When making your morning smoothie, it’s not enough that it’s pretty and fruity- Make sure it ticks all the nutritional boxes.

How to build a better smoothie

Base

A simple, nutrient dense, easy to digest smoothie starts off with a good base base.

Liquid – Water or unsweetened nut milks. (I personally prefer the milks for consistency and flavor)

Ensure you have a good quality protein. I prefer protein powder, but you can also use use yogurt or kefir. (If your body does well with dairy).

Avoid large quantities of sugar, specifically fructose sugar from excess fruit. Keep fruit to one serving.

Throw in some healthy fats to keep you full and satisfied. Coconut oil, nut butters, flax oil, and MCT oil are all great to add in a smoothie.

Boosters

To build upon with other ingredients.

Add your mix-ins or boosters- more fiber (chia or flax seeds), greens, spirulina, turmeric, cacao, bee pollen, maca etc.

Cheers to balanced blending!

Working out is hard— before you hit the gym.

Even if you have the best intentions, they may not be enough to get you out to bed an hour earlier or off the couch and away from Netflix. The truth is that you won’t be motivated every day. There will be times when you are super pumped and others times you’ll need to work harder to get going; so don’t beat yourself up over it.

The most important thing is to get real with yourself. Are you missing a session once in a while, or are you skipping your workouts regularly?

If you need a little boost to get moving, try some of these ways to get you (and keep you) motivated.

1. Stop Making exercise about how you want to look

When exercise is only about the way you look, more often than not, you end up just giving up. Aesthetic goals will only take you so far. The way you look at exercise is really the key to staying motivated long term.

Shift your perspective from I have to workout to lift my butt, get flatter abs, build better arms, work off that piece of cake… to I deserve this workout. Commit to moving your body because you feel awesome and energized when you do. Because love your body, not because you want to change it.

2. Do something you enjoy

Yes. Exercise can be and should be something you look forward to. If you hate running, don’t sign up for a race in the hopes of forcing yourself to train for it. You will be bored out of your mind and you won’t stick to it. Find activities you like and actually want to do.

And don’t be afraid to spice it up. If you never change your routine, you will hit a plateau and stop getting results. Talk about demotivating.

3. Cut the crap.

I don’t have time to exercise. We’ve all said this as at some point.

But here’s the deal– you’ll never get everything done. There will ALWAYS be more work that you can finish. More emails to send, more laundry to fold, more taking care of others that you can do.

Now, I know sometimes our schedules can get crazy, but we always have time for things we consider a priority. So the next time you find yourself not being able to fit in workouts on the reg. –try this exercise.

And if you need some quick do anywhere workouts that you can fit in anytime, try this 300 Rep workout, or this HIIT workout.

4. Understand your habit loop.

If you find yourself consistently skipping your workouts, it’s time to look a little deeper at why this has become a habit. In his book, The Power of Habit, author Charles Duhigg explains how our habits are responsible for most of what we do. And to change a habit, we need to understand the entire process.

He explains this cycle as The Habit Loop.

The Trigger: the event that starts the habit.
The Routine: the habit itself.
The Reward: the benefit or pay off you receive the from the routine.

To understand your own habits, you need to identify the factors of your loops. Once you have figured out your habit loop around exercise, you can look for ways to create a new routine.

5. Plan it out.

Sit down with your schedule at the beginning of every week. Where can you fit in your workouts? Write it down. Treat it as you would any other appointment. Show up. This may not seem as urgent as other commitments in your calendar, but it is. The commitments we make to ourselves matter.

6. Be social

Turn your social calendar into active + social. Have a regular Saturday morning coffee date with your friends-Why not a yoga + coffee date? Signup for dance classes with your significant other, learn to ski, or go hiking with your family. Making exercise fun can change the way you look and health and fitness. (Which brings us back to point number 1).

In the comments below, I’d love for you to share how you stay motivated.

Have a great weekend!

As a coach and nutritionist I often get asked many questions regarding health and wellness almost everywhere I go.

I also get random people at parties and networking events giving me a detailed breakdown of what they eat and their current exercise plan…But we’ll save those stories for another time.

Since many of the questions I get are the same, I thought I’d answer the most common questions I get asked. That being said, I don’t like to make generalizations. Everyone’s physical, emotional and nutritional needs are very different. And there is so much to consider like your hormones, digestion, activity level, stress levels, dietary restrictions and food preferences.

I’ve put together what seems to be the 4 most burning questions people have regarding health and wellness, and answer them in a way I believe to be the most beneficial for the largest amount of people.

Here we go.

How many calories should I eat?

We’ve been fed a lot of food lies and this is one of the biggest ones- All calories are created equal. In my opinion, calorie counting is a waste of time. First of all, the quality of your food and calories is über important! Focusing on calories ignores the fact that all foods, when broken down into macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fats) are metabolized and used differently. And more importantly, each macronutrient will have a different effect on your hormones.

And most people counting calories, are not eating enough healthy fat, which is essential for health. Fat keeps you fuller longer which can help curb your cravings, improves your metabolism, makes your skin glow, and helps your body absorb other nutrients- specifically A, D. E and K.

Should I focus on Cardio or Strength training to lose fat?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked this question from new clients or people I meet at a dinner party- especially women. And you know what, I’m not surprised. There is so much conflicting information and we’ve be told for so long that calories in vs calories out is the most important equation when it comes to fat loss. As we’ve been fed the calorie myth, we have also been fed the cardio myth.

The secret to fat loss is being consistent with resistance training and maintaining blood sugar balance. More muscle mass boosts your metabolism -so the more you lift the more fat you can burn.

Also, if you’re slaving away on the treadmill all day and starving yourself, you’re body isn’t going to have the fuel it needs to build muscle. This is also a recipe for destroying your hormones and increasing stress. Not to mention, you’ll probably feel like shit and will not be consistent with your exercise plan.

Before you start emailing and tweeting me about what I just said, I’m not saying you should never do any. Cardio, in the right quantities and at the right intensity can help with fat loss. But there is a big difference between a 20-minute HIIT session a few times a week, a de-stressing hike or bike ride, and doing back to back spin classes or getting on that treadmill everyday for an hour.

What are your kitchen staples?

I love food and trying new recipes, and I try to eat in season as often as possible-higher in nutrients and easier on the wallet; so what’s in my fridge and pantry changes often. But there are a few things that I always have in my kitchen no matter what.

Coconut Oil – I add it to my smoothies, add it to oatmeal, bake and cook with it.
Leafy Greens – Kale, spinach, chard, collard, arugula (whatever I could find or am in the mood for that week). In a salad, sautéed, in smoothies or juiced. They are inexpensive and back a serious nutritional punch.
Lemons – For everything. I add it to water, salad dressing, fish. It makes everything takes better.
Avocados – Again, For everything. In my smoothies, in my salad, on toast, as a salad dressing, or with a squeeze of lemon and salt and eat it with a spoon.
Raw nuts – A quick and easy snack and I can take them anywhere.

I don’t have enough time, what can I do?

This is probably the number one question I get asked. (Technically, it’s part question and part excuse.)

Here’s the deal-you’ll never get everything done. There will ALWAYS be more work that you can finish. More emails to send, more laundry to fold, more taking care of others that you can do. (I’m talking to you mamas!) But, making small shifts everyday that help you create a healthier balance, is possible.

What makes this question so difficult to answer is that it’s usually not about the tips and tricks I teach my clients. That’s part of it, but there is usually something deeper.

To better answer this question please take a look at these two posts:

How to create more balance. You can find it here.

How to practice self-care. You can find it here.

In the comments below, I’d love for you to share the biggest action step you’ll take from these answers.

About a month ago, a woman posted a tweet regarding her boss’ response to taking a mental health day.

The employee, who suffers from depression and anxiety, sent an email to her team saying she’d be off for two days to focus on her mental health. Her boss replied to her email thanking her for being open and honest and how important it is to take care of all areas of our health. Since she posted the response on social media in June, it has been retweeted nearly 15,000 times and has sparked a lot of conversation.

This got me this got me thinking about how we approach mental health in our society. It still isn’t something that we discuss openly or feel comfortable asking time off for, the way we would a sprained ankle or the flu. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, make choices and relate to others. Wellness is about more than just green juice and super foods It’s about taking care of our body AND mind.

Whether you suffer from anxiety or not, The truth is we ALL need a break at one point or another. Now I know you’re probably saying to yourself, “That’s great Ana but, I can’t take time off.” I get it. Everyone works and has responsibilities.

But if you find yourself relating to many of the situations below, it’s a warning that you may be on the road to burnout.

1. You feel overwhelmed. Does this sound familiar? You get to work, sit down at your desk, look at your to-do list and inbox and either want to yell at someone or start crying. Feeling overwhelmed for me, is one of the first majors signs that it’s time to take a break.

2. You’re sick often. “Pushing through” chronic stress and depending on adrenaline can keep you going for a while, but eventually you will crash. Your immune system breaks down making you more susceptible to getting sick.

3. You’re super cranky. You are constantly going off on people for no real reason. The normal stuff of your friends, family and coworkers starts to piss you off more than usual.

4. You’re tired all the time. If simply the thought of walking into work and turning on your computer, or “What the F am I going to cook for dinner tonight?!” makes you want tot find the closest close and take a nap, then you probably need to rest up a bit. (If you need a few easy tips on how to increase your energy click here and here).

5. You can’t focus. Do you look at your computer screen and everything is basically a blur? Being able to focus is important if you really want to get shit done. Period. And if you’re having trouble focusing then you’re probably not doing your best work.

6. Distracted eating. You eat the majority of meals in front of a computer, television, while texting or in your car.

7. Your self care has gone out the window. You start making excuses for not going to yoga, the gym or your regular walks. Maybe you’ve been eating foods you know make you feel bad but they’re quick and easy. Or you haven’t been to the hair dresser in a few months and you’ve missed the last few dinners with girl friends.

If you find yourself checking off a few of these examples, it’s time to take a break.

In the comments I’d love to know how you recharge when your body and mind ask for it.

Sincerely,
Ana xo

I have a brand new recipe for you.

It’s one of my faves, and I make it a lot. It’s delicious, filling and packs a serious nutritional punch.

One the reasons this recipe is so good for you is the cauliflower. This vegetable is considered by many of us the health and wellness field, to be one of the healthiest foods on earth.

Why is it so good for you?

Cauliflower is in the cruciferious vegetable family -which also includes broccoli, cabbage, kale, mustard greens, collard greens and brussels sprouts. These foods are rich in glucosinolates (sulfur-containing compounds). Glucosinolates are broken down into into active compounds called indole-3-carbinol. Studies have shown that these compounds are anti-inflammatory and fight oxidative stress.

Other wonderful benefits of cauliflower include:

High in fibre

Excellent source of vitamin C

Good source of vitamin K

Help balance hormones by reducing unhealthy levels of estrogen

High in choline- important for liver function and maintaining a healthy metabolism

Incredibly versatile ingredient (you can use it as a substitute for rice and mashed potatoes in many dishes

So here’s a paleo, vegan, anti-inflammatory, cancer fighting, high fibre, nutrient dense and delish recipe.

Most of us sets goals, intentions or try to create new habits at some point during the year.

But very few of us achieve them. Why?

It’s so easy to slip back into old habits or to go into our “yeah buts”. Staying motivated and connected everyday is the tough part. This is the most difficult step I see when I work with my clients, and the most difficult part for myself too. The big goals are more fun for most of us. But the day to day is the less sexy part.

Here are some steps to getting unstuck and making decisions that move you forward in your life-getting you closer to your goals.

1. Are they really yours? One of the biggest challenges in staying motivated and sticking to our goals is making sure that the goals we set are the ones we really want. Sometimes we set goals based on what we think we ‘should’ do, or what other people say we should do. Check in regularly and see if it still resonates with you.

2. Visualize yourself achieving the end result. Studies show that visualizing an action stimulates the same brain regions as when we are actually performing that same action. Athletes who practice this technique (picturing themselves crossing the finish line or executing a perfect routine) performed the best at the Olympics. Even better than the athletes who did more physical training.

3. Find your positive peeps. Having people in your life who are positive and who can engage in conversations about your goals or other things that you are passionate about, can really lift you up. It’s also important to address situations where people may be sabotaging your success. For example, if you are trying to change your lifestyle and your friend is always “gently convincing” you that one drink or one order of fries won’t do anything, it may be wise to take a break from them for a bit.

4. Create your stop doing list. Our lives have gotten cluttered with all of the “shoulds”, that often we may have a difficult time figuring out what we want to do or what we really need to do. Here are some things you can stop doing now, that can have a big impact on your life.

5. Get Real with yourself. It’s easy for us to blame a lack of success in different ares of our lives on external circumstances. But the truth is, it’s usually something inside of you that is holding you back. Fear, lack of confidence or even fear of success holds most of us back. Practice digging deeper and taking a look inwards to see what’s really holding you back. Marianne Williamson has an amazing quote on the fear of stepping into our light.

6. Practice being still. Take a few minutes a day to simply focus on your breath and quiet your mind. Being still creates the space for deep listening. It allows you to hear the truth and clarity that is normally muted by mental noise and external busyness.

When I first start working with a private client, I always ask them with their goal is. What they would like to achieve by working with me.

And if I’m working with them on creating a stronger and healthier body, more often than not I get an answer like this, “I want to look like Gisele Bündchen, Gwyneth Paltrow or (insert another celebrity name here)”.

To which I reply, “Well I don’t think you can achieve that by working with me. But you can try writing a letter to God for some sort of incarnation or miracle and see if he replies”. After the shock wears off from my direct answer, there is usually some laughter. They realize that my answer was ridiculous because their goal was- you can only have one body. Your body. You can be the best you can be, but achieving someone else’s body is impossible. And comparing yourself to someone else leads to nothing positive.

Constantly comparing ourselves to others and wishing we were more like them is quite common. And it doesn’t only happen with body image. Maybe you compare your career to someone else’s who seems to have a better or bigger one. Or your relationships, friendships, bank account and even your wardrobe. Or even worse, all of it!

I’ve certainly fallen into this trap of comparing myself to other people before. And from time to time I find myself getting sucked back in to that same old story again. It’s easy to do.

It can start off by looking at someone we admire, or who we are inspired by. And next thing you know, you are thinking …. “They are so successful and my career sucks. She has the perfect body and I don’t. Why don’t I have my shit together like they do?” And we begin to think that our path isn’t good enough and their path must be the right one.

So why do we do this to ourselves? Why is it so easy to compare ourselves to others?

I think sometimes we do it because we’re looking to see if what we are doing is right; looking for some kind of feedback. Sometimes we do it because we want to compare ourselves to someone who maybe, in our minds at that moment, isn’t doing as well as us -and we want to feel good. And a lot of the times we do it because we’re feeling crappy. We feel bad about ourselves and we want to validate those sabotaging thoughts.

Whatever the reason is. It ain’t good for us. It really doesn’t serve us in any way.

Because focusing our energy on somebody else’s path only takes us away from our own.
Tweet it!

So this week, I want you to challenge yourself to focus on your journey, and your journey only.

Here are 3 ways to help you out when you get stuck.

1. Gratitude. Often when we’re comparing ourselves to others, we are so focused on what they’ve got, and we are not appreciating all the awesome stuff we have in our own lives. So if you find yourself starting to enter comparison mode, stop and write down 10 things you’re grateful for in your life right now.

2. Realize that you actually kick ass! That there’s only one of you, and you’re pretty awesome. I know this is a hard one to do. But here’s a trick I use myself. Around 15 years ago I was given some Brian Tracey CDs to listen to. One of the exercises on these CDs was, when you’re feeling down, go to a mirror and repeat “I like myself. I like myself”. When I first tried this I felt totally nuts- I’d never heard of affirmations. But I did realize after a few repetitions, it is impossible not to smile and feel good. Seriously. It may sound like a lot of woo woo crap, but there is some science behind why they work.

3. Honour your journey. There is no perfect or correct time to achieve your goals. Comparing your career to someone who has been working in your industry for 2 years longer, or your body to someone who has been fit for 3 years and you’re just starting to make some healthy changes is silly. You are you. And you are where you are. If you find yourself getting sucked back in to the comparison game, stop and write a list some of your biggest achievements or moments in your life where you felt strong and at your best.
I’d love to hear from you. In the comments below, I’d love for you to share an area in your life you are committed to stop the comparison game.

As always, thank you for reading.

Un abrazo,

Ana
