My mom always would say, “If it’s free you take it!” so take her advice and grab this report.

Hmmm, that must explain why I always find jelly packets from coffee shops in Mom’s fridge… but let’s save that story for another day.

Enjoy!

We all know that people do business with those they know, like, and trust… but how does this translate in the rapidly accelerating world of social networking?

With so many sites to keep up on and thousands of new names in our networks, it’s no surprise that people are struggling with the concept.

If developing trust leads to revenues, then NOT developing trust costs you money. How much more simpler can it be?

Navigate your visibility the right way. Here are 5 things you can focus on to build trust and attract pre-sold, ready to buy clients:

1. Make Your Profile Shine

Your social networking profile is your calling card, your handshake, and your eye contact all rolled into one. I say that over and over, but it bears repeating. If people can’t figure out who you are, what you do, and how they can get more information on you, then that’s a lost opportunity. Get “Does Your Social Networking Profile Pass the 10 Second Test” to get tips and examples on transforming your social media profile.

2. Provide Top Notch Content

Social media is all about content: relevant, pertinent, informative content. Prove yourself to the world with great articles, videos, audio, links to blogs, etc.

3. Be Real

You don’t have to always be “on” to attract clients and followers. In fact your followers will be relieved to know that you’re human too when they witness how you deal with the little calamities of life.

I’m talking to you success coaches, million dollar mentors, manifesters, positive thinkers, law of attraction devotees, life coaches, etc. You can break a nail every now and then and Tweet about it- it actually helps us trust and understand you more when we find out that life happens to you too.

4. Be Gracious

Acknowledge the people in your network for what they’re doing. Retweet someone else’s great content and give shouts of gratitude when someone retweets your posts. Like in life, gratitude activates a landslide of blessings.

5. Think Win-Win

Think “generosity” as you peruse the Facebook live stream. Does a picture, note, video or status update catch your eye? Then comment! It’s a win-win and you both get a visibility push. Post other people’s notes or videos to your profile page, link to them on Twitter… come in with a generous mindset.

There are many more things to add to this list, but wanted to spotlight 5 key points.

What would you add to my list? Drop a comment below.

I’m posting today to ask you to share any stories of people you’ve followed on social media sites who turned out lacking in truthfulness about themselves, their business, or their experience.

No names or defaming (fyi, i can edit all comments so if you put something mean or nasty I’ll clip that out) but just truths that can help everyone out there understand the importance of leading with honesty and integrity.

I’ll post again asking about the great examples of credibility, but let’s start with the “what not to do” list first.

“Back when I was a kid, we had to walk 5 miles in the snow to get famous… now all you have to do is get a zillion Twitter followers and you’re a superstar.”

Social media has made getting famous much easier, but does fame equal credibility?

Of course you want a high level of visibility to get your message out and attract opportunities, but you MUST have a trail of proof that you are who you say you are, and you know what you say you know.

That’s called CREDIBILITY.

When I meet someone new on Twitter or Facebook, or if they send me a reply to something I posted, I click over to their profile. Even though I’m very intuitive, I often do a quick check to learn more. Here is a list of what I immediately check out:

1. Bio

The online bio is, in my opinion, the equivalent of a personal greeting. It’s your handshake, eye contact, and introduction all rolled into one. On Twitter you get to do this in 160 characters max. In a matter of seconds, you need to make it clear to me who you are, why you’re there, and why I should be interested.

If the reasons are too personal or you sound like a psycho windbag, I’ll unfriend. I personally like a bit of cleverness in a bio, but most importantly that your business and expertise are well communicated. (I did a webinar on this, you can get a copy here to learn how to write a bio for your social networking pages)

2. Picture

No, I’m not shallow and using looks to judge people. I’m looking to see if this is a real person or not. A credible person wouldn’t hide behind a logo. I know a lot of peeps are using cartoon avatars and I think those are fine for anonymous message boards… but if you’re representing your business it does come across as if you’re hiding something. That’s a strike against your credibility. (I’m hoping some of you cartoon avatar friends are reading this!)

3. A Real Link to a Real Webpage for a Real Business

This is the deal breaker. If I’m checking someone out and there is no valid web page where I can learn more (a link to a blog, a website, etc) then that’s a big credibility crusher. On Twitter, if a person’s URL links me back to their Twitter profile then that definitely causes reason for concern, beside make me feel like I’m stuck in a revolving door with no escape. (Click here to read more about creating a social networking landing page)

Those are my initial credibility scans. If I want to check someone out even more, I’ll do a Google search on their name and look for more information.

How do you check for credibility? What are you deal breakers?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could wake up everyday and face your social networking with a sense of clarity, integrity, and authenticity? You know what I mean: never feeling like you’re shouting to be heard or acting out for attention.

It’s interesting how regressive some otherwise nice people can get when pushed into the big sea of being visible on Facebook and Twitter. It’s like all confidence in the power of their message gets lost as they rely on pushy tactics to try to turn a fast buck.

Let me share a not-so-big secret with you: nobody’s interested in the pitches. As soon as someone senses a pitch coming at them, the walls go up and the bridge is closed.

We buy from people we know, like, and trust. That’s age-old wisdom and it’s just as true today as it was in the 50’s when my Dad opened up his first mom and pop business.

Then what is everyone out there looking for?

They’re looking to connect. They’re looking for value. They’re looking for honesty.

As an entrepreneur using social networking to market your business, you need to keep that in mind. So that leads up to the Magic Question for social media success.

Each day when you get ready to hop onto Twitter or scour Facebook for prospects, ask yourself this question:

How can I add value to my network?

What can I give that will inform, engage, connect, and build trust?

That’s it.

When you take that mindset on, the need to push or coerce vanishes. The value you provide- whether it’s retweeting someone’s post or offering your professional opinion- will set you apart as a credible person to be connected to.

There are other components of social media success, but having a value mindset is the foundation.

This focus on providing value is what takes a person from random observer to raving fan to hot hot lead to ready-to-buy prospect.

So take a moment right now and ask yourself that magic question:

What can I do to add value to my network?

Then go over to Facebook or Twitter or Linked In and see how that question guides your actions.

I’d love to know your success stories or mindset shifts. Drop me a comment below.
