Oxford ’12 Bayo celebrated Oxford’s victory over Cambridge in the contest for the year’s athletic bragging rights and thanked all that voted in the Clear Admit 2012 Best of Blogging Competition.  Johnson ’13 Ellipser did not do enough bowling in his first year at business school.

Annaly (NLY) is the largest publicly-traded mortgage REIT in the United States, and one of my all-time favorites. This is not without good reason, especially now that it has announced the public offering of its Convertible Senior Notes and Series C Cumulative Redeemable preferred stock. This is against the backdrop of a recovering economy (I am not reading too much into recent downward housing starts release, as I believe the downfall is going to be short-lived).

Annaly is one of my favorite REITs for two big reasons. One, Annaly trades in government-sponsored real estate mortgages that are not just low risk, but also guaranteed. We’re talking about the likes of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac here, unlike some dubious hedge fund or investment company. These are bought from the three government agencies that securitize groups of mortgages: Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA), Federal National Mortgage Association (FNM), and Federal Home

First let me state emphatically that I have tremendous respect for my fellow authors here on Seeking Alpha. They are among the finest research writers that I have ever read, and I have learned an amazing amount from so many of them. That being said, there are way too many articles written about Annaly (NLY) and their impending failure.

One article on SA points to Mike Farrell’s health issue, and as a cancer survivor myself, I was appalled at that statement within an article. Should everyone just stop reading my articles here because I had cancer? Really remarkable and sad.

The article states:

Annaly’s competitors have outperformed the mREIT. The reason is due to the Annaly size, Annaly’s decision to keep leverage low, and Mr. Ferrill’s cancer situation..

Introducing a positively bizarre series of portraits by photographer Tadao Cern entitled “Blow Job”. I think a better title might have been, “20 reasons why not to stick your head out the window at 200MPH”.

Now I can only assume these people were relatively decent looking when they entered the wind tunnel, or the photographer just failed to catch their “good side”. It doesn’t look comfortable, and I’m quite amazed at how much skin people seem to have on their face. But one thing I am thankful for is that they all brush their teeth. Congrats.

Either way, if you can look at the entire series without laughing at a single one, you may be Keanu Reeves… And no, her name is not Gale.

The Head of Cambridge MBA Admissions and Marketing, Conrad Chua, announced the MBA application deadlines for the 2012-2013 admissions season.  Rich Lyons, the Dean of the Haas School of Business, welcomed the ’07 alumni to campus for a reunion.  UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Dean, Jim Dean, posted a few photos from commencement last weekend.  In addition to meeting alumni in Shanghai and London, the Dean of the Darden School of Business, Bob Bruner, also stopped by Oxford Saïd during his travels.

NYU / Stern held their commencement ceremonies at Yankee Stadium this week.  For those curious about life at Chicago Booth, check out their latest “Day in the Life” series of a student. To more easily connect with Duke / Fuqua, the school created a new social media website. plugged some professors’ research on topics including improvisational leadership and the benefits of biking.  Professors at The Wharton School chimed in on a number of topics, from selecting baby names to the state of the U.S. housing market.

According to Saloner, who took over as Stanford GSB dean in 2009, innovation requires people to be “change agents” who use a mix of leadership, analytical and management skills – all of which he believes can be taught.

“We think we’re providing students with the ability to tackle the big problems,” he told the WSJ. As the WSJ article points out, many prospective students are clamoring to take part in the revamped curriculum focused on teaching innovation. Last year, 6,618 applicants applied for a class that wound up including just 397 students.

In the WSJ interview published this week, South Africa native Saloner answered questions ranging from whether things like innovation and creativity can really be taught to how Stanford GSB in particular sets out to teach personal leadership skills.

Some key excerpts:

Saloner on how to teach creativity: “Here we draw heavily from design elements from our design school,” he told the WSJ. “[Being creative] starts with customer empathy and talking to them and understanding their perspective. Get out of the analytical armchair and go and talk to the person whose situation you’re trying to address.”

Saloner on proof that teaching innovation is working: “One example is the story of Embrace. It was a multidisciplinary team [of students] from the business school, medical school and engineering school. They went to a rural village in Nepal and found out that 20 million low-birth-weight babies are born a year [world-wide] and that four million die a year and that’s essentially because they don’t have baby incubators. That’s a real problem. So you come back here and ask what do we do about it?

Long story short: They invented a baby sleeping bag that in the back has this material [that can be warmed up]. Parents can throw it into boiling water and bring it up to a desired temperature and slip it back into the bag and it is a fully functional baby warmer. And they’ve gone out as a company.”
