The Fredericksburg Impact will complete a three-game road trip to start its W-League season this weekend when they travel to New York to take on the Long Island Rough Riders on Saturday and the New York Magic on Sunday.

Fredericksburg opened the season last Saturday in Virginia Beach, falling 2-1 to the Piranhas. Kara Blosser got on the end of a corner kick by Kimmy Cummings early in the contest, before the hosts rallied for the win. Blosser, a central midfielder, was name to the W-League Team of the Week for her efforts.

The Impact started a young team in the match, with high school junior Halle Parker playing the entire game at sweeper against Virginia Beach’s high octane offense. Fellow high school teammate Sydney Wallace, a sophomore, also saw action late in the match as Fredericksburg searched for a game-tying score.

Fredericksburg created many chances throughout the game, but were unable to put them away, which is something coach Rich Stoneman said the team will need to improve on going forward.

“I think our conference in the W-League is probably the hardest, and our girls got a taste what they did, can and will be able to do moving forward,” he said. “I think they are hungry to be able to travel this weekend and put together a full 90 minutes [in both games].”

Saturday’s game will be the season-opener for Long Island, which finished the 2012 season with a 9-4-0 record. The Rough Riders reached the Eastern Conference semifinals last year as the Northeast Division champion, but fell 4-0 to the Charlotte Eagles.

Long Island is led by Grace Hawkins and Sue Weber. Hawkins was named W-League MVP in 2012 after leading the league in points (38) and goal scoring (17). Weber is a two-time W-League defender of the year winner, who returns to the team after taking off the 2012 season to have a baby.

Coming off a tough 2012 campaign where they finished with a 3-7-2 record, the Magic (1-0-0) opened their season last Saturday with a 2-1 win over the Washington Spirit Reserves at the Maryland SportsPlex.

In the contest, Brittany Pfaff set up Lorena Maggio for the game-tying goal, before scoring the game-winner in the 86th minute as New York tallied twice in the final 15 minutes for the victory. Pfaff was named the W-League Player of the Week with her performance, while teammates Maggio and defender Kelsey Hegg earned Team of the Week honors.

“We expect both teams to be solid,” Stoneman said. “The New York Magic upset the Washington Spirits, which won last year’s Atlantic Division. It’s going to be like a fight in these two matches, and after 90 minutes, we’ll see who’s left standing.”

After the opening loss, and heading into its first home game at Fredericksburg Field House on May 27, Fredericksburg’s players obviously would like to bring home a couple of wins, and hope another week of practice under their belt will be the difference.

“These practices we had this week have set us up going forward,” said midfielder Kimmy Cummings, who returned to the Impact this year after playing with the team in its inaugural season in 2011. “Last weekend we played, we were a little rusty but it wasn’t that bad at all.

“We’ve got some experience on our team, and we are looking for those girls to step up and make this weekend successful.”

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William and Mary men’s soccer head coach Chris Norris has announced the signing of four student-athletes to letters of intent on Thursday. The four-player class is made up of Adam Crenshaw (Sterling, Va., Dominion H.S.), Reilly Maw (Yorktown, Va., Tabb H.S.), Riley Spain (Ijamsville, Md., Urbana H.S.) and Alfonso Speed Jr. (Williamsburg, Va., Lafayette H.S.).
“We are very excited to be adding these four young men to our Tribe Soccer family, stated head coach Chris Norris.” “They have distinguished themselves in the classroom and on the field and we expect them to continue to do so at William and Mary. We expect to compete for conference championships and NCAA tournament bids. These individuals certainly possess the ability and character to help us do so.”

Adam Crenshaw - Sterling, Va.
Dominion H.S.Four-year letterwinner as a midfielder for head coach Lucas Cook at Dominion High School … Named a 2013 team captain … Has posted seven career goals to go along with 21 assists while at Dominion … Plays his club soccer for Loudon 95 Red … Was a former member of the Mclean Academy from 2010-2012 … Son of Joanne and Ryan Crenshaw.

Coach Norris on Crenshaw: “Adam is an exciting, attacking left back. He has great endurance, excellent timing in getting forward, combines well and serves an outstanding ball. In addition, he is a good individual defender. We have had some very influential attacking left backs in our program and are confident that Adam will continue that tradition.”

Reilly Maw – Yorktown, Va.
Tabb H.S.Four-year letterwinner as a forward for head coach Scott Kuhnle at nearby Tabb High School … Earned first-team all-state accolades as junior in 2012 after netting 36 goals … Also garnered first-team all-region and first-team Daily Press all-area distinctions in last year … Was a 2012 Bay Rivers District first-team honoree as Tabb reached the state AA quarter finals … Earned second-team Bay Rivers District and Daily Press all-area accolades in 2011 as Tabb made an appearance in the state AA semifinals … Son of Donna and Scott Maw.

Urbana H.S.Three-year letter winner as a center midfielder for head coach Scott Schartner at Urbana High School … Was a 2012 second-team all-state selection as he ranks seventh all-time at Urbana in career assists … Garnered first-team all-area and all-county accolades in 2012 as he was the Hawks’ team captain … Plays his club soccer for FC Frederick, which earned a top-10 national ranking last year to go along with a Maryland State Cup championship … Plays basketball at Urbana and is a two-time letterwinner for head coach John Cooper … Earned second-team all-area and all-county as a point guard on the hardwood … Son of Joy and Kevin Spain … Father played basketball and baseball at Campbell University

Coach Norris on Spain: “Riley really impressed us at our camp last summer. He is a very good athlete and a great competitor. Riley covers a lot of ground, is a tough tackler and is good in the air. He is humble, extremely hard-working and versatile. Capable of playing numerous roles, we expect Riley to compete for time as a central midfielder, right back or possibly central defender.”

Alfonso Speed Jr. - Williamsburg, Va.

Coach Norris on Speed: “Alfonso is a tremendous team player. While primarily a central defender, he can also play as a right back or defensive midfielder. He is athletic, a good one versus one defender and hates to lose. Alfonso relishes being a leader and is a very good communicator and organizer. He will push to play right away and will add some needed depth to our back four.”

United Goalkeeper Hamid get USMNT Call from Klinsmann

D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid will be returning to the USMNT after being called to the 26 player roster by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

CHICAGO (May 16, 2013) - U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has called in 26 players to begin training camp in Cleveland in advance of the five-game stretch in May and June that includes three FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and the Centennial Celebration Match against Germany. A total of 29 players will participate, including four MLS goalkeepers that will rotate through camp.

The team will begin gathering May 26 in Cleveland, with players arriving at various times as they complete club commitments. The U.S. faces Belgium on May 29 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland (TICKETS), followed by the Centennial Celebration Match against Germany on June 2 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. (TICKETS)
The U.S. then resumes World Cup qualifying with its third road match in four games at Jamaica on June 7 in Kingston. Four days later, the U.S. returns stateside to host Panama on June 11 at CenturyLink Field (TICKETS) in the USA's first qualifier in Seattle since 1976. The team concludes the three-match set at sold-out Rio Tinto Stadium when it welcomes Honduras on June 18 to start the second half of the final round. Though the general ticket sale is closed, fans can still purchase tickets to the game via U.S. Soccer's Complete Travel Packages:

Currently in second place in the Final Round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. could earn as many as nine points in the trio of qualifiers ahead. The team is riding a 21-0-2 unbeaten streak at home in World Cup qualifying and is coming off a pair of impressive results, having collected a 1-0 win against Costa Rica before earning a point in qualifying in Mexico for only the second time in team history.
The roster is stacked with nearly the complete group from those matches, including the game-winning goal scorer against Costa Rica, Clint Dempsey, and Budweiser Man of the Match DaMarcus Beasley. In addition, both Tim Howard and Fabian Johnson return to the fold after missing the March games through injury.
With eight players carrying yellow cards into World Cup qualifying, having 26 players in camp gives Klinsmann flexibility in selections. Additionally, players who have completed their seasons in Europe and Mexico and are candidates for the Gold Cup will be able to continue to train and be evaluated.
The U.S. kicks off the summer schedule against Belgium on May 29 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, WatchESPN and UniMas. The Centennial Celebration Match between the Men's National Team and Germany will be played on June 2 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., as part of U.S. Soccer's 100-year anniversary celebration. Additional Roster Notes

As in March, both Steve Cherundolo (knee) and Timmy Chandler (knee) will be unavailable. Cherundolo has not fully recovered from the injury that kept him out for four months, while Chandler suffered ligament damage May 6 in training.
The U.S. strikeforce is loaded with players scoring goals for both club and country: Clint Dempsey has seven goals in World Cup qualifying in this cycle and 12 overall, and is now tied for first place on the USA's all-time list.
Jozy Altidore tallied 31 goals in all competitions for AZ Alkmaar, breaking the single-season record for an American in Europe that was set by Dempsey (23) last year. Altidore became the first U.S. player to be named to the Dutch Eredivisie Team of the Year.
Eddie Johnson has 10 career goals in qualifying to his credit, tied for second all-time with Brian McBride.
Herculez Gomez has 11 goals in all competitions and is playing for Santos in the Liga MX semifinals after having reached the CONCACAF Champions League final earlier this year. Gomez potted a pair of goals during the Semifinal Round, including the game-winner against Jamaica on Sept. 11, 2012, in Columbus.
Terrence Boyd finished his first season at Rapid Vienna with 15 goals in all competitions.
After two outstanding performances at left back, DaMarcus Beasley is one appearance shy of becoming the 13^th player in MNT history to earn 100 caps. He has 28 career caps in World Cup qualifying, good for fifth-most on the USA's all-time list.
Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler return after the pair impressed in the 0-0 draw against Mexico. In that game, Besler became only the second U.S. player in history to start a World Cup qualifier with fewer than two caps.
Besler replaced Clarence Goodson, who stood firm in the 1-0 win against Costa Rica and was subsequently sidelined with a hamstring injury.
With two straight clean sheets in March, Brad Guzan now has five shutouts in seven matches played in qualifying in his career, posting a 4-1-2 record.
Guzan was voted the Aston Villa Player of the Year by both players and supporters.
Between UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Copa Libertadores and CONCACAF Champions League, a total of 11 U.S. players competed in regional cup competitions this season.
Stuart Holden returns to the U.S. fold for the first time since October of 2010. Klinsmann has already indicated that Holden will be a part of this roster as well as the Gold Cup.
Michael Bradley will compete in the Coppa Italia Final on May 26 in Rome against Lazio.
Edgar Castillo and Joe Corona have continued the historic run with Club Tijuana in the 2013 Copa Libertadores, advancing to the quarterfinals to face Atletico Mineiro on May 22 and May 29.
Sean Johnson (May 26-30), Bill Hamid (May 30-June 2), Tally Hall (June 2-June 8) and Nick Rimando (June 9-19) will all rotate through camp at different stages and serve as the third goalkeeper.

Hat Trick earns Ngwenya Player of the Week honor

TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week Eight of the season on Tuesday, with the Richmond Kickers’ Joseph Ngwenya earning Player of the Week honors after recording a hat trick in the Kickers’ 4-1 victory against Antigua Barracuda FC on Saturday night. The victory allowed the Kickers to remain undefeated this season, while giving Ngwenya five goals.

Ngwenya teamed with fellow Team of the Week selection Nate Robinson on a pair of goals, including the Kickers’ opener in the 18^th minute. Robinson, who had three assists, found space down the left before sending a low ball across the top of the six-yard box that Ngwenya met at the far post.

Five minutes later Ngwenya added a second, heading home a finish after Brian Ownby kept an attack alive with a looping overhead cross that found the midfielder near the right post. Ngwenya then completed his hat trick in the 44^th minute, finishing a free kick by Robinson to give his side a 3-1 halftime lead.

Robinson, who also assisted on Luke Vercollone’s second-half goal, and Ngwenya were joined in the Team of the Week’s midfielder by Dayton’s Joel DeLass, who had a pair of goals in the Dutch Lions’ 4-3 victory against Phoenix FC. DeLass’ 77^th-minute penalty kick proved to be the game-winner as the Wolves rallied late. Completing the midfield quartet was Charleston’s Nicki Paterson, who had a goal and an assist in his side’s 4-2 win against the Wilmington Hammerheads.

Paterson’s teammate John Wilson was also named to the team after scoring his second goal of the season, while Harrisburg’s Greg Jordan and Orlando’s Yann Songo’o also earned defensive berths after helping their team’s record shutouts against Antigua and the Seattle Sounders Reserves. Rochester’s Kristian Nicht earned the nod in goal after an excellent performance against Wilmington last Friday as the Rhinos took their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory.

Orlando City’s Dom Dwyer earned his third consecutive selection to the Team of the Week as he reached double-digits for the season with a pair of goals against the Sounders Reserves. He was joined in attack by two others who struck twice over the weekend, with Harrisburg’s Sainey Touray recording two goals and an assist in the City Islanders’ win against Antigua, and Pittsburgh’s Jose Angulo scoring both goals as the Riverhounds won their first game of the season, 2-1 against Phoenix.

The 2013 USL PRO season continues tonight as the Charlotte Eagles host the Charleston Battery at 7 p.m. ET in a clash that sees the undefeated Eagles aiming to end the Battery’s five-game winning streak. Friday night brings a pair of big games, with league-leader Orlando City visiting the third-place Harrisburg City Islanders at Skyline Sports Complex at 7 p.m. ET. The fourth-place Richmond Kickers and fifth-place Los Angeles Blues also meet on Friday at 7 p.m. ET at City Stadium.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Dayton Dutch Lions, both of whom begin U.S. Open Cup play tonight, meet on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium at 7 p.m. ET. Orlando and Los Angeles also completed their weekend road trips, with the Lions visiting the Rochester Rhinos at Sahlen’s Stadium at 7:05 p.m. ET and the Blues visiting the Wilmington Hammerheads at 7:30 p.m. ET. The weekend concludes on Sunday as the Charleston Battery visit the Houston Dynamo for an interleague clash at BBVA Compass Stadium at 11 a.m. ET.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—Things got off to a great start for the visiting Fredericksburg Impact in Saturday night’s season opener against the Virginia Beach Piranhas at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Unfortunately, the hosts were able to rally and then hang on late for a 2-1 W-League victory.

Fredericksburg (0-1-0) earned a corner kick shortly after kickoff and Kara Blosser leapt high and strongly headed home Kimmy Cummings’ cross to put the Impact up 1-0 under five minutes into the game.

However, the Piranhas (1-0-0) took advantage of a couple early-season miscues to take the lead.

Forward Shan Jones barely got one into the net off the outstretched hand of Fredericksburg goalie Melissa Pacheco in the ninth minute to level the match. Esther Anyanwu then finished off a 2-on-1 break in the 29th minute to put Virginia Beach on top 2-1.

The very entertaining game continued under wet and rainy condition, often with lightning flashing in the distance, until the 67th minute when the game was stopped due to the weather conditions.

After a nearly two-hour delay, the teams returned to the field to cheers from the sparse crowd that still remained.

The Impact showed a lot of energy when play restarted and looked to have leveled the match in the 82nd minute.

Left back Sarah Karlik played a nice ball over top of the Piranhas’ defense to Blosser. The midfielder slotted a shot past Virginia Beach goalie Lauren Vetock only to see the apparent tying score get waived off due to an offside call.

The visitors were unfazed and continued pressing, and were inches from netting the tying goal they were seeking in the 85th minute.

Chelsey Haney beat a Piranhas’ defender to a though ball and slipped a shot past a sliding Vetock, only to see the ball roll agonizingly wide of the left post.

Although disappointed in the final score, Fredericksburg coach Rich Stoneman was pleased with the potential he saw from his side—which had two high schoolers see action on Saturday.

“I think for our first outing we saw some things to build on,” the first-year coach said. “We were young and we had our chances, just didn’t finish. That’s all we have to do moving forward.”

The Impact will continue their three-game road trip to start the season next weekend when they travel to New York.

On Saturday, they take on the Long Island Rough Riders, at 5 p.m., at Cy Donnelly Stadium, before facing the New York Magic on Sunday, at 2 p.m., at Old Boys High School Stadium.

Recently Goalrilla sent us their GAMEMAKERportable soccer goal which we happily tested and here is our review.

We tested the 5X8 model of the GAMEMAKER portable goal which will be available July, 2013.

The description from their website describes the goal as:

The 5x8 GAMEMAKER goal is an excellent starter goal with a variety of uses: a match play goal for the U5’s & U6’s, a training goal for the U9’s to U11’s and a backyard practice goal for players of all ages and abilities. Don’t be fooled by the conventional goal appearance and playability, this goal is transportable and the soft flexible PVC tubing makes it safe during play as well.

Surprisingly compact, the goal arrived in an easy to transport and light weight bag which allows coaches, players, and parents the ability to take the goal with them to practice, a friends house, or even to the beach.

The goal is designed with an inflatable frame which I initially imagined would take a while to "pump up". Anyone who has ever had to inflate a backyard swimming pool knows how time consuming inflating something large can be. This was not the case with the GAMEMAKER because the pump that is included is extremely light wight and effective. The goal was set-up and ready for action in less than 5 minutes!

On to the action, my test subjects where both my children and neighborhood kids as well as a test with my u10 girls team. On grass the goal is easy to secure given the hooks included however since my girls team practices on turf, hooks are not an option. The directions suggested the use of small sand bags to secure the goal but we did not have any available. So we pressed on.

The results from the backyard session with the kids from the neighborhood where great. The children where impressed with the look and size of the goal and the GAMEMAKER easily handled any and all punishment handed out by the kids. Our backyard already contained a trampoline and swing set and the addition of the 5X8 goal did not really take away much more of our play area which was a good thing.

During the practice session with the girls the goal was much more steady than anticipated even without sand bags and since the frame is constructed of an inflated PVC tubing there was little to no risk of injury should the players run into the goal during our drills. Again, the GAMEMAKER did an excellent job standing up to everything the girls could dish out and believe me they where doing there best to "test the limits" of the new practice goal.

Overall with the compact, light weight, portable design, along with the ease of set-up and durability of the GAMEMAKER - VA Soccer News and the kids that helped us test the goal all highly recommend this as a perfect option to add to your backyard collection or coaching tool box. Our only wish is that the goal where more easily secured when used on turf fields. A near perfect 9 our of 10.

Kickers battle Barracuda FC Saturday at City Stadium

RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, May 8, 2013) – The Richmond Kickers continue their eight-game home stand this Saturday, May 11 when they host Antigua Barracuda FC at City Stadium. The match kicks off at 7:00 p.m. and the gates open at 6:00 p.m. with live music from Sunbox, draft beer trucks, food trucks and family zone. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.

Antigua travels to Richmond this week for the first of two match-ups at City Stadium. The two clubs met three times during the 2012 campaign, with the Kickers holding a slight 2-1 edge over their Caribbean rivals. After claiming a 2-0 win in Richmond and narrowly edging the Barracuda 1-0 in Antigua, the Kickers dropped their final regular season match, 2-1, last season.

The Kickers enter Saturday’s game following a back-to-back series against Wilmington and Charlotte last weekend. Claiming three points on the road, veteran midfielder Luke Vercollone converted a second half penalty to give the visitors the lead before 17-year old forward Michael Seaton notched the decisive goal in stoppage time in his professional debut. Twenty-four hours later, the Kickers rallied for a dramatic 3-3 draw with the Eagles after conceding a comfortable lead before a stoppage time comeback courtesy of a Conor Shanosky equalizer.

Meanwhile, Antigua travels to Harrisburg to face the City Islanders on Friday before battling Richmond one day later. Hoping to snap a five-game winless streak this week, the Barracuda most recently dropped points in Tampa and Orlando. Midfielder Tamorley Thomas gave Antigua an 8^th minute lead before the visitors weathered three unanswered goals for a 3-1 loss to expansion franchise VSI Tampa Bay FC. Then, Antigua suffered a 7-2 loss to the league-leaders with second half substitute Hazeley Pyle registering a 76^th minute goal to prevent the shutout.

Players to Watch

Kickers: Two days after his 17^th birthday, forward Michael Seaton (#29) became the youngest player in club history to represent the Kickers when he made his professional debut against the Wilmington Hammerheads on May 3. On loan from D.C. United, the Maryland native signed with D.C. as a Homegrown player in January after impressing with United’s Academy and notched his first professional goal in the Kickers 2-0 win over the Hammerheads last weekend. The Kickers all-time leading scorer, Matthew Delicâte (#7) returned to the lineup Friday for the first time this season after being sidelined through injury. Entering his seventh season with the Kickers, Delicâte eclipsed the franchise’s all-time scoring record in 2012, notching 65 goals and 18 assists in 161 appearances. Goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra (#50) joined the Kickers on loan from D.C. United just prior to the 2013 campaign and has since posted a pair of shutouts and a 3-0-2 record to start the season. While on loan to the Charleston Battery last season, the former VCU goalkeeper led the Battery to a 12-6-2 record en route to the USL PRO Championship title.

Barracuda: Following a string of shutouts to start the season, Antigua & Barbuda National Team midfielder Tamorley Thomas (#13) notched the Barracuda’s first goal of the 2013 campaign with an 8^th minute tally over VSI Tampa Bay FC last weekend. He made his National Team debut on November 11, 2012 during the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification match against Haiti and has since earned 15 caps, including seven World Cup Qualifiers. Nineteen-year old defender Hazeley Pyle (#22) notched his first goal for Antigua last week in the 7-2 loss at Orlando to avoid the shutout. Signing prior to the 2012 season, Pyle also brings Antigua and Barbuda National Team experience to the Barracuda roster. Antigua and Barbuda National Team goalkeeper Molvin James (#18) backstopped the Barracuda to three wins during the 2012 season, posting 56 saves in 15 appearances. He signed with the Barracudas in 2011 after spending four seasons in the Antiguan First Division.

U.S. Open Cup Second Round Pairings Announced

The Richmond Kickers will enter the 100^th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the Second Round on Tuesday, May 21 when they host the winner of the First Round match-up between the Brooklyn Italians of the NPSL and Icon FC of the USASA at City Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Second Round winners will be paired against 16 MLS sides on Tuesday, May 28.

The tournament kicks off Tuesday with two play-in matches between amateur clubs, followed by the First Round on Tuesday, May 14 when the two play-in round winners are joined by 30 other amateur sides. The Kickers join seven other USL PRO clubs and six North American Soccer League (NASL) teams for the Second Round one week later.

The 2013 season marks the 15th time the Richmond Kickers have qualified for the U.S. Open Cup over the past 20 seasons, with an overall record of 24-13 during tournament play. The Kickers claimed the U.S. Open Cup title the first year of the Professional Era in 1995 and have since made it to the quarterfinal round five times (1995, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2011) and the semifinal round twice (1995, 2011). Ousting five Major League Soccer teams along the way, including Colorado Rapids in 2000, D.C. United in 2004, LA Galaxy in 2007 and Columbus Crew and Sporting Kansas City in 2011, the Kickers became the first lower division team to defeat back-to-back MLS teams on the road. With 82 total goals scored during the Open Cup, the Kickers have set several franchise records, as well as a Professional Era U.S. Open Cup record for most goals (12) during the 8-4 rout over the Ocean City Barons in 2005 and Kickers midfielder David Bulow is the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 14 goals.

Kickers 2-0 Hammerheads

WILMINGTON, NC – The Richmond Kickers claimed a 2-0 win in Wilmington Friday night during their first road trip of the season and the opening leg of a back-to-back weekend. Veteran midfielder Luke Vercollone converted a second half penalty to give the visitors the lead before 17-year old forward Michael Seaton notched the decisive goal in stoppage time in his professional debut.

Wilmington saw the first good chance of the night when defender Uriah Bentick whipped in a cross from the left side of the box. Midfielder Will Heaney tested Kickers goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra early when he won the ball in the air but his header whizzed just wide of the target.

Despite the early pressure, it was the visitors who nearly opened scoring in the 33^rd minute when midfielder Nate Robinson fired a determined strike from the right flank. His effort skimmed the underside of the crossbar before falling to Michael Seaton, parked at the left post, but the 17-year old forward’s attempt to bury the rebound was ruled offside.

Just before the break, the Hammerheads nearly capitalized on a long throw-in deep in the left corner when forward Christian Davidson served the ball into the box, only to see it ricochet out to the top of the 18. A well-positioned Arron Patrick rushed onto the loose ball and unleashed a driven shot into the pack but his attempt was cleared by Kickers defenders.

Following the restart, the Hammerheads pressed for the icebreaker when Parratt fired a powerful distance shot that forced Dykstra to dive to his right as the ball whistled just passed the upright.

The scales tipped in favor of the away side 20 minutes later when Vercollone stole the ball at midfield and steamrolled through the field towards the box. Approaching the 18 yard line, he fed the ball to Joseph Ngwenya who was denied by Bentick. Kickers defender Alex Lee delivered the resulting throw-in and once again found an onrushing Ngwenya who sent his second consecutive shot skyward.

Then, in attempt to block Robinon’s shot from the top of the box, a Wilmington defender’s handball inches from the 18 yard line earned the Kickers a penalty. Vercollone stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball into the right corner to take the lead.

With two minutes remaining in regulation, the Hammerheads searched for the equalizer when Heaney’s inswinging corner kick connected with Bentick but his close range header sailed just over the crossbar.

With the final seconds of stoppage time looming near, Seaton took advantage of a rebound in Wilmington territory and powered down the field on a breakway. Facing Tuttle 1v1, he coolly slipped the ball past the diving goalkeeper to send the Kickers home with three points.

Kickers 3-3 Eagles

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers rallied for a thrilling 3-3 draw against the Charlotte Eagles on a brisk spring Saturday evening at City Stadium. The home side claimed an early advantage courtesy of goals by Brian Ownby and Stanley Nyazamba, only to concede a pair of tallies as Drew Yates and Stefan Smith leveled the score in the second half. Eagles forward Shaun Francis broke the deadlock in the 90^th minute, leaving Kickers defender Conor Shanosky to bury the equalizer with seconds remaining in stoppage time to salvage a point.

Despite the dramatic finish, the match got off to a slow start until the Eagles challenged Dykstra in the 13^th minute. Midfielder Sam Asante sliced through the midfield and played a long ball to Ben Newman deep on the right flank. The Eagles defender served the ball to the far post to an awaiting Jorge Herrera but the Kickers goalkeeper easily collected his shot and cleared it out to the midfield where Ownby collected the loose ball and carried it into Eagles territory. Beating his last defender, he faced goalkeeper Eric Reed 1v1 and calmly played a soft ball into the far right corner as the Eagles goalkeeper charged off his line to give the Kickers a 1-0 lead.

Fueled by his first goal, Ownby turned playmaker in the 34^th minute when he battled for the ball at the top of the box. The heavily marked midfielder got a nod off as Nyazamba rushed onto his header and slotted a low ball inside the right post from 12 yards to send the Kickers into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage.

Following the restart, the Eagles cut the deficit in half when Francis received a long ball and slid it across the goal mouth, finding Yates at the left post who made no mistake from point blank range.

Gaining momentum, Dykstra weathered a barrage of shots, throwing his body into the line of fire but the Eagles persistence paid off in the 78^th minute when a heroic save resulted in a Charlotte corner. Midfielder Mitch Waul delivered an inswinger into the mix, finding Smith who deftly played the ball over the goalkeeper’s fingertips and into the back of the net.

With less than five minutes remaining, the Kickers struck the crossbar and watched a dangerous free kick whistle just over the woodwork before Francis’ lofted ball from the top of the box skimmed just underneath the bar for what was sure to be the game-winner.

The Eagles celebrations were cut short in stoppage time when the Kickers capped off scoring with seconds left in regulation. Forward Casey Townsend flicked the ball on to Sascha Görres on the right flank who whipped the ball across the box to Nate Robinson on the left wing but the midfielder’s header was cleared off the line for a corner. As the ball swooped into the crowded box, 17-year old Michael Seaton fired a shot that rebounded off the underside of the crossbar and fell to the feet of Shanosky who tapped it over the line.

The Richmond Kickers return to City Stadium next Saturday, May 11 to host Antigua Barracuda FC at 7:00 p.m. The first 500 fans through the gate will receive a t-shirt, courtesy of Dr. Babik and tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer program has announced that six players will join the Cavalier program for the 2013 season. Tori Hanway (Washington, D.C.), Nicole Johnson (McLean, Va.), Morgan Reuther (Chantilly, Va.), Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) and Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) will make up the Cavaliers’ first-year class this fall. They are joined by Annie Steinlage (Grand Haven, Mich.), who transferred to Virginia after three seasons at Michigan State.

The class includes two NSCAA All-Americans and two players with youth national team experience. In addition, Steinlage comes to Virginia after earning first-team All-Big Ten honors the last two seasons at Michigan State, earning All-America honors last year.

“We are very excited about the players and people who make up our 2013 class, especially when we add them to our current team,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “From a positional standpoint, we fill many of our needs due to graduation. The most exciting aspect of this year’s class as a whole is how much they will add to our style of play, how well they fit into our team culture, and how motivated they are to continue to develop as players and help our team achieve our goals. It is always hard to predict how quickly each player will impact the team, but we feel strongly that over the next four years, each of them, particularly given their work ethic, will leave their mark on our program.”

These six players will join 19 returning players, including eight starters, from last year’s squad. The 2012 ACC Champions went 18-5-1, finishing the season ranked No. 10 nationally, and reaching the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. It was Virginia’s 19th consecutive NCAA appearance (third longest streak nationally) and its 25th overall NCAA appearance.

“I also would like to express my appreciation for all the hard work both (assistant coaches) Ron (Raab) and Kerry (Dziczkaniec) did to help bring together such a talented class,” added Swanson. “Due to my commitments with the U-20 team this past year, both of them took on more responsibilities, especially with regard to recruiting and the 2013 class is a testament to all their efforts. I know they share in everyone's enthusiasm about the potential of this year’s team and class.”
