It’s easy to tap into BA’s surging literary vibe: mainly because it’s so cheap to while away hours in the elegant cafes where the city’s best writers hung (and still hang) out. The San Telmo and Palermo coffeehouses are ideal for espresso-sipping with the artsy in-crowd today whilst the city centre’s glam Café Tortoni was formerly frequented by famed Argentinean author Jorge Luis Borges. Borges’ house lies in Recoleta; his fictional El Aleph, the spot encompassing all other points in the universe, is supposedly located on San Telmo’s Juan de Garay St. Finish your literary tour at Palermo’s Garden of the Poets, bursting with writerly busts from Borges to Dante.
With a passionate Latin American temperament and deep-seated love affair with tango, few cities in the world are as sexy as Buenos Aires. This is a place where hearts are worn on sleeves, be it in late-night Milongas - exuberantly flirtatious neighbourhood dance parties - or amid the tinderbox atmosphere of Argentina’s biggest soccer match, when Boca Juniors meet city rivals Independiente. And if dancing and sport don’t fire your furnace, BA drips with chic fashion, atmospheric old bars and a buzzing club scene.
It’s an elegant, seductive place with a ragged edge, laced with old-world languor and yet full of contemporary attitude. BA is somehow strangely familiar, but unlike any other city in the world. Read more

The world’s greatest bookshops

Librería El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires, Argentina

It’s grand, it’s splendid, it’s a strong contender to be the world’s most beautiful bookshop. Occupying a 1920s theatre in downtown Buenos Aires, El Ateneo has kept the sumptuous auditorium’s original furnishings – and added books. Beneath the painted ceiling, shelves have been built into the spectator balconies. When you’ve finished gawping at the ornate carvings and it’s time to put finger to page, the former theatre boxes are now intimate reading rooms. There’s a cafe on the stage, between red velvet curtains, and the final firework in the literary spectacle is the round-the-clock opening hours.
Librería El Ateneo Grand Splendid is located on the south side of Ave Santa Fe, 50m west of Ave Callao.

With its sexy national dance, world-renowned wine, beef, leather and gorgeous porteños, Buenos Aires has become a crucial stop for savvy LGBT travelers. Add to that the first legal same-sex marriages in Latin America, and get ready to tango to this hemisphere’s new “it” destination. Once rich (in the early 1900s, the country was ranked among the top 10 most powerful nations on Earth), Argentina has slipped behind many other developing nations. Still, Buenos Aires boasts an architect’s dreamscape of European-style building, some of which are being lovingly refurbished, as well as several up-and-coming LGBT-popular neighborhoods with names seemingly tailor-made for gay travelers, like the following three in Palermo: Hollywood, Soho and Queens.

Despite its European connections, Buenos Aires has a flavor all its own. Street performers doing the tango are as much a part of the landscape as famous buildings like the opulent, French-designed Teatro Colon. Local culture is celebrated in the weekly Mataderos Fair, featuring regional food, crafts and horse races.

The city's dozens of neighborhoods, each its own personality, offer museums, restaurants, shopping, history, dancing and outdoor activities to suit any taste or budget.

Gay tourism to Argentina seen booming

Argentina is set to see an increase in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) tourists who accounted for 17.8 percent of visitors in 2008, thanks to the same-sex marriage bill that President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner signed into law yesterday evening.
Justin Nelson and Chance Mitchell, respectively president and chief executive as well as co-founders of the US National Gay/Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), said the day-old law will encourage even more LGBT tourism to a country that is already considered gay-friendly.

Mitchell said: “Argentina is a very important country for our chamber, especially with everything that has occurred in the past week and it is setting the stage for freedom and equality around the world.
Nelson added: “The US and Argentina are one of each other’s largest trading partners so being here (at this conference) is vitally important in maintaining that.”
