WEST BANK: Heidi Levine, a 64-year-old veteran photojournalist with The Washington Post, was reportedly attacked by a group of masked Israeli settlers on October 16, 2026, while covering the annual Palestinian olive harvest near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah.

Matt Murray, executive editor of The Washington Post, strongly condemned the attack, stressing that Levine was visibly identifiable as a journalist.

Shamso Bibi's father, Fazal Sahibzada, said in his police complaint that his daughter received a call from a man named Kashif, also known as "Kashi," who asked her to leave her home in Taxila.

Shamso was leaving her car with her sister and brother when two men on a motorcycle opened fire near a fuel station. A bullet struck Shamso in the neck, killing her instantly, while her 15-year-old sister, who was seriously injured, was rushed to the hospital.

Following the journalist's claim, Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stated that if permission to meet him is not granted, more than two million people are prepared to take to the streets. The party has announced a long march to Islamabad on September 27.

Taxi driver Theuma confessed to hiring three men to detonate the bomb in the journalist's car, telling authorities that he had received $170,000 in payment from Fenech.

The journalist, originally from El Salvador, had been living in Honduras for over ten years and covered issues of local public interest. He had been under the protection of the National Protection System for Human Rights Defenders, Journalists, Social Communicators and Justice Operators (SNP) since October 2023, when he was the target of a series of threats and a kidnapping attempt, from which he managed to escape unharmed. Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. From 2001 to 2025, more than 100 journalists have been murdered here, 95% of which are still unsolved.

I have read all of my uncle’s books and writings. I have studied the memories of other martyrs. I think about martyrdom constantly,” Fereshteh Bagheri would say, motivated by the inherited legacy and the convictions she firmly upheld.

Saleh Bayrami, a 35-year-old Iranian media professional and freelance cartoonist, was killed on June 15, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike while driving through Quds Square in the Tajrish neighborhood in northern Tehran. He worked for several media outlet. Bayrami, who studied at Marlik University in Nowshahr, Mazandaran province, worked at Andisheh-e Pouya Monthly Magazine in Tehran for many years — since its inception in 2012. For the first time in the history of Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index, more than half of the world’s countries now fall into the “difficult” or “very serious” category for press freedom.

Paris: Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released its annual ranking of the World Press Freedom Index. Norway has consistently topped the list for 10 years, while Eritrea is at the bottom. Released on April 30, 2026, the report is considered a barometer of the health of global democracy. Its results are used to evaluate the policies and practices of governments, international institutions, and human rights organizations.

The United States also fares poorly in the index. The United States has dropped seven places to 64th, citing political interference, funding cuts to public broadcasters, and actions targeting journalists.

Continents like Europe top the list, but even there, conditions for journalists are becoming increasingly difficult. According to the report, many European Union member states are violating the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), which was designed to protect journalists' freedom.

India does not even make the top 150. India has slipped to 157th place out of 180 countries, down from 151st in 2025. India is behind its neighbor Pakistan (153rd). It also ranks below countries like Georgia, Cambodia, and Laos. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal also rank better than India in terms of press freedom. The list also includes Georgia (135), Israel (116), Cambodia (151), Myanmar (166), China (178), and Russia (172).

RSF concluded in its report that the working environment for journalists worldwide is continuously deteriorating. In particular, it expressed concern over the increasing misuse of criminal laws, such as defamation and national security, against journalists. The organization states that such legal provisions are being used as a weapon to intimidate journalists and suppress independent voices.

In its report, RSF clearly states that political pressure on the media is increasing globally. RSF warns that "the rule of law is collapsing, pointing to the increasing criminalization of journalism."

More than half of the countries surveyed are in the difficult or very serious category. This is the lowest level in 25 years for all 180 countries studied. This means that the state of press freedom has deteriorated in more than 100 countries worldwide compared to the previous year.

PEC Expresses Concern Over Sealing of UNI Headquarters in New Delhi

Geneva/New Delhi: Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), the global media safety and rights body, expresses concern over sealing of the office of United News of India (UNI, one of the country’s oldest news agencies) in New Delhi and urged the concerned parties to reconsider the decision.

According to the local media outlets, the closing down of the UNI office raised serious concerns over press freedom in the largest democracy on Earth. It was also reported that some staff members on duty were forcibly evicted and even female journalists faced manhandling by a team of Delhi police personnel.

The action was taken following an order from Delhi high court as it upheld the cancellation of the land allotment to the UNI for failing the condition to construct a composite office complex for the news agency and a few other media bodies. The particular plot of land, measuring around 5,289 square meters at 9, Rafi Marg, was allotted to the UNI management in December 1979 with the condition to erect the office building within a stipulated time period, but it was never realized

Police entered the UNI office and forcibly evicted the employees; it is alleged that female staff members were also mistreated during the incident.

So the government cancelled the permits in March 2023. The aggrieved party challenged the cancellation in the court, but finally it did not receive any positive direction. A notice pasted on the UNI office reads that the premises was taken over by the Union government in New Delhi on 20 March 2026 following the court ruling. Any entry, occupation, or use of the premises by any person without authorisation was also strictly prohibited which would invite legal actions, added the notice.

“It’s unfortunate that a pioneer news agency (which was founded in 1961) is facing such treatments in India. However, the UNI management had to follow the prescribed regulations. Since the digital media overpowers the traditional news outlets, which was aggravated after the Covid-19 pandemic, the news agencies needed a complete revamps in its functioning. Probably the UNI management failed to deal with challenges,” said Nava Thakuria, south Asia representative of PEC.

Barely half an hour after senior journalist Nadir Khan published a sensitive report regarding the alleged smuggling of LPG at Karachi Port, a case was registered against him. Prior to this, he was also physically assaulted on the street—incidents that have raised serious questions regarding the freedom of the press.

Pakistan's Human Rights Council (HRC) strongly condemned the actions taken against senior Pakistani journalist Nadir Khan. "It is highly surprising that such a sensitive and major news story was debunked within a short span of time—and without any substantive investigation—and that, instead, the journalist was targeted." The Council added that "the use of law enforcement agencies in this manner to shield the two prominent figures mentioned in the report constitutes a direct assault on press freedom and an attempt to intimidate journalists," said HRC.
