How to tell if you are a leaf peeper! - Exploring New England's fall foliage:
If you are a leaf peeper and you know who you are... This weekend 24/25th of Sept starts the 30 days or so of people driving hundreds of miles in search of New England biggest bash! The fall foliage which depending on who you listen to, is the best in the world.
If you want to find routes that I suggest for this weekend then you'll have to go to my fall foliage website at www.jeff-foliage.com. But in general depending on how far north you make it you will see fall color starting like this below

Or if I'm totally wrong you could see this...

But unless the world tips on it's axis between now and Saturday you should get one of the first two images. Also the weather may not agree to play nice and it may be rainy for the next 5-6 days and this always throws off my ability to figure out what the foliage is going to do.

Macro Monday in the garden

I've wish I could say that This guy... gal? Well I suppose if we wait a few weeks we'll know which one. I wish I could say that he was was in my garden but he's in a conservation garden over in Marblehead. There were seven of them earlier this week but yesterday there were only six.

Either the survival of the fittest rule is playing a part or one has wandered off to get into his chrysalis and proceed to the next stage, "the Black Swallowtail butterfly".

At first I thought it might be a Monarch caterpillar but while similar in coloration the Monarch doesn't have the yellowish spots that run the length of the caterpillar's body.

I shot my first shots with just a 24-105 lens and it did ok at getting a good look at them but I still had to crop in to really see it. In this first shot I used my 70mm macro lens on a tripod and there isn't much cropping on this shot. On my computer screen I can even make out little whiskers and my wife said that she wouldn't want his little feet grabbing on to her. They look like daggers.
I've put a series of these up on my Vistaphotography gallery and as always they are available for licensing so please don't just download this photo of mine...

I'll be going back each day but now I'm waiting for them to start moving into their chrysalis stage and if I'm lucky I'll catch one going into it and then I hope to catch more of them coming out...

Marblehead-old-town-house

3 shot HDR handheld bracket shot of the Old Town House, built in 1727, is often referred to as "Marblehead's Cradle of Liberty" for the many pre-revolutionary war meetings held there. It is one of the oldest town halls in America that has been in continuous use.
The upper level of the building served as a town hall, while the lower level was originally used as a market. The upstairs is still used as a town hall, but the lower level is the location of the Marblehead Police Museum. During the American Revolution notable proponents of liberty such as Elbridge Gerry and General John Glover debated independence in the building. The Old Town House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

It's been a cool if not cold spring so far and I happened to be in the area of the Wayside Grist mill near Wayland MA and I thought I would stop in and wander around.
I love this old building and so have most people for the past 80 years.
Henry Ford had this built in 1929 to be like the original grist mill that was on this location.
This one even makes flour today for tourists to purchase.
My favorite thing is to do more than just stand across the stream to photograph it. I want to really know this location so I wander all around it and photograph it from all sides.
I even have a shot of what might be a ghost in a door way... That is getting to know your subject.

Spring photography in scenic New England

Well this morning the sun is just peeking out from behind the clouds making me think about taking a stroll through the nearby woods. In the past few weeks many different flowers are waking up.
The skunk weed, an oft maligned early riser in marshy areas climbs into the sunlight when most all else refuses to budge from beneath the fallen fall foliage of New England last foliage season.

One of my favorite flower first plants is the pussy willow and I have a tree of it a hundred feet from my window. It all too soon turns from the ever so soft fur to green leaves. Almost before you know it, it have leaves and the gray fur is gone.If your area is still lacking a native flower to show up you can look for spring beauty in other things. Plants that are often over looked are the common fungus. Many of you will say ewww and eschew the thought of such things but when the trees are bare, mushrooms and other fungi are always there in odd designs and shapes.

If we get a few more warm days we will start to see the wild crocuses arriving and we will see by mid may the arrival of my favorite "best smelling" flower which is really a bush or tree. The Lilac tree in my side yard is putting out green leaves and hopefully there are no more late season surprise freezes. This way it may give us so flowers this year. The oak tree that was above it is gone and only a red maple holds that position now...

What is funny is that the main red maple that held sway for so many years fell down two years ago but it is still putting out leaves so it hasn't quite given up the ghost, yet.
I just wrote an article for the New England Photography Guild site and if you haven't been there yet, you should stop in. This is a new site where some of the best photographers in New England are being listed. If you just like to browse New England scenic photography, then this is the place to go.

Plus they are constantly writing new articles on their passion... Which is photographing the New England countryside. If you want advice on what kind of kayak is good for birding or what trails yield good mountain peak shots, or my favorite, great little towns for fall foliage, then this is the place to go. Also there is the New England Shutterbugs website where an equally talented group of photographers are showing their talents off.
One other thing I just thought to add is if you have an afternoon free and you want to capture some of the colors to come but the flowers aren't there yet...
Try stopping in at your local greenhouse and see if they have their tulips in (like my shot here). You can't tell that this is a nursery greenhouse and you can see more versions like this at my Vistaphotography online art gallery. This way you can enjoy photographing a massive garden full of color without any of the work associated with it. Also you cost is very minimal since you didn't have to end them or purchase them.
But I will add that even if you find that the owners of the green house don't mind that you photograph all their hard work, you still might give back to them. If you have some really good shots (even if you're not a pro) and you are shooting in digital. You might share some of the shots with them. Maybe make a print for them and give them a CD of images. If you are more towards the pro side then you might also ask that if they did find a publishing use for your images on their website or brochure that they give you credit (bonus for you).

Thoughts of summer

We're pulling away from winter every day and even though it's only 42 degrees this morning I was able to walk around in shorts and check the yard.

I won't hurt your eyes by posting a picture of that... :-) There are a few things that should never be seen this early in the year...

But the snow has half melted from the yard and the buds are greening up on the lilac bush and the forsythia.

In another few weeks we will start to have some early color on the landscape.

It might be a while before we see the likes of our little friend at top but I have faith it's coming.

Since most of us are dying to get out then I will post a link to my listing of Maple sugar shacks. Now you can get out and indulge your sweet tooth.

The flower shows are getting ready to start from Blitheworld down in Bristol RI to the annual rite of spring in the Boston which will be held March 16-20, 2011.

Yes you may bow to me

Well it warmed up earlier this week and I was starting to defrost and even got out on the deck to clear the ice build up.
Captain Hook who joined us last week from Rhode Island has decided that this home will do... as long as we keep feeding him the raw and cooked salmon. I'm not sure which he preferred but the leftovers disappeared very quickly last night.

If you are wondering about the title... The Capt'n is a Maine Coon and he is to what I was referring to. I love to visit Maine but I also take care of my father 24/7 so I don't get out near as much as I used to. Also it's darn cold out there today and until it gets a bit warmer I don't feel the need to stray from my computer... :-)

Cat TV on the Squirrel channel

My last cat passed away three years ago so when the opportunity to receive the Capt'n in the house I asked Lisa and then jumped on it.
Since then the past week has been a learning experience into Maine Coon behavior. In the second picture you can see that he enjoy's cat TV in the mornings after breakfast and we try to limit the amount of his television watching but he just loves the two channels that we get in the morning..
The Squirrel channel is a favorite closely followed by the bird channel. I'm not sure which channel to cut back on and maybe you can tell me which one you think he should cut back on.. :-O

He has settled in and seems to gravitate to a pile of Tax papers on my floor that I need to get to.. He says he will finish looking them over but it has been a week and so far I don't see much looking over unless it's through his eyelids..

As you can see here he is also fond of keeping notes in my Canon planner as far as my lighting notes... But so far his notes are simply "Too much use of flash in my eyes".
So I'm still waiting on him to finish going over my papers and I guess it could be worse if he felt that need to go on the papers as a temp litter box.
So far "those" accidents have been few but I'm sure if I forget to clean his box, he'll let me know his displeasure...

Well I have to get to work on other more depressing things.. Like my taxes and business related work... and if I'm lucky I can get back to a wedding album that I've been trying to finish up the first draft except for the Capt'n has been holding it up by coming up and you guessed it... stealing the mouse.
There's no end to his delaying tactics... but I will get my work done whether he wants me to or not... :-)

One of the things I love to find in my travels in New England is when you are driving along and all of a sudden a wall of forest opens up and you can see for miles.
It just makes you go WOW! and if the traffic permits, you can stop and appreciate it. This is not one of those spots since there was no where to pull off...
Isn't that usually the case.. Where there is a gorgeous view you have no pull off to slow down and appreciate it and if there is nothing but a wall of trees then there is room for 6 tractor trailers and 72 cars...

Lucky for me there wasn't much in the way of traffic so I was able to stop long enough to grab a couple of shots but relaxing there was not an option.

If you have a similar story and a surprising location that you would like to share I would love to hear about it.
Oh! if you are interested in where this one is??? Well if you want to follow my foot steps (literally) I have a special GPS that hooks up to my camera and then logs into software and creates a step by step map that you can follow. It also allows you to see where all my photos are taken.

This year the summer was hot and dry and the result was had the color starting to show in significant amounts in the middle of Sept and this is closer to years ago (8 plus) versus the more recent past where the color really had been starting about the last week of Sept in the North East Kingdom and northern Maine. {Click here for peak foliage forecast map at Yankee}

I probably sound like a broken record when I mention that every year is different. This year, (again) a bunch of folks were caught off guard and yes, I was also skeptical on the reports of waaay early color! (Even I, was used to looking for 29 Sept to start traveling and not 15 Sept.)

One big problem reported was that perfect peak color was difficult to find because many trees were stressed by the overly dry conditions. But these same dry conditions while starting some trees early also made some trees stay green until late in October. (actually worked in our favor)

What this did for us was prevent the Nor'easter from removing all the leaves in one big blow. It would take down all the peak leaves but we had a ton of trees that had yet to turn. So if you were lucky you still had a good opportunity to see great color. (The last shot was taken on 26 Oct)

Well I have a bunch of little stories I'll continue to post in 2010 and I hope to hear from you in the comments.

I'm Jeff "Foliage" Folger and I'm a photographer based in New England.
I have what you would call a small passion for recording the fall foliage season in New England.
With that in mind, I've created a temporary site for a new fall Foliage website. This site is named Jeff-Foliage.com (well all the really good website names are taken so I went with this one) and I intend for it to be a place where you can find helpful links, routes, information, photography by some of the best local photographers in New England.

Eerie Hollow Cemetery music by Nox Arcana

The Eerie Hollow Cemetery was once again in gruesome evidence this 2010 Halloween in Hooksett NH. I showed up on a foreboding afternoon with drizzle making electrical connections dicey.

Who am I? I'm a photographer out of Salem MA, and I'm Jeff Folger of Vistaphotography. I'm primarily a Wedding and event photographers but as you can see here, Weddings and Mitzvahs aren't the only thing I do. I find that wedding receptions which tend to be dark are perfect training for this kind of shooting.

Denny Stanley who designs the concept then builds the Cemetery from the ground up each year has once again done a superb job. His Pumpkin Thieves that are seen throughout the show are his newest creations.

The Pumpkin Thieves are also available for sale. Nothing is mass produced and if you want to buy American and I know you all do! Then contact Denny to see what he can do for you. There will be a full website soon that will enable all of this much easier. but for now watch the video and write down his email address at the end credits.

28 october a beautiful morning off my deck

Early morning sun off the deck as my wife goes to work and I prepare for a radio interview. The color isn't spectacular but it does look nice. I've been finding color all week long in the local area. and with Halloween weekend coming up the days are numbered so folks should get out and find the color before it's all on the ground.

Wandering through fall foliage with Jeff Foliage

Well the fall foliage season is full upon us and even though we have been hit by Nicole and this current Nor'easter I'm thinking we'll still have a lot of leaf cover left on the trees.
I was out photographing from Columbus Day weekend until Wednesday and the color I was finding would appease any foliage-phile. and the sweet area was the southern NH region on route 16 and 113 near Tamworth NH and the Ossipee lake area. I think this Sunday through the following week

northern Massachusetts and CT and RI will be good targets for color exploration. If you check in on Yankee's fall foliage forum you can ask the locals that live around the area what they are seeing.
Also check the Yankee fall foliage interactive map to get real time reports.

Also did you know this is the last year for the Keene pumpkin festival. I check with the festival organizers and they confirmed this was true. But whether this is the last or not make your way to the Keene Pumpkin festival and enjoy the family friendly atmosphere.

Fall Foliage gets a knock down from Nicole but comes back swinging

October has arrived and this year Mother Nature has been causing problems by giving us a real summer with hot temps and this has also led to dry conditions that had the experts scratching their heads (myself included) wondering what sort of fall color we would have.

Well to start off the Yankee Magazine foliage website has a peak foliage map that you can view an approximate guess as to when peak will hit a specific location in New England.

This is the first year that the map was pretty close. You see the map was built on older data and we used to get color earlier then we have in the past 4-5 years. This had lead to folks getting used to seeing shots like this later rather than earlier.

This year the foliage experts thought that the drought conditions might dull down the colors but apparently the color was doing fantastic, up until tropical storm Nicole knocked much of the peak leaves to the ground.
But before you go and cancel your trips! Heed this! The color this year is early but this storm only knocked the leaves down that were at peak. the leaves from the middle of VT and NH were still green so they are now turning and by this weekend they will making the Columbus Day weekend a show not to be missed. This will also continue into the next couple of weeks as the color flows south into Massachusetts and CT & RI.

Here is a shot from this past Saturday up near Danville Vermont and you can see the color took a hit but it was still great to see.

Elisa Shaw is a self taught photographer who began seriously pursuing the craft 10 years ago. Further inspired by the solar maximum of 2001 and the desire to capture the aurora borealis on film, a hobby quickly grew to encompass virtually all aspects of nature and outdoor life. She and her family live in the Hudson Valley of NY and travel extensively throughout New England each year.

Peter Lynch's daughter Elizabeth married French count and lawyer Gonzaque Mariede Montrichard of Paris and tonight I along with a few hundred boaters were able to witness the festivities at the mouth of Marblehead Harbor.
Normally I tell others that you need to be on a tripod to take good fireworks but tonight I didn't have my tripod and to make it worse I was handheld and on a boat rocking on the waves.

This is the water view of the Peter Lynch estate on Marblehead neck, I'll have to thank him for throwing on all the lights for me... :-)

Well my toss rate was very high and even these shots aren't tack sharp but considering all the factors I'm OK with them. What do you think?

Warming up at the Queechee Balloon Festival

The 31st annual Queechee Balloon festival went off last weekend and the weather was near perfect. this shot above was one of my favorites and I spent the late afternoon there, through the evening.
