				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Virginia Baptists Committed, a diverse group of clergy and laity devoted to preserving, protecting, and promoting the witness of mainstream Baptists in Virginia, is pleased to endorse candidates for the four annually elected offices of the BGAV for the November 2018 annual meeting.</p>
<p>After several years of not endorsing or recommending candidates for the BGAV, VBC has decided to resume the practice following encouragement from clergy and lay people from across the state.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft wp-image-964 size-thumbnail" src="https://virginiabaptistscommitted.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/RichardMartin-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" srcset="http://box5461.temp.domains/~virginl0/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/RichardMartin-150x150.jpg 150w, http://box5461.temp.domains/~virginl0/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/RichardMartin.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" />VBC is pleased to endorse <strong>Richard Martin</strong>, a lay member of Huguenot Road Church, for the office of <strong>President</strong>. Richard, the current coordinator of deacons at Huguenot Road, is retired from the Virginia Department of Social Services where he was the Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs. A former treasurer of the River City Faith Network (formerly the Richmond Baptist Association), Richard is a trustee of HopeTree Family Services. Richard currently serves as First Vice President of the BGAV.</p>
<p>Robert Lee, Richard&#8217;s pastor, will nominate him for the office of President.</p>

<p><img class="alignleft wp-image-994 size-thumbnail" src="https://virginiabaptistscommitted.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Adam-Tyler-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />VBC endorses <strong>Rev. Dr. Adam Tyler</strong> of Appomattox to serve as <strong>First Vice President</strong>. A graduate of Virginia Tech (BA ’04), Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (MDiv ’07) and Palmer Theological Seminary (DMin, ’13), Adam has served as senior minister at Grace Hills Baptist Church in Appomattox (2009-2018), and before that as senior minister (2005-2009) at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, New Canton.</p>
<p>Adam has served on the Virginia Baptist Mission Board and as BGAV Second Vice President (2016).  He currently serves on the BGAV Executive Board. He also serves as in relief chaplain ministry and has provided leadership in various local and Virginia Baptist ministries and missions.</p>
<p>Adam and his wife Cadance have been married for seven years, and they have a young son in preschool.</p>
<p>Adam will be nominated by Tommy McDearis, pastor of Blacksburg Baptist.</p>

Jack Lawson (Jay) </strong>of Warrenton to serve as <strong>Second Vice President</strong>. A graduate of Duke University (BA ’74) and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (MDiv ’77), Jay has served as associate pastor at Temple Baptist Church Newport News (1977-1979); pastor at Belhaven Baptist (N.C., 1979-1984), pastor of Emmaus Baptist (1984-1992, Poquoson), pastor of Hilton Baptist Church (1992-2000, Newport News), and currently as pastor of Warrenton Baptist Church (2000-today).</p>
<p>Jay is the current chair of V3,  has chaired the Resolutions Committee of the BGAV, has served on the Mission Board of the BGAV in multiple capacities over the years, and has been moderator of both the Peninsula and the NorthStar Associations.</p>
<p>Jay and his wife Claudia have been married for forty-four years, and they have two sons and a daughter. One son is a minister in Virginia. Their daughter is an associate pastor in New Jersey. They have six wonderful grandchildren, and will retire from the pastorate of Warrenton Baptist on February 13, 2019.</p>
<p>Jay will be nominated by Dee Whitten, Executive Director of NorthStar Church Network.</p>

Dr. Herbert Lee Ponder</strong> of Richmond to serve as <strong>Clerk, </strong>following the service of Dr. Fred Anderson as BGAV clerk for 36 terms. Dr. Ponder earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of Pittsburgh, the Master of Divinity Degree and Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology Virginia Union University. He has served as the 8th pastor of the Mount Tabor Baptist Church since 1994. Herbert is the immediate past president of the African American Fellowship of Virginia/BGAV. He is also on the Virginia Baptist Executive Board of the Baptist General Association of Virginia, where he has served as both Secretary and Vice Chair.</p>
<p>Herbert will be nominated by Robert Lee, pastor of Fairwood Agape in Portsmouth.</p>

George Fletcher </strong>of Winchester will be nominated by Mike Clingenpeel to serve as first vice president. A graduate of the University of Virginia (BA ’75) and Southern Seminary (MDiv ’78), George pastored Oak Chapel Baptist Church, Orange (1978-1983),  East Highland Park Baptist Church, Richmond, (1983-1989),  and West Side Baptist Church, Harrisonburg (1989-2001). He recently retired from First Baptist Church, Winchester, after serving there for fifteen years (2001-2016).</p>
<p>George has served on the trustee boards for the Chaplain Services of the Churches of Virginia, The Religious Herald, and HopeTree Family Services. He has also held numerous local and associational positions as well as participated in Virginia Baptist disaster relief response.</p>
<p>Born in Richmond Va., George grew up in Roanoke. He is married to Peggy for forty-one years, and they have two adult children and three grandchildren.</p>

Michael Cheuk </strong>of Charlottesville will be nominated by Reggie Warren to serve as second vice president. A graduate of Rice University (BA ’88), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MDiv ’91) and the University of Virginia (PhD, ’04), Michael has served as senior minister at Farmville Baptist (2005-2012), and as an associate minister (1996-2005) and senior minister (2012-2016) at University Baptist Church, Charlottesville.  After nearly twenty years in congregational ministry, he is beginning a church consulting and leadership coaching ministry.</p>
<p>Michael has chaired the Memorial Committee of the BGAV and the Ministries Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. He currently serves on the board of Baptist Center for Ethics. He is a Christian leadership coach certified by Coach Approach Ministries, and has received church consultant training by the Center for Congregational Health.</p>
<p>Michael and his wife Beth have been married for twenty-four years, and they have a daughter in college and a son in high school.</p>
