New Study Reveals Most Dangerous Cars on the Road

Every car maker boasts about their commitment to safety. Each new vehicle developed is touted as a triumph of extensive research and testing to create a machine that will keep you and your family safe in the event of an accident. Unfortunately, not all cars can deliver on those promises. To give the general public a truer grasp on a vehicle's performance in a potential crash, independent research is needed.

To fill that role, federal crash tests are designed to replicate the kinds of collisions situations that could befall a vehicle while operating in the real world, and rate their effectiveness in sparing occupants from harm. A number of organizations conduct such testing, from nonprofit groups like the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, companies like Consumer Reports and JD Power and Associates, and government agencies like the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration. In a newly released study, the company 24/7 Wall St. has analyzed such testing from each of these organizations and compiled a list of the seven most dangerous current-generation vehicles on the road today.

The main point of focus in the research was on the IIHS's four categories of crash testing, and those cars that featured marginal (the 2nd lowest score) or poor (the lowest) scores in at least two, supplemented by results from Consumer Reports, JD Power and Associates Initial Quality reports. The four categories were frontal crashes where a vehicle hits a barrier head on at 40 miles per hour, side-impact crashes in which a 3,300 lb object collides with the driver's side at 31 miles per hour, rollover ratings where force is applied to the corner of a vehicle to determine the level of force required to tip it, and rear impact crashes focusing on the ability of seats and seatbelts to protect occupants from whiplash.

Overall, the most common issues with these dubious vehicles were in the rear impact and rollover categories. 6 of the 7 vehicles received "marginal" ratings for the two categories, demonstrating a clear inability to handle collisions from the rear, or stay upright in the event of sudden turning across a number of auto makers. Side impact issues were the next most common issues, with one receiving a "marginal" rating and two netting a "poor" rating.

The first vehicle on the list is the Dodge Ram 1500 truck, which features a marginal rating in both side impacts and rollovers. The Ram has a long history of poor performance in crash testing, receiving a failing grade in frontal crash tests from 1998 to 2001, and repeatedly receiving poor ratings in the protection offered from seat restraints. Some improvement has been made, however, as the current iteration scored a "good" rating in frontal crash rating. Next is the Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab truck, which features a "poor" rating in side impacts, and "marginal" ratings in rollover and rear impact tests. The vehicle also struggled through a recent recall in November of 2011 over faulty seatbelts. Two Mazda SUVs made the list, with the CX-7 and CX-9 both scoring "marginal" ratings in rear impact and rollover testing, with the CX-9 also carrying the distinction of having the lowest strength to weight ratio of any midsized SUV tested by the IIHS (strength to weight ratio is calculated by recording how much force is required to collapse it's roof 5 inches, divided by weight). The Nissan Pathfinder also netted a "marginal" rating in both rollover and rear impact tests, and was given a staggeringly high 20 to 30% risk of rollovers during government testing.

The two worst offenders are the Jeep Wrangler, scoring "marginal" results across all categories (and a "poor" side impact rating in the two door version), and the Suzuki SX4, which was also given "marginal" ratings in rollover and rear impact testing, as well as consistently poor ratings throughout all other organizational testing, including an overall score of 2/5 in initial quality from JP Power.

Interestingly, despite the potential safety dangers, the overall sales of these seven vehicles have increased 19% from 2010 to 201, according to Edmunds.com, though not every model is seeing individual growth. The Dodge Ram 1500 continues to see sales in the 100,000s, with over 156,000 sold in 2011. The Jeep Wrangler is also maintaining sales in 120,000s range despite its poor performance, and the Mazda CX-9 has seen consistent growth in sales over the last several years. The Chevy Colorado Crew Cab and Suzuki SX4 are the detractors of the group, seeing dramatic decreases in sales over the past five years. The Colorado has seen a drop of more than 60% since 2007, and the SX4 has dropped a sizable 40%. The Mazda CX-7 is being phased out for the newer CX-5 model, and the Nissan Pathfinder is struggling to keep up with the similarly priced CX-9 and Wrangler.

Drunk Driving Accident Claims Life of VCU Student

A Virginia Commonwealth University student, Carolina Perez, 19, of Virginia Beach, was killed in a car accident in Richmond on February 23, 2012. The driver of the Yaris and another passenger, also students at VCU, were hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries.

Varinder Chahal, of Springfield, was traveling with four other passengers when he ran a red light and crashed into the Yaris. The Yaris then spun and hit a building. Chahal and the passengers in his car were uninjured.

Chahal has been charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a blood alcohol test. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Richmond General District Court on March 22, 2012.
