Viatalk has many more features then Sunrocket had as well. They give you the ability to make 2 outgoing calls at the same time on one phone number.  Another cool feature i have with the viatalk voiponline casino service is the ability to change my caller ID to say whatever you choose. So you can actually set it to say different things for different callers. If you already have a voip modem then no problem, viatalk will let you use your own equipment and give you all your hardware settings. It’s gotten easier to re-program the voip modems as voice over ip service has become more popular lately.

I recently switched to viatalk voip since my sunrocket is now dead. Viatalk sent me out a nice new Linksys 2 port Voip modem. They assigned me a temporary number and I’m working on getting my old number ported over to my new viatalk voip provider. I’ve called them a couple times to ask tech support a couple questions regarding setting up advanced voicemail settings. They give you the advanced features that you normally have to pay extra for on voicemail. Features such as a separate greeting for people on one of your group list that you setup in your control panel.

Apparently the Apple iPhone might have a littel nasty bug that is stopping itunes users with massive collections of songs. Turns out that the iPhone will not syn correctly with an external itunes library. This is a big problem for myself as well as others who have over 60 gigs of music in their collections. I was forced to use an external HD for my itunes library sinec i only have a macbook pro with a 100GB drive. I for sure will not purchse an iphone untill they fix this bug. www.pqdvd.com says:

Well there goes the end of the VoIP provider SunRocket. Turns out they were the largest Voice Over IP startup company next to Vonage. I actually have a SunRocket line for one of my personal lines. Not to worry they say that one of the bigger giant VoIP companies will take over the business. I guess SunRocket couldn’t handle the 200,000 customers they gained in a year. ViaTalk is now offering a great promotion for existing SunRocket customers. They will buy out your contract and give you a free phone line with a new annual price of $199 per year. I looked into Via Talk and they offer some great features in their control panel. They are reliable and seem to have good reviews. I will probably switch my SunRocket line to this company. SunRocket, one of the largest start-up companies offering Internet phone service, has ceased operation and is moving its customers to one or more other companies, a person briefed on its status said yesterday.

A message on SunRocket’s customer service line said the company was “no longer taking customer service or sales calls.” Executives of SunRocket, which is based in Vienna, Va., and had 200,000 subscribers as of April, could not be reached for comment.

The development underlined the struggles of start-ups trying to make a business out of providing Internet-based phone service, telecommunications industry analysts said.

The companies face enormous pressure from the biggest competitors in the industry, both cable and traditional phone service providers. The cable companies in particular have made a strong push into the telephone market by offering the service as part of a package with television and Internet access.

Start-ups like SunRocket and Vonage, the largest and best known of the group, tend to offer only phone service, and they do not have the ability of the larger companies to ensure quality of service because they do not operate their own telecommunications lines, said Richard Greenfield, a media analyst at Pali Research in New York. “They only have one product and they can’t control quality,” Mr. Greenfield said, adding that the business is “extremely challenging.”

According to estimates from TeleGeography Research, SunRocket is the second-largest Internet phone start-up, after Vonage, with a 2 percent market share.

In April, SunRocket said its 200,000-subscriber milestone was a testament to customers’ embrace of Internet phone service, which allows calls to be transmitted as data over the Internet.

As a selling point, SunRocket offered potential customers a year of unlimited calling in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico for $199.

Have you noticed a huge decrease in email spam lately? I definitely have about 75% less spam then i used to. I was happy at the moment but also thought that it was just a coincidence and the spam would resume soon. I recently found out that the “Spam King” Robert Alan Soloway was arrested a couple days ago and charged with money laundering, fraud and identity theft. He allegedly violated the CAN-SPAM act of 2003, which makes it a crime to send unsolicited, unwanted e-mail in the U.S.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Federal prosecutors are going to require Soloway to return almost $800,000 worth of proceeds from his spamming adventures (he may also have to forfeit his pretty Mercedes too – sweet!).

Soloway is so hated in anti-spam circles that there is much rejoicing over this news. There are even several websites which have plenty of dirt on this 27 year old from his driving records to how to call his mother.

He faces decades in prison but it is not clear exactly how many years it will ultimately be. At least he is sitting in a little cell somewhere with no computer access instead of kickin’ back in his posh Seattle apartment.

However, even though a top spammer has been taken offline, spam will continue to flow. Soloway is not the only top spammer, just one of dozens. In reality, his arrest is probably just a moral victory, because it certainly does not signal the end of spam.

Alright Congratulations, You’ve made the switch to the most modern and cost-effective telephone solution of the century. Now that you’ve successfully signed up and received your startup kit box in the mail, what next?

How do you install and hookup your new VoIP line? Well it doesn’t take a telephone service engineer or a computer nerd to install the new VoIP modem and get you up and running. You can easily do this job yourself in under 30 minutes depending on where your phones are going to be. The majority of consumers can do this job themselves. While there is always professional installation available from he telecom company or any local telephone service wiring company. This is really not necessary if you follow the simple step by step instructions that came with your modem start-up kit.

If your keeping all the same phones place as you had before then it’s straightforward, just plug your modem phone jack into one of the existing telephone outlets, and turn the modem on, thats it.

Learn The Basics

The biggest obstacle that you will face when switching from traditional phones to VoIP is changing the telephone wiring inside your home. It may sound daunting but it is actually a pretty easy process made easier if your home was built in the last half-century and easier still if it was built in the last decade or so.

Before you start tearing out your phone jacks, cutting random phone wires and connecting them to other wires it’s important to know what you are doing. You probably don’t know anything about wiring a telephone system but don’t worry, because you don’t by any means need to be an electrician or an expert to figure out how to make these small adjustments.

Modern Homes: Telephone service is provided over a pair of wires. You’d be hard-pressed to find a home built in the last 50 years that doesn’t have at least two pairs of wires for the telephone lines. However, this does not mean that the wiring is suitable for two phone lines.

Each phone line is connected to a pair of wires usually consisting of a solid colored wire twisted together with a white wire. The white wire will probably have a stripe running its length that will coincide with the solid color wire that it is paired with. The standard is to use the blue wire twisted with the white wire (with a blue stripe) as the primary pair or “Line 1.” Any further lines will generally be set up with “Line 2” on the orange pair, “Line 3” on the green pair, “Line 4” on the brown pair and “Line 5” (if that’s a possibility) on the gray pair. Newer homes will likely have either Cat (short for category) 5 or Cat 3 wire. Cat 5, which is the most common, contains four pairs of wires while Cat 3 can hold different amounts of pairs (usually between three and six). The outer jacket of the wiring can come in a range of colors but blue is popular for Cat 5.

Older Homes: If your home has been around for a decade or longer you may find a completely different setup. “Quad” wiring contains four wires colored red, green, yellow and black. The red and green wires generally make up the primary phone line and sometimes the yellow and black will be utilized as “Line 2.” However, the use of “quad” wiring for more than one line can cause “crosstalk” between the two lines because the wire pairs are not twisted together. For this same reason, “quad” wiring is also more prone to pick up radio frequency interference from nearby transmitters. If you find “quad” wiring in your home you will want to seriously consider replacing it with Cat 5 wiring. This is when you might want to consult a professional.

Really Old Homes: If your home was built more than 50 years ago then you might find two or three wires twisted together with the same dark-color insulation and no outer jacket. If the wires are still working, the insulation is in good shape and you just don’t want to deal with replacing it all, then you can probably leave them alone for now and use what you have. But, if the wires are insulated with rubber, you will need to replace them because the insulation is likely to crack and crumble with any disturbance. Once again, if you need to rewire the house, seek professional assistance.

Various Wires: Any non-standard wire (doorbell wire, lamp cord, speaker cable, antenna wire, stranded wire, etc…) that is being used as telephone wiring needs to be replaced with Cat 5 wiring. Telephone wire should be solid copper. Say it with me now – if you don’t know how to rewire your home, seek professional help.

Connectors: You will likely not need to splice any wires together but if you need to for any reason, don’t use wire nuts. They do not make a secure connection and will allow moisture into the splice corroding the copper. Only approved communication connectors should be used for connecting wires. Gel-filled, moisture-resistant connectors are available and vital if the wires will be outdoors or exposed to excessive moisture. Make sure to clip off any bare copper ends when using these connectors so that all of the wires are completely insulated.

Ok, Now Wal-Mart will be carrying the Skype software disc and headset products. I knew this was coming eventually. Wal-Mart the Retail giant always wants to get a pice of the pie from any successful electronics products. Look at what happened to the iPod.

In my opinion Wal-Mart is a perfect vender for Sype service. They have many low to middle class people shopping there who may need to talk to family and relatives in other states and countries. Call phone service is so spotty lately that it doesn’t work that well indoors depending on which provider you use of course. The cheap VoIP alternative of Skype is an excellent option for these people
