Statue of Iracema

Iracema is the main character of a novel with the same name written by Brazilian writer José de Alencar. The novel tells the story of Iracema and Martim Soares Moreno; Moreno was one of the first Portuguese to come to explore Fortaleza (read History of Ceará), and Iracema would be his wife.

Iracema became so associated with Fortaleza (hence the name of Iracema beach) that a few statues of her were built and are exhibited in the city. This one was sculpted in concrete by Corbiniano Lins, and displays Iracema, Martim Afonso, their son and their dog, sitting on a jangada.
The artist preferred a modernist approach, which resulted in some corporal distortions, like disproportional thick legs and large breasts. Despite some criticisms, this Iracema has been in exposition since 1965, and was for a long time the most famous landmark of Fortaleza.

A few years ago, a New Statue of Iracema, made in metal, was put to exhibition in theIracema Beach.

The Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Assunção

This fortress is where the History of Fortaleza started (read more here). The name means Fort of Our Lady of the Rising.

The fort was built by Dutch captain Matias Beck in 1649, and called Fort Schoonenborch. It was reclaimed by the Portuguese in 1654, and the name was changed to Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora de Assunção.

The fortress was refurbished many times, and since 1942 it has been the headquarter of the 10a. Military Region of the Brazilian Army.
The place is open for visitations, but there is very little publicity about this fact. To visit the fortress, approach the soldier who stands guard in front of the main entrance; he will direct you to the main office, and the person in charge will explain briefly what can be seen and will authorize the visit.
Actually, the space open for visitation is limited, because most of the fort is now occupied by the Army.

There is a museum inside the fort, dedicated to General Antonio de Sampaio, who was born in Ceará and became a hero in the War of Paraguay, in the 19th century; the General was buried in the fort, and some of his personal belongings (including uniforms, swords and weapons) are in exhibition.

In the outside yard, visitors can appreciate a view of the sea, like it was in the 17th century; original canons are exposed. There is also a statue of Martins Soares Moreno, another hero of Ceará.

Fortaleza Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza started to be built in 1939, and took nearly 40 years to complete (it was dedicated on December 22nd 1978); the design was by French architect George Mounier.

The church, built in Gothic-Roman style, fits 5,000 people, and is the third largest in Brazil.

Fortaleza is an excellent place to buy handicraft. Very talented artists produce several kinds of handicraft, of astonishing quality, and sell for cheap prices.
The two best places to buy handicraft pieces in Fortaleza are the Central Handicraft Marketnear downtown and this Fair, known as Feirinha de Artesanato, Feirinha da Beira-Mar or Feirinha do Náutico, located by the sea in the Meireles beach.

Fortaleza and other cities in Northeastern Brazilian are known for the production of handicraft.

With a population close to 2.3 million (metropolitan region over 3.4 million), Fortaleza is the 5th largest city in Brazil. It has an area of 313 square kilometres (121 sq mi) and one of the highest demographic densities in the country (8,001 per km²). To the north of the city lies the Atlantic Ocean; to the south are the municipalities of Pacatuba, Eusébio, Maracanaú and Itaitinga; to the east is the municipality of Aquiraz and the Atlantic Ocean; and to the west is the municipality of Caucaia.
