Isu Dr Asri: PGSM pertahan memorandum, tiada permohonan maaf

KUALA LUMPUR: Persatuan Peguam Syarie Malaysia (PGSM) tetap dengan pendirian untuk mempertahankan kandungan memorandum yang dihantar kepada Yang di-Pertuan Agong berikutan bantahan terhadap penawaran jawatan Yang Dipertua Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) terhadap bekas Mufti Perlis, Dr Asri Mohd Zainul Abidin.

Presiden PGSM, Mohamad Isa Abdul Ralip berkata PGSM tidak akan menarik balik tuduhan yang terkandung dalam memorandum berkenaan.

Malah tiada sebarang permohonan maaf secara terbuka berhubung isu berkenaan.

“PGSM hanya menarik balik penyiaran memorandum berkenaan dari laman web rasmi yang telah pun kami lakukan sebelum Mohd Asri mendedahkannya kepada media.

“Sebaliknya kami difahamkan bahawa beliau sendiri yang membuat salinan memorandum berkenaan dan menyiarkannya dalam blog peribadi beliau serta mengedarkannya kepada pihak media dan pihak-pihak lain,” katanya dalam sidang media khas di pejabat PGSM di sini hari ini.

Bagaimanapun dalam sidang media berkenaan, Mohamad Isa tidak membuka ruang soal jawab kepada media.

Penjelasan yang diberikan Mohamad Isa itu ternyata berbeza dengan hasil pertemuan tertutup antara beliau, Mohd Asri, Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom dan Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim), Datuk Wan Muhammad Sheikh Abdul Aziz yang diadakan di ibu negara semalam.

Mohd Asri sendiri semalam berkata hasil pertemuan tersebut, PGSM sedia menarik balik memorandum berkenaan serta mengemukakan permohonan maaf secara terbuka kepada beliau.

Malah melalui salinan draf yang dimuatkan dalam laman web Mohd Asri juga menyatakan kesediaan PGSM untuk berbuat demikian.

Dalam pada itu Mohamad Isa mendakwa Mohd Asri telah memungkiri perjanjian supaya kandungan pertemuan tersebut tidak didedahkan kepada media.

“PGSM amat kesal dengan tindakan Mohd Asri yang memungkiri perjanjian penyelesaian secara musyawarah yang dipengerusikan oleh Datuk Jamil Khir… perbuatannya itu jelas tidak menghormati menteri yang bertindak sebagai mediator.

“Dalam pertemuan semalam, PGSM telah bersetuju untuk menamatkan konflik yang tercetus demi kemaslahatan (faedah) dan kepentingan umat Islam secara keseluruhannya.

“Kedua-dua belah pihak telah bersetuju untuk tidak memberi sebarang kenyataan media bagi mengelakkan kekeliruan di kalangan umat Islam negara ini,” katanya.

Resolusi berkenaan dicapai dalam satu mesyuarat khas antara PGSM dan sepuluh pertubuhan bukan kerajaan (NGO) yang diadakan sebelum sidang media berkenaan.

Malah Mohamad Isa juga berkata selepas isu ini timbul, PGSM terus mendapat sokongan yang lebih besar daripada beberapa NGO Islam, tokoh agama, kumpulan pelajar Islam dan golongan pendakwah.

Najib agihkan tugas kepada kementerian

PUTRAJAYA: Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, dalam langkah yang tidak pernah dilakukan sebelum ini, hari ini mengagihkan tugas, tanggungjawab dan had masa kepada pelbagai kementerian dan agensi bagi memastikan strategi dan langkah yang diumumkan dalam Bajet 2010 dilaksanakan mengikut jadual.

Najib, yang juga Menteri Kewangan, berbuat demikian pada mesyuarat dengan para menteri Kabinet dan ketua jabatan dan agensi kerajaan di Kementerian Kewangan petang ini.

Kementerian Kewangan dalam satu kenyataan berkata langkah itu bagi memastikan semua langkah yang akan dilaksanakan akan memberi manfaat kepada rakyat.

“Pemantauan susulan akan dilakukan untuk memastikan objektif dan had masa yang disasarkan dicapai. Unit Pengurusan Projek di bawah Kementerian Kewangan akan memantau pelaksanaan langkah-langkah dalam Bajet 2010 untuk memastikan pelaksanaan yang cepat dan efektif,” menurut kenyataan itu.

Katanya Unit Penyelarasan Pelaksanaan (ICU) di Jabatan Perdana Menteri dengan cawangannya di setiap negeri dan di peringkat divisyen dan daerah di negeri-negeri lebih besar, akan bertindak sebagai penyelesai masalah di lapangan bagi projek fizikal.

Menurut kenyataan itu, Jawatankuasa Teknikal sedia ada bagi Pakej Rangsangan Ekonomi di Kementerian Kewangan, yang bermesyuarat setiap minggu akan menyelia pemantauan menyeluruh dan menangani isu bagi memastikan kejayaan pelaksanaan Bajet 2010.

“Perdana Menteri memberikan taklimat kepada semua menteri, Ketua Setiausaha, ketua-ketua jabatan dan agensi serta pemegang amanah lain mengenai apa yang perlu dilakukan.

“Mereka diingatkan bahawa kebajikan rakyat adalah paling utama dan menekankan bahawa setiap usaha perlu dilakukan bagi memastikan objektif Bajet 2010 direalisasikan sepenuhnya.”

Najib membentangkan Bajet 2010 di Dewan Rakyat pada 23 Okt lepas bertema “1Malaysia, Kemakmuran Bersama” yang dirumus untuk dijadikan asas bagi melonjakkan negara menjadi sebuah ekonomi pendapatan tinggi. BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Pegawai Penguatkuasa Agama Daerah Gombak Barat (JAIS), Kyairool Nizam Khairuddin, saksi kedua bagi kes khalwat Memey-Norman hari ini mengaku yang dia menggunakan definisi yang salah dan tidak tahu membezakan antara TERSEMBUNYI dan TERSELINDUNG.

Kyairool berkata demikian ketika membuat penjelasan tentang Seksyen 29(1)(a) dan Seksyen 29(1)(b) Enakmen Jenayah Selangor 1995 dalam kes ini.

Pengakuan ini dicatitkan ketika beliau ditanya oleh peguam Fakrul Azman Abu Hassan yang mewakili Memey, dan Norman di Mahkamah Rendah Gombak Timur pagi tadi.

Kyairool merupakan salah seorang dari 7 saksi dalam perbicaraan kes khalwat pasangan pelakon, Memey bersama Norman Hakim atau nama sebenar Mohamed Norhakim Zaidon, 33, yang didakwa berlaku di pejabat beralamat 4-1A, Jalan UP 1/2 Taman Ukay Perdana, Hulu Klang, jam antara 1.45 pagi hingga 3 pagi, pada 30 Oktober 2008.

Saksi berusia 25 tahun ini, telah diasak berkali-kali untuk memberi definisi dan perbezaan antara ‘Tersembunyi’ dan ‘Terselindung’.

FAKRUL: Sebagai pegawai penguatkuasa agama, adakah anda tahu kesalahan dan seksyen yang berkaitan sebelum tangkapan dibuat? Dalam kes ini, Seksyen 29(1)(a) dan Seksyen 29(1)(b) Enakmen Jenayah Selangor 1995 dalam kes ini.

KYAIROOL: Ya

FAKRUL: Merujuk kepada keterangan awal bersumpah anda, anda ditanya mengenai Seksyen 29(1)(a) dan Seksyen 29(1)(b) Enakmen Jenayah Selangor 1995.

Bagaimanapun, kata Fakrul, Seksyen 29. KYAIROOL: Tidak setuju.

FAKRUL: Anda kata tidak setuju walaupun anda menggunakan perkataan TERSEMBUNYI. Saya kata TERSELINDUNG. Setujukah anda telah memberikan keterangan yang salah?

KYAIROOL: Setuju.

FAKRUL: Jadi bila Seksyen itu tidak ada menggunakan perkataan TERSEMBUNYI. Setujukah anda telah menambah perkataan sendiri dalam Seksyen tersebut?

KYAIROOL: Setuju.

FAKRUL: Jadi anda kata berpengalaman 1 tahun 1 bulan tetapi sebenarnya anda tidak tahu peruntukan dalam ENAKMEN JENAYAH SYARIAH (SELANGOR) 1995 secara terperinci. Adakah anda bersetuju dengan saya.

KYAIROOL: Saya tidak setuju.

FAKRUL: ENAKMEN JENAYAH SYARIAH (SELANGOR) 1995 jelas menyatakan tempat TERSELINDUNG tetapi anda katakan tempat TERSEMBUNYI. Adakah betul saya katakan anda telah memberikan definisi yang salah?

Ketika diasak beberapa kali oleh Fakrul, Kyairool turut mengaku yang dirinya telah menipu semasa memberikan keterangan bersumpah.

Fakrul: “Dalam keterangan anda, anda beritahu mahkamah bahawa anda, Abdul Rahman Lai (ketua pegawai operasi) dan Nafarul naik ke atas premis itu bersama dua anggota polis.

Merujuk kepada keterangan Abdul Rahman Lai, beliau memberitahu mahkamah pada masa itu, anggota JAIS berpecah kepada dua kumpulan. Satu kumpulan naik ke atas sementara Abdul Rahman Lai sendiri mengawasi di bahagian bawah. Jadi saya katakan keterangan ini tidak betul.”

Kyairool: Tidak setuju.

FAKRUL: Adakah kamu kata keterangan (ketua pegawai operasi) Abdul Rahman Lai itu tidak betul sebab dia berbohong?

KYAIROOL: Mungkin dia tidak pasti.

FAKRUL: Setujukah awak bahawa Abdul Rahman Lai ialah pembohong?

KYAIROOL: Tidak.

FAKRUL: Setujukah awak keterangan anda dan keterangan Abdul Rahman Lai adalah bercanggah.

KYAIROOL: Setuju.

FAKRUL: Dalam keadaan sedemikian, setujukah anda mahkamah sekarang mahkamah tidak tahu siapa yang bercakap bohong.

KYAIROOL: Ya.

FAKRUL: Setujukah anda kalau saya katakan awak menipu kerana awak telah memberikan keterangan yang bercanggah.

KYAIROOL: Setuju.

FAKRUL: Setujukah anda ialah saksi yang tidak boleh dipercayai dalam kes ini kerana telah dua kali menipu?

KYAIROOL: Tidak.

Sementara itu, Kyairool turut mengaku ketua pegawai operasi, Abdul Rahman Lai yang mengetahui operasi khalwat pada malam terbabit telah menipu dalam keterangan bersumpahnya.

Kyairool membuat pengakuan tersebut ketika disoal Fakrul mengenai bagaimana dia dan Abdul Rahman Lai tahu tentang tingkat di atas turut disewa oleh Norman.

FAKRUL: Merujuk kepada keterangan Abdul Rahman Lai, mahkamah diberitahu pengadu telah memaklumkan tingkat atas turut disewa oleh Norman, 15 minit selepas memasuki premis itu.

Anda pula menyatakan anda tahu maklumat (bahawa tingkat atas turut disewa oleh Norman) sebelum masuk ke premis itu lagi.

Adakah anda bersetuju keterangan anda telah bercanggah dengan keterangan Abdul Rahman Lai?

KYAIROOL: Tidak setuju.

FAKRUL: Adakah anda bersetuju ketua operasi anda telah menipu?

KYAIROOL: Ya

FAKRUL: Adakah anda tipu atau dia tipu?

KYAIROOL: Dia silap. Dia salah.

Yufang pulls out of SEA Games

KUALA LUMPUR: A 16-week pregnant Yuan Yufang has pulled out from the Laos SEA Games athletics squad and her late withdrawal has irked the Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU).

In fact, the national body are contemplating taking action against the 33-year-old walker for being late in informing them about her pregnancy and withdrawal.

No go: Yufang has pulled out of the SEA Games squad after telling MAAU that she is 16 weeks pregnant.

“She should have informed us earlier so that we could prepare another walker to replace her in the Games,” said MAAU deputy president Karim Ibrahim yesterday.

“Now it is too late to look for a replacement. We will have a council meeting in Ipoh on Nov 20 to will determine what action to take against her.

“We are disappointed with her as we will lose a sure gold medal in the women’s 20km walk in the biennial Games.”

The China-born Yufang made her debut in the 1997 Jakarta SEA Games and she bagged three silver medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m.

Two years later, she switched to the 20km walk event, winning the gold medal at the Brunei Games.

She has since dominated the walk event in the Games, winning gold in KL 2001, Vietnam 2003, Manila 2005 and Korat 2007.

In 2001, Yufang gave birth to baby boy and recovered in time to qualify and win a gold in the 2001 KL Games.

Karim said although they had lost a sure gold (through Yufang), MAAU were still confident of bagging eight gold medals in Laos.

MAAU are banking on high jumper Lee Hup Wei, walker Teoh Boon Lim, 400m hurdler Noraseela Khalid, pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu, hammer thrower Tan Song Hwa and the men’s 4×400m to deliver the gold medals in Laos.

Real: Ronaldo’s ankle not improving

MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo’s ankle had not improved by Wednesday, so the Real Madrid forward was set to consult his former specialist to treat the injury.

Ronaldo, who has been sidelined by the right ankle injury for nearly one month, underwent medical scans that showed no progress.

The Spanish club said Ronaldo will visit Professor Niek van Dyjk, the Holland specialist who treated the same ankle in 2008 when he was at Manchester United.

Real had been hopeful the 24-year-old winger would be available for tomorrow’s derby against Atletico Madrid but it appears the injury could be more serious than originally believed. Real trail Spanish League leaders Barcelona by one point after nine games.

Ronaldo has scored nine times in seven games since his record ‚94mil move from United, with Real winning every game he has played in.

Ronaldo injured the ankle during a Champions League match against Marseille and aggravated the injury while playing a World Cup qualifying match for Portugal on Oct 10. He was originally expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks. — AP

Fowler a star in late-career switch to Australia

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP): Robbie Fowler has found a place in the sun, one where he can still be a star on the field yet be anonymous off it.

The ex-Liverpool striker, nicknamed “God” by his fans at the Kop when he was at the height of his goal-scoring powers in the English Premier League, has reinvented himself as a football missionary in a two-season deal with new Australian A-League club the North Queensland Fury.

After an important goal to earn the Fury its first home win in Round 12, he moved to second place in the league’s scoring list with a double in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Gold Coast United.

Three goals in two matches have lifted his tally to eight at the midway point of Australia’s season. And it has dragged the club off the bottom of the table after it opened with three losses.

Not that Fowler thinks it’s because he’s only now finding his range.

“I think I settled in straight away. From the minute I touched down in Townsville, I’ve been made to feel like one of the lads,” he said after his two-goal performance on the Gold Coast.

“I’ve said right from the start, it’s not about scoring goals. The most important thing is getting three points. If I’m scoring, or somebody else is scoring, it doesn’t really matter.”

There were plenty of questions asked about his motives when the 34-year-old former England international chose not to pursue another Premier League deal and, instead, relocated his wife and four children to the transport and agricultural hub of 160,000 people in tropical north Queensland.

It’s hot all year and usually humid, even in the monsoonal downpours, and it’s about as far away from the premiership as he could have got in the English-speaking world.

There was speculation he would quit even before he started. After all, he’d reportedly turned his back on an earlier offer from the more glamorous Sydney FC – the same club where ex-Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke spent his time in the A-League.

Critics said Fowler was overweight and supposed he only wanted to holiday on the Great Barrier Reef, or was only in it for the cash.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson, a Scot, was never among the doubters.

“If he’s in holiday mode, I can’t even imagine what he’d be like if he was taking it seriously,” Ferguson told The Associated Press.

“Robbie’s an absolute professional. A star player – a marquee for us and the league. “He’s got too much status, too much pride to put at stake to come here and just have a holiday.”

Football Federation Australia, which relaunched the national competition as the A-League in 2005-06, is delighted with Fowler.

Average crowds have dropped across the league from a peak of 14,600 per match in 2007-08 to roughly 10,000 this season, but the FFA says that is because there are more teams and the venues are further afield.

Getting crowds of 7,000 to Townsville matches is a real coup, considering it is home to successful teams in national rugby league and basketball competitions.

“Robbie Fowler is a model marquee player,” the FFA’s spokeswoman Bonita Mersiades told the AP.

“Not only is he exemplary off the field and helping to build football’s profile in North Queensland and elsewhere, but he has been outstanding on the field.

“His class as a player is a joy to watch and his eight goals so far this season include at least four that are goal-of-the-season contenders.”

Gold Coast midfielder Michael Thwaites got a close up look as Fowler’s sweetly timed strike gave the Fury a lead in the 64th minute last weekend.

“He taught us a lesson,” Thwaites said. Only 2,616 were at the match amid a protest against Gold Coast United’s billionaire owner Clive Palmer’s decision to impose a cap of 5,000 on the crowd to save $100,000 in venue operational costs.

Michael Fenson, an Englishman wearing the Fowler No. 9 on his back, was among the sprinkling of fans wearing green Fury jerseys.

Fenson has lived in Australia for four years and has attended two A-League matches – both to see Fowler.

He said he’d been watching Fowler since he scored on first-team debut in the league cup at Fulham in 1993, then scored five goals in the return match.

“He’s as good a finisher as I’ve ever seen,” Fenson said moments before Fowler scored in the 64th, then he laughed and continued, “See. He’s got a gift.”

While he’s made himself at home in Australia, from where he controls his vast English property portfolio remotely, Fowler is being careful not to get too comfortable.

“I’ve been told that back home they reckon I consider myself Aussie these days,” Fowler wrote in a newspaper column.

“I posed for a photo to help out Australia’s 2018 football World Cup bid, agreeing to hold up a green and gold scarf. When I came over here, from the start I have said I will do anything that can help promote the sport in this country and I have kept my word.

“Of course England are a rival to host that year, so it hasn’t gone down well back home.”

So he wanted to set the record straight. “Obviously, being English, and with it being in 2018, I’ll probably be back home then, so I would like to see the World Cup there,” he said. “But if England don’t get it I think Australia would deserve it.”

In Sydney, the club had a Beatles tribute band playing and a red double-decker bus parked outside the stadium to welcome Fowler.

In north Queensland, rugby league territory, Fowler had “been a slow burner,” the Townsville Bulletin’s sports editor, Ray Andersen, says. But Fowler’s recent exploits are changing that.

“To be honest, he’s probably had a bigger impact on the rest of the league than he has here so far,” Andersen told the AP in a telephone interview. “He could walk around town, people aren’t mobbing him in the streets like they would be in Liverpool.

“Coming from England, where you’re in that environment where you’re life’s in the spotlight all the time, he’s probably enjoying keeping out of it a bit.”

The Fury is averaging 6,975 fans at Dairy Farmers Stadium, which seats 25,000 and is frequently full when the North Queensland Cowboys’ home National Rugby League matches.

But even the Cowboys fans have been curious, and with the NRL in recess and with the Fury winning back-to-back for the first time, Andersen and others are convinced Fowler will start pulling bigger crowds.

“By the end of the season, he’ll go down in the short history of the A-league as the most influential of the marquee players,” Andersen said.

Ferguson also has no doubt Fowler will leave his legacy in Australia.

“He’s genuine in what he’s doing here,” Ferguson says. “You only need to see the impact he has on the other lads to know that.”

Reds living dangerously

PARIS: English Premier League giants Liverpool are on the brink of going out of the Champions League after drawing 1-1 with Lyon on Wednesday.

The draw put Lyon through to the knockout stages and they were joined by Sevilla, who were held 1-1 by VfB Stuttgart but assured of a top-two finish in their group when Rangers drew with Unirea Urziceni.

Bad-boy keeper Halim vows to come good against Negri

PETALING JAYA: Kelantan’s colourful and controversial goalkeeper Halim Napi hopes to shut out Negri Sembilan in tomorrow’s Malaysia Cup final and put to rest his ‘bad-boy’ image.

“This is the best time for me to right all my wrongs on the field and win a champion’s medal for the first time in my career,” he said.

Halim first played for Kelantan in 1993 before moving on to other teams – Negri Sembilan, Perak, Kelantan JKR, Kelantan SKMK and Kelantan JPN. He returned to Kelantan in 2003 and has been one of their mainstays since.

“I have hogged the headlines for all the wrong reasons in my 15-year career. I was in a mess all this while … but I am glad that it’s all in the past. I have a chance to make things right this time. I don’t want to miss this golden opportunity,” said Halim.

It has been a rough path for the 38-year-old keeper, who survived a life ban (which was later reduced to just one year), unemployment and a legal tussle with a previous employer.

He even quit the game and vowed never to play football again at one stage.

This year alone, he has been red-carded twice, including the sacking in the highly-charged away game against Selangor on Feb 28.

Halim knows that the stakes are high in tomorrow’s final against Negri at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

“We have never won the Cup since the HMS Malaya in 1921. Kelantan have been in the final twice before and lost both times. But this time we hope it will be different,” he said.

Although Kelantan qualified for the FA Cup final against Selangor in April, Halim had to sit out the match because of suspension. The Red Giants won 4-1 in the penalty shoot-out after both teams were tied 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Halim said the state government’s support for the team – by declaring Sunday a state holiday – was an added incentive for the team and their travelling fans.

“We are all fired up and we promise to give our best. A lot of pride is at stake and the Kelantan fans have been very supportive of us,” he said.

Halim first won international recognition at the age of 17 when he represented Malaysia in the Asian Youth Championships in Bangkok. He received his first senior national call-up under Frenchman Claude Le Roy for a friendly against Bangladesh in 1994.

Kampar tragedy: Bridge was illegal, teachers missing

IPOH: The collapsed suspension bridge near the SK Kuala Dipang in Kampar that caused three schoolchildren to drown was an illegal structure and the teachers who were supposed to have been supervising them were not present, said an independent committee investigating the matter.

Perak Pakatan Rakyat’s investigation committee member Chang Lih Kang alleged that construction of the bridge had not gone through the proper procedure and that the Kampar District Council and Land Office were not informed of it.

“There were no submission of plans for the structure or any approval by departments such as Health, Fire and Rescue, the Enviromment, and Drainage and Irrigation,” Chang told reporters at a press conference here on Friday.

“The private consulting engineer must also issue a Certificate of Compliance and Completion to the district council and land office, which said they did not receive such a certificate,” he added.

Chang said the probe team had learnt about the matter after meeting the district officer, chief assistant district officer and the land office on Tuesday.

He stressed they were not blaming any parties yet and were merely stating facts gathered from the district council and land office.

Last month, three primary school pupils attending a 1Malaysia camp near the school — N. Dina Deve and M. Devatharshini, both 11, and 12-year-old V. Divyashree — drowned after the suspension bridge they were on collapsed into the Sungai Kampar. Nineteen other schoolchildren survived the tragedy.

Committee chairman V. Sivakumar also claimed that the three teachers who were supposed to have been supervising the schoolchildren when they were crossing the suspension bridge had gone “missing” prior to the incident.

Sivakumar said Devatharshini’s elder brother, Sarveswaran, who also took part in the camp, had told him this after a visit to the deceased’s home in Mambang Diawan recently.

“The schoolchildren were briefed on the rules on crossing the suspension bridge,” said Sivakumar, adding that only six students were allowed on the bridge at one time.

“The teachers who were on duty went missing and the 22 students got on the ill-fated suspension bridge without supervision,” he claimed.

Sivakumar also said that most of the teachers were attending a briefing inside the school building when the tragedy occurred.

The 1Malaysia camp was initially open to all post-UPSR pupils, he said.

“However, they did not have enough participants and they opened up the camp to Primary Four and Five students as well,” he added.

When contacted, state executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the Education Ministry-appointed committee tasked to investigate the tragedy was still probing the matter and urged the public to be patient.

“It is pointless to speculate now until the report is ready,” he said.

Kampar district officer Ahmad Kamaruzzaman Hamzah could not be reached for comments.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) – An Army psychiatrist set to be shipped overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood, Texas Army post Thursday, authorities said, a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded in the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States.

The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive in a hospital under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He was shot four times, and was on a ventilator and unconscious, according to military officials. “I would say his death is not imminent,” Cone said.

The man was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old from Virginia.

President Barack Obama called the shooting at the Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, “a horrific outburst of violence.” Some rushed to treat their injured colleagues by ripping their uniforms into makeshift bandages to treat their wounds.

“It’s difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas,” the commander in chief said. “It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil.”

There was no official word on motive. Hasan had transferred to Fort Hood in July from Walter Reed Medical Center, where he received a poor performance evaluation, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said generals at Fort Hood told her that Hasan was about to deploy overseas. Retired Col. Terry Lee, who said he had worked with Hasan, told Fox News he was being sent to Afghanistan.

Lee said Hasan had hoped Obama would pull troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq and got into frequent arguments with others in the military who supported the wars.

Faizul Khan, a former imam at a mosque Hasan attended in Silver Spring, Maryland, said he spoke often with Hasan about how Hasan wanted to find a wife. Hasan was a lifelong Muslim and attended prayers regularly, often in his Army uniform, Khan said.

The shooter used two pistols, one of them semiautomatic. Neither were military-issued, Danner said.

Video from the scene showed police patrolling the area with handguns and rifles, ducking behind buildings for cover.

Sirens could be heard wailing while a woman’s voice on a public-address system urged people to take cover.

“I was confused and just shocked,” said Spc. Jerry Richard, 27, who works at the center but was not on duty during the shooting. “Overseas you are ready for it.

But here you can’t even defend yourself.” Soldiers at Fort Hood don’t carry weapons unless they are doing training exercises. The Rev. Greg Schannep was about to head into a graduation ceremony when a man in uniform approached him, warning him that someone had opened fire. Schannep heard three volleys of gunfire and saw people running.

“There was a burst of shots and more bursts of shots and people running everywhere,” said Schannep, who works for local Congressman John Carter.

The uniformed man who had warned him ran to the theater. Schannep said he could see the man’s back was bloodied from a wound. The man survived, was treated and will be fine, Schannep said.

Cone said initially three people were held, and all have been interviewed. Authorities believe, however, that there was a single shooter.

In Washington, a senior U.S. official said authorities at Fort Hood initially thought one of the slain victims was the shooter, a mistake that resulted in a delay of several hours in identifying Hasan as the suspect.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters that were under investigation.

The Soldier Readiness Center holds hundreds of people and is one of the most populated parts of the base, said Steve Moore, a spokesman for III Corps at Fort Hood.

Nearby there are barracks and a food center where there are fast food chains.

The wounded were dispersed among hospitals in central Texas, Cone said. Their identities, and the identities of the dead, were not immediately released.

Amber Bahr, 19, was shot in the stomach but was in stable condition, said her mother, Lisa Pfund of Wisconsin.

“We know nothing, just that she was shot in the belly,” Pfund told The Associated Press. She couldn’t provide more details and only spoke with emergency personnel.

Hasan, whose family said he was born in suburban Washington, is single with no children. He graduated from Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps and earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 1997.

He received his medical degree from the military’s Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2001 and was at Walter Reed for six years for his internship, residency and a fellowship.

“We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events at Fort Hood today,” his cousin, Nadar Hasan, said in a statement issued on behalf of their family. “We send the families of the victims our most heartfelt sympathies.”

The attack happened just down the road from one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. On Oct. 16, 1991, George Hennard smashed his pickup truck through a Luby’s Cafeteria window in Killeen, Texas, and fired on the lunchtime crowd with a high-powered pistol, killing 22 people and wounding at least 20 others.

No other shooting at a military base in the U.S. has been anywhere near as deadly as Thursday’s. In 1993, a gunman at Fort Knox shot five civilian co-workers, killing three, and then fatally shot himself.

Around the country, some bases stepped up security precautions, but no others were locked down.

Covering 339 square miles (878 sq. kilometers), Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. Home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year, it is located halfway between Austin and Waco.
