The Art of Rendering

fxguide’s Mike Seymor has a fantastic article online about the complexity of scene renderers. Not only does he get into the mathematics behind physical lighting effects like global illumination, sub-surface scattering, BRDF’s, and more, he goes in depth with several of the biggest packages out today to see where they excel.

Renderers are easy to write in the abstract, as perhaps a university project, but to work in production environments is extremely difficult. Arnold, by Solid Angle, is some 200,000 lines of highly optimized C++ code, and it is considered a very direct implementation without a lot of hacks or tricks. Production requirements in terms of rendertime and scene complexity are staggering. And the problem is not just contained to final render time, as Arnold founder Marcos Fajardo pointed out at Siggraph 2010 – final render CPU time might cost $0.10 per hour, but artist time is closer to $40 an hour, so interactivity is also vital.

More Kinect holograms from [programming4fun]

The Kinect continues to be not only a fun toy with the XBox, but an interesting research tool for spatial tracking. Another interesting project with it comes from “programming4fun” who merged it with a Windows phone for some interesting head-tracked fake holograms.

In addition to robotic avatars catering to your every wish, [programming4fun] also put together a rudimentary helicopter flight simulator controlled by tilting cell phone. It’s the same DirectX 9 heli from [programming]‘s original build. with the addition of Desert Strike-esque top-down graphics. This might be the future of gaming here, so we’ll keep our eyes out for similar head-tracking 3D builds.

NVIDIA Announces GK104 Based Tesla K10, GK110 Based Tesla K20

Details of the new Tesla K10 and K20 continue to come out, and the K10 is proving to be a bit different than anticipated. The new Tesla K10 is using the GK104 chip, available in the GeForce cards. This chipset lacks most of the usual Tesla features, and NVidia is getting around this by marketing it specifically to a narrow slice of the market:

NVIDIA’s market strategy here is actually summed up rather well in their K10 press release: “NVIDIA Tesla K10 GPU Accelerates Search for Oil and Gas Reserves, Signal and Image Processing for Defense Industry.” GK104 lacks the ECC and compute flexibility of the Fermi Tesla cards, but what it doesn’t lack is single-precision compute performance and memory bandwidth; and with a dual-GPU card in particular it has both of those in spades. Accordingly, NVIDIA’s goal for K10 is to go after the specific market segments that don’t need ECC and don’t need flexibility, but do need all the raw compute performance they can get. This as it turns out is something gamers are already familiar with: image processing.

NVidia announces new Kepler-based Tesla GPU’s: K10 and K20

I’m busy watching the NVidia GTC Keynote, but just got a press release too exciting not to share. I don’t think Jen-Hsun has said it yet, but this press release indicates that he’s about to announce new Kepler powered Tesla cards, the K10 and K20.

The NVIDIA Tesla K10 GPU delivers the world’s highest throughput for signal, image and seismic processing applications. Optimized for customers in oil and gas exploration and the defense industry, a single Tesla K10 accelerator board features two GK104 Kepler GPUs that deliver an aggregate performance of 4.58 teraflops of peak single-precision floating point and 320 GB per second memory bandwidth.

Samsung: we’re getting “huge” orders for flexible OLED panels

Flexible OLED displays are one of those fantastic technologies that is actually real, but never seems to show up anywhere besides trade shows. That may change if recent reports from Samsung are true, as they report “huge” orders from unnamed electric makers. They’re pretty vague on details, but do mention one well-named possible customer:

The same reports also suggest that Apple may be behind those “huge” orders. We do know that Apple is interested in flexible OLEDs, but it doesn’t seem likely that they are actually planning to start using these displays soon. In any case the first “flexible” OLEDs will probably not be really flexible. They will be plastic based though, which means that they are quite shutterproof, in addition to being thin and light. It will also be possible to fix them on curved surfaces.

NVidia Brings GPU IDE to Mac and Linux in Eclipse

This week is the NVidia GPU Technology Conference, and NVidia is kicking it off with a huge announcement of interest to anyone doing GPU development: the world’s first Eclipse-based Integrated Development Environment that supports Linux and MacOS development. For the last several years, Linux GPU programmers had to deal with basic commandline tools while the Windows world delighted in tools like Visual Studio and NSight. With this new development, CUDA and NVidia GPU programming is now on even (or at least closer to even) footing.

“Previously, debugging required dedicated systems that were often expensive and time consuming to configure,” said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at NVIDIA. “Now, any system with an NVIDIA GPU that supports debugging can be used without any additional cost or system upgrades, resulting in significant cost and time savings.”
