I'm back!!! Again..!! My HELSTROM Review- as well as a review of Marvel in general..

2020-10-17T20:09:00.001-04:00

Oh wow...

I'm back to the grind of sorts..

Did you miss me? Of course not..but as such I've returned to this corner of the web..to pontificate about the current state of comic book film and tv as well as the goings on in film media..

Its been a "dry" year in film and tv. No thanks to Covid-19, and its immediate aftermath thus the shutdowns of all film and tv productions as well as forcing some shows to cancel over it, (even though they won't admit that their respective shows were already in deep prior to the shutdown-see Supergirl)but now that some control has come back to most production houses, we have finally been able to watch something new from the planned reorganization of the Marvel/Disney/Hulu TV side of things.

Now before I get into the details, just so you know I'm a Marvel fan through and through. DC was never really my thing however I have always enjoyed the films growing up in the late 70s and 80s. That being said, I have much respect for those who have been the motivators in the film houses who get these projects going and are able to get them on the screen. These folks never really get the true respect of the fans or even their own companies but over time a few have managed to work their way up, from either the comic book side or the film side in order to shepherd their franchises.

Yes, you have your David Goyer or Kevin Feige or Jim Lee or even a Joss Whedon or Geoff Johns, but I want to talk about Jeph Loeb. But we will table that for the moment and get back to it.

Now having watched the whole season of Helstrom, I will say this: it was good.

Not great. Not exciting. Not scary.

Just good.

Was I expecting more? Yes. Much more.

I understand there are excuses abound right?

"We had to stop production" or "This is what we had to work with" etc etc..

Yes I appreciate the fact that they managed to put out a series that had been planned a year or so ago. But this was some low grade schlock. At some point you have to wonder "Is this actually a Marvel operation or a Fox operation?" No attention to any sort of detail from the books. No real writing connection to the films or previous shows(though i will admit the Jeph Loeb/Agents of Shield/Daredevil/Iron Fist production fingerprint is all over this mess), for example: a moment that could have have been played more comicly is the scene where Yen is in the tunnel with the Keeper's skull- as a viewer we know he's there but none of the acting or writing is explaining why he is there or what the situation is about. All we see at thend of one scene is the Keeper's eye popping out- that's all. We don't see or hear the conversation with the skull or understand what is going on thus this whole characterization that was building up around the Yen character from the first episode is thrown away. Later we learn he is now a Keeper- huh?? How did that happen? We have more flashbacks of Daimon and Ana's living situation then we actually need yet none of them explain how they even have powers let alone learned how to control them. Even Ana's backstory doesn't match Daimon's- there still are some parts missing, yes she was taken by the father during his serial killings but huh?? So what?? What about Daimon? Nothing was explained even though he is the main character. Flashbacks are meant to explain details or build up the character's present motivations. Ana's character became more developed than the lead- and yes she was the best actor but even her character was a let down because of handcuffs from the writing staff.

That in itself is also the main problem. The writing.

Were the writers put in a bubble away from everything because it sure reflects that.

I constantly felt that the actors were too constrained by the writing or by the director. Its pretty bad when you can feel the stress from an actor- not from the writing but by the production itself.

We have all seen these shows before folks. Even last year with "EVIL" and the years before with the "Exorcist" tv series, or even with DC's "Constantine" we have all been down this road before. I mean "Supernatural" has done this shlock for 15 seasons!! Yet Marvel still hasn't figured out this angle of their medium and it has all been done better.

I understand that "believability" is an essential part of making a show based on demons and the supernatural a tough pill to swallow, but it hasn't been the issue with any of the superhero films or even previous shows like Agents of Shield or Daredevil?

So what is the problem?

I believe it lies with Jeph Loeb.

His record for quality tv work has been decent, however when it comes to commitment- especially in a product that is outside of his ballpark, it usually fails miserably.

Remember the Inhumans?

It had so much potential but its obvious laziness in part to production and writing was its own downfall.

Even Agents of Shield was a mess for fans of Marvel- yes its best seasons have been the most recent ones but as a Marvel fan- of the books that is, it felt like a waste. The whole point of the films and tv series was that it was all in the same universe yet it never felt like it was. I understand the need for it all to be seperate but sorry its a comic book tv show- you have to check your books and references!! Now that we have moved on from all of that and Marvel has this new contract with Hulu, I thought Loeb was gone too.

Boy was I wrong.

Its the same shit again.

Cheap production. Bad writing. No referencing. A horror show that's not scary nor mysterious at all.

Hardly a detective story.

The actors felt overworked and underpaid.

Not even any resemblance to the characters they're based on.

Like I said it felt like a Fox production and not a Marvel one.

Solution for Marvel:

1: They need to do what they did with the Marvel film franchise- add more charisma in their characters, as well as find a lead that can push the story along into other shows.

For example a cameo by Doctor Strange would have helped a lot. Considering that he might be your face of Marvel going into the next Phase of films, they should really consider utilizing that character more or at the very least have other crossover elements.

However there are some who will complain that it would make the show "hokey" or unbelievable and my response has always been that there needs to be more un-realism than realism.

Yes, we know that magic and hell are not real but in the world of Marvel- they are- but so are ducks that talk and smoke cigars and raccoon that shoot guns bigger than 5 men put together. So knowing this, to create a show that bridges fantasy and realism, Hell and Earth, this show failed to balance that as well as represent the characters its based on.

2: None of the characters looked anything like their book counterparts- if only by name or attitude alone. I understand they are rebuilding a corner of the Marvel universe but if they continue to misrepresent the characters they attempt to world build upon, then there will be a lack of faith by viewers of any other property going forward.

Where was the fiery Daimon Helstorm? Even then so- where was the real Santana? Horns n all?

Daimon's trademark satanic emblem was a nice touch as well as his trident in the last episode- but that's it?

These two characters are half-demons. They need to act and look like it. If WB's Lucifer can do it why can't this show even make the plate?

3: Better writing. Better editing. One review that i read mentioned the bad editing. I would agree only that it would be hard to prove considering as bad as the placement of scenes and writing was- the editing probably made it better. A very uneven series from episode to episode. I mentioned earlier about "referencing," that writers and directors should pay attention to previous works or the product its based on, and that is clearly not happening here. Following along from episode to episode, alot was skipped over or totally brushed off to keep the story going. This is episode tv folks not a 3 hour flick that needs to be edited down to an hour/45, there needs to be consistency.

Also the big moments need to be bigger and more powerful. The fight scenes were great but meaningless. When Daimon comes back its not unexpected or expected but more "eh, ok , you're here!" Other characters are built up like Victoria to fight back at Evil only to be brushed off by Daimon to save her thus expunging any of the character's reason to fight at all. Ana is mostly there in the end as a helper instead of actually a fighter..

It comes off very toned down then what it could have been. Even the demons are misrepresented for crying out loud!!!

4: Please stop dragging a 2 episode arc over 10 episodes! Like the Netflix shows previously, Loeb and Co. continue to drag us through story arcs that really should have been shorter and to the point. Instead we struggle through flashbacks upon flashbacks, and constant pointless dialogue. Even Iron Fist or Luke Cage didn't have that much yip yap!!

5. Get a new producer.

Its time for Jeph Loeb to move on to something else or put him back on books.

I don't know what it is about each movie/tv producer but they have a consistent trademark to their projects and Loeb has what looks like "an 70s/80s style" for tv programming. From the scripts, to the acting, to the directing- even the costume dept, its all got the Loeb touch. The worst is of course the Inhumans- a show so dreadful that the graphic novel it was based on was 100x better. As is the case with Helstrom, the actors were overworking and underpaid- i mean the actor who played Black Bolt learned sign language for the role!! Huh??

As a fan of the books and films, I totally bought into Kevin Feige's announcement that he was going to be in charge of both divisions. But like most things in Hollywood, announcements are made usually in spite- as if some other machination was moving behind the scenes. As fans we were all cheering that news earlier this year once it was announced that AOS was having its last season and that neither Daredevil or its spinoffs were continuing as well. There was some depression as we wondered what the future of the characters were- rumours continued that Daredevil could cameo in a Spider-Man flick or appear on the planned She-Hulk tv show. Then the announcements of the Disney Plus schedule of shows had us jumping out our seats. Then the pandemic came and no more news..just rumours upon rumours..

Thus when Helstorm went back on as planned- it was the shining light alot of the fans needed. The hope that this pandemic was going to be over soon and we would have some wonderful new shows- even The Mandolorian!!

So its sad to note that this show didn't make the cut. Like others I possibly had put this show on a pedestal ( as well as hopeful that my collection of Son of Satan and Hellstrom comics would increase in price..ehhh)expecting that a new adventure for Marvel had been started.

Unfortunately it seems that this could be over before its begun. With an abrupt cancellation of a Ghost Rider tv series and no word on anything else with Hulu(except for the Patton Oswalt, MODOK cartoon of course- ugh don't get me started on that!),I truly wonder what the next few years will be with Marvel. A new head of the tv division needs to happen asap. I'm sorry but Feige overseeing both divisions is fine but there needs to be a main tv producer isn't a comic book hack trying to make a tv show. If they needed that, they should have rehired Avi Arad!

Neal McDonough is Norman Osborn......C'mon Sony get it done!!

2012-03-28T13:06:00.001-04:00

What is interesting is the fact that Neal's involvement in the Marvel Universe has been relegated to only Dum Dum Dugan,Nick Fury's buddy from his WW2 days(who is supposed to be part of his special team in SHIELD)in the last CAPTAIN AMERICA film, who is also supposed to be appearing in later films as well...I wonder if they do cast him in a future incarnation of Norman Osborn-maybe teaming with Loki, how they will he be able to play both parts, especially if Dum Dum makes an appearance? I hope he is indeed casted for the role as Osborn-it would only make so much sense!! On his take on "Dum Dum Dugan" from Captain America, "Yeah, Dum Dum used to be head of SHIELD. During World War Two, Nick Fury had the super serum. He got shot, and blood got all over Dum Dum, so I got the super serum, too. I didn't get it as much as Cap or Nick, but I could jump into any Marvel movie, into Wolverine or you name it. Dum Dum is just a fun guy to play.."

Recently, Neal has been on "Justified" and has been involved with the long awaited "the Prototype" and "RED 2"...

HumpDay News 03, clips and trailers..

2011-04-08T05:03:00.012-04:00

So yeah I'm a little late this week, its a bit slow in Hollywood however I was able to grab some interesting stuff for the film geeks out there...

--Dark Tower news: Javier Bardem(he was Anton Chigurh) is now set in stone to play Roland in the potential Dark Tower franchise by Ron Howard. The soon to be in production series is based on the series of books by Stephen King, and will comprise of 3 films and various mini-series for television which will be released between the 3 films..

--WB News: The WB,in its plan on revamping, resurrecting and rebooting old films even if they weren't hits, are on the attack as they plan on bringing back Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday in "Wild Guns".
After the success of Sherlock Holmes, and looking for another franchise, the WB are turning towards westerns considering that even though their "Jonah Hex" did poorly at the box office-a revival of sorts of the western theme has been slowly picking up in Hollywood. Upcoming films such as "The Lone Ranger","Cowboys and Aliens"and Paramount's version of Doc Holiday(which was still on the books last i heard)and also a reboot of "Young Guns" which was also rumoured, are heating up that genre.
Using the same style and formula that won viewers with Sherlock Holmes, the WB plan on winning again with an updated version of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, the latter character having been famously and perfected by Val Kilmer in the film "Tombstone".

In this new incarnation, the pair of Earp and Holliday attempt to save Sitting Bull's kidnapped daughter from an evil Shaman.
Who they get to play that character is anyone's guess but my hopes is that Ben Foster would get it-after playing a similar character in "3:10 to Yuma" or maybe even his co-star in that film Christian Bale, who will be done with the Batman franchise by then..

--Speaking of reboots-or the attempt to reboot,"The Three Stooges" the long and gestating production(its been in the works for like forever I think),finally has managed to cast 2 of the 3 main characters. Will Sasso of tv's "Shit my dad says","Less than Perfect" and "MADtv" has been casted as Curly, while Sean Hayes, who played Jack Mcfarland on "Will and Grace" has been casted as Larry. This production is being led by The Farrelly Brothers whose last film "Hall Pass" was a surprise winner at the box office and comeback of sorts for the duo who have had a string of duds at the box office-their last big hit was "Me,Myself and Irene" back in 2000..'

--The upcoming Paul Bettany sci-fi flick "Priest", is soon to be released and as part of the promotion for it,they have released the animated clip, by Gennady Tartakovsky(SamaraiJack,Clone wars) below which though not in the film, is a prologue to the film ala "Animatrix" or "Gotham Knights".

--Looks like "Bill and Ted 3" is back on the table, says Keanu Reeves in a recent interview. He says that "writers should be turning in the script in 6 weeks"..

--Sci-Fi news: Neill Blomkamp's next big film "Elysium" is courting more heavy hitters after aquiring Matt Damon, now have gotten Jodie Foster,Sharlto Copely(he was in Blomkamp's debut film "District 9" and recently "the A-Team"),Wagner Noura(who is an up and coming star-check out Elite Squad2)and William Fichtner who recently turned up in Drive Angry 3D and is known for his appearances on Entourage and Prison Break. This film is looking to be next years big alien movie and Blomkamp's next big hit..

That's all for now, I leave you with this trailer from Roland Emmerich's "Anomynous". The same director that gave you "10,000 B.C.","2012" and "the Day after Tomorrow"..I guess he's trying to do a period piece now...oh well..anyhoo, cya VK@Nyte

The Greatest Christopher Walken moments on Film..Happy Birthday Chris!!

2011-04-05T05:54:00.002-04:00

the next two scenes are from "At Close Range",the first scene Chris Penn is killed by his father(Walken),the next scene has Sean Penn following up the situation in ther kitchen with Walken.

An interesting side note: in the previous scene,in order to add more drama, they added blanks to the gun, which was not mentioned to Walken at all nor in the script.Walken assumed it was unloaded-however it was known that Walken has a fear of guns, especially ones that shoot. So it was Penn's insistance that it be loaded to bring the fear out of Walken while in character..in the clip below Penn talks about filming this scene...

2011-03-23T07:30:00.000-04:00

Well I'm going to try tostart doing this again..ugh..
Anyhoo the news you haven't heard yet..

-Walden Media, the film company that has a penchant for trying to make franchises from
children's favorite series of books(and ruining them) like the C.S.Lewis Narnia series, have started to go into a quasi-pre-production of "The Magician's Nephew", the 6th book in the Narnia series and also the prequel story of the franchise. Thus bypassing the two previous books in the series "the Silver Chair" and "The Horse and his boy". Obviously based on "Worldwide Reciepts", this film will most likely be made especially if Fox has anything to do with it and especially since Fox still has that big pot of AVATAR money in the bank, and still hasn't wasted it all on trying to reboot another franchise miserably, for like the tenth time. Hopefully this next film will put an end to a dieing franchise which if they are really smart should do this ala "the Hobbit" and tie in "the Last Battle" thus ending the series..check it out here

-The biggest movie next year that you haven't heard about,"the Hunger Games", has casted after much hullabaloo, Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence who after achieving aclaim for "Winter's Bone" this past year, has been on every director's radar. This film is based on the first book in a trilogy by author Suzanne Collins, who got the idea of a post apocalyptic future where chldren are forced to fight each other in games in place of "tribute" to "the Capitol".Other casting for this film is currently goin on,with female favorite male actors being sorted out by the likes of Alex Pettyfur,Josh Hutcherson,Hunter Parrish, and newcomer Callan McAuliffe. more info here.

The film's scenario from IMDB:
"In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives."

Because of this film's popularity, WB pushed back the forthcoming Clash of the Titans sequel "the Wrath of the Titans" to earlier in March of next year. Expect "The Hunger Games" to be your teenager's next t-shirt at Hot Topic...I'm just sayin..

-So speaking of sequels, prequels and female fantasies, the ever popular James"I was James Dean in another life" Franco, coming off his Oscar nomination for 127 hours and Masters degree, will be headlining the prequel/reboot of the "Planet of the Apes" franchise (that initially was to be restarted by Mark Wahlberg-which bombed, try again I guess) but now has been greenlighted for release this August!! Hopefully "Rise of the Apes", carries the awesomeness of his next film "Her Highness" and brings back his credibility after the Oscars debacle, because we all know what happened to Val Kilmer right?
Recap: James Franco,RISE OF THE APES, AUGUST 2011...got it?check it out here.

-WB and Legendary Pictures(300 etc) are currently casting for a live action AKIRA film. What? You don't know what AKIRA is??Have you seen the cartoon or the comic book series? ugh..grrreat..well here is the Bluray trailer:

Anyhoo, scripts have gone out supposedly to all popular actors in their 30s.."For the role of Tetsuo, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy have been given the new script. For the role of Kaneda, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix have received the script."
Anyway,I don't see any of these guys playing the leads..maybe Hedlund but that's it.

the story premise from IMDB and wikipedia here:
"Kaneda is a bike gang leader whose close friend Tetsuo gets involved in a government secret project known as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago."

Pretty heavy stuff, hopefully the WB will do it right...Director?? God hope its not The Wachowskis..

-Other news,short list:

--The Third Batman flick"The Dark Knight Rises",after casting Tom Hardy(Inception,Bronson),Anne Hathaway and now Joseph Gordon Levitt(Brick,Inception), this film is starting to look more and more oscar worthy then Inception was. Rumours persist that Juno Temple(St.Trinians,Greenberg, the upcoming 3Musketeers film)

has also been casted, possibly as Anne Hathaway's roommate or a female Robin-which hopefully isn't the case. The only big part yet to be casted is the film's main villian, which Chris Nolan has been very mum about...

--The next Superman reboot is moving along in casting after having casted Henry Cavill(the Tudors) as Clark Kent/Superman, now has casted Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as his Kent parents. Other big parts to fill as of yet: Lois Lane, and the supposed villian ZOD. Zach Snyder, the current director for the film said this about his version of the franchise:

"think the visual style of “Superman,” though I can’t say for certain as it’s early, but I kind of feel like — and I did say to the studio – that what’s cool for me and interesting, and odd, is that “Superman” is probably going to be the most realistic movie I’ve ever made. It’s kind of fun that the most realistic movie I probably will make is a movie called “Superman.” Which shows how crazy my other movies are. Because I guess for him to be credible… He gets more credible by the reality that you can bring to him, you know emotionally, and visually, I think."

You can check out the rest of this interview here and here.

---Also here's a pic of Temura Morrison(JangoFett) as Abin Sur in the Green Lantern film:

--Marvel News??eh..THOR and Captain America are comin out this summer.DUH. Is there a trailer for Cap yet??NOPE.

ugh..Anyway the powers that be had reshoots of Captain america this month and a trailer for the film should be out this week, especially after hinting at it on Entertainment Tonight this past week..In Thor news, Chris Hemsworth(THOR) has been doing the rounds at ComicCons and such but really, not saying much..eh..Marvel really needs to promote their films better is all I'm sayin..Here is the Cap America clip and trailer for Thor. Enjoy!

So that's that, hopefully you all have been caught up to speed on what's what..
I'll try to update on the current statuses of other properties as news develops as well as give you my bottom line on whats what ..

So yes I haven't been updating on here like a good lil boy-sorry!
Anyhoo, I thought I would put some topics out there with pics..

To the left, its the new pic of Green Lantern's "lantern",in the comics it is what powers his ring and whatnot..pretty cool..The trailer for the film should be out with the release of the next Harry Potter porn flick..I mean teen flick..whatever..

Speaking of other heroes from DC comics or what they're called now- DC Entertainment",which because of the new business name -had to move ALL of their offices from New York City to California. Yes, a lil reorganizing thanks to the parent company, Warner Brothers-which in the course of the move allowed 200 staff members to be canned just in time for the NY Comic-Con..How nice..

With that happening, DCE (as I'm going to call them), has started to set a plan in motion to get their respective "heroes" film deals. Along with Green Lantern as the jumping off point like Iron Man is to Marvel, they plan on a sequel as well as their next hero film to be either The FLASH or the next quasi-sequel of SUPERMAN. The question, fans and hollywood alike are asking amongst each other is, is Zach Snyder the director they want to direct Superman??

Having watched Tom Welling portray the character for the last 9 seasons and the currently last 10th season, and having watched the mess-up that was Superman Returns with Brandon Routh, who should be the next actor to be the Big Cheese??

On online film forums it has been a threeway pick between giving Routh a second chance, having Welling back as well as the rest of the cast for a bigger film or getting someone newer and a rising star such as Henry Cavill who recently starred in HBO's "The TUDORS" as King Henry's right hand man..

But knowing that Welling has already decided on a future in film directing and producing-having produced Smallville the last few seasons as well as the new "Hellcats" show on CW, he seems to be the least interested in acting that part again unless it would involve the whole cast..

Knowing that Chris Nolan is involved as a producer on the film as well as Zach Snyder being the director picked to take the franchise to the next level, I would almost bet that Cavill would be their choice over both Routh and Welling-but who knows??

Snyder has mentioned that this next film will deal with Clark's trials and tribulations of ascending to superhero status..Problem is-that's already been done,so why go thru the trouble of recasting when you have a show that obviously has legs,as well as actors for hire after this next season ends?

Especially with the notion that all of DC's future hero films would eventually merge the heroes into one film ala "Justice League", I don't understand why they would foolishly waste money like that.

Anyhoo, other talk from DCE is that they have also abandoned the idea of a Wonder Woman film and have decided to go the small screen way..Another Wonder woman tv show..ugh.

I almost think that DCE needs like a uber-fan on their properties board, at least then stupid crap like that wouldn't happen.

However, if it was a spin-off of the current Smallville, then maybe it might make sense.

Currently on the show, other heroes from the Justice Society as well as the Justice League have become staples of the show.Green Arrow,Hawkman,League of Superheroes,Martian Manhunter, and Dr.Fate...If they would spin these characters onto another show using Wonder Woman as a focal point-another super bad ass(pardon the pun-y'know what I mean), then maybe eventually to a feature film-this could be a money maker down the road.

But oh well. Dreams in fandom constantly get squashed but then are constantly revived when those dreams become reality.

Right now,my only dream is what I hope I get for x-mas..my wonder woman.

Cya later VK@NYTE

So long Edwin Morrow, also known as "Backpack Ed", Another of the Ellicott City Watchmen will be missed.

2010-02-06T01:46:00.005-05:00

On Feb.4th, Mr. Morrow decided to relax on the train tracks in Ellicott City,Md. Un beknownst to him, at that hour, the local train usually passes thru E.C...
Not hearing the train because he had earphones on thus listening to his tunes and not the horn of the train- Mr.Morrow was run over by the unstoppable train.

Sadly, unlike others who have died on the tracks,Mr.Morrow was a local fixture of historical Ellicott City, especially on Main Street, within the confines of the local coffee houses, bars and restaurants.Well liked by the locals especially those who always enjoyed his presence and conversation...Alcohol and drugs had plagued him his whole adult life, having been thru many an odd job in the past few years and due to the recession, he had been without a job for sometime. A toxicology report hasn't been released however it is known that prior to the accident "Acid" could've been a factor in his demise as reported on Facebook by local friends.

Always a bright and likable fellow, and a great one for conversation at any time of day, with hope that he has at last found peace.

Catch u on the flipside, Ed!!
