It's metrics and predictions time! In-Stat says the VoIP market gamed 3.8 million households in 2006, with wholesale revenues of $1.1 billion last year increasing to $3.8 billion in 2010. The Yankee Group puts the SMB VoIP market at $200 million last year growing to $1.3 billion in 2009. And the Dell'Oro Group predicts that the PBX market will exceed $7.5 billion in 2011, with most of the growth coming in IP PBXs.

“As retail VoIP expands, wholesale VoIP will accelerate quickly,” said In-Stat analyst Bryan Van Dussen, in a statement. “The largest segment remains international VoIP, but we expect the market for local services to surge from 12 percent of all revenues to 27 percent by 2010.”

Recent research by In-Stat also predicted that consumer VoIP adoption will drive wholesale VoIP revenues to $3.8 billion by 2010 from $1.1 billion in 2006. What’s more, international wholesale VoIP termination/origination revenues is experiencing declining growth rates. Over the long-haul, wholesale VoIP is expected to experience significant migration of TDM services throughout the forecast period, and become a majority of the international market by 2009.

Residential customers can try out VoIP in any number of IP telephony service offerings from both traditional carriers and cable companies. Infonetics projects that the number of residential and small business VoIP users in North America alone will reach 39 million by 2009. Europe is expected to account for 42.5 million by 2009, with the number of users in Asia projected to grow to 49.9 million.

The worldwide telecommunications markets are set for extraordinary growth, doubling from $123 billion in 2004 to $282 billion by 2010. Communications represents opportunity for expansion of economies. The Internet based communications systems are vastly improving the efficiency of the supply chain for the largest 5000 companies worldwide.

The uncertainty in the telecommunications markets has been resolved. Digital, IP, Ethernet will replace all other protocols. The convergence of networks is to IP, the Internet, Ethernet. It works seamlessly, it is reliable, it is resilient, it is fast. Now the issue is how fast the TDM networks will be replaced with the new technology.
