In this part of the tutorial we will design the database according to the VB6.0 Project Requirements, we have 3 TextBoxes and 1 Image control, so we will need 4 fields in the database table. We will create only one table because there is no need to create two, just simply like that.

Note, there are several ways to store data from Visual Basic windows application project on the hard drive, using MS-Access 2003 is one of the easiest ways to accomplish this task, considering your are creating a personal windows desktop application, also it is a very handy and effective method considering creating this application for some else (client).

If you don't have Microsoft Access 2003, then download it included in MS Office 2003 package from Microsoft. Access 2003 Database is the most well known database ever used with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.

Microsoft Access Database 2003 (*.mdb) file capacity is 2GB, of course this is nothing in comparison MS SQL Server, however, MS Access 2003 is better in case of running locally (on the same machine) while MS Sql Server is better to work on multiple machines at the same time (Networking).

In our VB6.0 example (Phone-Book), in order to design the perfect MS Access 2003 database you need to know what do you want to store and what do you want to retrieve and what is ability of the database you have (MS-Access 2003) that runs on your machine (i.e. WinXp, Win7, Win8 or Win10).

Our example is small, so, special requirements are not considered, so I choosing MS-Access 2003 as a database with VB6 to create a desktop application on Microsoft Windows Xp is a perfect choice.

Navigate to your main folder then using the mouse right-click choose from new (Microsoft Office Access Application) as shown in .......... shape (1)

Rename the files from (New Microsoft Office Access Application) to (MyBook), open [MyBook].

Open our VB6 Project, navigate to (Project) then (References) then from the list, choose (Microsoft ActiveX Data Object 2.8 Library or ADO 2.8 Library) as shown in the following photo.

Why do we use ADO 2.8 library ?

ADO 2.8 was included in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, as part of the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8. A redistributable version of MDAC 2.8 is also available; note that this redistributable version should only be installed on Windows 2000. ADO 2.8 addresses several security-related concerns:

Hard drive access is not allowed outside a trusted zone.
In cross-domain scripting involving non trusted sites, the following operations are disabled: Stream.SaveToFile, Stream.LoadFromFile, Recordset.Save, and Recordset.Open, used in conjunction with the adCmdFile flag or with the Microsoft OLEDB Persistence Provider (MSPersist).

Recordset.Open , Recordset.Save , Stream.SaveToFile , and Stream.LoadFromFile operate on physical files only. These methods now verify that file handles point to physical files only.

How to create phonebook in vb6 with MS Access 2003

Create a new folder on your desktop, name it (PhoneBook).
Open your Visual Basic 6.0, create new (Windows Application Project).
Save As .... your project in your (PhoneBook) folder on Desktop with the name (MyPhoneBook)
Or, before saving, from (Project) , (Project Properties) , (General Tab) , (Project Title : MyPhoneBook) then from (Make Tab) , (Application Title : MyPhoneBook) then click (OK).
Save As .... your [Form1] from (Project Panel) in the same folder with the name (MainFrm)
Go to the (Properties Panel) and change the Name property of the Form1 to (MainFrm).
Close your project.
Your folder (PhoneBook) now should look like this

(4) Line1 : Is a graphic control grabbed from the Tools Panel and dropped on the form to define a straight line or just a boundary to something, in this case ; it's just a line to define the Headline, it also could be put on a form using the code like this :

(5) Timer1 : Is a control and can be found among the controls on the Tools Panel, Timer1 properties can be sat from Properties Panel of with code, we only care about two properties (1- Enabled=True & 2-Interval=1000)

(6) Timg & Label5 : Timg is the name of our Image control, once we place it on the form we can resize it as in the screenshot above to fit its place, we set its property (Stretch=True) and property (Picture='Any picture JPG in the main folder, as you will see, I created one for it and will be found in the source code at the end of this lesson.'). The label5 condition is similar to Label2.

Note :

The Picture displayed already in the Image control represents the default picture that will be saved in the database table, if no other pictures needed to be assigned to a friend's photo.

(7) LblTime : a Label control and will be used to display the current Date & Time on the form [MainFrm]. It derives its functionality from Timer1 control. If you wish to display the current Time & Day of your MS Windows using Visual Basic 6.0, you can use this code

(8) CmdSave : Is a CommandButton control, can be found on the Tools panel and we drag those CommandButtons because we will use them to execute VB6 command lines with them. CmdSave is the [Caption] property of the CommandButton, while "CmdSave" is the [Name] propert of it. We will use this button to save the data entered on the form into the database. [Style] property is set to (1- Graphical) to enable us to activate the [BackColor] property of the CommandButton(s).

(9) CmdShow : Another CommandButton, we will use it to access the other form we will create in the future to manage [Edit \ Delete] friends.

(10) CmdRes : CommandButton that is used in our project to reset the data entered on the form or clear the TextBox controls from all the data entered, in order to Cancel or Add New entry.

(11) CmdEnd : A CommandButton is used to terminate/exit the application and its all opened forms.

(12) Label1 & Tnm : Label1 is a label control, its [Caption] property is "Name"and is used to define the TextBox control [Tnm] as the name of the friend while "Tnm" is the value of the property [Caption], means that in the following TextBox called [Tnm] we will write the name of the friend we wish to save in the database. "Tnm" is the [Name] property of the TextBox control and [ForeColor] property is set to "Blue", [Font] property is set to "Times New Roman, Bold, 11" and so is all the TextBoxes . The value of the [Text] property (What we write in the TextBox) of the TextBox control is what will be saved to the database table in the corresponding Table Field .

(13) Label3 & Tmob : Those are also a Label and a TextBox control used to enter the mobile number. Remember that you can always set the location of all the controls on the form using the code or using the mouse.

(14) Label4 & Thp : Another Label and TextBox controls placed on the form [MainFrm] to show the place of where we will enter the home-phone of the friend, and they use the same design property as the previous 2 sets 12,13.

Solution
Open Visual Basic 6 project that causes the problem
Add-In -> Report Designer
Create a new Crystal Report file (I.e CrystalRep.rpt)
Re-try your code with the new Report file (CrystalRep.rpt)

You will need to re-create all your reports in VB6 using Crystal Reports 4.6 to solve this problem.

Solution

Search for those files [CRPE32.dll , IMPLODE.dll]
Make sure they are present in the same folder as Crystl32.ocx file
[I.e C:\windows\system32 (for 64 bit programs) and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (for 32 bit programs) or C:\Windows\System32 (for 32 bit)]
Register Crystl32.Ocx file using [Start->Run-> regsvr32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\crystl32.ocx"].

Problem :

When Working with Visual Basic 6.0 on Win7-32 or Win7-64, the controls [TextBox, Labels, CommandButton ..... etc] placed on the vb 6.0 Form [VB6 IDE] move slowly.

Solution :

Go to Visual Basic 6.0 main path (Microsoft Visual Studio on Main Partition), commonly is : C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98\

Locate VB6.exe and Right-Click on it. Make sure you have the full privileges (Computer Administrator), choose Properties

VB6 Controls move slowly on IDE Win7

Navigate to Compatibility section, and mark / activate the option (Run this program in compatibility mode for:) and then from the drop-down menu choose Windows XP (Service Pack3), also below in the settings section mark / activate the option Disable desktop composition.

Click OK and test your Visual Basic 6.0 IDE, place some controls on a VB6 Form, try to move those controls, you notice that the controls are no longer move slowly. Also, make sure you are Win7 computer admin before applying these options.

Nothing to worry about here, the popped up message with close and Visual Basic 6.0 will work fine, and then when you exit Visual Basic 6.0 on Windows 7, the color schema will return to the default as before without any problems.

(C) You tried to open a write-protected file for sequential Output or Append. (S) Open the file for Input or change the write-protection attribute of the file.

(C) You tried to open a file on a disk that is write-protected for sequential Output or Append. (S) Remove the write-protection device from the disk or open the file for Input.

(C) You tried to write to a file that another process locked. (S) Wait to open the file until the other process releases it.

(C) You attempted to access the registry, but your user permissions don't include this type of registry access. (S) On a 32-bit Microsoft Windows systems, a user must have the correct permissions for access to the system registry. Change your permissions or have them changed by the system administrator, as for Win7, see solution below ...

Solution for Win7

Set Windows 7 UAC [User Account Control] to [No Notifications] or just configure VB6.exe security for the Windows 7 current user to Full Control. You will notice that vb6 IDE works just fine.

Create a new folder on your desktop, name it (PhoneBook).
Open your Visual Basic 6.0, create new (Windows Applicatio).
Save As .... your project in your (PhoneBook) folder on Desktop with the name (MyPhoneBook), or before saving, from (Project) , (Project Properties) , (General Tab) , (Project Title : MyPhoneBook) then from (Make Tab) , (Application Title : MyPhoneBook) then click (OK).

Save As .... your [Form1] from (Project Panel) in the same folder with the name (MainFrm), and go to the (Properties Panel) and change the Name property of the Form1 to (MainFrm). Close your project.

Introduction

Which level would read this?

Creating Digital Clock using Visual Basic 6.0 is easy, you only need a timer and a textbox or label to accomplish this, actually creating personal calendar & time are so easy. But Analog Clocks are not that easy for a Visual Basic beginner, but is a good example to start moving from being a beginner to professional.

Logic

How does it work?

We all have Analog Clocks in our houses or even wear one in our right hand, and we know that it refers to time and some of them show (Day, Month, Year) too, but we are not here to discuss how the timing system work, only the Analog Clock. The Analog Clock has 3 indicators or hands (Seconds, Minutes, Hours) and they don't just spin in circles, they TICK.

The indicator/hand of Seconds ticks 60 tick in order to cause 1 tick to the indicator/hand of the Minutes, and each 60 ticks of the indicator/hand of Minutes cause 1 tick to the indicator/hand of Hours.So, we have an equation which is :

1 hour=60 minutes
1 minute=60 seconds
1 second=1 tick of the Visual Basic Timer Control.

Project Design

How to design an Analog Clock for Visual Basic 6.0 ?

Yes, designing for VB6 is different from designing for VB.Net. We will need a photo of an Analog Clock, you can use Google search to download Analog Clock.JPEG or just download one of those Photos :

Or you can design one like this :
1) Using any painting application (PhotoShop or Paint) create a circle with 12 signs represent the 12 hours (1, 2, 3, ... 12) and make sure that your photo's dimensions are equal (Square) I.e 300x300 px in order to fit the form's dimensions.
2) Save your photo as JPEG format as by default Visual Basic 6.0 doesn't work with PNGs or GIFs.
3) Include your photo in your application's main folder.
4) Open Visual Basic 6.0 and Create New Project.
5) Make sure your form's dimension are equal and that you are using Twips as ScaleMode and Set AutoDraw to True.
6) Set the Photo property as your photo in your main folder.
7) Place a new PictureBox control on your form in the middle of it and a Label control.

How it works ...

>How do the Clock hands go round in circles ?

The circle (Clock face) is a circle with (12) numbers, this circle is divided into 360 degrees (even units) with 0 degree at 3 O'clock and 90 degrees at 12 O'clock, and the movement on the form (Circle) starts from PointF at the upper-left corner where X increase as we move to the right and Y increases as we move to the down. See Shape (1) & Shape (2) for details.

- Best way to understand a circle is when you know that circles are drawn according to the square within, meaning that when you draw a square shape then you be sure that the elliptic shape surrounds the square that touches the 4 corners or this square is an even circle with even 360 units called degrees. See shape (3).

- Now, when we want to know the central point where the 3 hands (Hours Hand, Minutes Hand and Seconds Hand) will spin around, then we will need to specify the central point "PointF" (X,Y) in the very middle of the circle, which will be also the center of the square shape within, and as long as our form will be a square shape (Width=Height) then it's easy to calculate the position of this point.

- Now, we want to draw 3 hands starting from this PointF and the 3 hands have different length (Seconds Hand is the tallest, Hours Hand is the shortest). Unless you know how to centralize the 3 hands on the form, we won't be drawing these hands at the Design Time (IDE). To draw a line you need to know its length. PointF (X,Y) is the start Point of drawing while PointE (X,Y) is the end point of drawing.
Line.Length=PointF to PointE , so according to shape (2), if I want to draw a line with length 500 Pixels then I need to set the PointF to PointE=500 like this Me.Line (0,0)-(500,500), VbRed , that means that I will draw a line from the Point (0,0) to the Point(500,500), if my form is 500Px then I will be drawing a line from the upper-left corner PointF to the lower-right corner PointE, see Shape (4).

- In our example the form is a circle, but the form has even coordinates (4650 X 4650) twips while 4650 twips=310 Pixels ( * To convert twips to pixels we use 4650 / 15).
Naturally our Radius (R) is (4650/2)=2325 Twips (155 Pixels). In order to draw a circle on a form with 2325 Twips Radius, then our code is as following and is a part of the application project example of course. If you applied this code to a new Visual Basic 6.0 project then you will get a Round Shaped Form, but you will see it better if you set the Picture property of the form to a 310X310 Pixels JPG Picture and set the BorderStyle property of the form to=0 - None :

- Drawing a line on the form : We said that if you wanted to draw a line on the form you must determine a starting point to draw from PointF (X1, Y1) and an end point to end draw to it PointE (X2, Y2) but, how do we determine the Line's length ? See Shape (5) first .....

- The picture in Shape (5) shows how is it done to draw a line from PointF(X1,Y1) to PointE(X2,Y2) or from (2325,2325) to (1500,1500) using Twips as the measuring unit and how twip points are placed on a Visual Basic form of a size of (4650 X 4650) twips. Remember that we started drawing from the center point until we reached (1500X1500) the PointE.

- The Size of this line When you measure, it will be (825 Twips from doing 2325-1500). Why the line is leaning and not straight ?
The answer is : Because of its Angle

-What is a line's Angle ?

- Angle generally is that figure or is the figure formed when 2 rays meet in one point, while the 2 rays are called the Angle Sides. Angle is measured by the Degree(s) like that symbol º, for example (90º ). How to use Angles in Visual Basic drawing lines on the form.
It is confusing because we only have one line and we want to make an Angle for it, and notice that the line slopes.

How to determine the Angle of a line drawn in Visual Basic 6.0 ?

We don't have a protractor but we have this :
60 seconds and minutes ticks within a circle [Seconds & Minutes hand]
12 Hours ticks [Hour hand]

Each tick represents an even angle, so we have :
59 angles to create a minute
59 angles to create an hour
23 angles to create a day

- Some applications are free trials and they're controlled using code. If you want to limit your application abilities on the client machine, then you will find those ideas great, regardless the Visual Basic Version I'm using VB6, you can still use them in .Net too.

1) Limit your VB6 Application to a certain number of times to run on the client's machine, seems sometimes to do the trick but it also can be modified easily, means your limitations can be broken easily if your client have some knowledge about programming or asked for help from a programmer. But as long as the idea is kept hidden and unknown inside the Source Code, then it would be hard to be discovered anyway. You can also limit your VB6 application setting a start Date and End Date instead of the values given in the source code below.

2) Limit your VB6 application running once only. Some application can not run more than one interface specially those which connects to a Database because you don't want to duplicate connection to an already opened Database or Tables. You will need to limit your application to only run single instance or prevent your VB6 Application from running more than once.
You will need to do those steps though,

- Add Module Module1.bas, copy the following code into it.
- Then, from Menu Project, Project Properties, Start Up Object, choose Sub Main

You can also use the 1st example to prevent your application from running twice at the same time, but the second example is much more secure then the 1st one.

Understanding how resizing controls work !

The basic Idea of resizing :

When resizing : Control Width grows and shrinks when form (Container) grows and shrinks with (Module). The (Modu) is the growing or shrinking Module ....

Let say we have a control (Width = 10) on a form (Width = 20) then (Control : Width) = (10 : 20)

So when resizing the (form to = 40) then the (Control will grow to = ???) --------- Answer :
( 10 : 20 ) = ( ??? : 40)
??? = 20 , Why ?

Because the (Modu = [40 / 20]), then the ??? = 10 * Modu
??? = 20 ......... And so on ...

In the example attached you will notice that resizing the form with cause resizing the control as well.

Conceptual Differences

Negotiate Property

In Visual Basic 6.0, the Negotiate property of a ProgressBar control can be used to automatically hide the control when a toolbar is displayed.

The Visual Basic 2005 ProgressBar control does not have a Negotiate property; you can achieve the same effect by setting the Visible property to false at run time.

Orientation Property

In VB6, a Progress Bar control can be displayed either horizontally or vertically by setting the Orientation property. The Visual Basic 2005 ProgressBar control can only be displayed horizontally.

Using Conditional Compilation

Conditional compilation lets you selectively compile certain parts of the program. You can include specific features of your program in different versions, such as designing an application to run on different platforms, or changing the date and currency display filters for an application distributed in several different languages.

Structuring Code for Conditional Compiling

To conditionally compile a part of your code, enclose it between #If...Then and #EndIf statements, using a Boolean constant as the branching test. To include this code segment in compiled code, set the value of the constant to –1 (True).

For example, to create French language and German language versions of the same application from the same source code, embed platform-specific code segments in #If...Then statements using the predefined constants conFrenchVersion and conGermanVersion.

If the value of the conFrenchVersion constant is set to
 True at compile time, the conditional code for the French language

 are three ways to set conditional compilation constants: in the 
Conditional Compilation Arguments field of the Make tab on the Project 
Properties dialog box, on a command line, or in code.

Conditional
 compilation constants have a special scope and cannot be accessed from 
standard code. How you set a conditional compilation constant may depend
 on the scope you want the constant to have.

Compilation Arguments field (if you are compiling your application for 
the French language version). When you compile the program, this 
argument will satisfy the #If...Then condition, and the code between the
 #If...Then and #EndIf statements will be included in the compiled 
program.

If you have a complex #If...Then statement, containing 
one or more #ElseIf statements, you will need to set additional 
constants. You can set multiple constants by separating them with 
colons, as in the following example:

Setting Constants on the Command Line

If you 
want to start compilation from a command line, use the /d switch to 
enter conditional compilation constants, as shown here:

vb6.exe /make MyProj.vbp /d conFrenchVersion=–1:conANSI=0

No
 space is required between the /d switch and the first constant. 
Command-line declarations override declarations entered on the Project 
Properties dialog box, but do not erase them; arguments set on the 
Project Properties dialog box remain in effect for subsequent 
compilations.

- In VB.Net it is easy to check if all textboxes values are empty or not, but in Visual Basic 6.0 it is quite tricky because there is no (String.IsNotNullOrEmpty) in VB 6.0.

- Let say you have VB 6.0 Project with Database of any sort, your VB6.0 Project has many TextBoxes (i.e. 15 TextBoxes), and you're adding 10 textboxes contents into a database table fields, and all of them are required (*), so you can do something like this :

You'd need something more flexible and not too long to write every time, also you'd need something dynamic.
