Before you charge off and starting creating a website, getting programmers and help with writing copy, all with dollar signs in your eyes, consider taking a little extra time to plan and do research. One of the things internet business newbies frequently do is to run off into a bunch of different directions that don’t produce the kind of business success you desire. So often what happens is you see others succeeding, making what looks to be easy money, and you might feel the urge to charge in. Take a moment and relax. Spending a little extra time now can save you a lot of headaches later, and can help you get to earning money faster.

It may be helpful to consider that each stage of building your online business is like a little world all by itself. Choosing a profitable niche is its own world with rules, jargon and practices that are more or less effective. Once your site is built and you’re looking to drive traffic, there is another world of language an ideas that you’ll find yourself in. You don’t have to know everything, but being informed can make a difference.

The funeral business might not be the first place you’d look for inspiring new products or services. But in recessionary times, necessity drives invention all across the economy. So when Louis Salazar quit the undertaking company his great-grandfather had founded and launched one of his own, he had to think outside the casket.

Salazar had seen the warning signs back in 2004, when his customers started choosing $1,000 cremations over full-service burials costing $3,000 to $7,000. So he and his wife, Gloria, decided to get personal. Death wasn’t just an opportunity for grim commiseration, after all. What about celebrating unique individuals and the lives they lived?

With the exquisite delicacy of undertakers, they started interviewing customers about the dearly departed in order to brainstorm how best to honor them.

It worked. In the past five years the Salazars have hauled furniture, fishing poles and a Harley-Davidson into their funeral home for services. They have held fully catered memorials on golf courses. So in more difficult economic times, it stands to reason that most small business owners shouldn’t even consider it. Yet, according to Peter Hans of Resort Maps, creator of more than 90 customized travel maps across the United States, England and Puerto Rico, that kind of thinking could end up costing the small business owner far more than he or she might lose by taking some time off.

“It’s the very nature of a small business owner to think that they’re indispensible and that if they take some time off, they will miss an opportunity. The truth is by not taking the time off to recharge your batteries, you run a bigger risk of not performing at the level you need to be at to be successful in business,” said Peter Hans, president of Resort Maps Franchise, Inc.

So, how does the small business owner take a vacation and keep his or her business viable? Hans says there are ways to accomplish both, including:

Planning to take one week off per year and budgeting accordingly. Make your vendors and customers aware that you will be taking time off for a certain period well in advance.

Partnering with like businesses to cover for you while you’re gone (e.g. the owner of a telecommunications company services accounts for the owner of another telecom company, so he/she can take vacation). That favor is then returned so the other owner can take vacation. Continue reading this post.

Over the last week a heated debate has been raging here on IPWatchdog.com regarding whether patents should exist at all. See Reality Check: Anti-Patent Patent Musings Simply Bizarre and Responding to Critics: My View on Patents & Innovation. I have offered a point by point debate where everyone answers the same question in 300 to 500 words, and as yet I have no takers, so you can decide yourself why that is. Notwithstanding, this firestorm started when I questioned why any inventor or company would want a patent attorney representing them who has as his articulated position that 0 years of patent term is the most appropriate solution. If there are those out there who think a patent without any term or exclusive rights is best then they have the right to exercise their preference by simply ignoring patents altogether. Of course, when other companies do get patents and do use the rights and law to their benefit these same folks cry foul. Simply put, you cannot have your cake and eat it too! If you don’t like patents then don’t get them, but then also expect to be a target of all those in your industry who do get patents.

You see, this is the problem of the Patent Troll. The reason giant companies hate patent trolls is because they are not capable of being counter-sued. There is no deterrent effect because patent trolls do not make, use or sell anything, they just sue. So giant companies are targets in the same way that smaller companies without patents are targets of big companies with patents. No one should aspire to be a target. A simple truth is that a small business without patents might as well dress themselves up as a buck during hunting season complete with a bulls-eye pre-drawn. So here is the case for every business to get patents, particularly software patents. Ignore it if you like, but you do so at your own peril.

To a certain extent, becoming an entrepreneur requires you to be a multi-talented individual. First and foremost, however, you need to be driven and have a firm desire to be your own boss. You should be very tenacious and not be willing to take the word “no” for an answer easily. If you understand that you will be faced with a long, seemingly never-ending, list of problems, yet see your glass as being always half-full, then you are off to the races!

Do not underestimate the amount of time and effort and raw energy that it requires to be a successful entrepreneur. You will need a good list of people skills, with the ability to be persuasive and to motivate. Be prepared to be the driving force at all times and understand that you are probably your organization’s most valuable asset. You should be able to do everything that you expect from others (should you employ them within your organization) at a push.
