Another one I took back during the Shillong trip. This flower is there just about in any mountainous region in North East India. I used to see a lot of these in Sikkim when I was a kid. Never quite caught up on the name though.

I had a trip to Mandarmani a few days back. I mostly went for the photography. It's my first seaside project and I hope you all like this and the next few upcoming shots from that time.

And as a side note, since all these are extensively post processed, I decided to not include the exposure. Maybe when I get myself an SLR and have manual control over it, I'll start putting it along again.

Hi to all those who have been reading this blog. I'm Akshay and this would be my first post on Visioplanet. Sudipto invited me to post here once and I thought that'd be pretty cool...

I took this photograph after we had a campfire on Jay's roof with Nurvs of Steel. The fire had burned all the wood and all there was left was this red glow of burnt wood waiting to become ash.

Another capture from the Cherrapunji trip. This was taken somewhere during the afternoon. It's pretty cool seeing the plains from the top of mountains. The vast land down there is Bangladesh. So if one runs down the hills (considering one could/would), he'd practically be in a different country. One can actually see the horizon melting away to a point where it's not really clear if it's the clouds or land.

I took this one during my trip to Cherrapunji. Don't really know what this place is. But it's somewhere on the road between Shillong and Cherrapunji. It was particularly early in the morning. I remember because the bus was supposed to leave at 8:00. Had to wake up at about 6. Good thing the bus took a stop on the road and I had the camera in my hand. Don't really know the exact time this was taken as the clock on the camera was not set to the right time, and I hadn't noticed (It's the same with all pictures I took during the trip). I remember the dates from memory (and the calendar). The soil on the right was a bit brown and the grass at the lower left was a little green, but I decided to desaturate it. It looked better in black and white (B&W intrigues me in its own unique way).

And so I was in Shillong, a place I had long wanted to go to. And there I was with my BFF on top of the mountain, the Shillong Peak, the topmost point of the city (6,449 feet (1,966 m) above sea level). And as it is with him, he often finds himself thinking (he's quite the "philosopher").

"Hey, wassup man? What are you thinking?", I ask.
"Nothing."
"Okay, go back to thinking. Will make for a good portrait.. :)"

This is probably the first photograph I have extensively used GIMP with, and seeing the results, I will probably use it for post processing for a long time to come. Leave your comments to lemme know what you "thought" of it. :)

Rain in Cherrapunji

I had long heard of how Cherrapunji had the largest rainfall in the world. For those that were not aware of that fact, Cherrapunji is a place in the state of Meghalaya, India. Its original name is Sohra. Cherrapunji was the name given to it by the British (before independence). It's famous for its Scottish highlands like landscape and of course - rain. But that is not all it is famous for.

Lately, I had the chance to visit the place. The place where I took this photograph is where the famous Mawkdok valley. The bad news, it was all covered in clouds. Apparently, the clouds were stuck in the valley with no open space to spread apart. The good news, there were rain drops hanging from the railing of the stairway that led to the viewpoint. I did some more shots of the local flora, not enough though. One can never get enough of that place.

It's wonderful how sometimes small and seemingly insignificant things remind one of things that are important (to him). I saw these bunch of ground nuts drying under the sun during my stay at my uncle's. The quiet surroundings had me doing nothing other than photographing small beautiful things. I don't really recall how this made me do a macro, but it did turn out to be appealing to me.

For those who have been actively following me, sorry for the delay. I was quite busy the last couple of months, getting a new job and shifting to a new place. But now that I got my Internet, I'll get back to posting more regularly. And there's one more bad news - I do not anymore have a camera at my disposal and therefore the next photographs might not date during this time. But do keep following because I have nearly a hundred photographs lying around that I haven't posted yet.

Golden dartlet - Ischnura Aurora

This is one of the several damselflies I photographed during my stay at my uncle's a few months ago. It's a male Golden dartlet, scientific name - Ischnura Aurora (although it will probably change soon) as documented on the wikipedia page. It really was a pain digging up the name from the Internet. For documentation purposes, I've licensed in under the creative commons attribution share alike 3.0 license. It is also available in Wikimedia commons. This damselfly is found mostly along ponds, which was the case in the backyard. One thing I will say again as I said in the dragon knight, is that these are really hard to shoot. They DO NOT like to sit still.

I was trying my hand at portrait photography, which I seldom do when I took this. My bro was sitting in front of the computer playing one of the several games he plays all the time. Looking at the bright window behind him and all the light coming in through the drapes, I thought it would be a good idea to go for an over-exposure. I had to ask him to sit still for five long seconds though. I had a really hard time not to shake my hand at all during that time. Obviously it took more than one shot to get this and some playing with the long shutter mode to realize that 15 sec was too much and 4 sec was too less.

This is the first picture (possibly the only one I'll upload here) I took after I got to Kolkata for an exam. The hydrogen lamp white balance is a good thing and I'd been trying to use it for quite some time. But this was probably the right moment. The contrast between the well lit and the not so well lit areas came up beautifully. The only drawback - the camera's not an SLR and with the low light intensity, the shutter speed went to as long as a second which turned the man walking in the middle to a blur.

It is all about the colors as I recall saying to myself at that time. I don't really remember what inspired me into that though.

So my father's office had a new year's picnic in a golf course in Agartala on 8th. I, as was expected didn't have any friends and it was quite boring. So I kept clicking just about everything down there and this is one of the few which came good enough. There is no snow (It doesn't snow here). But it was dry and cold. And although the day started out with a thick mist reducing every view to a haze, the evening had beautiful clouds up in the sky.

Another landscape from the village tour I took a couple of months ago. There's a pond and the small moon in the deep blue sky. I had to go quite far in the interiors to take this one though. And so was the case for Infinite fields.

And although I've been posting a lot from that time and haven't posted much in the last two months, it's mostly because I haven't been photographing recently, but I started again and more photos will be coming up from recent events.

There are fields. Infinite fields. For a long time I wouldn't believe, until I saw them with me own eyes.
Reminds me of Morpheus from when he was showing the fields to Neo. Fortunately enough, it's not that kind of fields. But then again, how do we that tasty wheat tastes like tasty wheat? May be we got it all wrong. May be what we think tasty wheat tastes like, tastes like tuna fish or rice.

This little one was sitting between two railway tracks in the railway station during my tour to the place. To my surprise, there were quite a few butterflies there. I did take a few photographs, but this is the best I could get. The thunder-like must leave impressions on them, as is visible on this one. But again, beauty does not mean perfection.

There's a lot of dragon flies over there in the village. You look for one and you'd find at least 10 of them flying around in a radius of 10 metres. The bad thing about these is that they won't sit still for even a couple of seconds. One sure needs a hell lot of patience photographing them. Especially when one does not have a ultra cool camera with a reasonably high zoom. This one was hardly an inch long.

The broader view of the backyard of my uncle's house. So, what's so special about it? It just looks like a house in a jungle. It used to be a cowshed, at least as long as they had cows. Now it just stands there in the middle of a hoard of trees and plants and a variety of insects roaming around.

One of the several plants in the backyard of my uncle's house. The place used to be a cowshed, but now is just a backyard full of trees and grass. This small one was amongst the grasses, smaller than them, but standing proud still. Never really get to know what plant it was, but the people there call it "a kind of grass flower".
