  <summary type="text">Teaching the public Kubb - a medieval Scandinavian lawn game</summary>
  <content type="html">6/22/2012 - 6/23/2012 - Our Viking Festival at the Hjemkomst Center teaches people what life was like 1000 years ago in the Viking Age.  One aspect of the Viking life was playing games.  Kubb is a lawn game where wooden batons are thrown at wooden cubes until one team kills the &amp;quot;king.&amp;quot; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Warning:  Kubb is addictive and learning to play will make you want a set of your own.  It takes about 10 minutes to learn, and after you learn you will teach others to play at the festival.  We need Kubb teachers for 3 1/2 hour shifts:  Friday 10-1:30 or 1:30-5; Saturday 10-1:30 or 1:30-5.   &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The Midwest Viking Festival is a very fun and educational yearly event.  You will be able to see swordfighting, learn Viking board games, write your name in Old Norse runes, and see blacksmiths at work, just to name a few things.    This year it will be combined with the annual Scandinavian Festival, so you will meet hundreds of people from all over the country and Scandinavia.  There will be the usual vendors indoors and the Scandinavian food is a definite favorite.  Volunteering, of course, grants you free admission to the festival.   </content>

  <summary type="text">Showing people how to felt wood for the Hjemkomst Viking Festival</summary>

	Because of the paralyzing and chronic condition, persons with ALS often have immeasurable amounts of difficulty doing common daily tasks or are simply unable to do them. &lt;strong&gt;A volunteer could play an important role in reducing stress and increasing quality of life by helping in the home with one or all of these activities&lt;/strong&gt;:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Clean&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Errands&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Gardening&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Household Chores&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Light Maintenance&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Meals&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Pet Care&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Scrap Booking&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Snow Removal&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Visit Person with ALS or their children&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;
		Yard Work&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
	Day: Prefer Wed &amp;amp; Thurs and open to Mon &amp;amp; Tues&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
	Time: Any time between 5:00 &amp;amp; 9:00 p.m.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
	Frequency: 2-4 times per month, 3-4 hrs.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
	For safety reasons and to equip volunteers in this position, a screening process and training is required that includes: volunteer application, interview and orientation (1.5 hours), reference checks, background check.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
	Must be 18 years or older.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
	Although it is not contagious, ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in muscle weakness and paralysis.&lt;/p&gt;</content>
