Easy T-Shirt Pillow

After sifting through some old clothes the other day, I came across my husbands old t-shirt. The print on it was so fun, I knew I had to use it for something. So I decided to make it into a pillow for the kids playroom! The comfy jersey knit is the perfect fabric for kids play and the grey works great with the color scheme.

It was so easy, too. Here's how I did it.

I had an old pillow I used as a pillow form.

I laid the shirt out flat, then placed the pillow on top.

Using a felt marker, I traced around the pillow. I didn't worry about adding extra for seam allowance since jersey tends to stretch.

After cutting out the shape with my rotary cutter, I placed the right sides in and pinned around the perimeter.

I sewed all around the pillow, leaving one side open to slide the pillow form in.

Once the pillow was inside, I folded in the open edges of the pillow and pinned, like so.

Then, sewing slowly and carefully, I sewed it the opening shut. You could also hand sew it closed, but since it was a stretchy fabric, it worked great.

And that was it.

So comfy and fun!

Perfect for cuddling up to read some books.

Superhero Comic Muscle Tee

Now that summer's pretty much here, my boys like to cool off wearing muscle tees. Which is great because they sometimes sell them in sets of two (perfect when you have two boys to clothe). Sadly, they make one graphic, the other a tad boring. So instead of dealing with a fight, I decided to embellish one to make it just as fun!

See? Kinda boring for a fun little boy.

I had some leftover scrap fabric from my kids pj's.

So I cut out one of the comic squares with my rotary cutter and ruler.

Used some thermoweb on the back of the fabric.

Applied it to the shirt as directed.

Then quickly sewed around the perimeter to be sure it would stay put.

And that's it! So quick and easy.

How much cooler is that?

Now they just have to fight over this one.. Ha!

Floral Painted Tee

I'm a klutz. A big one. So when I got bleach on my brand new tee I honestly was not surprised. Sadly, this left me with a shirt I could no longer wear. But alas! The fabric paint! Here's how I fixed my accidentally bleached top to a new graphic floral tee.

Here's the before:

Check that out. The worst possible spot, right!?

To do this, all you need is a shirt, a stencil and brush and some fabric paint.

First, lay some cardboard between the layers of your shirt to prevent it from seeping through.

Get your paint and stencil ready.

Squirt a small blob of the fabric paint onto a dish or lid.

Using small dabs and a small amount of paint on your brush at time, apply the paint to your shirt.

Dab the backside of your stencil with a towel to prevent any runaway paint to get onto the shirt where you don't want it. That's if you are planning on moving the stencil around the shirt like I did.

After filling in as much as you'd like and once you're happy with it, lay the shirt flat to dry for at least 4 hours.

Once dry, try it on and admire! Yay for a new shirt!!

Hanging Flower Topiary

Now that my daughter is in her room downstairs, we're having fun adding special touches to it. She especially likes to be included in the colors, finishes and accessories. So when she insisted she wanted some flowers in her room, we headed to the dollar store to pick up some supplies and created something just for her. We had so much fun making her hanging flower topiary together. Here's how we did it.

Here's what you need to create your own hanging flower topiary: fake flowers (I used about 6 small bunches) hot glue gun and glue foam ball (we used one about 5 inches in size) ribbon

First off, remove all your flowers from their stems.

Push the flower tips into the styrofoam, like this, arranging them how you like.

Once you've placed one and have made a hole.

Add some hot glue to it and place the flower back on to adhere it.

Continue to glue and fill in until your ball is covered.

To have your topiary hanging, use a long piece of ribbon and a thumbtack.

Add some hot glue, place the end of the ribbon down and the thumbtack on top. You may not need the the thumbtack, but I found the tack seemed to adhere the ribbon to the foam ball better.

Now you are finished!

We hung her flower topiary with some hanging butterflies we had leftover from her Pinkalicious party, remember that one?

She loves it and it looks completely sweet and girly in her room, just like her!

I'm in the midst of trying to finish decorating my boys' rooms. Now that they're in different rooms, I'm having so much fun creating their own spaces for them! But one that is difficult to find is decor that fits a boys room. So what does a crafter do when they can't find? They make!
Here's a bunch of awesome DIY decor to make a boys room a little more fun and unique.

Retro Red & Blue Party

I know, I know. It seems as though that's all I'm posting these days. Well, you'll have to just try and enjoy it because this was MY birthday. Another year, my friends.
And since I wanted it a little low key, I went with what I had and love. My kitchen is red, blue and white (correction: that's what my goal is for my kitchen). I have so much to do yet, but I still like to include those colors and items in my kitchen until I can tackle the big stuff. That aside, I love the retro look to the red and blue/cherries thing they had going on in the fifties. So I went for a little of that.
I used my existing red hutch and included some of my hobnail milkglass.

I tried to include the cherry flavor in my treats. Including some fresh cherries.

Yum! Cherry coke float cupcakes. Recipe found at Brown Eyed Baker.

Old fashioned cherry candy sticks, of course.

My favorite. Cherry tarts!

And White Chocolate Cherry Shortbread cookies. Recipe found at Closet Cooking.

Cherry gummies. One of my favorite candies!

I tried to keep within the retro theme and we had milkshakes, floats and fries for a diner feel.

Rosette Pillow

Ever since my daughter moved into her bedroom downstairs, I've been busy trying to get her new pieces together. Everything from artwork, to furniture, to spray painted projects.. and of course, pillows!

She really wanted something extra girly and special.

So a ruffly, rosette pillow it is.

I've been aching to use this fabric I found thrift shopping, so I knew it would be perfect for the pillow I wanted. Here's how to do it.

Cut strips 7 inches wide. You will need a lot of long pieces, so cut on the length of the fabric.

Now you have your long strips like this.

Since your pillow will be a circle, use something with a large circle shape to use as a stencil. I used my large drink bucket.

Trace and cut two circle shapes.

With your strips, fold and pin them widthwise with right sides facing out.

Use a serger or sew the edges together, then zigzag stitch them.

Then you can start ruffling your strips. Sew with the longest stitch at the highest number on your tension. Don't backstitch at the beginning and end. Then you can pull on the bottom threads to tighten your ruffles if needed.

Now you can start pinning the ruffled strips around the circumference of the circle shape. Start at about 2 inches inside from the outside so you'll have enough room to stitch your pillow together.

Keep pinning around, layering your strips like this.

Once you finish pinning on a strip, fold the end under and sew along that bottom edge of your strips. Like so.

Continue to pin, then sew until you've reached the center.

For the center of your rosette, use the remaining fabric strip and roll into a bud like this.

Then use a needle and thread to stitch the bottom of your bud together.

Now you'll need to hand stitch that bud to the center of your rosette. Once you are happy with how the center lays, you can finish off your pillow.

Lay the second circle shape over the top of your rosette, right side down.

Find the outer edges of each circle and pin together, pushing the ruffled strips between the circles.

Pin all the way around, leaving a 6 inch opening to flip it right side out.

Sew along the perimeter of your pillow, leaving the opening.

Flip it right side out and stuff your pillow with poly fill.

Then you can close up your pillow opening with a ladder stitch.

You are now done!

Place your pillow where you like and sit back and admire!

My daughter loves her new pillow. And I can't wait to get started on some more!

Football Themed 50th Birthday Party

How was everyone's weekend?

We've been getting some beautiful, summertime weather lately and it's such a nice change after that long winter. So we definitely enjoyed some sunshine.

As well as my mother-in-law's 50th birthday.

I offered to help with her party by putting together a dessert table and helping with some of the decorating.

She loves our football team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, so she really wanted to celebrate with some fun football and team inspired decor.

It was pretty fun putting it together, their colors are green and white and I added in a few football elements, too.

I created some custom made signage like these water bottle labels especially for her.

I used a simple tassel garland for the backdrop mainly because I liked how much it reminded me of pom poms.

I went with some of her favorites for the treats, such as jelly beans, gummy candies, popcorn, pistachios and cake pops.

Even my husband helped out by whipping her up a cake and making the popcorn.

These were the other signs I made for her. I went with some of the Roughrider logos and sayings. I changed the '100 years of pride' to 50 for her 50th, too.

Chocolate mints were a request, so we handed them out as party favors.

My husband also cut up an infamous watermelon helmet filled with fruit.

We also played a few games, a trivia game and also the football toss proudly made my husband once again!

The kids loved it!

And, of course, we were all to wear our 'rider gear'. So here's us in our shirts!

Recovered Lamp Shade (Using Ribbon Trim)

So apparently I didn't post this last week like I had planned. Yikes! Sorry guys.

Since I showed you all my lamp makeover last week, I thought I'd show you how I recovered the lamp shade, too! Here we go.
I had an old lampshade that I wanted to use for a shade anyways, but it was kinda cracked and looking a tad shabby. So I found some grey fabric for the shade and went to work.

I pressed all the wrinkles out first with an iron.

And removed all the trim around the existing shade to get rid of any unwanted bulk.

Since my shade is slightly tapered on the top, I laid my shade down with a few inches on the top. That way when I wrap it around it lays flat without puckering.

Using my hot glue gun, I glued the fabric end 1/2 inch along the edge like so.

Then I glued a small section at a time and just along the outer edges and laid the shade over the fabric to adhere it.

Once you're done one side, you can trim the excess fabric with your scissors. Since I finished mine with ribbon, I cut right to the edge. If I wanted to tuck the fabric under, I would cut it with an extra 1/2 inch of fabric.

Continue gluing small sections at a time, then laying the shade over the fabric, smoothing and tightening as you go.

When you get the end, cut it off leaving about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of fabric.

Then glue and fold a seam that lines up with the edge of your lamp shade.

So that when you glue down the finished edge, it lays evenly along that edge like this. Nice and clean.

Then I used my gray grosgrain ribbon for the edges as a trim.

The same way you glued the fabric around, add the ribbon.

Then once you've glued it along the entire edge, glue and fold the end to finish the seam.

Do both ends and that's it!

Add it to your lamp and you have a new, refreshing lamp shade!

Lamp Makeover

About a month ago I came upon this fun pineapple lamp. I've seen them around at other high end stores, but I really wasn't sold on spending up to 100 bucks on a lamp. So when I saw this I knew it was going to happen. That's right. Spray paint.

I wanted something simple since it was such a large lamp and I didn't need to add any boldness or whimsy to it as it is. I stuck with white and I love it so much more now!

Here's the end result.

I covered an old lampshade and added it to tie in with the other colors in the room. But the white base makes all the difference.

Camping Party

How was everyone's weekend? Ours was great. The weather was beautiful and we celebrated my husband's 29th birthday. Yep. 29. You know what comes next. Anyways, he's always been big into camping and the outdoors, so when I suggested it, he was all for it.

He decided on some favorites for the dessert table such as apple filled bush pies, vanilla cupcakes, gummy candy, beef jerky, and pudding dirt cups. And I had fun with the rustic and outdoorsy feel of the party.

I designed the invitation with the finishes that reminded us both of camping, the plaid, burlap, twine and of course, pine trees!

We added in a few fun elements of camping like the wood signage, the camping blanket table covering, and the wood log tiers.

Of course, you can't have a camping experience without some s'mores! Considering our winter was slow to leave this year and we still have a little snow on our yards, we figured an indoor s'more buffet would work better than using our outdoor fire pit.

And I made some homemade trail mix for everyone to take home.

Spray Painted Decor

As you all know me by now and I love a good spray painted makeover. And since I needed some fresh new pieces for spring I had to make them bright and bold!

After seeing colorful turtles for summer at Homesense, I had to nab this glass ornament from the local dollar store.

After some priming and a few coats of orange, he was just right for my livingroom!

Fun, right?

Then I found this steal at the thrift store and I knew I had to take it home.

How appropriate to paint a sun yellow?

Well, it was the perfect piece to update my gallery wall with! I love it!

Superhero Party Feature

My nephew just had his 6th birthday. And to celebrate my wonderfully talented sister at Candy & Cake whipped up an awesome superhero themed party just for him and his love for all the superheros! I always love a kids party and especially from my sister's amazing talent and creativity.

And the talent continues to her fantastic cakes, including this one!

What little boy wouldn't love these custom superhero sugar cookies that she made.

The bright, bold colors made for an exciting atmosphere.

And each child got to show up with their own costume! Talk about a fun time!! Here's the birthday (bat)boy!

Happy Friday! Happy Spring.. um.. not so much. Not sure who all is feelin' this lack of spring outside, but here we are still getting below zero temperatures (Celsius) and our yards are still full of snow. So instead of feeling blue, I figured some springtime printables might cheer us up!

Old Door To Headboard

So.. I'm back! I'm still trying to get into an order of things, but I'm going to try to blog regularly again. For all of you who haven't given up on me yet.. Hello again!! I missed you all! I really did. I missed blogging. I love to craft, and DIY and share it with you all. So I'm back. And I have SO much to show you!
Sadly, I have yet to prepare our basement space for pictures to show you. I really don't want to show you my space with piles of boxes or a messy toy room. So that's gonna have to wait. But what I do have for you is some projects from my kids new rooms. Now that my daughter has her brand spanking new bedroom in our basement.. that means the boys get their own room! YAY!! For all of you have twins.. or just kids who share rooms. You know what a relief this is. And excitement!!
The boys were so excited for new big beds and new paint and new bedding. As was I. I'm not quite ready to show you a reveal of any of the rooms yet.. but.. while putting together my sons room, we decided to make unique headboard out of something we already had.

We had a broken door from the basement finishing that we were ready to throw out.

Instead, we cut it apart and utilized the bottom portion for a new headboard! We already had some leftover crown molding from a past project and since my hubby's good with a skill saw, he pieced together the sides with some thin MDF scraps. (See. Even he can use up those scraps!)

After some quick priming, then a few coats of white paint, we had a new headboard!

I love how it turned out! And it fits perfectly in his new room.

I'm Still Here!

I'm still here everyone, I promise!
So our basement got completed.. then we started going through old bins and boxes.. Then, organization and decluttering took place. So now our basement is full of boxes we need to get rid of or sell. Sadly, that means pictures have to be put on the back burner. I know. I'm sad, too. I really wanted to give you all a reveal. Ah well. You'll have to be just a teensy bit more patient, as am I. But I am so very glad to be clearing out things are not needed. Kind of like early spring cleaning (since spring outside has not sprung).

Reupholstered Kitchen Chairs

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine asked me to do a project with her. She wanted to redo her kitchen chairs. Well. You know me. A DIY project? When do we start!!?

After a trip to the fabric store and to Home Depot for some spray paint... we changed these 80's dingy metal chairs..

Into these stylish and updated chairs!

Pretty fun, right?

Here's the before again.

All we had to do was unscrew the pieces from the metal.

Spray paint the frames.

And reupholster the cushions. The top pieces I took apart and used the existing pieces as a pattern on the new fabric (so a little sewing was involved). And the bottom pieces we simply stripped and recovered.

I love the fabric she chose. Gorgeous!

Such a difference! What do you think?

P.S. You guys totally got a little peak of our basement finishing project just now. Orange walls? Yes, I did. And guess what? We are soo close to the end... and then the projects can start flowing again. YAY!

Kids Skateboard Craft

As I said before, our basement is still being worked on (painting starts today!!), so my craft supplies are stored up... awaiting my return. Which I cannot wait for!

But that doesn't mean the kids crafts aren't happening.

With my daughter at school, it leaves a lot of time for me and my boys. And now that they're 3, crafting is a little easier and funner for them.

The boys like doing crafts, just not as much as my daughter, which is fine. So I figured I'd make it a little more enjoyable with some 'boy-friendly' ideas... like skateboards!!

Here's what you need:

white glue (or a stapler)

toilet paper/paper towel cardboard rolls

scissors

cardboard or sturdy paper

stickers, markers, embellishments of your choice

First off, make your 'wheels' by cutting your cardboard roll into 4 1-1/12" inch pieces.

Trace a skateboard shape on to your cardboard piece, like so.

Then cut it out.

Now for the fun part.. decorate it!

Once you're happy with your board decor, get your white glue ready.

And add 4 blobs for each wheel.

Press each one on and let it dry.

Ta-da! Skateboards!

Believe me, they loved them so much they wanted to try to ride them themselves.

A perfect craft for boys (and girls too!).

{Customer Party} Black & Gold 50th

Last weekend I was honored to plan a party for a 50th birthday.

Lots of black and gold and a bit of white. It was more of a traditional, classy, yet fun kind of party.

I thought I'd share some of the details of the party and the dessert table with all of you.

And, of course, my ever talented sister from Candy & Cake was hired to create the cake.

The addition of glitter gave things a little more of a fun feel.

The gift table was adorned with a tassel garland and included the sparkler favors for the guests.

Let Me Explain My Absence...

Sheesh!! Where have I been, right?? I've been missing you all these past two weeks, but I've been busy busy busy with everything. I was hired to plan a 50th birthday party which was last weekend and my daughter had her spring break this week, so we were having fun with lots of 'play dates' and her sudden interest in learning to read. Gosh, it's crazy how quickly kids grow! And our biggest project.. we're finally getting our basement finished!!! HOLLA! (Here's a few pics from my Instagram.)

We live in a bi-level home which means we basically have the same amount of space upstairs as we do downstairs. But for the past 3 years, we've been living with it unfinished. Which isn't entirely horrible.. but it will be such a blessing to enjoy it as a family finished!

SO. Get ready for some fun new bedroom, craft room/office and play room DIY's!!! I'm stinking excited, that is for sure!

Hope you didn't give up on my during my absence but considering my crafting room is in shambles, I'm unable to do any sewing or big projects with all my supplies in storage. It's so sad. But in another few weeks everything should be back up and running regularly again.. and that goes for my blog posts as well! So don't be alarmed, the projects have not ended!
