Former residents of Miami County, Ohio, find each other in The Villages

By MICHAEL FORTUNA, DAILY SUN

THE VILLAGES — Beth Rindler and Barbara Hilleary were next-door neighbors growing up in Troy, Ohio. Now they live about a mile apart in the Village of Orange Blossom Gardens. “We’ve been friends for 43 years, at least,” Rindler said. Rinder, Hilleary and other former residents of Miami County in Ohio gathered Thursday night at Churchill Street Recreation Center for the Miami County, Ohio, Social Club’s second-ever meeting.

The group debuted with a picnic in March. “We’re hoping it will grow,” Rindler said. “There were at least 50 at the first meeting. We saw friends we hadn’t seen in years.”
“That was a better turnout than we expected,” Hilleary said. “We think it’ll be a big success.” Some 20 people chatted about life in Miami County, and they also enjoyed several snacks. “We enjoy reminiscing,” Rindler said. “Now that we’re older, we’re coming back together,” Hilleary added.

Next month, the club plans on playing bingo and, in honor of Halloween, bringing in orange or black food. Hilleary was born and raised in Troy, moving south to Florida about three years ago. “I loved living in Troy,” Hilleary said. “It’s a great little town, with about 23,000 there. (The Villages) is like the small towns there. I had friends in Tipp City. (In The Villages) you have friends from all over and (they’re in) different villages.”

Hilleary makes it a point to go back to Ohio at least four times a year, while Rindler also visits the area. Colene and Bob Makela lived in Tipp City for nearly 20 years. They came to Ohio from Odgen, Utah, working for the U.S. Air Force.
