Today is my last day as Village Clerk for Village of The Branch. The time has come for me to move on to another position in another field. While I am happy for the new opportunity, I am sad to leave the wonderful residents and business people of The Branch. It has been my pleasure to serve you officially for the past five years and unofficially for many years before that. Best wishes for a wonderful community that continues to thrive!

New Area Code for Suffolk County

The New York State Public Service Commission is inviting public comments on a proposal by Staff of the Department of Public Service to implement a new area code for Suffolk County. The new area code would be used throughout Suffolk County for all new telecommunications services while existing phone numbers would not be affected. A notice regarding this proposal is on file at Village Hall. Please feel free to come in during business hours to review the notice. Further information is available on the Department's website www.dps.ny.gov.

Fall Leaf and Brush Pick Up Schedule

The Fall Leaf and Brush Pick Up Dates will be the weeks of:

November 10th
December 1st
December 15th

Place leaves, small twigs and brush in leaf bags. Larger branches must be cut and tied into 3 foot manageable bundles.

Tree trunks or stumps will not be picked up.

Do not place items in the street. Leaf bags and tied bundles will be picked up separately.

NOTE: The pick-up will take more than one day to complete and all items in all areas will be removed. Once the truck passes your area it will not be sent back to pick up items not placed out in time

Spring Leaf and Brush Pick Ups will be done the week of April 28th and June 2nd. A date for a summer pick up is still to be determined. Please continue to check the website for details.

*Please note the pick up will take more than one day to complete and all appropriate items in all areas will be removed. Once the truck passes your area it will not be sent back to pick up items not placed out in time. Pick ups start on Monday of the above weeks.

Community Crime Stoppers Meeting

There have been reports of drug and gang-related trouble in some of the bars around town. There will be a meeting at the Nesconset Library with Crime Stoppers next week to discuss local crime. I thought I'd pass along the information to our residents.

Fourth Precinct Community Meeting

April 1st, 2014 at 7p.m.

Nesconset Library located at 148 Smithtown Blvd, Nesconset

Join them for for a presentation by Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers is a program that works along with the community to prevent and solve crimes.

Elections are Coming!

Village Elections are held annually on the third Tuesday of March. This year the date for elections is Tuesday, March 19th, 2013. The polls will be open from 12 noon - 9:00pm in Village Hall.

This year there are two Trustee's spots that are to be filled by election. The last day to submit independent nominating petitions to get someone's name on the ballot is Tuesday, February 12th. If anyone has questions regarding the Village election process, please call the Clerk or stop by during business hours (T and Th 10am - 2pm).

Please, please, please come out and vote!! Voting is the most basic privilege of our great system of democracy. In the past, Village elections have been decided with as little as 35 or 50 votes being cast. Stop by our lovely Village Hall and put in your two cents!

Neighborly Concerns

Hello. My name is Maureen Hernandez and I am your Village Clerk. I took over the position in April 2012 when Bob Morlath stepped down after 18 years of dedicated service. I am happy to serve you with any questions, requests or concerns you may have and look forward to getting to know the residents of the Village of The Branch.

My position affords me the opportunity to hear and see the many concerns of our residents. Thankfully, most of these concerns have more to do with quality of life within our fair Village than they do with crime or safety of our residents. I'd like to share with you three of the more common issues:

1) Residents not curbing their dogs properly.

Did you know that it is actually against Village Code to NOT curb your dog? Everyone should pick up after their pets and pet owners should know that they can’t just let their pets do their business any old place. Village Code §38-2.1 B states:

No person owning, harboring, keeping, or in charge of any dog shall cause, suffer, or allow such dog to soil, defile, urinate, defecate on or deface any public property, including, but not limited to, parks, roadways, highways, streets, walkways, pathways, sidewalks, or off-leash areas, or any place where people congregate or walk or on any private property without the permission of the owner of said private property.

Please be considerate of your neighbor’s feelings on the subject. This is just common courtesy and should not need to be something enforced by law.

2) Blowing, raking and dumping leaves on public property.

Fallen leaves are considered litter under Village Code §67-2. That means that if you blow or rake your leaves into the gutter, you are guilty of littering and can be fined $200 for each offense. This is also true if you happen to dump your leaves into Village parkland. Again, please be courteous and take care of the leaves on your property – don’t just make them someone else’s problem.

3) Pools being drained into the street.

If you own a swimming pool of any kind, it is illegal for you to drain the water into the street. (see Village Code § 75-9) Everyone must do their part to keep Long Island’s waters clean. If pool water is pumped into the street (or onto a driveway where it automatically runs into the street), it does not get naturally filtered by the earth and can contaminate our rivers & streams once it enters storm drains.
