Even though I am a teacher, I have not woken up so early in a long time. At 5am, my body is still in the last stages of REM sleep before my alarms sounds at 6am (or sometimes even 7am). However, there is a lot today, and I am held hostage to the MTA schedule of buses and subways this morning. Let's see how it goes!

I missed the finals game because I was on the road. When I caught the USA vs. Brazil game, I was disappointed it came down to a shoot out. Once again, the finals game came down to a shoot out as well. Thank goodness the men's finals did not come to that last year in South Africa. Nevertheless, congratulations to Japan for winning the women's world cup final in Germany. The pictures are available at NY Times.

Philadelphia appears to be fighting to be declared a green city:

Last year, it installed solar powered Big-Belly compact trash and recycling cans throughout the city. Before that, trash was usually thrown out in the street or in abandoned lots.
Philly recently rolled out its recycling rewards program, which pays residents to recycle. You know I am on it!
Starting this month, residents can recycle plastics #1 to #7! Most cities, including NYC, only accept plastics #1 and #2.

I love recycling (which includes dumpster diving)!

Jury Duty

I served my first jury duty today in Philadelphia. We started with a room of 400+ people, who were sub-divided into smaller groups of 30, 40, or 50. I regretfully joined a group of 30, as juror #8. I was fearful that they had to select 12 jurors (and 2 alternates) from this population for a criminal case. There was a lot of waiting in silence before the judge was ready for us. She made us all feel guilty about getting out of jury duty, comparing it to serving in the army. Luckily I was not selected, and released early at 2PM! Thankfully so, because I have a flight to LA next week. I was glad to see a real courtroom, and served my country today for a whooping $9.

The supermarket has gotten especially lazy. Rather than paying its employees to scan your merchandise at check out, it has invested in these devices where you scan the items as you walk around the store. Try out your dream job as a supermarket cashier at the Stop N' Shop at Flemington, NJ. *Beep*

1st Apple Store in Philly!

This past Friday was the opening of the first Apple store in Philadelphia. I found out that the tradition is to give out 1,000 shirts branded with the store location. Of course, I got there too late, but was greeted by the 50+ employees on hand. A former employee informed me that there are people who travel across the world collecting such shirts. One such individual has 120!
