TechUnwrapped reported on Saturday that Chronic-Dev Team member Joshua Hill first outed Hotz’s status at Facebook. During an online interview, Hill stated that Hotz had backed out of an iPad 2 hacking challenge because of his current day job at the social network.
Techmeme’s Gabe Rivera later tweeted that Hotz’s Facebook profile corroborated Hill’s claims.
“Facebook is really an amazing place to work…first hackathon over,” reads a June 22 post on Hotz’s Facebook wall.
A Facebook spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
In 2007, Hotz gained notoriety for jailbreaking Apple’s iPhone, allowing the handset (and, subsequently, other devices running Apple’s iOS software) to be used outside AT&T’s network.
Then, in 2010, Hotz published a jailbreak for Sony’s PlayStation 3 gaming console, which Sony countered with a high-profile suit against Hotz in early 2011. The company eventually settled with Hotz out of court, but their action against the hacker led to a major cyberattack on the PlayStation gaming network that was allegedly carried out by hacktivist collective Anonymous. Tributes To Mark Achebe’s Exit, Eulogies Cultural Shows

Awka, the capital of Anambra State stood still, yesterday, as the body of the literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe arrived the state for its final journey to Ogidi, his home town, in Idemili North Local Government Area. His remains will be interred later today.

The famous writer of Things Fall Apart, who died in Boston, United States of America, USA, was flown into Enugu from Abuja and was finally brought to Awka, at exactly 1.07pm.
Early morning rains which started at about 6 am had welcomed the body of the late literary giant, to Anambra State as the people prepared to troop into the Alex Ekwueme Square in the state capital to attend ceremonies lined up for him by the state government and the burial committees. By 7.00 am, a large number of security operatives had taken positions while members of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, were already directing traffic to appropriate places.
The remains of late Achebe was brought in a motorcade to the expansive Alex Ekwueme Square Awka, into the waiting hands of his kinsmen, friends, colleagues and high profile delegates from governments across the world.
Obi, Ngige lead mourners
Governor Peter Obi and the senator representing Anambra Central in senate, Achebe’s senatorial zone, Dr. Chris Ngige received Achebe’s body at Amansea border between Enugu and Anambra states to a waiting crowd comprising civil servants, politicians and journalists. The entourage headed straight to the Alex Ekwueme Square where prayers and tributes were offered.
The body lay in state at the middle of the square and was surrounded by Achebe’s kinsmen wearing traditional attires with red caps to match.

On ground to witness the solemn moment of tribute anchored by actor Bob Manuel Udokwu were Chris Odom, Professor Joneta Cole, Director of Smithsonian Institute, Washington; Prof. Scott Meyers of Penguin Books, and Professor Justin Whelan of the University of Cambridge, who represented the Arch bishop of Canterbury.
There were also members of the Achebe family comprising his widow, Prof. Mrs. Achebe, and his children- Dr. Ike Achebe, Prof Chinelo Achebe, Dr. Chidi Achebe and Prof. Nwando Achebe.
In his glowing tribute to Achebe, the Director of Penguin, Scott described the late writer as a very great man of letters, whose works have had a succession of influence across generations of writers.
He noted particularly the influence of Achebe’s first three books; Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God and No Longer At Ease, which he described as a “ trilogy of African literature, stressing that “I have not seen others’ books or writers that have been so studied and reprinted like Achebe and his works.
Among other personalities that witnessed the Awka ceremony were Senator Ndoma Egba, senate leader who led other senators namely, Senators Uche Chukwumerije, Mohammed Magoro and Chris Ngige to represent the senate.

Anglican Bishop of Awka, Rt. Rev Alex Ibezim, in his opening prayer said that with the death of Achebe, things have fallen apart and what Nigerians should pray for is the mercy of God.
According to the Bishop, “Achebe’s death is a celebration of life because he achieved so much for humanity. It is, however, mourning in a way because we will no longer see him and this is painful.”
To the traditional ruler of Ndikelionwu, Eze Professor Chukwuemeka Ike, himself a renowned author, Achebe neither benefitted from any godfather, nor participated in the looting of treasury, but worked hard to become an international figure.
Chairman of Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Dr. Innocent Onwubuya described Achebe as both a traditional person, having been the president general of Ogidi Town Union and an academician who had done the nation proud.

Others who paid tribute to Achebe include Igwe Prof Laz Ekwueme, president of Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, Prof Remi Raji; Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Univerisity, Professor Boniface Egboka; former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili; Mr. Chike Momah, who was Achebe’s classmate at both Government College, Umuahia and University College, Ibadan.
Governor Peter Obi, in his speech, commended Nigerians for according the literary icon a deserving respect.
He said that Achebe’s personality towered so high that no fewer than 12 heads of state sent condolence messages to him after his death and urged Nigerians to emulate his lifestyle.
To the governor, the writer had done his beat and that if there is indeed heaven, ‘Achebe will definitely be there because he did his race so well.’
Ndigbo will miss him — Ohanaez
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said yesterday, that the departed literary giant, Professor Chinua Achebe whose remains would be finally laid to rest at his Ogidi country home in Anambra State today, would be missed for a very long time.
The umbrella Igbo organization said Achebe’s departure has left a yawning gap in the horizon of the Igbo nation.
Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Dr. Joe Nwaorgu, who spoke with Vanguard on the demise of the renowned author, said that the organization viewed Achebe’s exit as “very tragic” and would not be forgotten easily.

He said: “Achebe’s departure is a traumatic blow to Ndigbo and indeed Africans. Though 82 is a ripe age, we would have wanted him to live forever. His demise has left a yawning gap in our horizon. We will miss him a lot and for a long, long time. He cannot be forgotten too easily because he is the man who put our essence into sharp focus with his magnum work- Things Fall Apart. Therein he re-established the long damaged self confidence and psyche of the Africans who had been plummeted by colonial powers into seeing themselves as less than human.”

“Achebe showed that the African has history, religion, philosophy, government (law and order), art, good music and all fabric of a civilized society. Thereafter no one could see the African from colonial eyes only nor could anyone write about us for us.

“Achebe has started renaissance or rebirth. Africans could now tell their real story by themselves confidently. He was a genius and among his peers he was a colossus.
“We are extremely happy and proud that this titan was of Igbo stock. He has done the continent proud and he has lit a light that will beam everywhere. His memory will remain evergreen in our hearts, Ndigbo wish Achebe, the guru, peaceful repose in the bosom of our Lord.”
To the young generation of Ndigbo, Nwaorgu said they should emulate Achebe as role model known for maintaining core Igbo values, justice, equity, courage and enterprise or resourcefulness.

Wonder tthey say will never end in this life, the photo you are seeing is a 62 year old retired school principal who killed his mother in 2003, dried her remains and stored them in a cupboard in a room that served as his shrine for ten years.

He was arrested by the Imo State police last week after a family member discovered the gruesome sight.
Dr. Chimezie Osuigwe was arrested after the embalmed body of his mother was discovered hidden in a cupboard.

Police say the body of the woman, Lucy Osuigwe, who was declared missing in 2003, 'was found in a large cupboard inside a shrine in a private room in a circumstance depicting ritual practice.'

The police believe the retired educationist and devotee of the Guru Maharaji sect, killed his mother for ritual purposes. Dr. Chimezie Osuigwe is being held for first degree murder.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board , JAMB has been given a 7-day-ultimatum, by an education consultant, Mr Oludotun Shodunke, who had asked the board to release the last UTME candidates’ exam scripts for remarking or face court action.

Sodunke alleged that the examination body failed many candidates because it was rumoured that the examination questions leaked. The education guru, who led some candidates to protest the unjustified mass failure, had queried that the examination management board, led by Prof. Dibu Ojerinde failed in the conduct of the examination.

He therefore noted that the right thing to have done after the body had learnt of the leaked papers was to cancel the exercise and fixed another day for it.
In his words,
“You can not punish students with what I call monumental failure because the examination paper leaked. Leakage of examination paper cannot be blamed on the students.”

It would be recalled that the last UTME examination result released recently showed that over 80% of the total number of student who sat for the examination failed woefully.

Troops capture Boko Haram’s camp in Borno

EARLY reports of military operations in the three North-East states under emergency rule, on Thursday, indicated that Nigerian soldiers had recaptured three of the local government areas where insurgents had been in control in northern Borno.

The names of the recaptured councils could not be confirmed out of the lot in possession of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram. The areas where the insurgents were said to have been in total control before the military operation launched on Thursday were Marte, Magumeri, Mobbar, Gubio, Guzamala, Abadamin, Kukawa, Kaga, Nganzai and Monguno.

Also, the troops reportedly invaded and took over a training camp of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, known as Sambisa on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, in the early hours of Thursday.

Borno as well as Adamawa and Yobe states fell under emergency rule by presidential proclamation on Tuesday.

President Goodluck Jonathan said all efforts to bring the violence in the area under control had failed hence the need to use force to force insurgents out of the states, especially Borno where the President said insurgents had taken control of the northern part.

A soldier who spoke to one of our correspondents from Maiduguri, on the condition of anonymity, said, “We have succeeded in taking over Sambisa Games Reserve, which the sect had been using as its camp. Scores of people found in the camp were arrested.

“We will interrogate them and those who are not members of the sect will be set free. The operation is being carried out in such a way that there is no harassment. The innocent should not be afraid.”

The source however declined to comment on the number of casualties already recorded and the number of persons arrested.

The PUNCH learnt that troops on Thursday shut down almost half of the state as they attacked suspected Boko Haram enclaves.

A man who spoke to one of our correspondents on the telephone from Maiduguri narrated that the military operation in the city had disrupted normal life.

He said the number of roadblocks had increased and that “farmers are no longer going to the farm, only a few traders are venturing out to the market.

“Shop owners who sell provisions are finding it difficult to replenish their stock.”

The source further explained that even residents of Maiduguri, considered safe were living in fear.

This, he explained, was because they feared that the insurgents could sneak into town. The Boko Haram insurgency began in Maiduguri in 2009 and Borno State is seen as the operational base of the sect that has killed at least 2,500 persons in attacks on military and police facilities, drinking joints, worship houses and markets.

Director of Defence Information, Brig.- Gen. Chris Olukolade, said in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents that more troops had been deployed in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

He declined to comment on the number of troops that were billed to participate in the major military operations planned to flush out the insurgents from the area.

Olukolade said that it was not strategic to disclose the number of soldiers or security personnel that would be used for the operation.

“All I can say is that more soldiers have been deployed today; that I can confirm to you. On the issue of the numbers that are being quoted, they are not from the DHQ. We are not quoting any number.

“The operation is continuing satisfactorily. Details will be made available to the public at the appropriate time.”

Another source in the besieged area said, “We now have more soldiers and weapons than I have ever seen in my life. Although some of them are moving towards the north, some are remaining here in Maiduguri.

“I have no idea what is going on in places like Bama, Marte, Magumeri, and Monguno where the Boko Haram people have taken control of some towns and villages. But movement in-and-out of these areas has been restricted.”

The Nigerian Army on Thursday announced an indefinite dusk-to-dawn curfew in Adamawa State.

Public Relations Officer of 23rd Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Yola, Lt. Ja’afaru Nuhu, in a statement on Thursday said the curfew would be between 6 pm and 6 am until further notice.

He said, “Sequel to the Presidential declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan, a 6pm to 6am curfew has been imposed on Adamawa State.

“All law-abiding citizens are advised to abide by the curfew,” the statement said.

There are reports that business and other activities are going on as usual in Yola in spite of the heavy deployment of soldiers and policemen in strategic places.

The BBC reports on Thursday indicated that mobile phone networks were not functioning in many parts of North-East states, though the reporter said it was not clear if the situation was related to the current military offensive.

The insurgents had previously attacked mobile phone masts in the area in an effort to disrupt communications.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Inuwa Bwala, and the Director of Press, Mallam Isa Gusau, could not be reached as of the time of this report.

4 persons confirmed dead in building collapse in Umuahia

Earlier today we brought you a report of a collapse building in UMUAHIA. Report has it that FOUR persons have been confirmed dead after a building under construction collapsed in Agbama Housing Estate, Umuahia, Abia state capital.

Four other persons sustained various degrees of injury and are now receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
The identity of the victims was not ascertained as at press time. However, unconfirmed information pieced together from some residents claimed that a family of four was involved.
The incident occurred Wednesday night at about 8 o’clock which threw the entire Umuahia city into confusion as no such a thing has ever happened here before.

The reason for the collapse of the building is still not clear but residents alleged that the owner was trying to extend the building originally designed for one storey to three stories without proper reinforcement.
The collapsed structure was said to belong to popular building materials merchant in the city.

40 prisoners Release in Katsina State

Over 35 prison inmate convicted for minor offences have been free by the Committee on Prison Inmates Rehabilitation in Katsina State.
The Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Abubakar Bindawa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the end of the committee’s visit to Musawa Prison that the committee visited 12 prisons.

Alhaji Abubakar Bindawa said that a pregnant woman was among those freed, adding that each of the inmates was given N10,000 to embark on small-scale businesses. He said the gesture was to enable the ex-prisoners reunite with their family members and become decent citizens.

According to him, government has designed a programme where the freed inmates will be enrolled on empowerment schemes.
He called on the freed prisoners to shun vices and engage in viable ventures that would uplift their living standards.
Bindawa who is also the Special Adviser to the Katsina State Governor on Community Development, explained that the initiative would complement the Federal Government’s prison de-congesion programme.
He said that the former prisoners would also benefit from the N443 million earmarked for poverty alleviation by the State Government.

The Transition Committee Chairman of Musawa Local Government Council, Alhaji Tanimu Kira, commended Gov. Ibrahim Shema for the initiative.
One of the freed inmates, Danlami Bature, convicted for theft and sentenced to four months imprisonment with an option of fine, promised not to go back to crime.

The committee also visited satellite prisons in Musawa and Malumfashi Local Government Areas. (NAN)

This to inform all student that sat for CBT exams in JAMB , that Jamb has finalized all procedures required for the conduct of the Computer Based Test (CBT) version of the 2013 UTME.

The exam, which is expected to begin as from 18th May, 2013. All CBT candidates are expected to reprint their slips if their current photocard does not reflect a date between 18th May and 1st June.

How do i reprint your slip,
1. Click here to access the JAMB Portal.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and insert your JAMB reg. No in the section saying Reprint Slip and click "re-print".

All CBT candidates to have been able to identify their centers by now and have got the faster route to the centre because we expect you to be there by 7am, at least to interact with other peers.

The CBT exam is expected to involve the full use of a computer system to view the questions and submit answers in a time based format.

According to JAMB, candidates will receive their scores on their mobile phones almost immediately they depart the examination centre.

Just be confident and go for it, you will be appropriately guided by the JAMB official on that day. Please don't be scared to ask the officials questions when you are not clear about anything. You only have one chance to make your admission this year and this is it. Take it!

The wife of the iconic African pop star, Annie Macaulay Idibia has opened up on why Tuface Idibia begged her to marry him.

In a revealing interview she granted Jara, a TV programme on Africa Magic channel on DSTV, the singer’s wife reconstructed the scenario of how Tuface proposed to her and why he chose her among the other women in his life.
In her words:

“He called me up one morning that I should meet him in Lagos so that we can hang out. He said his friends are around and they want to take us out. So, I agreed to see him. I remember it was a particular friend of ours that was around that day, although I would not like to mention his name.

“And when I got to Lagos that day, he was like ‘let’s go to the club.’ When we got to the club, the place was totally empty. Obviously confused, I asked him, “baby, what are we doing here, it’s empty” and before I turned back, my brothers and friends showed up. I was so perplexed that I had to ask what everybody was doing around there and they said they heard we were there and they came.

“Just about few minutes after, Tuface picked up the microphone and I thought he was going to do all the normal hypes he does when he goes to the club. But he shocked me. He started saying things about how I have always been there for him since day one. How I have sacrificed alot for him. How I have cried and stood strong during his trying moments.

The truth is, he said so many things I can’t remember now. He said so many wonderful things that sent me into another world and I couldn’t even hear the other things he said.

“I didn’t even know when he walked up to me and he said “Please, will you marry me?” And I was like, “Can you imagine? What’s going on here?” he was saying so many things that I can’t even remember. It all blew my head.

“Although, it has not been easy since we had our traditional marriage. The truth is, it is not easy to be married to a superstar but I still live my normal life.
Right now, I feel 24 hours is not enough for me because I have my husband, my daughter and myself to take care of. It has really been crazy and God knows I have been trying my best. I wish I have more time to handle all of this.

“Just because of the lack of time, I haven’t been able do my normal acting jobs. I would still go on to do it soon because my husband is very supportive of my career and everything I do.
As a married woman, I would be more selective with the roles I take now. I would do away from controversial roles but that doesn’t mean if I see a good storyline I wouldn’t do it.

“One of the reasons I would be careful with the roles I take up now is because I am married. And when you are married you have to be able to manage your career such that it won’t affect your home front.
In any case, you need to learn some tips which will help you carry on in the marriage. But before that, you need to be sure that the man loves you as much as you love him.

Even if it is not as much as you love him, but be sure he loves you. You also need to be patient. Men are like babies and babies are very annoying. You need to scold them but you should pamper them more. You need to work on yourself so that you can be proud of yourself. Don’t fake anything.

“Very soon, Tuface and I plan to do our white wedding and you will all be invited and even though it will be something quiet. We don’t want to make too much noise about it. We just want a beautiful and memorable event.”
