The Virtual Gastric Band is a relatively new hypnosis procedure developed as an alternative to Gastric Band weight loss surgery. Using hypnotic suggestions a virtual gastric band is “installed” in a person’s stomach and thereby helps to control portion sizes The result is the individual becomes fuller quicker and satisfied on smaller portions of food which lead to weight loss. The Virtual Gastric Band procedure offers all the benefits of the surgery but because no operation takes place none of the risks, discomfort and recovery time of real surgery. The hypnosis technique was developed in Europe where it’s enjoying widespread success under different names and slightly varying techniques. Discover more about this procedure here...

Anchoring is a key technique used in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and helps people achieve outcomes in life they desire. Here's a quick primer on the topic. NLP is an alternative therapy that can be engaged to change emotional behavior and achieve self-awareness and effective communication. Examples in the real world include helping with smoking cessation, weight loss and building rapport and relationships. I use elements of NLP in my Virtual Gastric Band program as a tool and resource for clients to use if they're subjected to food cravings. Here's more...

As the old joke has it, the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Although the joke relies on a clearly absurd premise, there is a lot of truth to it: any big task is best handled one piece at a time. Whether you’re talking about sending a man to the moon, digging the Panama canal or your own battle to lose weight, the biggest jobs all rely on many small steps toward an ultimate goal. In fact, if we take the phrase “one bite at a time” literally, we have what is perhaps the most effective weight loss strategy there is. A lot of people struggle with weight loss, either hitting a plateau after a certain point or gaining back what they’ve lost. However, weight loss really can be approached one bite (or more to the point, one meal) at a time. Find out more here...

As the old saying goes, you are what you eat. For a lot of us, that’s an unsettling prospect. After all, we eat different foods at different times depending on our moods. You’ve probably asked (or been asked) the question “what are you in the mood for” in relation to food and the question is an apt one; our emotional states and our diets are deeply connected. There are two different ways to look at emotional eating: you may either choose to eat a particular food because you’re in the mood for it or you might choose to eat something, especially compulsively, because your moods trigger negative patterns of thinking where food becomes your coping mechanism when you’re experiencing emotional distress. Which of these two types of emotional eating describes you?

Why is it a lot of people fail in their efforts to lose weight? Why is it that so many fail to stick to their diet and then regain all of the weight they’d lost and some in a matter of a few weeks? Some diets aren’t that well planned, but most of them work as long as you stick to them, so the problem is the dieter rather than the diet. I’ve spent a lot of time over the years thinking about this and I’ve realized that there are 5 different types of people who have a hard time losing weight and keeping it off over the long term. Read this and find out if you're one of these types...

They’re not good for our teeth and when they’re eaten regularly, they can lead to rapid weight gain and a variety of health problems related to obesity. Although we all know that sugar and especially refined sugar isn’t good for us, what a lot of us don’t know is that sugar can be addictive, in a manner of speaking. What a lot of people are also unaware of is that like sugar, other refined carbohydrates can be just as bad for you and are often similarly addictive. Worse still, it’s difficult to get away from refined carbohydrates unless you’re very conscious about your diet. Here's more and a resource to help...

The size of the average portion of food we eat at a meal contributes to the obesity epidemic sweeping America. We’ve become accustomed to restaurant size portions when we go out and then we repeat it at home. Our dinner plates are larger than necessary and we feel the need to fill the plate with generous portions of everything.

As soon as we think fat we have visions of weighing too much and not looking as good as we wish. What we often don’t think about is how our bodies store fat and why. Fat does have a purpose and it’s a good one. But when a person has too much fat on the body it can become a problem and eventual leads to obesity and major health problems. A simple explanation is fat is stored when our caloric intake on a routine basis exceeds our expenditure of calories. However, fat storing is a little more complicated in the real world as certain foods turn to sugar and fat more easily than others.

Most weight loss programs fail because they over promise and don’t tackle all the elements for weight loss to be permanent. Weight loss plans can take different forms. Some are just diets while others are a combination of dieting and physical activity. Weight loss plans that promise you’ll lose 15 to 20 pounds in two weeks (or worse, in one week!) are unrealistic. While some plans can produce amazing results at end of first week of plan this is what I call the "gung-ho" effect and caused by being enthusiastic and totally compliant with the demands of the program. Then week two and three comes and life begins to get in the way and your resolve is tested and maybe you're not quite so compliant.

We can chuckle because we instinctively know what its saying. Change is going to happen – it’s one of the few certain things in life – but we’d much rather it happens to somebody else first than us and leave us alone. Paradoxically, in the corporate world, the people who bring change to others are usually the worse to embrace change. People, generally, fight change, even when it’s good and necessary because it moves us out of our comfort zone.
