TIPP CITY, OH – The Downtown Tipp City Partnership is bringing baseball back to Tipp City! Vintage baseball, a popular sport throughout the Midwest, is coming to Tipp as the Kettering Clodbusters visit on August 16th at 2pm to put on a free exhibition game at the Willowtree Inn, located at 1900 W State Route 571, Tipp City, OH?. There will be ample free parking and the organizing committee is in the process of setting up for the event, so more details are to come.

The Partnership will be fielding a group of volunteers, playing under the name the Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers. Vintage Base Ball is base ball (yes, it was spelled two words prior to the 1880s) played by the rules and customs of the 19th Century. The exhibition game and other events will be held to raise funds and awareness in preparation for fielding a team for the 2010 vintage baseball season.

“Reed Spencer and I have been working on this idea for a couple of years,” said Greg Enslen, team organizer and DTCP President. “We decided that the best way to grow interest in the concept would be to hold an exhibition game with another local team.” Enslen said that he and Spencer have been discussing the idea since 2006, but the time is finally right to kick off the team.

Anyone interested in playing or joining our organizing committee may sign up at our website at www.tippecanoecanaljumpers.com or by contacting Matt Owen, DTCP Executive Director, at (937) 667-8300. For more information or to read about vintage baseball or the history of baseball in Tipp City, please visit our website.

Effective Monday, July 06, the Tipp City Public Library will have reduced hours of operation.
New hours are: Mondays, 12:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays, noon to 5:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, noon to 8:30 p.m.; Thursdays, closed; Fridays, noon to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (opening at 9 a.m. on Saturdays during Tippecanoe Farmers’ Market).
The library’s state funding through the first half of 2009 is down by 15 percent when compared to the same period in 2008. State funding for libraries is predicted to be down 15 to 20 percent for the second half of 2009 as well. These reductions make it impossible for the library to continue to operate as it has in the past.
Currently, program plans are being adjusted to reflect the decreased hours of operations. The library staff will make that information available as soon as it is complete. If you have plans to attend a library program on or after July 06, please call 667-3826 to ensure that it is still offered.
Tipp City Public Library is located at 11 E. Main St., and the telephone number is 667-3826. Find the library online at http://www.tippcitylibrary.org.

TIPP CITY — Main Street downtown will be free of traffic but full of antiques, art and, organizers hope, people during the sixth Antique and Artisan Show Saturday, June 27.

About 70 antique dealers and local artists with everything from pottery to weaving, concrete work to paintings, photography and jewelry are lined up for Saturday’s show.

Antique dealers will offer antiques and collectibles, not flea market items, said Ruth Safreed, event organizer and former owner of Midwest Memories antiques and collectibles mall downtown.

Organizers don’t think the economy will keep people away. Despite the recession, people are buying antiques, said Terri Bessler, who purchased Midwest Memories business from Safreed earlier this year.

Different methods of getting the word out about the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. show are being used this year including e-mails and more Web listings, Safreed said…

TIPP CITY — To participate in high school athletics next school year, students will be required to achieve a 1.5 grade-point average to be eligible. It’s possible they won’t be alone when it comes to having to meet eligibility requirements.

Superintendent John Kronour told the Tipp City Schools Board of Education he’s considering recommending the district require students participating in all extracurricular activities meet eligibility requirements. His recommendation should come yet this summer, Kronour said Monday, June 22.

The board engaged in a lengthy discussion on the proposal to increase the athletic eligibility GPA from a 1.3 to a 1.5. The GPA last was raised — from 1 to 1.3 — for the 2007-08 school year.

TIPP CITY — The Tipp City Public Library will ask voters to help keep it alive.

Details are being hammered out on a tax proposal, now estimated at 0.75-mills, to keep the library’s doors open.

The proposal, which would appear on the November ballot, was discussed briefly Monday, June 22, by the Tipp City Board of Education.

The proposal already was in the works when word of possible deep cuts in library funding in the next biennium came out of Columbus on Friday, June 19.

The board of education will be asked to place the tax request on the ballot on behalf of the library, which was formed as a school district library, Joe Smith, schools treasurer, said.

The schools would not receive any money from the levy. Levy proceeds would come to the district then sent directly on to the library, Smith said.

Mark Mabelitini, library director, said the county auditor has been asked to certify how much a 0.75- mill levy would generate annually. The library board still must determine the length of the proposed levy.

Tipp City Mum Festival, Tipp Monroe Community Services and the Tipp City Arts Council are looking for your help on finding the Grand Marshal(s) for the 2009 Mum Festival Parade.

This year’s theme is WE LOVE OUR MUMS. And we want you to show us how much you love your “mum” and why.

We encourage you to write an essay for the Essay Contest so that you can have a say in who is the 2009 Grand Marshal. If you think your mom or that special woman in your life should be the Grand Marshal because they are so giving, so kind or just such a great person- write it down. Send it in to the Mum Festival Committee, where judges will review and choose the “MUMS” of the year. There is a catch- you must be a school age child during the 2009-2010 school year and the categories will be:

Kindergarten - 1st grade

2nd - 3rd grade

4th - 5th grade

6th - 8th grade

9th - 12th grade

The chosen Grand Marshal(s) will be in the Parade with the person who nominated them. Please drop off your essay to the Tipp Monroe Community Services, or mail it to Tipp City Mum Festival, P.O. Box 1, Tipp City, Ohio 45371 or email to tcms@tippcitymumfestival.org. The website for the Mum Festival is located at http://www.tippcitymumfestival.org. Click here to access the Essay Contest Form.
