The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.

Students, take the time to create an account. This will allow you, and certifying organizations, to record your community service time in a location where there is a permanent record of the service you performed.

Non-profits, take the time to become a certifying organization so that you can record the time that volunteers to your organization provide community service. This will allow them to have a permanent record of the time that they have served, as well as be recognized for that time served.

Please see: http://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/index.cfm

volunteerstudent.org is not associated with The Presidents Volunteer Service Award program in any way. We just eel that it is a great way to create a record of volunteer community service and give recognition for that service to members of the community that come forward to donate their time.

Our goal is to have one sponsor per month. This sponsor will have a “run of the site” sponsorship for that month.

In order to ensure that the sponsorships are fair any potential sponsor can e-mail volunteerstudent.org an “e-mailed bid” on what they are willing to pay for the next month’s sponsorship of the site anytime between the first and twenty-fifth of the month prior to when they want to sponsor.

The bid process is twofold. First we pull any bids that we feel don’t meet our standards (ex: adult materials) Then of the remaining bids, on the 26th the high bidder will be notified they won and all other bidders will be notified of who the high bidder was.

By the first day of each sponsorship month the high bidder will have to get a banner to us and provide us with the link target (as well as make payment for the month by the third of the month).

Bidding is by month. There are twelve bids per year. Multiple months can NOT be bid. Yearly/Monthly site statistics are available to view by request.

Volunteer Student was set up to give LOCAL non-profits the ability to reach into social networks of students with LOCAL community service opportunities.

That does NOT mean that national non-profits can’t benefit from this platform, but the goal is to provide students access to LOCAL community service opportunities that are “right around the corner” from where they live.

We only ask that when you post an opportunity (and they are free to post) that you do the best you can to provide as much data as you can to the potential student volunteer. It’s better for your posts and it will help students narrow down to what you are offering with less back-and-forth between you. The easier you make it for the student, the better your response rates will be.

If the position is as a swimming instructor in the local aquatics center then make sure you use the “Cert Required” tag on the posting, but also make sure that you include what certifications are required in your postings description (ex: “Sr. Lifesaving AND WSI”).

If the task is tutoring, then list the subjects that will be tutored (ex: “Math: pre-algebra and algebra I”).

One quick note. Before your postings become visible to students your account will have to be approved. If you want to speed that process up, send us an e-mail with a contact phone number after you create your account so we can call and confirm you are a non-profit.

Since this is free for you, there is only one thing that we ask of you. Please let other non-profits know we are here and that we are attempting to help them, and the students.

The truth about this kind of thing is that students will come as long as there are postings from YOU. If the postings die down, then the students will ignore those that are here. So please, share the site and help us help you, and the students.

In order to help you help us in sharing the site, please feel free to use the flier below (click to open in a new window, then download the image and share it. Thanks):

Our tag line Where Students find LOCAL Community Service Opportunities says it all.

We are about helping students find LOCAL opportunities to volunteer for non-profits and not-for-profit organizations. Every job opportunity should list the City, State and ZIP Code so that students can find opportunities to serve their local community.

Whether it’s the City Rec Center, a Youth Center, a Religious Organization, a National Organization, a Hospital, a School Tutoring program, a Mentoring program, or well just about any non-profit or not-for-profit organization, we will allow them to post their volunteer positions here for free.

Students get to search and respond to those opportunities for free.

Because we allow religious organizations to post here, we make sure that the student knows if the position is secular or religious (the filters). Why? Because working in a Church, Temple or Mosque that serves the elderly food is really a secular activity, differing from working as the religious school support staff for religious instruction.

The best way to use the site is to leverage the search by distance feature.

What if there is nothing in your area? Well we are just starting out, and the best way to make sure opportunities from your local area get seen,if they are not here,is to call local non-profits (and the city) and ask them to use this site to post their positions.

It’s free for them, and for you.

So please, share this site with non-profits, not-for-profits, cities, religious institutions, parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and others that may be able to suggest to non-profits that they post opportunities here. And please share volunteerstudent.org on your social networks as well.

As for who paid to develop the site and pays to operate it by default so that it can run for free… Well we are listed below:
Education 4 Kids, Inc.

H2O Pool Products, Inc.

BIA Solutions

RKids
