Amazing Maize at the Indiana State Museum

Remember that jingle, “There’s more than corn in Indiana?” That may be true, but right now at the Indiana State Museum, you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about one of Indiana’s marquee products. The Amazing Maize exhibit has brought all things corn and its impact on the State of Indiana to the museum. It’s a fascinating look at the crop that dominates the Indiana landscape every summer.

By taking a stroll through the exhibit, you’ll learn all the ways that corn impacts our daily life. While you may have always known that it has uses beyond feed for livestock and for popping in microwave bags, it’s versatility in everyday life may surprise you.

A highlight for our family’s visit was how interactive it is, especially for kids. There are several tractors that kids can sit on, including a very modern tractor that will give little ones the sense that they’re harvesting a field. You can also pound corn and play tug of war with corn. And adults will learn all about corn’s history and significance.

To get a sense of the exhibit, have some fun with the “Corn God’s” interactive website.

Amazing Maize will be at the Indiana State Museum until January 20, 2013. Admission to this exhibit is included in museum entrance fees ($7 for adults, $4 for children 3-12).

Friday’s Highlights

Habitat For Humanity Super Build 46
(Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center, 725 North Oriental Street)
Now until 2 pm NFL players, Habitat volunteers and Super Build 46 Partners will be working to build the walls of five of the 46 Super Build homes. Comments at 10 am with the following in attendance:

- Mark Miles, Chair, 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee Board
- Dr. Eugene White, Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent

Rebuilding Together’s Kickoff to Rebuild (437 North State Avenue)
Now until Noon, Rebuilding Together Indianapolis will host the 17^th annual NFL Kickoff to Rebuild event which unites hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, members of the NFL community and local leaders to help low-income homeowners and families live in safe and healthy homes. Event will be followed by a 12:30 pm press conference at Arsenal Technical High School Gym (1500 Michigan Avenue).

Rebuilding Together Indianapolis, an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit dedicated to safe and healthy housing, along with primary sponsor Lowe’s, the NFL Player Care Foundation, NFL community members and players, Carter Oosterhouse of HGTV, teams of community volunteers and local businesses, are all investing their time and support to the Near Eastside community.

NFL Alumni Player of the Year Awards Dinner
(Scottish Rite Cathedral, 650 North Meridian Street)
The 30^th Annual Player of the Year Awards Show and dinner will honor today’s most outstanding players by position. Oscar nominee and Emmy-award winner Alec Baldwin will serve as host for the awards ceremony. Award nominees are hand-selected and voted on by retired NFL players. This event will bring together both active and retired players as well as celebrities. Red carpet arrival begins at 5:30 pm; Show starts at 7:45 pm.

Super Bowl Gospel Celebration (Clowes Memorial Hall, 4602 Sunset Boulevard)
In its 13^th year, the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is the only gospel event for Super Bowl weekend. This year it includes the NFL Choir, CeCe Winans as host, Natalie Grant, Donnie McClurkin and Hezekiah Walker. Since its inception, the event has drawn thousands, selling out venues and being named by USA Today as “One of the Best Three Super Bowl Events to Attend.” The event brings the NFL players and top gospel/contemporary Christian and mainstream artists together on one stage for uplifting music and inspirational messages. Show begins at 7:30 pm.

NFL Experience presented by GMC (Indiana Convention Center)
Produced by the National Football League, the NFL Experience presented by GMC is a pro football interactive theme park that offers participatory games, displays, entertainment attractions, kids’ football clinics, free autograph sessions and the largest football memorabilia show ever.

Tickets ($25 for adults, $20 for children 12 and under) are available by going to Ticketmaster.com, calling 1.866.849.4635, or visiting the NFL Experience presented by GMC box office at the Indiana Convention Center. Online purchase orders can also be printed from ticket kiosks onsite at the Indiana Convention Center. Tickets will go on sale one hour before opening daily. The NFL Experience is open from 3 pm to 10 pm.

Media Center Fan Gallery (JW Marriott – Media Center)
Fans will have free behind-the-scenes access to portions of the Media Center where NFL players, celebrities and other athletes interview along Radio Row. Free tickets available at NFL Shop inside the Indiana Convention Center. Available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during peak hours. More information can be found at www.SuperBowl.com under the “Events” tab.

XLVI Roman Numerals Display (South half of Monument Circle)

Parking and Traffic Information
Street closures:

Now through Super Bowl Sunday, the south half of Monument Circle: the South Meridian spoke, and Market Street’s eastbound lane west of the monument.
Missouri Street from McCarty Street to South Street is completely closed.

Avoid pinch points during afternoon rush hour by avoiding Capitol between Maryland and Washington, Maryland between Capitol and Pennsylvania, and Ohio between Delaware and Capitol.

Other tips:

Enter the Super and Bowl routes as far north or south and east or west as possible to more efficiently detour around heavily congested areas.
Visit indianapolissuperbowl.com and use the tools/maps.
Don’t block the intersection.
Allow extra travel time and please be patient.
Find cabs at West Washington Street and Virginia Avenue between Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Parking Reminders:

Park and Ride garages at 327 North Illinois and 101 North New Jersey are available for $10 onsite on a first come basis. No shuttle space available, but they are within walking distance to Super Bowl activities.
IUPUI Park and Ride: On Friday and Saturday, 4,000 parking spaces are available on the east side of the campus to park and shuttle to Super Bowl activities for $25 per space. Please note: Parking is available on Super Bowl Sunday for $25, but no shuttle service will be provided.
State parking garages *Washington and West Streets & New York and Senate Streets) are available on Friday after 5 pm and all day Saturday.

Super Care Clinic (Union Station, 300 South Meridian, Suite #145)
A full-service urgent care visit center operated by a coalition of Indianapolis-area healthcare facilities. More details at IndySuperCare.org.

And The Winner Is… (#Super46)

On January 4^th, we held a press conference to debut Super 46 Sandwiches, our homage to Super Bowl XLVI to be played here in Indianapolis this Sunday (February 5^th). We worked with Indianapolis Monthly Magazine to put together this great list of 46 of the best sandwiches throughout Indiana. From Fair Oaks to Evansville, from Indianapolis to Roanoke, these 46 sandwiches represent the best of Indiana.

For the past four weeks YOU have been voting on your favorite sandwiches. First, we took the list down from 46 to just 16. From there, the sandwiches were seeded and we began the Super 46 Sandwiches Playoffs. We went from the Sweet 16, down to the Elite Eight, to the Final Four and the Super Bowl of the Super 46 Sandwiches and after more than 250,000 votes we finally have a winner.

Indianapolis Youth Education Town (YET) Ribbon Cutting at the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center

NFL Charities donate $1 million annually as part of its Super Bowl Legacy Grant initiative in order to support underserved youngsters in Super Bowl host cities. For the last 18 years, NFL Charities has supported the construction of Youth Education Towns (YETs) in Super Bowl cities nationwide as a lasting legacy of the game. The YET program is aimed at positively impacting youth in at-risk neighborhoods. This year, NFL Charities contributed $1 million to fund the establishment of the Indianapolis YET.

Tazon Latino VI (NFL Experience)
At 2 pm, this event features notable NFL alumni and Hispanic celebrities competing in a flag football game nationally televised on Univision.

Cory Smith, 3rd Ranger Battalion Combat Veteran
(Touchdown Alley, Super Bowl Village)
At 5:30 pm, Cory Smith is highlighting the difficult transition so many veterans face by making a very difficult, public and personal transition – he’s running home. Home for Cory is Indianapolis, 565 miles from Columbus, Georgia. Cory has teamed up with a 501(c)3 nonprofit, Gallant Few, Inc. which helps veterans by finding veterans who have already previously made their own transition and are now successful civilians.

VH1 Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam (Pepsi Coliseum, Indiana State Fairgrounds)
A premier, national-televised concert featuring star-studded performances by award-winning artists including Gym Class Heroes, B.o.B., All-American Rejects and guest appearances by top celebrities and NFL players. Doors open at 6 pm. Show starts at 7 pm.

Expect more congestion and delays throughout downtown starting today.

New Parking Option now through Saturday: Because of extra capacity, an additional parking option is now available for $10 on a first come basis at the north and east Park and Ride locations (327 North Illinois and 101 North New Jersey). There is no shuttle service from these lots. Parking locations are within walking distance to the Super Bowl activities.

Monument Circle Update: Due to the popularity of the XLVI Roman numerals display and light show, the south half of Monument Circle will remain closed to more safely accommodate pedestrians. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Show will also be taped at the Hilbert Circle Theatre Wednesday through Friday.

Motorists should continue to avoid key “pinch” areas due to expected congestion and delays during peak rush hour periods unless traveling to specific destinations along those streets: During afternoon rush hour, avoid Capitol Avenue between Maryland and Washington Streets, Maryland Street between Capitol and Pennsylvania, and Ohio Street between Delaware and Capitol Streets. During morning rush hour, avoid South Meridian and South Illinois Streets north of South Street.

More than 200,000 people visited the Super Bowl Village in downtown Indianapolis over three days last weekend. I was one of them and it was awesome! But I know that big crowds aren’t everyone’s idea of a good time. Fear not, you can still enjoy Super Bowl festivities without heading downtown — or even to Indianapolis.

Super Celebration Sites

Twenty Super Celebration Sites have been designated throughout Central Indiana and in cities such as Bloomington, Greenfield, Lafayette-West Lafayette, and Richmond. (For you fans of the ABC sitcom “The Middle,” French Lick is not one of the sites.)

Super activities range from site to site. Some highlights include:

An ice rink and toboggan run at Lions Park in Zionsville
Super Bash in Greenfield with family-friendly activities and Dr. Rock & the Rollers for the over 21 crowd
Jersey Jog 5K Fun Run at Glen Miller Park in Richmond (wear your favorite football jersey!)
Nightly football video game tournament at Metropolis Mall in Plainfield
Lady Gaga Monster Ball Pre-Super Bowl Party (with an official Lady Gaga Impersonator) in Lafayette

Super Cars

At each Super Celebration Site, football fans can visit one of 33 Super Cars, iconic Indy cars decked out to represent each of the 32 NFL teams and one Super Bowl car. The Giants and Patriots cars, along with the Super Bowl car, will stay in Super Bowl Village.

The remaining 30 cars will be on display for viewing and photo opportunities at Super Celebration Sites from February 2-5. Additional Indianapolis-area sites will also have Super Cars on display. A list of NFL team cars and the sites where they can be viewed can be found here.

Due to expected congestion and delays during peak rush hour periods, please avoid these key areas unless traveling to specific destinations along these streets:

Know Before You Go – Be sure to use the Super and Bowl detour routes and enter them as soon as possible.
Afternoon commuters: Avoid Capitol Avenue between Maryland Street and Washington Street, Maryland Street between Capitol and Pennsylvania, and Ohio Street between Delaware Street and Capitol Street.
Avoid turning left out of parking garages when street is congested.
Don’t block the cross-walks.

Many downtown workers are using IndyGo service. Indy Express Bus from Carmel and Fishers is adding a 1 pm shuttle to its weekday commuter service starting today.

Super Bowl fans with tickets for Tuesday’s Media Day can reserve a parking space and shuttle ride at the west Park & Ride location (former long-term airport parking) starting at 8 am Tuesday morning.

The occasion: Completion of a big project at work

The place: Fountain Square Brewing Co.

I’d never been there before. You may not have either, since Fountain Square Brewing Co. just had it’s grand opening last weekend (although they’ve been quietly open since December 2, 2011 and brewing since September). My co-worker suggested the location for the free tasting opportunities. That sounded good to me.

I can’t believe I hadn’t even noticed the building before. It’s hard to miss — a bright golden color facing Shelby Street. I’d describe the interior as warehouse chic. Some nice couches. Great original paintings depicting the names of some of the house brews and using Fountain Square locals as models. And a bar big enough to seat maybe a dozen people. I ‘fessed up right away to my lack of knowledge when it comes to beer and the bartender was instantly happy to help me find something I liked. He taught me what the ABV (alcohol by volume) and IBU (international bitterness units) listed on the menu boards meant. And before he handed over anything to taste, he carded me. I know it’s the law, but I’m telling myself it’s because I look so darn young.

My first taste was the Winter Warmer, a darker beer with a bit of nutmeg and raspberry served in a cup about the size that comes with cough medicine. Surprisingly, I really liked the it. I’m not much of a beer girl and when I do drink it, I generally go for the more pale stuff. Next up, I tried the Preacher’s Daughter — one of the brewery’s standard offerings. I liked it, too, but not as much as the Winter Warmer. Then the bartender suggested I try the Backyard Porter. Whoa! He should have warned me it tastes kind of like coffee. Got any beer that tastes like a Diet Coke, man?

My final taste of the afternoon was the Workingman’s Pilsner. Kind of an amateur’s beer, I suppose. Most sophisticated beer drinkers would probably make fun of me for drinking that, but I enjoyed it. My co-workers each had a pint — which sounds big, but is just 16 ounces. I decided the tasting was enough for me for this trip. But I’ll be back. The atmosphere was casual and fun. Some people enjoying pints. Others doing the tasting. Some people dropping in to have their growlers refilled. My single friend particularly liked the odds — there were only three women there, but I don’t think it’s always that way.

If you go, plan to eat at one of the terrific Fountain Square restaurants either before or after your visit, as the Brewing Co. doesn’t have much in the way of food, although you can order food from The Brass Ring across the street and they will deliver it. If you want to give Fountain Square Brewing Co. a try, but aren’t near Fountain Square, ask your local watering hole if they have any on tap. The brewery’s beer, which is brewed on-site, is available in over 40 venues around Indianapolis.

Fountain Square Brewing Co. is open Thursdays and Fridays from 4-9 p.m., Saturdays 2 – 9 p.m. and Sundays noon – 6 p.m. They will be open daily from Monday, January 30 – Sunday, February 5 from noon – 11 p.m. On Friday, February 3, local cover band Project 19 will be playing at the brewery. Friday’s Highlights

First Zipline Ride (Super Bowl Village/South Capitol Avenue)
At Noon, the first riders will be 12 Super Bowl XLVI Student Ambassadors followed by other ceremonial riders. Others scheduled in the first hour include Super Bowl President and CEO Allison Melangton, 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Mark Miles, Indianapolis Colts player Gary Brackett

Super Cars (Meridian Street, just south of Monument Circle)
The Super Cars program showcases 33 Indy Cars, with 32 cars representing each NFL franchise team and one car representing Super Bowl XLVI. On display through Sunday, January 29.

Super Bowl Village Ribbon Cutting (Georgia Street and Capitol Avenue)
At 2:45 pm, opening ceremonies will begin and the Super Bowl Village will official be open from 3 pm – Midnight. Daily attractions include: Tailgate Town (games & tournaments); Zipline ($10 a ride); Kinect NFL PLAY 60 FanDome; ESPN Broadcast Studio; The Huddle at Circle Centre; lights and pyrotechnics shows; Ice Gurus Randy Finch and Derek Maxfield from Food Network’s Ice Brigade creating ice sculptures; Super Dash; Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders; USA Football activities and unique street performers.

Tickets ($25 for adults, $20 for children 12 and under) are available by going to Ticketmaster.com, calling 1-866-849-4635, or visiting the NFL Experience presented by GMC box office at the Indiana Convention Center. Online purchase orders can also be printed from ticket kiosks onsite at the Indiana Convention Center. Tickets will go on sale one hour before opening daily. The NFL Experience is open from 3 pm to 10 pm today.
