And though the latest product is not yet available, we still feel it’s just cool enough to share with you. It’s a schizophrenic smartphone! That’s right; VMware’s Horizon Mobile Solution aims to marry your personal smartphone with your business smartphone – In the same device!. As stated in a recent article, “users would be able to have two phone numbers and two separate data accounts on the same smart phone”. You can switch between your corporate smartphone and your personal smartphone seamlessly. Everything can be managed by your company’s IT department via VMware’s Mobile Management Platform. According to the same article, users will be able to choose any smartphone they desire. By the time the product is released, it should be compatible with any mobile device on any operating system. How awesome is that? Well I guess we’ll find out. No release date was provided as of yet, but you can be sure that we’ll let you know.

According to a Columbia University study, your harmless network printer could become a monster, controlled by hackers through a security vulnerability that involves the printers “Remote Firmware Update” feature. Now you may ask yourself, what could a hacker do with my printer aside from wasting my paper by printing a tray full of offensive material? Well according to this <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57333013-92/could-your-printer-be-a-trojan-horse-researchers-say-yes/?tag=mncol;txt
” >article, they could access previously printed documents, discover other devices on the network and even attempt to start a fire by overheating the printer! Now, before you go sending a torch-wielding mob after your beloved printer, there are a few things you should know. First, a properly configured network firewall will prevent most attacks that originate from outside of your network. Secondly, if your network printer was purchased after 2009, then the vulnerability has, most likely, been plugged. If you believe that your printer is at risk, it might be time to pull the plug, bury the wretched beast out behind the dumpster, and call VirtuWorks. We can provide a detailed security analysis of your network to discover any present security risks and vulnerabilities. Our Managed Services clients enjoy the reassurance that their networks are safe from hackers, viruses, spyware and especially rogue arsonist printers.

If you are the type of business owner that delays improvements to your IT infrastructure until after the holiday tides recede, you may want to re-think. As a recent Cnet Blog post states, “flooding in Thailand has rattled hard-drive makers and their suppliers,” as Thailand is home to a few of the larger hard-drive manufacturers. Hard-drive supply is dwindling at the moment, and given past trends, the remaining supply will be gobbled up quicker than Grandma’s holiday sugar-bomb cupcakes. This will likely set the stage for much longer delays in order fulfillment, and a possible spike in prices for anything containing a hard drive.

The good news is that VirtuWorks’ Cloud customers will avoid much of the effects of this predicament, all together, as it pertains to their critical IT infrastructure. Having migrated their servers, backups and e-mail services to our fortified Cloud system, our clients have relieved themselves of the concerns of owning and maintaining in-house hardware. If you’re not yet one of our Cloud customers, give us a call for a free consultation. I’m sure Grandma will save some cupcakes for you to devour after you get off the phone.

Not to mention that the more people gain trust in online applications and data storage, the more critical those failures and collisions become. That is why David Cheriton and Andreas Bechtolsheim founded Arista Networks. They have committed over $100 Million to the development of devices such as a data-routing switch that can repair problems without shutting down the network. Success in their quest will undoubtedly prove to be an integral step in making working in the Cloud the standard for business IT architecture. It is reassuring to know that along with the stability of offsite solutions such as Virtuworks Cloud Services, someone else is working to make sure the connectivity backbone is prepared for its evolution in the near future.
