Heading overseas to get into the Christmas Spirit at a Christmas Market? Here is a list of my top 10 free Apps that are great for traveling and exploring.

These are recommend from beginners to the seasoned traveler. I use an IPhone 4 and have had no difficulty using the below applications. I’m about to head back overseas to host my two Christmas market tours and look forward to using these in some new cities I will be visiting, such Plauen.

If you have a phone that has ‘Apps’ or Applications all ten below are free of charge but be leery of international data roaming charges (more on that after my top 10).

1. XE Currency - you can quickly put in an amount in Euros and it will instantly give you the most accurate rate in US dollars or your currency.

2. Converter Plus - a unit converter with very extensive list of units in hundreds of categories. The list includes area, weight, energy, force, length, mass, power, pressure, speed, temperature, volume, bits and bytes and many more. Great for your metric conversions.

3. Free Wi-Fi Finder - just what it states- Instantly find FREE Wi-Fi Internet hotspots wherever you are in the world! This free Wi-Fi app uses your iPhone’s GPS and networking capabilities to locate free Wi-Fi Internet access

4. Alarm Clock Free - great looking alarm clock free – don’t oversleep due to jet lag! What I like is it displays local weather conditions before you even crawl out of bed to see if snow is falling.

5. Qype Radar is an all-inclusive travel guide for most Countries in the European Union, including categories for bars, shops, hotels, and restaurants. Featuring multi-language settings, in-depth and personal reviews of anything looked up, and sync support with Google Maps, and your Qype account, Qype Radar is recommended for those looking for a place to eat in Europe

6. Weather Channel - great for using overseas as well! Easy to navigate and I recommend to save the cities you are visiting to in advance.

7. Foursquare I’m addicted to Foursquare. Use your mobile phone to ‘check in’ to venues and look for specials. You can read other peoples reviews on places and its fun to explore around you. I have found numerous specials only valid on Foursquare such as a free appetizer or gift or discount. I enjoy reading posts when I’m checking into a location.

8. Google Translate - Don’t waste your time trying to figure out what Feuerzangenbowle is at a busy Christmas market stand – this great App will assist you with translating the German language. So what is Feuerzangenbowle? A very cool drink involving hot mulled wine, high percentage alcohol rum and open flames. (I actually just knew that one). Another great language translator is Free Translator by codesign.

9. Frommers Travel Tools- This app has it all – with applications on tipping, packing lists, convert rates and measurements, basics on how to get by and try not to look like a typical tourist. I find it handy for even the seasoned traveler!

10. World Customs and Cultures - great for the local cultures with basic tips as simple as Germans like their personal space and a few taboos to follow. This is great if you are crossing the border into Poland and need to feel a bit more comfortable. Very basic tips but has fun advice for almost every country in the World!

An honorable mention goes to iLlumination US – Universal Flashlight by Erik Storli. I’ve tried numerous lights for the iPhone and have found this one to be nice and bright for a free App. It takes a second to load but is very bright for dark areas and rooms – great for peeking under the bed for that lost sock. It even has a strobe light that lights up the screen in the color of your choosing.

So what about a new app just for Christmas Markets? Weihnachtsmarkt by Das Ortliche Service will be one I cannot wait to try. It’s in German but boasts over 1500 Christmas Markets as well as opening hours, Glühwein stands as well as nearby parking. I’ll let you know how well it works in just a few short weeks!

With smart phones, it’s important to watch data-roaming charges. A three-minute video watched from a restaurant in Regensburg on YouTube can cost about $45. While doing some casual browsing and emailing costs way less (figure around 20 cents to send or receive a basic message), these charges can pile up quickly.

To avoid these costs, it’s easiest to cut off this feature entirely by calling your carrier to disable it and/or always turning your data roaming off in your phone’s settings. I recommend to do this BEFORE you get on your transatlantic flight to Germany. You can still use the Internet, but you’ll have to wait until you reach a Wi-Fi hotspot using the app mentioned above or find free ones in the city or your hotel. Otherwise, for the best rates, talk to your carrier about international data-roaming plans.

There are numerous travel-oriented applications available out there even if you don’t use your phone’s apps or call features. I actually still prefer glancing through a guidebook or holding a real paper map to have while I’m strolling or driving through places but there are still numerous free map options online as well as numerous travel guides in ebook format. Don’t forget well known apps such as TripAdvisor and Yelp which give you instant access to lots of user reviews of hotels, attractions and restaurants.

So find me at a market on Foursquare between November 26 and December 7, 2011 and let’s have a Glühwein together!

Christina Ernst has visited over 500 European Christmas and Christkindl Markets. She specializes in small group tours and traveling in Western Europe.

Up
on the cliff a man stood guard with a rifle. I glanced nervously
around, blinking away the snow that had landed on my eyelashes.
People were staring eagerly with cameras poised. I took a deep
breath, pulled off my fleece sweater and trekking pants and rushed
into the icy water. The water was a shock, but I smiled and even
laughed as I sank into the Arctic sea. The water was only 34 degrees,
and the outside air around 36 degrees. Here, in Magdalenefjorden Bay,
we were a few hundred miles from the North Pole. I came out of the
ice water quicker than an Olympic sprinter, fumbled quickly into my
outerwear, jumped into a zodiac raft, and in less than ten minutes I
was relaxing in a sauna wondering if I had crossed the border from
partially civilized to simply crazy. I still found it hard to
believe that I was on my dream trip – a seven day Arctic cruise
around Svalbard, Norway.

Svalbard
is located in the Arctic ocean 370 miles north of the Norwegian
mainland. Only a few cruise lines operate in this remote location due
to the short summer season that boasts twenty-four hours of sunlight
from June through August. I traveled on the M/S Expedition, a
converted car ferry turned cruise ship operated by G Adventures formally known as GAP Adventures. I
was extremely pleased with the layout of the cruise ship, which holds
130 people comfortably and was currently carrying 78. Because of our
smaller group on this trip, I was able to meet so many wonderful and
interesting people from all over the world – this was of the most
diverse international group I have ever traveled with, but we all
agreed on one thing, and that was that were were in for the adventure
of a lifetime.

Our
sailing headed south along the rugged Svalbard coastline, and within
15 hours, we were called to the bow to witness our first polar bear
sighting. It was truly awe-inspiring as we gazed through our
binoculars at this arctic giant meandering down a steep cliff in the
distance. This bear, not caring one way or the other about its new
audience, continued its normal routine. We, too, had to acclimate to
a new routine if we wanted to witness more polar bear sightings. We
then headed down to the elaborate mud room to get ready for our
zodiac boat expeditions. These Zodiac boats are perfect for
navigating the sea ice and getting up close and personal with the sea
and wildlife. I became lost in the moment as we zipped around
Hornshund bay and saw all types of birds around us. We saw including
hundreds of kittiwakes which look similar to seagulls flying
around us as well as thick-billed black Murr
father and son pairs swimming in the sea next to us. The Murres are
very similar to Penguins but are able to swim.

The
next morning, while in my cabin, John, one of the lead expedition
guides, came over the loudspeaker and said in the most deep,
animated voice, “You
are about to see the mother-load of polar bear sightings – at least
seven polar bears feeding on a whale carcass”. We quickly jumped
into the awaiting zodiacs and navigated over and around the sea ice
and five-foot swells. As we approached the shoreline, we watched in
amazement, as the polar bears reluctantly shared a forty-foot whale
carcass. A few people got sick and were picked up from the rafts and
taken back to the ship. J.P., a doctor from Seoul, looked at me from
behind his camera lens with the biggest grin as he compared our
first-day polar bear sighting with this one. He explained “A
polar bear this size,” as he squeezed his forefinger and thumb
together, “is not a polar bear, but THIS
is a polar bear!” and returned quickly to capture more
once-in-a-lifetime memories.

In
the days ahead, we hiked on tundras, spotted more wildlife and
learned about the many varieties of flora, which have only a few
months to survive in this rugged wilderness. This seemingly
barren and inhospitable region was teeming with life. I enjoyed
viewing the Arctic Birch trees but you’d have to look on the ground
since they do not grow larger than two centimeters. The mountains
ranged from soft limestone plateaus to jagged mountain peaks climbing
majestically into the Arctic sky. We stumbled upon large amounts of
bones and antlers while trekking through the frozen tundra that
seemed incredibly well preserved. We once sat upon dampened ground
and observed reindeer fattening themselves on the lichen and grass
only feet from us. Although much of the ground is still frozen, there
are areas that thaw and allow the wildlife to feed on the short-lived
flora. As we hiked back to the ship, I couldn’t help but think to
myself, “This truly is the last great wilderness.”

A
few days into our expedition we stood on the ship’s deck we
witnessed miles of glaciers and fjords where 100- million year-old
rocks are covered with birds and ice. Another day, on Marienbreen, we
gazed in astonishment as our guide Frank called out to his walrus
friends, “Woofie! Woofie!” In return to this call, these
gentle giants actually came up within feet of our ship and us. I
paused, “Were we at Sea World?” No, the icy Arctic air and the
harsh, yet inviting, environment reminded us that we were
experiencing raw nature. We gathered on the ship’s bow along
Wahlenberg Fjorden and watched thousands of sea birds fly over us,
while keeping our fingers crossed that our clothes and gear would not
get splattered by bird droppings. There was a never ending cornucopia
of wildlife, such as the Arctic Fox, Beluga whales, Atlantic Puffins,
kittiwakes, geese, reindeer and more. At the base of of of the
numerous glaciers we floated at the base of a cliff of puffins, and
watched these looking birds flutter back and forth over our heads.

Four
days into our seven day adventure the cruise took us to the furthest
point north at latitude
80º 30’ N, which
was very close to the North Pole. During breakfast our cruise
director, Julio Preller, excitedly pointed out in his charming broken
English that the world’s largest
two mammals –the Blue and Fin whales were swimming alongside the
ship. So travel blogger “Wildjunket”
Nellie
Huang, myself and others quickly prepared for the snow and ice and
below freezing temperatures to stand out on the bow to watch these
magnificent mammals feed in the frigid Arctic waters.

My
favorite moments happened were sailing off Nordaustlandet ice fields
on the third day. We all were captivated by a polar bear stretching
on a sheet of ice that seemed carved out just for her just yards off
the bow of our ship. She captured our hearts with her bear antics and
not long afterward we came upon a mother Walrus and cub on an ice
floe. The midnight sun was dancing along the edge of the ice field
and the entire scene was bouncing in hues of lavender, yellow and
blues and it was at this moment time stood still for me as I became
one with this environment, not even the icy cold air could bring me
out of my breathtaking ly beautiful spiritual moments.

Crew members and expedition leaders were
always armed with rifles and on the lookout for polar bears while we
hiked on land. The safety protocol and teamwork of this crew was top
notch<!-- Add an appositive here, like “I traveled on the M/S Expedition, a converted car ferry turned cruise ship, operated by GAP Adventures who helped to host this expedition. Then you could omit the highlighted sentence below. Because this is supposed to be about the trip, you want to sneak in details about the ship and GAP adventures without spending too much time explaining the ship or the touring company.
Added. Feel free to fix, but a transition is needed to get the reader from your polar bear sighting to the necessity of traveling by zodiac to get even closer to Svalbard’s wildlife.
Instead of giving a vague adjective, give a glimpse of detail. Again, the use of appositive could be helpful.
Appositive—“…kittywake, a native bird know for its…, and a thick-billed black murr father and son pair swimming in the sea next to us.”
Even though I was lost in the moment—as I gazed at kittywakes, thick-billed black murrs, and ice…, I had to remember that I was not accustomed to being a part of such sights. Had I wanted, I could have touched the ice slabs that competed for space in the bay. The repercussions of doing something like this would mean. We all had to remember how to react if…. And we did get the chance to show how well or not-so-well we could react if something were to happen. As our group was finding its way to the next polar bear, a ten-foot thick ice ___ broke off and fell in front of our zodiac, grazing and cutting a front seated passenger, Bing, a Chinese independent researcher on climate change, and causing him to lose his iPad to the bay’s freezing water.

I am really wordy, so feel free to cut this down, but it does seem to need more explanation in terms of the dangerous reality one can face on this trip.
You need a transition after this. It’s out of place/obvious.
Provide details about the sight and the whales. This leaves the reader hanging.
Is this part of the “whale” moment or another moment? Specify. Also, you seem, in the next statement, to be wrapping up the trip, but it’s a really abrupt and unexpected shift. Let the reader know that you’re coming to the end or clarify that this next polar bear mind’s-eye-shot is the one you favor most albeit all visions on this trip were spectacular.
Don’t forget to mention where you are on this trip—day seven? Day six?
Explain what you mean by “top notch” in an appositive.
Unless you want to go back into certain areas and provide a brief explanation of why ice is breaking off, this seems a little unexpected in conjunction with the rest of the essay. I also changed the location of where this statement was originally because it seemed even more out of place.
Specific detail. What’s comfortable to one may differ to another.
Safety is a necessary entity on this trip, as polar bears are
steadily losing the natural resources (food and sea ice) that are
essential to their survival. Consequently, the bears are forced to
seek any other means of food. This has resulted in many new and
unexpected encounters with people. Two days before my cruise
embarked, a young British boy lost his life to one. Polar bears are
considered sea mammals because they spend most of their lives spent
on or in the ocean. The sea ice is melting rapidly and in 2007 the
amount that melted was the size of Texas and California combined.
This was a main reason why I needed to witness these great beasts
before they are gone, as well as the rest of the Svalbard
archipelago. As I this trip came to a close, I realized that we
cannot change global warming’s course, but we can lower its impact
by educating us on the changes we can make individually and as a
society as a whole. I plan to return one day to this disappearing
wilderness.
<!-- Add an appositive here, like “I traveled on the M/S Expedition, a converted car ferry turned cruise ship, operated by GAP Adventures who helped to host this expedition.

After booking my ticket to Longyearbyen, Norway I sat back and realized I would have 6 hours in JFK Airport. That spells NOT fun. Not enought time to go into New York City (who wants that hassle?) but too much time to stroll up and down Terminal 4.

I’m a medallion member with Delta, and very loyal to their skymiles program and do frequent their lounges. I also am very fond of the Delta Vacations product through MLT Vacations. Our agency books quite a bit with them, and they have a superb customer care team that still treats travel agents like royalty – plus not to mention the value in their vacation packages.

I did some research. Go to the Crown room with Delta or visit the Oasis, a business class lounge open to numerous travelers from various airlines.

I decided to give Oasis a try. it was at the other end of the terminal but well worth the short stroll. I entered in early, and it was still quite. The lounge faced the runway, and on a pretty sunny day like today it was nice to see to watch the flights head in and out. Internet Access is complimentary, and the bonus was the hot food, Hors d’oeuvres fresh fruit and salad. Oasis also had complimentary beer, wine and spirits and also a nice selection of hot teas and Starbucks coffee. I sat down at a complimentary computer and started working. Complimentary internet access? Yes! TVs and newspapers in numerous languages? Yes!

So what price did I pay for all this luxury to not sit and stare at travelers weary and bleary eyed waiting to catch their next flight? $45. It was well worth it. Delta charges $50 unless you pay $39 at the kiosk. But I liked the comfort and selection. If you have more than 3.5 hours in this busy airport then step over to the Oasis, you will be glad you did!
