Netgear WG111v3 WiFi drivers for Windows 8 and Windows 10 (Updated)

We recently updated our computers to Windows 8. We had an issue with WAMP on development server on Windows 8. Another issue we had when we updated our computers to Windows 8 was that the drivers for Netgear WG111v3 WiFi USB adapter didn’t work. We couldn’t find them anywhere on Netgear’s website. That meant our computers were without internet! Of course we cannot work without internet so that meant we either find the drivers or revert to Windows 7.

We extracted drivers from the Netgear Windows 7 drivers setup utility and tried installing them manually through device manager. The result? They worked absolutely fine! You can download these drivers by clicking on the following links:

How to run WAMP in Windows 8

We recently updated our development server to Windows 8. We wanted to try out how our things and the applications we need work on Windows 8. The upgrade report didn’t report any issues with the applications we need so we proceeded to a clean installation. The Windows 8 installation was quite fast and smooth. After installing the required drivers we proceeded to install the most important thing we needed: WAMP server. We used the latest version in Windows 7 so proceeded to install the latest version (2.2e) on our machine. The installation started up fine but when the setup was about to finish we got an msvcr100.dll error. We proceeded to finish the setup anyway and launched WAMP. However the WAMP icon remained orange while it should have been green. We opened up localhost but it didn’t work. So the search for the solution started and we really hoped we find a solution.

The Googling started and the first thing we googled was the file name msvcr100.dll. Apparently Windows 8 doesn’t come with Visual C++ Redistributables installed. So we installed the following packages. All of the links are for x86/32 bit versions of Windows :

After installing these packages we re-installed WAMP with our fingers crossed. The result? WAMP icon turned green. So we all thought we’ve won the battle and fired up the browser and entered localhost. Boo! We got a Forbidden error now. Mission WAMP started again and with a little bit of googling we found a very simple solution. It turns out that Windows is using the IPv6 address ::1 instead of 127.0.0.1:

Open up the phpmyadmin.conf file in notepad. You can find the file at:

C:\wamp\alias\phpmyadmin.conf (Assuming you’ve installed WAMP on C drive)

Now find the following line in tag find (without quotes):

“Allow from 127.0.0.1”

Change it to:

“Allow from 127.0.0.1 ::1”

Voila! WAMP now runs absolutely fine on Windows 8. The icon is green, localhost opens up fine, phpmyadmin opens up fine and all of our developed sites open up fine. The Windows 8 machine boots up very fast and overall it seems faster to us which is a good thing.

Font size fix for Windows Phone

While testing the Violet Pear website, we came across a font issue on Windows Phone 7 devices. Internet Explorer on Windows Phone 7 doesn’t support @font-face CSS property. The Windows Phone 7 devices support and use only the built-in fonts in the OS. As a result the website isn’t displayed in the font we’ve used in the CSS on the Windows Phone OS. This shortcoming of the Windows Phone OS caused the headlines on our pages to appear way too big on the devices which are powered by it and that broke the formatting and layout of our website.

So we headed over to Google and searched for IE fixes for Windows Phone 7. We got to know from MSDN that there is a fix for that. It’s a very simple fix. All you have to do is add the property “-ms-text-size-adjust” to the tag you want to fix. Here’s an example on how to use the tag:

-ms-text-size-adjust: 80%;

Here 80% declares the size of the font i.e. 80% of the original font size for the tag. Do keep in mind that using this fix will make your CSS invalid at W3C CSS validator.

After the hard work of couple of months, we present to you the Violet Pear website. Some of you might know that Violet Pear used to be a blog for designers and developers. We’ve now started offering design and development services for the web and mobile apps.

After the brainstorming and planning sessions, various ideas were first sketched and then brought to life with the help of Illustrator and Photoshop . We took a lot of time and effort to launch the full fledged Violet Pear website. Now that the result of our efforts was in front of all, we waited for a few days to get the feedback and then write this post. We feel very proud to say that we have got some great feedback from people all over the world. Just like us they too loved the website.

I hope you too liked it and are proud of our efforts. As always, your honest feedback is welcome.
