Students often ask me WHY they should use the “inside smile” while singing. They ask questions like “what if its a sad song”? There is a reason why it is called the “inside smile” and its just a simple lift of the face while singing. Its something that needs to be practiced and shouldn’t be an EAR to EAR smile. It takes good muscle memory and should be practiced while looking in the mirror. If you work on this and master it you can increase your overall tone and make the voice sound warmer…

One of my long time students Danny recorded a LIVE high quality HD audition video and I made sure I was there to help coach him on 4 outstanding performances. He is auditioning for several of the nations top music schools and I think he has great possibilities!! Danny is an amazing singer/songwriter and even at 17 years old he has what it takes to go places. I have worked with him for several years now and he has always been dedicated to his craft….that is what a true singer/performer has to be. Good job Danny!!

I always tell my students that singers/performers become “great” when they work hard on their own. You can take years of lessons but if you don’t work hard on your own, by yourself, you will have a much more difficult time trying to become GREAT!! Working on your own allows a singer the freedom to “take chances” and not worry about who is listening. Try it out, it could lead to great things…

Remember the “3 D’s”…”Direction, Devotion and Dedication”. My student Georgia did and she got the lead role in “ANNIE”

If you work hard and really spend the time, effort and energy you can land good parts. My student Georgia is one of those students that really applies herself and she has gotten many musical theater roles because of it. I always tell my students remember the three “D’s”. Devotion, dedication and direction…whether you’re an aspiring singer/songwriter or into musical theater, the 3 “D’s” always matter…

This photo was taken last weekend. One of my students “Cameron” (center) and his mother Shelly(far left) went to see my daughter(second from left) perform in the Sacramento Theater Company production of SUDS. This photo was taken in front of the stage after the show. The play has received glowing reviews and my daughter was magnificent!!

My daughter Nanci Zoppi was not only vocally trained by me but she is also a graduate of the prestigious “Circle in the square” performing arts school on Broadway in New York. She is currently an equity actress/singer with an extensive resume’ of many local and national productions.

Stage Fright? My mom used to say “act like the world owes you a living and its 3 payments behind”!!

I’ve often been asked about that feeling of butterfly’s before getting onstage. I always tell my students the same thing. You will always have butterfly’s right before you get onstage, its how you deal with them that truly counts. I always tell students that “confidence is half the battle” and it truly is. My mom used to say “get up there onstage and act like the world owes you a living and its 3 payments behind”. LOL!! I always loved that saying and in reality there is alot of truth to it. You’ve got to truly believe that you can do it and you can’t care what certain people in the audience think. There will always be people that love you and people that don’t. Singing is an art and is totally subjective…

I’ve been asked this question on many occasions and its a simple process if you truly get it!!

You HAVE TO KNOW WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT!! If you don’t know what you’re conveying people will pick that up quickly and they just won’t get it. You’ve got to “tell the story” just like you would tell a close friend of yours a story….You have to believe in what your saying/singing…
