Esta navidad hubiera sido una navidad negra, donde DELL, AMAZON y LG se podrían haber comido mi presupuesto navideño, lógicamente todo no ha sido malo, por lo que me he decidido a analizaros los 3 casos y así podéis tomar vuestras propias conclusiones.

AMAZON:

Compré un disipador en Abril del 2015, en diciembre de ese mismo año el disipador se estropeo . Amazon podría lavarse las manos, su política de devolución es de 45 días y decirme que recurriera al fabricante con la garantía. Después de hablar con ellos y explicarles que lo empleo para trabajar el ordenador y que no tendría computadora , me permitió su devolución y compra de uno nuevo, con lo que en 24h disponía de ordenador otra vez.

Que se puede decir malo de eso! NADA!!!

DELL:

Compré un ordenador en Agosto del 2013 , el ordenador fallo a los 2 años y 3 meses. Dell me ofrece como contraprestacion una reparación de 557€ la baja a 427€.

Dell utiliza todas las artimañas posibles para defenderse, desde que el ordenador no era para gráficos, aunque aparece en la publicidad con software de gráficos. Que ya me habían regalado 1 año de garantía y no tenían por que....

Al final pedí una placa base en china y la puse yo. Cuando sustituí la placa base me dí cuenta que no era ese el error, sino el cable que une la pantalla LCD con la placa base. Ni siquiera el presupuesto se ajustaba.

Mi pregunta es ¿Que hubiera hecho el técnico de Dell? ¿hubiera sustituido la pieza ante la ignorancia de su cliente? ¿o hubiera cambiado el cablecito

Al final coste de la reparación 0. Eso si nunca más compraremos en DELL. En 50 minutos cambié 2 veces la placa base del portatil, ese es el tiempo que se tarda sin haber desmontado nunca ese cacharro, el precio de la reparación Abusivo.

LG:

La verdad que LG para mi era la marca por excelencia pero aunque han reparado su error sin transmitirlo al cliente , a veces, es verdad que sus electrodomésticos suelen fallar cerca de las zonas de garantía.

Un frigorífico me falló y ellos me lo arreglaron incluso gratis, entendiendo que eso no podía ser con 2 años y meses.

La televisión fallo en periodo de garantía.

Esta navidad ha sido la lavadora después de cumplir 7 años y con la garantía fuera del motor que son 7. fallaron los rodamientos interiores. El presupuesto no es desmesurado 350 euros para las horas de trabajos, pero muchas veces no compensa por que te sale mejor uno nuevo.

Así que procedí a repararlo yo mismo, son muchas horas de trabajo y 80 euros en piezas.

ÚLTIMO EMAIL A DELL ? ESTO ES UNA EMPRESA SERIA

Antecedentes compré un Dell inspirion 17r restaurado por Dell y vendido por un tercero en Ebay EEUU con garantía de 6 meses, el ordenador estaba fabricado en Enero 2013 (datos facilitados por Dell). La fecha de compra 6 de Agosto del 2013.

Buenas tardes,

Ricardo yo creo que por salud lo vamos a dejar aquí, yo mi batalla ahora ha cambiado de lugar no es tanto pensar que Dell me ayudará a pensar que Dell presuntamente está engañando a sus clientes.

A estas alturas nadie discute :

1.- La fecha de fabricación del ordenador es Enero 2013

2.- La fecha de compra mía Agosto 2013 con garantía Dell 6 meses ó 1 año desde fabricación hasta 1 Enero 2014

3.- El ordenador en cualquier caso y país esta fuera de garantía. 6 meses, 1 año ó 2 como es España

Nadie discute esto la parte real.

La parte moral:

1.- Ese ordenador porque falló la primera vez, si falló (como tu muy bien dices.), Dell si fuera una empresa responsable hubiera revisado

2.- Es de recibo que a tus clientes le duren los dispositivos de 1000 euros, 2 años y 3 meses. Dell es una empresa que se pone en situación , ¿tu que crees?

3.- Las características técnicas del dispositivo. HD nativo. i7 con 8GB de Ram y una tarjeta gráfica con 2GB dedicados.

Contestaciones a la parte moral:

1a.- No sabemos por que falló pero viendo el historial de Dell pues no da mucha seguridad y menos la manera de proceder.

2a.- Dell me ofrece como contrapestacion una reparación de 557€ la baja a 427€. Como te he comentado como comprador de productos Dell a largo plazo me parece un robo, me parece que la empresa me dice jodete haber sacado el seguro, que para eso lo ponemos nada apretas comprar ordenador y si no lo tienes pagas o te dan por culo. Tu puedes interpretar lo que quieras.

3a.- Dell a través de ti y de Oscar Ameth Medina Nieto argumentan que el fallo cabe la posibilidad de:

“..... le recomendamos la gama Precision y no reparar este producto que fue diseñado para un uso doméstico y no profesional ya descatalogado. “

"Lamentablemente su equipo que ha sido diseñado para un entorno doméstico (navegar por internet, email y Word más o menos) ..."

"Con esto le digo y le insisto Sr. Israel que la gama Inspiron es para uso doméstico no comercial y mucho menos para el diseño"

A lo que te he contestado varias veces diciendo no hagas spam y pongan cosas que no es verdad, las especificaciones técnicas de ese equipo no son para word, por mucho que me quieras vender la moto, que a viejecitas puedes engañar pero no a mi. Y lo último que te he enviado son las especificaciones técnicas de mi ordenador que presupongo que ni te has molestado en ver. En dichas especificaciones se ve el ordenador con un programa de post producción digital de alto nivel (En una fotografía tocate los hue...).

Te vuelvo a dejar las especificaciones técnicas para que tu y Oscar os las aprendáis y sepáis lo que vendéis, y cabe la posibilidad de denunciar a Dell con vuestros comentarios y las imágenes que he capturado , por están vendiendo maquinas que no están pensadas para las atribuciones que aparecen como vosotros aseguráis por diferentes canales. ESTO ES UN DELITO LO SABES Y NO CADUCA

Todo confirma mis temores que vais con un protocolo, que os aleja del trato cercano de Amazon y que no empatizais con los clientes, pese a que hay muchas posibilidades de que el ordenador estuviera mal de base. Ya se ya se me vas a decir que se me ha ofrecido 427€ que solo se cobra la pieza. Quieres un Seat Ibiza en 26.000 euros por que es lo que me estás diciendo.

Y como te he comentado, tu ganas, te ahorras 200 euros, que es lo que separaba a la compañía de tener un cliente que en la horquilla de 150-250 euros hubiera pagado por el arreglo a un hijo de la gran puta , encabronado, psicopatía, obsesivo y metódico que no le gustan que le tomen por estúpido.

Ahora te pregunto:

En este País hay libertad de expresión pero también para contar mi experiencia personal y como te comenté aunque de momento solo 400 amigos me han leído, espero concienciar a mucha gente que les puede pasar lo mismo que a mi, que Dell no es la empresa que se ve, que aunque su canal de venta esté alejado de mediamark, wortem no es por que el producto sea bueno o por que velen por el cliente, sino por que es a mi modo de ver una factoría de vender garantías y si no lo haces corres mi riesgo por que la empresa no está detrás para evaluar de manera individual los casos.

Como le he indicado en una de mis comunicaciones, Dell Estados Unidos ofrece estos productos (Refurbished) por eBay con una garantía de 30 días. Por supuesto, ampliable por el revendedor o por el propio cliente final.

Los productos adquiridos en la web dedicada de Dell para tal comercio están provistos de 100 días de garantía. Igualmente ampliable por el cliente.

Para nosotros no es una información crucial ya que aunque su máquina estuviera provista de solo 30 días, 100 días o 6 meses como asegura usted, cuando hemos hecho la transferencia se le ha dado en España garantía hasta el pasado 8/1/2014.

¿Podría usted indicarme cuanto ha tenido que pagar por tener el equipo en garantía hasta dicha fecha? En el supuesto de que no tuviera que pagar, ¿Cree usted que ampliar la garantía hasta dicha fecha es gratis, no nos cuesta?.

También le he indicado que no puedo facilitarle el historial del equipo cuando estaba en Estados Unidos ni el motivo por el cual el cliente estadounidense decidió devolverlo. Dicha información es confidencial. Yo le invito a que vuelva a leer mi comunicación con fecha 11 de diciembre de 2015. A buen entendedor…

Según su punto de vista, nuestras recomendaciones no son válidas ya que el Inspiron provisto de HD nativo, i7 con 8GB de Ram y una tarjeta gráfica de 2GB cumple la misma función que una estación de trabajo con i7, 8GB de Ram y tarjeta de 2GB (de la época).

No entiendo cómo es posible que los fabricantes diseñen y dividan sus productos para entornos domésticos, Gamers, Empresas,.. si al final pueden llevar un mismo procesador, la misma cantidad de memoria y tarjetas gráficas de 2GB o más.

Sí, efectivamente le hemos bajado el precio de la intervención sin estar obligados a ello. Al igual que usted no está obligado a reparar el equipo con Dell, eso ya se lo he dicho antes. Existen alternativas.

El link que me ha pasado es de Dell en Estados Unidos, no corresponde a Dell España. No puedo opinar si es o no es denunciable ya que desconozco cómo funcionan las leyes en dicho país.

No sé si el software que aparece en una de las imágenes es un programa de post producción digital de alto nivel, no se lo puedo confirmar, pero siguiendo esa conclusión ¿y los coches que salen en las imágenes?.

Efectivamente señor Israel, tenemos libertad de expresión pero igualmente y lamentablemente también podemos ser víctimas de la censura. ¿Quiere un ejemplo?.

Yo lamentablemente discrepo de su punto de vista, estudiamos caso por caso, le parezca útil o no, se le ha aconsejado, se le han dado alternativas, también le hemos informado sobre su garantía y lo que hemos hecho, como funcionan en el mercado de Estados Unidos etc..

MI OPINIÓN: ESTÁ PENSADO PARA NO DURAR, LOS FALLOS FATALES SON MÁS COMUNES DE LO ESPERADO, NO EXISTE UN JUSTO PRECIO EN LA REPARACIÓN POR QUE NO INTERESA Y YO PERSONALMENTE ME SIENTO ENGAÑADO.

Ahora paso a explicarte

Una vez roto como tapa de bater de diseño

Hace 2 años y 4 meses compré un ordenador DELL inspirion r17 edicion limitada más o menos 1000 euros de ordenador incluyendo aduana. Lo compré a un vendedor de productos refurbished de DELL con garantía DELL en vigor OJO!!.

¿Refurbished? Es un producto que o se ha devuelto por alguna circunstancia o ha sufrido un fallo, pero DELL en este caso certifica que está en perfecto estado, como si fuera nuevo.

El mes pasado se averió con un error 8 pitidos, que significó esto en un ordenador de 2 años y 3 meses, pues según DELL que tiene incluso por teléfono claro lo que le pasa, era un fallo en la placa base, para repararlo costaba 555,96€ con la coletilla “esperando que sea de su agrado” después de batallar incluso con Ricardo P. del departamento de CBS Advanced Resolution Group , me ofrecieron un descuento a 427,90€ con la coletilla esta vez “esperando que sea de su interés.”

SIN COBRAR MANO DE OBRA UNICAMENTE LA PIEZA, 427,90€ EN ESTE CASO LA PLACA BASE.

Lógicamente sabiendo del pasado de Dell cuando vendió deliberadamente más de 11,8 millones de equipos OptiPlex con fallos entre 2003 y 2005, pues te quedas con la mosca y fastidiado, 2 años y para tirar el ordenador, encima lo ven normal , si no lean abajo.

Te argumentan las siguientes de soluciones si no te gusta su presupuesto :

“Podría ser más recomendable para usted adquirir un producto nuevo y visto que podría ser usado para la edición de video, nosotros le recomendamos la gama Precision y no reparar este producto que fue diseñado para un uso doméstico y no profesional ya descatalogado. “
Como se ve en la imagen de la izquierda sacada de la web de DELL aparece un inspirion con un after effects abierto, un programa de post producción por excelencia.

De las palabras de DELL es un producto desechable, descatalogado con 2 años , vamos como si fuera un modelo viejo(tiene solo 2 años y 4 meses) un i7 con 8GB de Ram y una GPU con 2 GB dedicados. Si los inspirions están pensados para internet, email y word deberían comunicar al cliente las limitaciones antes de venderse, por que por hardware que ponen Nvidia con 2GB de Ram dedicada por ejemplo no lo dejan claro. Si no se puede trabajar en video y 3D, menos se puede jugar con ellos consume más recursos y hace que el ordenador esté más al limite de manera continua, deberían especificarlo en la caja y en las descripción del producto. Y tampoco deberían de publicitarlo con un after effects abierto

“El cliente puede encontrar dichas piezas y servicios a través de otros proveedores alternativos”.

Cosas que sacas en claro:

1.- No tienen intención de arreglar los ordenadores a justo precio, por lo visto estos fallos son comunes, más de lo que debería de permitir consumo. En realidad no tienen intención de repararlo, incluso cuando es un fallo de arquitectura y calor, esta es mi impresión.

DELL argumenta

"En cuanto al tema que usted denomina reballing/reflow, tanto Dell España como Dell USA sustituye la pieza y enviamos la afectada para su destrucción siguiendo nuestras políticas de reciclaje y compromiso con el medioambiente."

2.- Si se destruyen las placas de donde sale este mercado de placas, como en el mercado de segunda mano encuentras estas ofertas de placas de DELL tan masivo y con unos precios más justos rondando los 100 euros, este vendedor ha vendido 45 placas de este modelo y hay muchos vendedores. Porque ellos no pueden vender la placa nueva a un precio razonable entre 150-250 euros, con este dinero te compras una muy buena placa de un estacionario.

Como conclusión de esta parte es tan difícil fabricarla para que no salten las soldaduras del chip gráfico que es el fallo más común...

3.- 2 años y 3 meses DELL dice al cliente producto descatalogado, tal vez más interesante comprarte uno nuevo. SOMOS RICOS!! Viva el consumo y la obsolescencia programada

4.- La diferenciación de uso doméstico a profesional. Tonterías el ordenador si tiene una tarjeta gráfica potente o no potente, las soldaduras debe de poder soportar el calor y si no lo hace está mal el diseño. Un uso doméstico con vídeo juegos utiliza más procesador y tarjeta gráfica(GPU) que un uso profesional con Photoshop.

5.- La madre de todas las madres los soportes y mantenimientos, aquí esta el verdadero negocio, haces ver a los clientes tu buen soporte técnico, la necesidad de seguros y lo que antes debería ser una obligación que un aparato dure 4 años, ahora vendes como una valor añadido de la calidad de la empresa.

MIERDA ESTAMOS LOCOS O QUE, FABRICA PARA DURAR

Me llamo Israel Diaz y trabajo en gráficos más de 20 años, entendemos por gráficos a softwares de 3d como Maya, Softimage, grabación y montaje profesional de videos en Premiere, Avid, etalonado o color grading con Davinci, programación con Pyhton, Mel, lingo, actionscript, javascript y web con html5, joomla… en diferentes sistemas operativos desde mac, pc, incluso maquinas más sofisticadas con sistemas en unix como son las antiguas silicon graphics.

Para todo esto siempre he requerido de un ordenador, unas veces los he comprado montado, otras veces me los he montado yo mismo. Mi primer ordenador en serio lo tuve con 14 años y de eso hace 26 años. No soy bloguero, ni escritor por lo que me disculpáis si el artículo no está todo lo perfecto que debería.

CONCLUSION: NO ME COMPRARÉ UN DELL , NO ME FIO Y NO TIENEN UN SERVICIO DE POST VENTA PARA MI REAL MÁS QUE UNA LINEA ASEGURADORA, NO TIENEN VERGÜENZA DE PLANTEAR UN PRESUPUESTO 427€ DE UN ORDENADOR QUE VALÍA 839€ Y NOSOTROS COMO SIEMPRE PAGAMOS. NO TIENEN VERGÜENZA EN VENDERTE UN MANTENIMIENTO ANUAL DE ALGO QUE DEBERÍA DURAR POR ESTAR BIEN FABRICADO.

CUANDO UNA MARCA RECURRE A DECIR EL USO INDEBIDO DE UN PRODUCTO, ES POR QUE FALLA MÁS DE LO QUE DEBE. IMAGINA QUE SE TE ROMPIERA UN COCHE POR SUBIR DE 160 km/h Y TE DIJERAN, TE CUESTA 9.000 euros LA REPARACIÓN haber COGIDO EL PLAN PROTECT QUE EN 4000€ TE PROTEGE DURANTE 5 AÑOS, ESE COCHE ESTÁ PENSADO PARA IR A 120 km/h COMO MARCA LA LEY AUNQUE EN EL CUENTAKILÓMETROS MARCA 240 km/h. CONCLUYERAN ESE COCHE ESTÁ PENSADO PARA CONDUCCIONES TRANQUILAS.

DELL INSPIRION FALLA 2 VECES EN 2 AÑOS Y MEDIO

El 6 de Agosto del 2013 compré un DELL inspirion 17r de refurbished, seminuevo y reparado por la propia DELL con un valor de 837€ + aduana e iva, estaba fabricado en Enero de ese mismo año.

Uno siempre piensa que cuando le ponen una pegatina para tranquilidad del usuario asegurando que la reparación deja el ordenador en un estado nuevo sería verdad y confías en la marca. Mi sorpresa es 2 años y 3 meses después cuando se estropea otra vez de manera fatal con 8 pitidos.

Lo primero que te dice DELL es que para saber lo que le pasa hay que pagar 165 euros, que serán descontados del presupuesto final y si no se acepta se pierde. Después de mucho quejarte, pero mucho, hacen el presupuesto de manera mental 8 pitidos son 550€, bueno como te estas quejando lo dejamos en 427€ y no te cobramos mano de obra de la reparación.

Logicamente este precio es abusivo, no pretenden que repares el portatil e incluso ellos saben que no compensa, dejo fragmento de texto de la propia DELL

"Podría ser más recomendable para usted adquirir un producto nuevo y visto que podría ser usado para la edición de video, nosotros le recomendamos la gama Precision y no reparar este producto que fue diseñado para un uso doméstico y no profesional ya descatalogado."

¿ Que DELL no habrá vuelto a las andadas? como cuando colocó 11.8 millones de ordenadores que sabían que se romperían en los próximos 3 años.

Mi contestación a DELL es clara mi ordenador sigue valiendo aunque sea para tapa de bater, disfruta de ergonomía y se presupone que podrá amortizarse su valor. Tal vez DELL deba plantearse en vender otro tipo de productos mas cerca del bañó que del escritorio.

Cada semana intentaremos hacer llegar diferentes formas de amortizar esta cantidad indecente de ordenadores que no han durado los 4 años que debieran como mínimo y que dejan a los usuarios fuera de juego.

El lobo acecha en los gráficos a tiempo real

Vizrt, Orad Hi-Tec Systems y Brainstorm Multimedia no ven el peligro que corren a manos de Ross Video su nuevo lobo que está al acecho .

Las historias siempre se repiten, diferentes empresas, mismos patrones. Me recuerda cuando AMD medio arruinada por la compra de Ati en el 2008, empezó a sacar los dientes a NVIDIA, con sus apus, gpus mas baratas, mas frias, tecnologicamente superiores 6 meses y al final está por encima de ella , quitandole el mercado de Apple , las consolas xbox y playstation.

Vizrt,Orad,Brainstorm Ya pueden estudiar sus productos y hacerlos más operativos, tienen productos realizados por programadores, que desoyen a los creadores de contenidos ó en su caso abrir unas lineas desde 0 sin vicios, softwares más agiles, más actualizados.

Voy a poner otro ejemplo el gran éxito de Blackmagic Design con Davinci un software que hay que quitarse el sombrero "OLÉ".

Blackmagic Design va hacer daño a Avid Technology y Adobe desde su posición de empresa de hardware-software, donde el software es un complemento y donde participaron todos en su creación.

Su software es muchísimo más manejable, intuitivo y eficaz, ha sido desarrollado de manera conjunta por grandes estudios del mundo (editores de video || post producción),es buen merchandising aunque en realidad es verdad, cuando lo pruebas alucinas.

Si Davinci consigue mejorar la edición de video , con el precio que tiene, que incluso lo regalan comprando una Blackmagic cinema 2.5k, el daño para Avid - Adobe será bestial .

En conclusión si Ross Video sigue generando una plataforma, que tiene el aplauso de los operadores y grafistas, como si fuera parte de ellos, un producto fresco,un interface mas acorde a los tiempos, el éxito está asegurado.

Volviendo al tiempo real, rotulacion, realidad aumentada, virtualsets... Vamos a ver.

Vizrt peca de ser demasiado modular, donde hay que rascarse el bolsillo y han subdividido en cajitas lo que debería ser una,tiene por el contrario una gran imagen de empresa, tal vez en marketting los numero 1, cualquiera que este en este mundillo, sabrá reconocer que los noruegos han realizado un explendido trabajo.

Brainstorm Multimedia pese a que creen que es una aplicación amigable, no lo es, los programadores no pueden desplegar empatia suficiente, ponerse en la piel de grafistas, montadores, diseñadores aunque crean que si.Esto se resume,en millones de opciones que nunca se utilizan y un interface anticuado. Brainstorm tampoco da prioridad a la identidad e imagen de la empresa, hasta hace bien poco tenían una web del quaternario, no generan video tutoriales, no disponen de un canal de youtube, ni se mueven casi en las redes o foros. Los recursos son limitados.. Todo esto es su talón de aquiles, pese a que el software sea el más polivalente y tal vez mejor tecnicamente, no priorizan en cosas que son casi mas importante, que ser buenos.

Orad Hi-Tec Systems demasiado grande para caer, como si se tratara de un banco, pero que no se descuide.Por que sus gastos se los pueden comer vivos, para mi ese es su punto flojo,las dimensiones de la empresa.No pueden luchar en precio por que se los comerían, aunque nadie discute su situación de supremacía con vizrt (no se cual está mas insertada, las dos mucho).

Nvidia said a year ago it would use property it owns across the street from its current headquarters in Santa Clara, California, to construct one, and eventually two, eco-friendly buildings in the shape of triangles. Apple fanboys woke up this morning to the news that Macbooks were cheaper than Windows machines.After years of having to invent excuses as to why their machines were price inflated, the fanboys were told by Future Looks that Apple was building the machines at less than cost and was clearly doing it for love.Futurelooks editor Stephen Fung sat down and added up the cost of all the components in the a nearly top-of-the-line Mac Pro on Apple s website. He ended up with a machine that included 64GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, two AMD D700 graphics cards and a 2.7GHz 12-core Intel Xeon processor to work out how much it would cost if it were a windows machine. The Macbook Pro is nearly $10,000.Fung thought that there was nothing remarkable about this list of parts; it s the way that they are integrated that provides both pros and cons.The Apple machine was in a cylinder that is less than 10 inches tall and under 7 inches wide, with the power supply inside. Of course this means that it is easy to take it on site or pack with you. So if you are in need of more power, it doesn t come with the traditional drawbacks of a large tower like the original Mac Pros.Fung pointed out that you would never be able to upgrade the chip because Apple soldered the lot together.Thinking that the only real difference was price, Fung looked at all the prices of the bits and came up with a figure that was lower than a compariable Windows machine. After tabulating all the major component costs (plus another $99.99 US for Windows 8 Pro), we are at a total of around $11,530.54 US using today s prices at retailers that actually stock the hardware, he wrote. I m not afraid to admit that compared to the asking price of $9,599 US, the new Mac Pro seems like one heckuva deal for these components. He did not even factor in the cost of building the machine once you have the parts.Fung checked the entry-level version of the Mac Pro. Fung s match to Apple s $2,999 Mac Pro ended up costing $3,994.65 in parts, a whopping 33 percent more expensive than the Mac Pro.The story that Apple machines are actually cheaper than VoleWare has been cut and pasted all over the internet by machines and Apple fanboys.The only problem with the story is that it is not quite, but almost total bollocks.Fung built his imaginary PCs using the retail cost of parts from a catalogue. These prices have a huge mark-up which when factored into a build of a machine would inflate the price exponentially.What is also funny is that his tear down seems to have angered PC and Apple fanboys who noticed that he could not actually buy the comparable spec off the shelf in any case.In short he did not compare like with like. This has not stopped the story going viral as fanboys everywhere tried to justify their Christmas presents to themselves.

In short, a dark web message in the light of day.What this means is that in 2014 we wills start to see the rise of the erasable internet.It would effectively be a more private network, one without the constant worry of every ill-considered picture turning up to haunt your job interviews.It might be less useful and would be impractical as a method to store old photos or data. However, in time other less legally friendly and secure apps will appear.While the rest of the industry is spouting about how important mass storage on the cloud is, it would appear that there is a new market in getting data off the net.How will this kill Google? At the moment the search engine depends on snuffling as much data as it can on users to serve them up adverts. If people are sending messages using systems which cannot be snuffled, then Google loses a lot of its magic ability. True, it still will be able to search traditional web pages, but it will lose the personal edge of knowing everything about you.With the pressure towards no tracking and other privacy moves Google is on a back foot fighting a trend away from data collection and into data privacy.It would appear that next year will be the beginning of a war between big data and secret data and our guess is that Google will be the loser.

Avenir Next is the most readable and sober of the sans serif font families that are pre-installed with Apples latest operating system for iPad and iPhone, and has rapidly become the typeface of choice for apps, mobile-ready websites, and graphic design in general.2013 was Akira Kobayashis year.Kunihiko Okanos slow firestormKunihiko Okano is perhaps Japans best type designer. This is not hyperbole. His five layer script typeface, Quintet, was released through Photolettering Inc last year, and is a masterful paean to his studies in calligraphy and type design. You can see it explained here. He put together a Japanese typeface called Waran which got a small showing in an issue of Slanted Magazine, but things have been really quiet otherwise. That means only that 2014 is going to be a brutal show of force from this typographic powerhouse.TypecacheWhen theyre not busy organizing the most innovative typographic events in Tokyo, Taro Yumiba and Akira Yoshino run Typecache, an internationally-focused website that highlights the best and brightest type designs from around the world. Broken down by both genre and release, Typecache is one of the most critical and comprehensive type categorization sites in the world. Its kind of amazing that these guys have the energy Yumiba and Yoshino are the kind of one-two knockout punch of writer/editor and designer/developer team that keeps them both more than gainfully employed, so that they have the time on top of the energy speaks heaps.Yoshihisa Shirai joined Musashino Art UniversityYoshihisa Shirai is perhaps Japans best typographer. Hes been art directing and designing Idea Magazine since 2005, a large chunk of Robundos printed materials, and generally running an extremely busy graphic design studio for 20+ years. Hes published books on typographic ornament, contributed greatly to the recent Jan Tschichold exhibition at Ginza Graphic Gallery, and has a slim monograph out focusing on his own graphic output culled from a 2011 exhibition titled Typographic Suite.His professional path took a divergent turn at the end of 2012 when he joined Musashino Art Universitys Graphic Design program teaching Typography, Design Theory, and general Graphic Design courses. The payoff: If you want to learn graphic design and typography in a really strong graphic design, Musabi just made their program that much stronger by bringing Shirai-san on board.The acceleration of typography and type design as a quantified concept culturallyTen years ago, the first time you met someone on the street and you said you were a type designer, theyd just kind of give you a blank stare and a nod of acknowledgement. Now, everyones got an opinion about typography or type design. Folks can tell you why they prefer Helvetica over Futura or Ryumin Pro over MS Mincho.Popular culture the world over is becoming more and more design-conscious. This is both a good and a bad thing. Chimpzilla s Radeon R9 290 and 290X review copies appear to be performing better than retail versions.Techreport penned a review which said that AMD upended the high-end graphics market by offering performance competitive with Nvidia s existing products at substantially lower prices. The R9 290X captured the overall GPU performance crown, wresting it away from the GeForce GTX 780 and Titan.However, some of its readers said that Radeon R9 290X cards bought at retail do not seem to perform as well as the review units AMD supplied to the press.The retail R9 290-series cards had the same basic hardware and specifications as the review samples, but at least some retail R9 290-series cards seemed to operate at lower clock speeds.Techreport got on the blower to AMD which investigated and found that the fans on some retail cards were not spinning as fast as expected, and the reduced cooling capacity resulted in lower clock speeds.It issued a fix in the form of a software update. The Catalyst 13.11 beta 9v2 driver sought to equalize blower speeds from card to card by monitoring RPM directly, thus hopefully improving performance on retail cards that seemed to lag behind.Techreport wanted to test a retail card but could not afford it, until Nvidia offered to buy a couple of retail R9 290X cards for them to test. Nvidia did not touch the cards which were shipped from New Egg. It looked like Nvidia were happy to foot the bill because it was fairly sure that AMD would look very bad.It tested two Radeon R9 290X cards: one from HIS and the other from Sapphire. Apart from the stickers on the cooling shrouds, the two look to be identical and to the two R9 290X review samples.The testing showed that AMD s software fix to equalize blower speeds in the Catalyst 13.11 beta 9v2 driver release definitely improves the worst of the low-clock-speed problems. The fix appears to raise fan speeds overall for 290X cards, slightly for our initial review unit and more dramatically for our HIS retail card.However the initial R9 290X review unit was superior to the two retail cards tested. Even with the blower speed fix working the first review unit runs at 5-10 per cent higher clock speeds than the retail cards, depending on the workload. That deficit translates into a 5-10 per cent advantage in frame rates, though usually toward the lower end of that range at 4K resolutions and lower voltage.The initial review was skewed so that the Radeon R9 290X so that the card s performance was better than it should be and it was quieter.It thinks that AMD chose to include some of its very best Hawaii GPUs aboard the review samples it supplied to the press.

AMD talks about its cloud plans

AMD chief executive Rory Read has been chatting to the Washington Post over tea and sticky buns about his cunning plan to branch out into cloud services and reduce his outfits dependence on PC chip making.He said that when data was stored on local servers, AMD was focused on how to process and display it on one particular device. Now with the cloud, you have to be able to set all of that graphics and display on any device.Traditional PC chips used to constitute the majority of AMDs revenue, but that within two years, he expects about 50 percent of revenue to come from high growth segments involving the cloud.Read said that because cloud-based services allow consumers to access them from any device, AMD must change how it sees chips.Since 2011, Read has been carrying out a plan to reset and restructure the company to meet new technology goals, mainly through a 10 percent workforce reduction and terminating contractual commitments.So far this has involved cost cutting like a mad thing by selling and leasing-back its campus in Austin, Tex. in March, freeing up about $164 million in cash.Read said that the next part of the cunning plan was to create reusable blocks of intellectual property, which will help it execute a turn through a launch of new products.He has also been investing in cloud technology outfits such as CiiNow, a cloud-based video game company, through its investment arm AMD Ventures. CiiNow and AMD together allow gamers to stream video games onto any device with high-resolution graphics and speed.But there has also been a move towards government services and away from the consumer market. AMD was selected for an award of $3.1 million for work with a Department of Energy computing research project, which focuses on data transfer.Governments have data on separate, local servers but other agencies cannot easily access them. The moment this data is moved to the cloud, it is possible to access that information from any device, anywhere and at any time.

Hot Hardware has got its paws on leaked slides of AMD s next-generation Kaveri APU.The chip is important to AMD s recovery and will incorporate architectural changes to the Bulldozer CPU AMD launched two years ago and the first chip to use a graphics core derived from AMD s GCN Graphics Core Next architecture.A strong Kaveri launch could give AMD back some momentum in the enthusiast business which is something it has lost lately.The slides indicate that Kaveri s Steamroller CPU core separates some of the core functions that Bulldozer unified. It should improve the chip s front-end execution. It can decode four instructions per core or 16 instructions per quad-core module.The downside is the clockspeed which has slid by 10 per cent. The 10-7850K reportedly has a base clock of 3.7GHz and a maximum Turbo Mode of 4GHz compared to a 4.1GHz base / 4.4GHz Turbo for the A10-6800K.All this might have been done to bring the chip into the desired power range and might explain a few rumours that Kaveri s CPU improvement was pretty pants.The A10-7850K will have a 512 core GPU while the A10-7700K will be 384-core. The GPU clock speeds are down from 844MHz on the A10-6800K to 720MHz on the new A10-7850K.On the plus side the graphics performance should still be 15-20 per cent better thanks to a wider core. The new GPUs will support Mantle and AMD s TrueAudio.The A10-7850K could give AMD a serious improvement over previous chips, though it s not going to close the gap dramatically with Haswell. It would appear that the A10-7850K is a 95W TDP.What is missing from the slide is the news as to whether Kaveri will support the new Crossfire DMA engine that improves the R9 290X and R9 290 s performance in multi-GPU mode. That might make things better but generally it looks like Kaveri could be disappointing.
