Anthelios is a line of sunscreens from La Roche-Posay.  In addition to common sunscreen ingredients that do a great job at blocking UVB rays, the key ingredients that makes certain Anthelios sunscreens the best sunscreens are Mexoryl SX, Mexoryl XL and Tinosorb S known combined as Mexoplex.  Mexoryl SX and XL are patented ingredients that blocks UVA rays over a long period of time.  UVB rays cause the burning of the skin and damage but UVA rays don’t burn the skin but penetrate more deeply into the skin and cause unseen damage, read more here.

Unfortunately there is a wide variety of Anthelios sunscreen products on the market but only a few contain the key ingredients Mexoryl SX, Mexoryl XL and Tinosorb S.  Look for Anthelios products that contain all of the following ingredients:

Drometrizole trisiloxane (also known as Mexoryl XL)

terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid (also known as ecamsule or Mexoryl SX)

bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (also known as Bemotrizinol, Tinosorb S or Escalol S)

Internationally, there are a wide range of Anthelios products (listed here) that contain all three ingredients above, just be sure to check the ingredients list.  Many of these products can be found on Amazon.com or Pharmamundi.com, just be sure to double check the ingredients.

Unfortunately in US stores, the only two products that contain Mexoryl are Anthelios SX and Anthelios 40 found here but they only contain Mexoryl SX.   I recommend finding the internationally available products listed here.

It’s easy to get a the driving distance between two places, for instance between San Diego, CA and Santa Barbara, CA

However, what is you wanted to know the distance between the two places as the bird flies, luckily there is a tool in Google Maps Labs called the Distance Measurement Tool that will show you the distance in miles or kilometers between any two points on a map.

First login to your google account:

Then look in the upper right corner for the gear icon and click it then click the Maps Labs option:

You should see the following Labs Menu, click to Enable the Distance Measurement Tool:

Click Save Changes

Now you should see a new “ruler” icon in the lower left corner of the map.  Click this and the Distance Measurement Tool will show up.  Then click any where on the map you want to start your measurement from.  In this case I clicked San Diego, but note you do not have to click a city, you can click anywhere on the map.

Next I clicked another point on the map, in this case Santa Barbara and the Distance Measurement Tool showed the straight line distance between the two points, in this case 187 miles.  If you click another point on the map it will add that distance and give you the total.

Problem:

Some of the controls for Pandora do not work in PandoraJam, for example selecting from a list when creating a new station:

However, when trying to click one of the items from the list, it does not work. If the whole name of the artist/song is typed in, then the right arrow can be clicked and it will work, however there is an easier way:

Luckily, PandoraJam offers a way to switch to web mode to view Pandora in a more direct way.

Use the Expand Window and Shrink Window

1. Click the green plus button in upper left corner of the PandoraJam window:

2. You should see a dialog box:

Pandora.com will reload in a window you can resize, allowing you to fill out forms, click on pop-ups and banners.  The enhanced features of PandoraJam may not be fully operational at this time, so when you are finished, click this button again to return to the normal PandoraJam mode.

3. Click OK, all Pandora controls should work now

4.When you are done, click the green button again and go back to the regular PandoraJam view so that all the features of PandoraJam will work correctly:

You should see this dialog:

The window will reload and the enhanced features of PandoraJam should be operational.

Click OK and PandoraJam will reload.

I get the following error when syncing my iPhone 3GS to itunes:

“Some of the Audible files in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPhone “iphone” because you are no authorized to play them on this computer.”

I tried to deauthorize my account:

Once this is done, click on Books in the left sidebar menu:

Click play on one of the books:

You’ll get a warning message:

Enter your Audible username and password, then click okay.  The book will start playing and you will now be able to sync your iphone/ipod/ipad without getting the error message.

So I contacted Audible on 4/27/2011 and am awaiting their response.

It’s 5/2/2011 and there has been no response from Audible, however I came across a fix to the problem described above by chance and it worked.

This is the system I use to listen to music and get new suggestions.  I love Pandora and iTunes, but they don’t talk to each other.  Last.fm solves this problem through Scrobbling so you can have a central place to see all your listening habits and favorites plus discover new music at Last.fm by listening to songs on iTunes and Pandora.  The setup I use is PandoraJam to listen and record songs from Pandora and put them into my iTunes Library and also scrobble them to Last.fm and also when I listen to music through iTunes the Last.fm scrobbler app scrobbles them to my Last.fm account.  Then I discover new music through Last.fm and music saved to iTunes so I can buy the albums and songs that I like.

This records everything you listen to, adds/copies the file to your iTunes Library (in the correct folders), then deletes (Move to trash option) the original file so you don’t have the extra copy left over and adds it to a playlist in iTunes so you can easily find the song and rate it if you want to:

The songs should be automatically added to your iTunes Library in the correct Artist/Album folders, but if not, just consolidate the files:

First thing was that I was getting this error when I tried to use Google Analyticator for WordPress and tried to link it with my account get an error:

The page you have requested cannot be displayed. Another site was requesting access to your Google Account, but sent a malformed request. Please contact the site that you were trying to use when you received this message to inform them of the error. A detailed error message follows:

The site “http://mycoolwebsite.com” has not been registered.”

I found this post and this post about the problem and needed to register the domain with my Google Account, in this case my Google Apps Google Account.

So I went to:

Then 1. put in my site, mycoolwebsite.com and 2. clicked Add:

I read this and this and found the problem was that the next variable had a leading www. by the Target URL path prefix from above did not, here is the URL from the request:

You’ll notice the leading www. once this was added to the Target URL path prefix (described above):

Importing CD to iTunes using Apple Lossless Encoder to archive your music collection and converting to mp3, AAC to play on an iPod, iTouch, iPad, iPhone or other mobile device

This tutorial will show you how to import a CD into iTunes using the Apple Lossless Encoder, store those files to an archive of your music then convert it to a format (AAC, MP3 or other) to keep in your iTunes library that will be smaller and easily able to sync with your iPod, iTouch, iPad, iPhone or other mobile device.  The problem is you want to archive your CD collection but don’t want to lose original quality by converting the CD to a format like AAC, MP3.  The solution is to create an Apple Lossless Encoded version of the files and store them in a music archive, then convert the CD to a format like AAC, MP3 or other and keep those in your iTunes library.  The following steps will show you how to do this:

Open iTunes

Put the CD into your computer.

You should see a popup notification window asking “Would you like to import the CD into your iTunes library?”:

Click Yes, but if you do not see this window, navigate to the Devices section of the left column in iTunes and click on the CD you want to import:

Next you should see a list of the songs on the CD, look to the lower right corner of the screen and click the Import Settings button:

From the Import Using dropdown menu, click the Apple Lossless Encoder:

Click the OK button.

Next click the Import CD button in the lower right of the screen:

Once the CD has finished importing select to one of the songs on the CD by clicking Music in the left hand column and then going to the album, the right click one of the songs:

From the Finder Window, select all the songs, right click and then select copy.

Now Navigate to where you keep or want to keep your CD archive, in my case I keep it on an external hard drive in a folder named Music CD Archive, then create a new Folder in that Folder by right click in the finder window and select new folder:

Rename the folder by clicking it once to highlight it and then clicking it once again:

Open the newly created folder and right click anywhere inside the finder window and select Paste Items:

Once the files have finished copying, go back to iTunes and select preferences from the iTunes drop down menu in the far upper left corner of your screen:

Click the import settings button:



Then select the desired format that you want for keeping your files in iTunes (this is a personal preference and there is debate about which is the best format, but in my case I use .mp3 @ 192 kbps):

Once the format is selected click the OK button:

Now navigate to the songs from the CD you imported, select all the songs, right click and then select Create MP3 (or whatever format you chose from the step above) Version:

Once this process completes, there will be an alternating list of the the songs with Lossless Encoded songs highlighted and the newly converted songs not highlighted, now right click on one of the highlighted songs and select Delete (this will delete the Apple Lossless Encoded songs while preserving the songs in the newly create format, but don’t worry the Apple Lossless Encoded songs are safely stored in your music archive from the steps earlier)

You should see a popup window notification asking if you Are sure you want to remove the selected songs from your iTunes library?, click the remove button:



Next you will see a popup window asking Do you want to move the selected songs to the Trash, or keep them in the iTunes Media folder?  Click the Move to Trash button (again don’t worry, this only moving the Apple Lossless Encoded songs to the trash while preserving the songs in the newly create format, the Apple Lossless Encoded songs are safely stored in your music archive from the steps earlier)

And that’s it, now you have the CD stored in an archive and a smaller version in your iTunes library to easily sync with your iPod, iTouch, iPad, iPhone or other mobile device without taking up too much space.  And you have the peace of mind of knowing you have the CD safely stored in Apple Lossless Encoding format so you can go back at anytime and use the CD in the archive to burn copies or convert to other formats.

This shows an easy way to convert a file in itunes to mp3 format so it can be used in programs like Audacity (usually in the format of AAC or m4a, but it should work for any file that is in iTunes, in this case on a mac)

Open iTunes and locate the m4a or aac file in iTunes on your mac.

Open the iTunes Preferences:

In the General Tab look for the Import Settings Button:

Click the import settings button and then select Import using MP3 from the drop down menu:

Click OK and then go to the AAC or m4A audio file or song you want to convert.  Right click it and you should see the option to create an MP3 version:

Now you should have two copies of the same song/file with the same name but one will be in aac/m4a format and the other will be in mp3:

You can verify that the new file is in mp3 format by right clicking it and selecting Get Info:

Now you can also right click this file/song and select show in finder, then drag and drop this file into another audio program such as Audacity for editing.  That’s all there is to it to convert an existing file/song in aac/m4a format in itunes on a mac to an mp3 file.

How to set the default program for a file type and change the file associations in Mac OS X

1. Right click the file you want to change the associations/default program for

2. Click “Get Info”

3. Click the dropdown for the “Open With” section

4. Select the program you want to be associated with this file type, this will be the default program, if you don’t see it in the list select other and file the application in the applications folder.

5. Click “Change All” so that all files with this extension/type will open with this program.

After reading this I easily changed the default program that a file would open with in mac os x.  Basically, this is what happens when a file is double clicked, there is a default program that is associated with that type or file or file extension.  I found it annoying that files like a jpeg or .csv would open with Photoshop or Numbers when I wanted them to open with Preview or Exel.

The basics to change this are to right click the file, select get info, then click the drop down for Open With, then select the program you want this file to open with by default, then click the change all button.  Then you are done.
