The great mystery of American politics is supposed to be what Donald Trump, a Queens-born billionaire who puts his name in gold on his own buildings, has in common with an ordinary blue-collar worker in Beaumont or Youngstown.

I will save you the suspense. Nothing.

This is a man who inherited $400 million, managed to bankrupt a casino — a business where customers literally hand you money — settled a $25 million fraud case over Trump University, and spent a career stiffing the plumbers and electricians who did the actual work on his properties. In Texas, we have a word for that kind of businessman, and it is not populist.

And yet the welder votes for him. The waitress in Lubbock votes for him. The guy who lost his pension when the plant moved votes for him.

Are they stupid, ignorant and naive? That is what a lot of people in Washington and Los Angeles think, and that attitude is exactly why they vote for him.

For 30 years, working people in this country have been lectured at. They were told globalization was good for them, even as the factory closed. They were told to learn to code, to move, to be more cosmopolitan, while their towns were hollowed out and their kids got hooked on opioids. They were told their church was backward, their accent was funny, and their problems were their own fault.

Then along comes a fellow from Queens who says, "You are right to be mad. The whole thing is rigged."

Well, it is rigged. The problem is, he is part of the rigging.

The working man wants health care he can afford. Trump tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act and hand the savings to his country club buddies as a tax cut.

The working man believes you pay your bills. Trump's business model has been to not pay his bills and call it smart.

The working man wants a fair shot for his kids. Trump's idea of a fair shot is hiring undocumented workers to mow the fairway at Mar-a-Lago and then denouncing undocumented workers on television.

So what do they actually share?

Resentment. Pure, Texas-sized resentment.

The working man resents being looked down on by a political and cultural elite that never asks him what he thinks.

Donald Trump resents being looked down on by a Manhattan elite that never let him into the good clubs because they thought he was tacky. Which he is.

That is the whole marriage. "They don't respect you, and they don't respect me, so let's get 'em."

It is not economics. It is not policy. It is a revenge pact.

That is an old con. I have seen it in every courthouse square in Texas. A fellow in a cheap suit sells snake oil by telling you the doctors are all crooks and only he can cure you. You buy it not because you think the snake oil will work, but because you are so mad at the doctors you will try anything.

Trump did not convince working people that he is one of them. He convinced them that he is against the same people they are against.

And he sells them a $40 hat that says America First and was made in China. And charges shipping.

That is not populism. That is just an expensive hat.

In 2026, there are between 938 and 989 billionaires in the US, according to three sources (Forbes, thegobalstatistics and wealthrank). Elon Musk is the only trillionaire or is on the cusp of becoming one. In 2024, there were 813 billionaires; now 75 more if we go with the 989 total. The elite list is growing and growing. Now with venture stocks in AI and those huge data centers, we will have more. These people are primarily based in California (the high tech people-Page, Zuckerberg, Huang, Ellison, Gates to name a few), New York (Bloomberg, Ralph Lauren, Robert Murdoch, Edwin Chen), Texas (Musk, Walton family, Koch family, Michael Dell, Robert Bass, Jerry Jones and more), and Florida ( Bezos, Peterfly, Shahid Khan who also owns the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Reyes Brothers, Jude and J. Christopher, both sons of Mexican immigrants, Josh Harris who also owns the Washington Commanders and the Philadelphia 76ers and Mickey Arison); Trump may be listed in either New York, as above, or Florida. Warren Buffet lives in Omaha, Nebraska and is considered the 10^th richest among billionaires. Combined, these 989 billionaires have a net worth of $9.23 trillion dollars. Less than 50 of them are under the age of 50 with some 400 or so, over the age of 70. There will be more billionaires in the years to come not just from new wealth but from inheritance. I want to focus on a billionaire in sports, namely Dallas Cowboy football team owner, Jerry Jones and the only one team not owned by any billionaire(s), the Green Bay Packers.

I’m not addicted to professional football, only boxing, but I do watch games especially when I have company. Sometimes I do not relish conversation with them because invariably they ask about my health, not what book I just published. This always happens near my birthday when all kinds of friends and family begin to come over for best wishes. Some of them, as in all families, are hard to get along with, and at my age, I have stopped trying to be nice, diplomatic, prudent, calm, or patient. The last time this happened was last week. I wanted to watch the Green Bay Packers play the Dallas Cowboys. They have had a rivalry going on forever it seems. Because they belong to different leagues, one is NFL the other AFL they do not play against one another as often as do the same league teams. Anyway, I wanted to tell you why the Green Bay Packers are the team to emulate across professional football but that cannot and will not happen anytime soon.

Non-Profit Status

Back in 1942, just before I was born, the National Football League (NFL) was comprised of non-profit entities under section 501 (c) 6 of the Internal Revenue Code. They organized themselves that way since 1920. That meant that as a business league the did not pay taxes on revenue nor did they have to disclose executive salaries and other financial details of their operations. They had a lot of criticism over that.

In 1966, the NFL merged with the new group, the American Football League (AFL) and had themselves added to the list of tax exempt business leagues under the category of professional football leagues. Other professional groups like the National Hockey League ($80 million in revenue) and Professional Golfers’ Association ($91 million in revenue) followed suit. Filing tax returns, as everyone should know, is a private matter. Personal tax information is private and cannot be disclosed by the IRS unless it is under court order. The courts are what Trump has been using to delay disclosure of his wealth empire. So, whatever revenue flows through the professional football teams is private. Such non-profit business leagues do have to file an IRS form, 990, and they did in 2012. On that form they claimed that they took in $327 million in revenue from April 2012 to March 2013. They reported assets of $788 million. Since they must do some charitable work, they reported giving out $1.4 million, mostly to subsidiaries like the NFL Foundation and the NFL Alumni Association and some much smaller amounts to the March of Dimes and Big Brothers.

In 2015, the professional football leagues switched over to a for-profit organization. They still do not have to disclose executive salaries or other financial details because they write them off as business expenses. Roger Goodell, the national football commissioner is paid $40 million in salary and bonuses, as an example. The high salaries of some players, especially quarterbacks, is widely reported in the press, like Patrick Mahomes current salary of $63.9 million or Dak Preston’s at $60 million or receiver George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers at $19.1 million. I will forgo more of that here and get back to the Packers.

The ones who get paid the least until recently, are the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Most of these beauties have to have another fulltime job to afford being a cheerleader. They used to get paid $15 an hour for the 4-hour regular game time. In 2019, the pay went up to $400 flat fee. When Netflix aired its America’s Sweethearts documentary exposing this terrible wage scale, they finally unionized into the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader Association (DCCA) . Pay money went up dramatically. With special events and regular game pay, a cheerleader can now earn from $2,500 to $5,000 per game plus event fees if they sign up for those. Most of the veteran cheerleaders get those salaries. The cheerleaders do not travel to away games or the new international games. They only perform at 9 home games. If there is post-season playoffs and the Super Bowl featuring the Cowboys, they can perform for pay at those.

City-Owned Green Bay Packers

It is the only professional football team not owned by a person or group of persons. They are owned collectively by the 190,000+ residents of Green Bay Wisconsin who also own their football field, Lambeau Stadium, that sits on 92 acres. No property taxes paid because it is city-owned. The team itself is a non-profit corporation, having been grandfathered in when the NFL abandoned that type of 501 (C) 6 organization. They have been so since 1923. They are the 32rd richest team in the league. The shareholders do not get dividends, only residue money from all the people that come to games and spend, plus jobs with the team and stadium. The stadium seats over 81,447 spectators. Ticket prices vary but they go from $209 for those way up you can’t see much to several thousand dollars for the 50 yard line seats in row 58. Suite prices are another matter but very valuable as revenue earners. There also is the Green Bay Foundation that does lots of philanthropy and programming in the city among its residents and some state-wide.

Comparison with the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboy owner is Jerry Jones (plus a son and daughter) and this team is ranked number 6 in value at $9 billion. He bought the team for $150 million back in 1989. His net worth is estimated at $19.5 billion and he is 82 years old. The Cowboy corporation pays some taxes, mostly they have huge write offs. Among the biggest expense write offs are the executives, the football players, the lawyers, the accountants, and the lobbyists, to name a few. Depending on how it is done, political donations are not tax exempt but reportable to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). In 2017, Jones of the Cowboys, a Republican, donated $1.1million for Trump’s inauguration. He did it again in 2024 but that amount has yet to be disclosed. He is not the only billionaire owner of a professional sports team that donates money to the Republican US president or political party. Tilson Ferretti of the Houston Rockets, like Jones, has given a million; Miriam Adelson of the Dallas Mavericks another million, Betty De Vos and family of the Orlando Magic, $1.6 million, and Tom Ricketts of the Chicago Cubs, $1.6 million. Jones was outperformed in terms of money donations only by Elon Musk who gave $239 million to the pro-Trump America PAC. Peter Theil is a close 2^nd in contributions giving $150 million for Trumps 2016 campaign. He sat out 2024 but in between did help other Republicans with $130 million in 2018 and another $850 K in 2020. Both Musk and Theil have profited greatly from those donations. Musk has built the largest satellite company in the world, Starlink and Space X all funded with US government contracts. Theil has gotten over $5.1 billion in government contracts for his company, Palantir, that specializes in surveillance.

AT&T Stadium

Jerry Jones does not own the stadium. He has an almost forever lease and owns everything inside that is for sale. Everything is for sale even outside in the parking lot. There are 12,000 parking spots. The range of prices to park is from $75 to $100; he averages $960K per game or event just in parking fees. Who knows how much he can siphon off from the cash payments as opposed to credit card charges. The giant video screen at the very top of the stadium is the size of a basketball court and is 4-sided so everyone can see it including those in the top rows and standing room only sections who cannot see the tiny players but get top views as if they were home watching the game plus there are constant re-plays of key moments. Sandwiched in between plays are commercials that other corporations pay millions to advertise. Those 10,000 or so in each of the standing room only sections buy more alcohol that those seated. Alcohol sales generate some $60.1 million in sales per game. The stadium is a gigantic ATM machine for Jones.

Among the most loyal fans are Mexicans mostly from Monterrey who arrive in charter buses for each game. Each person pays between $3k to $5K for this luxury trip. It is a luxurious experience with plenty of food, drink, video entertainment, and sleep chairs if you need to rest and not look out. They sit where ever they have bought a ticket for that is a charge. built into the overall trip price. The next most loyal fan group are the tailgaters which in recent years have been discouraged from continuing the party with new rules. No open fires, no cooking once the game begins, no coolers with drinks, and must be cleared area by end of 3^rd quarter.

He got the City of Arlington to pass a revenue bond so the property owners could pay for it with taxes but the city went after a higher sales tax rate, hotel tax, visitor tax, car rental tax, and fees for touring the place during the off days which are not many. Besides football games, events go on at the stadium with regularity such as the World Cup, boxing, Taylor Swift concert, wrestling, college football games, and even rodeo events for example. Jones makes more money with every event even from selling the brand name to A T & T. Lots of other cities with professional football teams have done or are doing the same. Let the taxpayers pay for stadiums. The owners become billionaires.

A T &T stadium can seat 80,000 people plus another 20,000 more when they open the “standing room only” sections at opposite ends of the stadium. Each section had a batch of cheerleaders to also entertain the crowds. Regardless of where they sit or park or drink and eat, they pay for everything which are not items sold a low prices. A hot dog will run you $7.50, a hamburger $13.50, a water (20 oz.) costs $8.25, soda pop is $8, draft beer is $10-$11, craft beer is $12-$16, sometimes a menu value beer (Miller Lite) is sold for $5. Nachos are $10 and $12 with jalapeños. A partnership with Legends Global , Cowboys and New York Yankees, serve full meals at high prices in select seating areas and suites.

The richest team above all others are the Denver Broncos which are owned by Rob Walton of the Walmart family of Waltons. He is worth some $121.3 billion, the richest NFL owner of all. Included in this ownership as a limited partner is Condoleezza Rice, if you recall the name.

Obviously, the professional football team owners making so much money have a much greater influence on national and local politics than the ticket buyers. They can buy many politicians who need campaign money incessantly. They can get policies passed to benefit them more than regular citizens would benefit. They have lobbyists who work at this every day in DC and in Austin as do all other owners in their state capitals. We would all be better off with each host city owning not only the stadium but also the team itself. Go Green Bay Packers.

On Election Day, Native Organizers Alliance Fellows will stay to ensure everyone can vote free from fear or intimidation.

At the 33rd Annual Comanche Nation Fair, held in Lawton, Oklahoma, Comanche families -- Tribal members, families, friends, and visitors -- came together to share meals, visit with relatives, and showcase our shared culture and heritage. We joined Rock the Native Vote to register voters and encourage families to start or continue a new tradition: honoring our ancestors by using our voices and empowering future generations to vote.

In Wisconsin, the Oneida-led community Get Out The Vote Rally was another huge success. The event was filled with everything from election and candidate information, registering new voters, and making a plan to vote to food, music from a live DJ, photo opportunities, giveaways, prizes, and more. Family, friends, neighbors, and community members celebrated the importance of being informed, engaged, and heard and working to get out the Native vote.

These images and events are just a few ways our work touches the community, bringing people together, and mobilizing the Native vote. I wish I could show you everything. I wish you could be there at each event, for every rally, phone bank, canvass, poll watch, ride to the polls, and everything else we do.

Earlier this month, a federal judge dismissed the Justice Department’s lawsuit challenging Virginia’s in-state tuition law.¹ That means roughly 9,800 undocumented college students in Virginia can keep paying the same rates as their classmates.¹

Immigrant youth have organized for years to win these laws, making higher education more affordable for working-class students who were being priced out because of their immigration status.

Our Powered by Students campaign aims to train more students to organize their campuses and lead campaigns that win real change for all of us. We have to keep this momentum going. Will you chip in $10 to help power our work today?

Since June 2025, the Department of Justice has sued every single state offering in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants. Virginia defended its law and became only the second state to win in court.¹

Across the country, more than 525,000 undocumented students are enrolled in college. Roughly 180,000 of them are in states that have already stopped offering them in-state tuition, and another 210,000 attend school in states being sued right now.¹

Native families have experienced forced family separation and the government’s total disregard for the safety and welfare of Native children. For over 250 years, U.S. history has a trail of detention of families and careless disregard for the impact on children from colonialism to slavery to the WWII Japanese internment.

A new report shows that between January 2025 and early August 2026, ICE locked up more than 8,750 children, including more than 560 babies and toddlers.^[1]

Young children are still in detention.

Even though many immigrant children have family members in the U.S. who are not detained, they’re often forced to represent themselves alone in immigration courts, and more than half of children who are released from detention are deported.

So we’re supporting recently introduced policies (below) that would expand immigrant children’s rights and stop ICE from detaining children.

Please take a few moments to send a message to your members of Congress, demanding they block ICE from arresting and detaining children, require attorneys for all children in immigration court, and keep immigrant children with their families.

DEMAND CONGRESS PROTECT IMMIGRANT CHILDREN

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there is no “safe” amount of time for children to be held in detention. Children should never be arrested or put in cages.

In this session of Congress, U.S. Representatives introduced policies such as:

The Reimagining Safety Act, which would abolish ICE and Border Patrol

The Dignity and Due Process for Children Act, which would ban federal immigration agencies from detaining unaccompanied children and require an attorney to be present before kids sign anything affecting their immigration status or rights

The Find Our Families Act, which would make sure that people in detention stay in touch with their families and attorneys, and require federal agencies and detention facilities to notify detainees’ families and legal representatives when they’re taken to a hospital or another facility

Additionally, U.S. Senators introduced:

The Keeping Immigrants and Destinations Safe (KIDS) Act, which would block the Department of Homeland Security from detaining children

The HELP for Separated Children Act, which would ensure detained parents can arrange care for their children and stay in touch with them. It would also allow parents to participate in their immigrant children’s court proceedings and more.

The Oversight, Protection, and Enforcement Notification (OPEN) Act, which is similar to the Find Our Families Act described above

Please sign to send a message to your Senators and U.S. Representative, demanding they support and pass policies to protect immigrant children -- such as the KIDS Act, OPEN Act, Find Our Families Act, HELP for Separated Children Act, Dignity and Due Process for Children Act, and Reimagining Safety Act.

The Last Honest Man? Why James Talarico Could Be America's Next Mr. Smith

There are two kinds of politicians who arrive in Washington.
The first come to master the system. The second come to change it.
The tragedy of American politics is that, sooner or later, the system usually wins.
That is why the growing fascination with James Talarico, the Texas state representative whose speeches have spread far beyond his district, deserves more attention than another election-cycle profile. Whether he ever serves in the U.S. Senate—or even seeks the presidency—is almost beside the point. He represents something many Americans have stopped believing is possible: a politician whose moral convictions appear to precede his political ambitions.
In an age when consultants poll every syllable and authenticity is manufactured by media teams, Talarico has become an unlikely national figure by sounding as though no consultant wrote the script.
He talks about public education because he taught in a public school.
He talks about faith because it is part of his life rather than part of a campaign strategy.
He talks about democracy as though it is something to preserve instead of something to exploit.
Agree with his politics or reject them entirely, but it is increasingly difficult to dismiss his sincerity.
That alone makes him unusual.
For decades, American politics has rewarded performance over principle. Candidates are expected to project certainty, cultivate outrage, and transform every disagreement into an existential battle. Social media has accelerated the trend, turning public service into a never-ending audition for the next viral clip.
In that environment, quiet conviction almost feels subversive.
Talarico's speeches often sound less like partisan warfare than civic instruction. He invokes Scripture without using it as a weapon. He frames policy disagreements in moral rather than tribal terms. His critics call him naïve. His supporters call him authentic. Both observations may contain some truth.
Idealism has always looked naïve until history decides it wasn't.
The comparison to Jefferson Smith, the fictional senator in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, is almost unavoidable.

Frank Capra's 1939 masterpiece was never really about politics. It was about corruption colliding with conscience. Jefferson Smith entered the Senate believing institutions could still honor their ideals. He discovered instead that power protects itself with remarkable efficiency.
Nearly nine decades later, Washington has only become more sophisticated in rewarding conformity. Lobbyists possess greater influence. Campaigns consume more money. Political parties demand stricter loyalty. Every controversy becomes content before it becomes legislation.
If Jefferson Smith arrived today, he would probably trend on social media before reaching his office.
The question is whether he could survive.
History offers little encouragement. Washington has an extraordinary capacity to sand away rough edges. Reformers become insiders. Outsiders learn procedural shortcuts. Campaign promises evolve into legislative compromises. The city has defeated more idealists than elections ever have.
That is why the enthusiasm surrounding Talarico says as much about the country as it does about the candidate.
Americans are tired.
Tired of outrage masquerading as leadership.
Tired of politicians who seem to belong more to television than to their constituents.
Tired of hearing every election described as the most important in history while watching public trust sink to historic lows.
What many voters appear to crave is not ideological purity but moral credibility.
They want leaders whose positions emerge from convictions rather than focus groups.
That is a remarkably low bar.
Yet it has become surprisingly rare.
None of this guarantees that James Talarico would become an effective senator or president. Character matters, but competence matters too. Governing is harder than inspiring. Speeches do not pass legislation. Integrity alone cannot balance budgets, negotiate treaties, or build governing coalitions.
The danger in elevating any political figure into a symbol is that symbols eventually encounter reality.
Still, symbols matter.
They remind a cynical nation what it once expected from public life.
Perhaps the real lesson of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was never that one virtuous politician could cleanse a corrupt capital. It was that citizens should never stop demanding virtue from those who seek to govern them.
That expectation has faded.
Maybe James Talarico can help restore it.
If he succeeds, his greatest accomplishment will not be winning an election.
It will be convincing Americans that integrity is still politically possible.
Washington does not merely need another Jefferson Smith.
It needs citizens willing to elect one.

Latino Power, Voting Rights, and Election Protection

Dear LULAC Members, Partners, and Allies,

Election Day is less than two weeks away. Early voting is underway, challenges at the polls are already emerging, and LULAC is preparing for the largest election protection operation in our organization's history.

Join us for The Road to the 2026 Midterms: Latino Power, Voting Rights, and Election Protection. We want to hear directly from YOU--LULAC leaders and members--about what you're seeing in your communities, while making sure everyone knows what resources are available to protect voters before and on Election Day.

We will hear updates from LULAC National President Roman Palomares, CEO Juan Proaño, a key national litigation coordinator, and key partners leading get-out-the-vote and election protection efforts across the country. Discussions will cover challenges voters are facing during early voting, ongoing voting rights litigation, community mobilization, and LULAC's bold plan for November 3, including our National Election Day operations in Washington, DC.

We will also highlight resources available through the Vamos a Votar website.
