas of vinyl
records, we get many emails asking how do value or buy records, this
should help.

vinyl records for sale

Vinyl records can be bought from many places now, some better than
others. In the UK your local hmv will still stock some vinyl records,
probably only commercial releases
but all the same they are still there. Online seems to be the way but
obviously you cannot handle the record. In the uk london Soho would be one of the better places to go with many records shops
including Black Market Records are within a square mile.

collectible vinyl records

Collecting the records isnt normally a issue, but if you want to bulk
out your collection look for deals on packs of tunes for twenty pounds.
Most big suppliers will do this to shift slow selling stock.

caring vinyl records

Caring for your records, well paper inlays, plastic outer packaging will
keep them pretty clean. A good sturdy record box that will last a few
years is a must. Somewhere clean and dry.

sell vinyl records

When it comes to selling records pick your time well, record value
fluctuate depending on how many are out in the market at that time, so
check ebay, musicstack, gemm and so on, this will also give you a idea
pf price.

most valuable vinyl records

The most valuable records
wont change much year on year except for artists dying and sending the
prices higher for a while. Take micheal jackson, the tunes went crazy
but them calmed down to a normal level once people released that
you can get a copy of Bad from your local charity shop for 90p. Beatles,
Elvis and Rolling Stones still sell for high prices, with John Lennons
one off white sleeved being the most valuable at the time of writing.
Ebay will always tell you some crazy prices for records, remember people
can list them for whatever they like!

how to clean vinyl records

Keeping items nice and clean always helps, record cleaner is cheap and
works very well, this is cheap and effective. Then you have vinyl
virginizer which creates a facemask like film over the top, once peeled
off the vinyl is near perfect.
issue is it takes eight hours to set and you only get about 5
applications per bottle.

value of vinyl records and price guides

There are many sites that will help with valuations, like PopSpike, discgs, gemm and netsounds. Usually its just based on previous selling price.
Also the record collectors guild may help.

"So it’s about time for the big one, the question that will divide the dance music family right down the middle… What really is the greatest dance record of all time?

How do we even go about starting to work this one out, I mean the key factors for one person could be the complete opposite for another.

Do we judge it on commercial success? If we did all the purists would be up in arms saying that dance music isn’t supposed to commercial, it belongs in the underground… ZZZZZZZ not that old story again!!!! Or maybe do we judge it on genre bending playability, a song that was played by all the big hitters across many musical styles and was a hit in every club around the world. Or maybe we could pick a song that started a movement, a tune that kicked off a new generation and breathed life into a flagging scene back in the day and opened up doors for new clubs and DJ’s alike."

Well arent they a little bias ? the people should decide this, issue is everyone will have a different oppinion. so its interesting to see who things Stardust is the best...
