Welcome back to Fridays From the Frontline, where we at Clear Admit publish some choice stories floating around the business school blogosphere. Decisions, reflections and plans are all being made this week as bloggers take the next steps towards their summers.

The Senator is committing to Tuck and wearing something green forever; he’s also outed his true identity. Though blubbering on the phone, The Applicationist was ultimately accepted to Chicago Booth and now faces a huge decision. MRI posted her reflections on the GMAT as well as some resources for soon-to-be test-takers. Sanket has celebrated the kickoff of the application season and begun dusting off his résumé. Meanwhile, Cheetarah explored the age-old business school question of rank versus money and landed on an individual’s preferences as the deciding factor.

This week, two more Fridays from the Frontline bloggers reviewed the free Clear Admit School Snapshots. MBA Dilemma reviewed Clear Admit’s School Snapshot for INSEAD and said the “no-nonsense” guide would have saved hours during school screening. Tepper ’13 Julianne also found that the Tepper School Snapshot is a great timesaver for applicants and puts the most relevant information in one place.

Oxford ’12 Bayo celebrated Oxford’s victory over Cambridge in the contest for the year’s athletic bragging rights and thanked all that voted in the Clear Admit 2012 Best of Blogging Competition. Johnson ’13 Ellipser did not do enough bowling in his first year at business school.

This is against the backdrop of a recovering economy (I am not reading too much into recent downward housing starts release, as I believe the downfall is going to be short-lived).

Annaly is one of my favorite REITs for two big reasons. One, Annaly trades in government-sponsored real estate mortgages that are not just low risk, but also guaranteed. We’re talking about the likes of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac here, unlike some dubious hedge fund or investment company. These are bought from the three government agencies that securitize groups of mortgages: Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA), Federal National Mortgage Association (FNM), and Federal Home

First let me state emphatically that I have tremendous respect for my fellow authors here on Seeking Alpha. They are among the finest research writers that I have ever read, and I have learned an amazing amount from so many of them. That being said, there are way too many articles written about Annaly (NLY) and their impending failure.

One article on SA points to Mike Farrell’s health issue, and as a cancer survivor myself, I was appalled at that statement within an article. Should everyone just stop reading my articles here because I had cancer? Really remarkable and sad.

The article states:

Annaly’s competitors have outperformed the mREIT. The reason is due to the Annaly size, Annaly’s decision to keep leverage low, and Mr. Ferrill’s cancer situation..

Not only would I say that this a completely incorrect statement, just for the fact that size does not mean failure, nor

100 oil leases might produce 1 profitable discovery.

What sense would it make for profit-maximizing oil companies like Exxon Mobil to pay the federal government millions of dollars every year for offshore and onshore oil leases on federal land, and then leave those thousands or millions of acres idle? Especially today when oil prices are close to all-time historical inflation-adjusted highs? If you said “No sense at all,” you can go the head of the class, as Professor Walter E. Williams would say. And yet that is exactly what Team Obama is saying:

WASHINGTON – “The White House pushed back against the oil and gas industry’s claims that the Obama administration is blocking domestic energy development, releasing a new analysis showing that 46 million acres of federal lands and waters leased for drilling are sitting idle.

“We continue to make millions of acres … available for safe and responsible domestic energy production on public lands and in federal waters,” said Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in a statement. “We also want companies to develop the tens of millions of acres they’ve already leased but have left sitting idle.”

According to the Department of Interior report, oil and gas companies are actively drilling or have launched development on less than a third of the 36 million acres they have leased offshore, and on just over half of their onshore leases. That includes leases where the companies have not yet filed exploration and development plans with the federal government, and ones where companies have received drilling permits but haven’t launched the work. According to the report, the government has issued about 7,000 permits for exploration not yet under way on federal and Indian lands.”

Here’s how API President and CEO Jack Gerard responded this week:

“If you look at their [the Administration's] characterization of idle leases, normally they include in that leases where we’re trying to get permits, we’re trying to get permission to develop this land. For example, there was a permit approved just last week in Utah, which Secretary Salazar took great credit for. We’ve been waiting for four and a half years for that approval. In the administration’s previous analysis they would have concluded that was an idle lease, while we’re waiting for Uncle Sam to give us permission to produce these resources, to identify resources on public lands. … The industry last year alone invested $200 billion in the United States, so we’re hardly sitting on anything.”

As Mark Green explains on the Energy Tomorrow blog:

“It’s important to remember that a lease isn’t a guarantee that an area will contain any oil or natural gas. Most of them don’t have enough oil or gas in quantities sufficient to produce or in formations that are accessible. The graphic above that puts the search for resources in context [MP: An oil company might pay for 100 leases, but that typically only leads to one actual profitable discovery].

The administration has defined as “idle” leases that aren’t idle at all. They might not be producing for a number of reasons: because of ongoing seismic work, because government permits haven’t been issued, because the rigs and supporting resources are being put in place so drilling can begin – or because drilling is occurring. It’s just misleading to say a company is sitting on a lease when it is waiting for a government-issued permit to start drilling.”

Introducing a positively bizarre series of portraits by photographer Tadao Cern entitled “Blow Job”. I think a better title might have been, “20 reasons why not to stick your head out the window at 200MPH”.

Now I can only assume these people were relatively decent looking when they entered the wind tunnel, or the photographer just failed to catch their “good side”. It doesn’t look comfortable, and I’m quite amazed at how much skin people seem to have on their face. But one thing I am thankful for is that they all brush their teeth. Congrats.

Either way, if you can look at the entire series without laughing at a single one, you may be Keanu Reeves… And no, her name is not Gale.

Seven billion population?! But what if you were the last person on earth?

Now that the human race has passed the 7 billion mark, being one in a million isn’t really that impressive. Numerically speaking there will be some seven thousand other homo sapiens who are in the same million. This is not the point I want to make though, I was not concerned about the demise of prestige in the statement of ‘being one in a million’, but more excited about the prospect of being one in seven billion and then, better still, the thought of being one in, well, one.

So rather than concern myself with what might be considered a happy medium in terms of fellow humans with which to share the globe, I went to the extreme. How to cope with being the only human on the planet, would it be better than sharing it with 6,999,999,999 others? What if I were the last person on earth? Just me and the world exactly as it is of this moment minus everyone else.

Firstly I’d play golf, lots of golf. On courses, that usually I would not have been able to play on because they are too expensive. And I’d do this for as long as a lack of green keepers would allow (No green keepers no greens). No green fees, no dress codes (maybe nude golf would be on the cards), no slow play, no feeling slightly embarrassed by my astronomical scores. Awesome! Now, with that done and the handicap reduced, maybe I should be a bit more practical.

Next I was going to say learn to ride a horse and hunt, very practical. Vital as infrastructures collapse and food reserves go vrot. However this is not necessary. I’m the only person on earth and currently there is enough food and fuel to last at least a day or two for seven billion. I was never going to eat all the tinned food on the planet. I wouldn’t have to take chances hunting dangerous animals either. I mean, how dangerous can a sheep or a cow be? I figure even if I live until 2050, I am not going to drain even one petrol station or the store of tinned goods in a single supermarket. So instead I figured I’d learn to surf.

Surfing isn’t just cool; it’s also a great way to stay fit and healthy and requires no other individuals to keep the area of play in a useable condition. Wet suits, boards, fins and sunscreen sufficient to bath in with money nobody needed. Cool by the pool or the sea or river or ……. And in all honesty, that’d be about it.

I’d probably befriend a dog of the shaggy and friendly variety with which I’d hold one sided conversations. I doubt I’d stay in one place either; obviously traveling throughout Africa would be fairly straight forward and even getting to mainland Europe. In fact I could drive through the Chunnel, which would be a blast. Maybe head to Southern Italy and settle by the coast.

And I’ll call my dog Boogle. Just because I can!

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) Dean Garth Saloner explains how he thinks innovation is a skill that can be taught. His thinking is informed by several years he took off from teaching at Stanford to serve as an advisor to Silicon Valley startups. It’s a belief he feels fervently enough to have overhauled the school’s curriculum to include more teaching of innovation in core classes.

According to Saloner, who took over as Stanford GSB dean in 2009, innovation requires people to be “change agents” who use a mix of leadership, analytical and management skills – all of which he believes can be taught.

“We think we’re providing students with the ability to tackle the big problems,” he told the WSJ. As the WSJ article points out, many prospective students are clamoring to take part in the revamped curriculum focused on teaching innovation. Last year, 6,618 applicants applied for a class that wound up including just 397 students.

In the WSJ interview published this week, South Africa native Saloner answered questions ranging from whether things like innovation and creativity can really be taught to how Stanford GSB in particular sets out to teach personal leadership skills.

Some key excerpts:

Saloner on how to teach creativity: “Here we draw heavily from design elements from our design school,” he told the WSJ. “[Being creative] starts with customer empathy and talking to them and understanding their perspective. Get out of the analytical armchair and go and talk to the person whose situation you’re trying to address.”

Saloner on proof that teaching innovation is working: “One example is the story of Embrace. It was a multidisciplinary team [of students] from the business school, medical school and engineering school. They went to a rural village in Nepal and found out that 20 million low-birth-weight babies are born a year [world-wide] and that four million die a year and that’s essentially because they don’t have baby incubators. That’s a real problem. So you come back here and ask what do we do about it?

Long story short: They invented a baby sleeping bag that in the back has this material [that can be warmed up]. Parents can throw it into boiling water and bring it up to a desired temperature and slip it back into the bag and it is a fully functional baby warmer. And they’ve gone out as a company.”
