Ive always wanted a wacom Cintiq, seems like the right sort of tool for the job of digital colouring, how ever i felt it lacked true mobility I wanted it to be a versatile tool i could get out and draw and colour when ever and where i am so i recently decided to get myself a microsoft surface pro 3. Marry that bad boy up with Manga Studio 5 and you got yourself a perfect digital drawing campanion, heres a couple of warm ups ive done with it testing the waters...

A little late to post this but managed to complate Jake Parkers 31 day drawing challenge of Inktober for anyone looking to get involved in it next year heres the challenge break down:

31 Days 31 Drawings

Every October, artists all over the world take on the InkTober drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month. I created InkTober in 2009 as a challenge to improve my inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.

Anyone can do InkTober, just pick up a pen and start drawing. InkTober rules:

1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).

2) Post it on your blog (or tumblr, instagram, twitter, facebook, flickr, Pinterest or just pin it on your wall.)

3) Hashtag it with #inktober

4) Repeat

Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. INKtober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.

Art Drop 2014

The purpose of Art Drop (According to Jake Parker) All artists, (that means students and professionals, painters and cartoonists, sculptors and illustrators, animators and fine artists, EVERYONE who creates) this September 2nd* is World Art Drop Day. Wherever you find yourself that day, drop a piece of your art and tell someone where to find it. The world needs this right now. We need to feel a little more connection to each other and there's nothing like the bond two random strangers can make through the act of creating and giving. I recently just finished a cross-country art drop this summer and it was exhilarating. The emails and responses I received from the finders ran the gamut of funny to touching. I want that for everyone! Here's how it works: Draw a picture and hide it somewhere. Take a photo of either the art or the hiding spot or a combination of both. Post the image, the city you dropped it in, and a hint on any social media of your choice. Be sure to included the hashtag: #artdropday Then move on, hoping someone finds it. After watching the fun unfold last year with Jake Parkers Art Drop decided to get involved in it. Littered the streets and shops of Bristol with various pieces I had done especially for the event, many of the pieces were found within the first hour of hiding as the people contacted me through various social outlets but a few are still mysteriously out there…

Anyway had a wicked time doing it and will make next year even bigger and spread wider. Thankyou everyone that helped and to those that found pieces

The Chase

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of being invited to The Chase gig, they asked me to come down a little bit early so I could help em out with something. Whilst the other bands were doing there sound checks The Chase asked me to do a few little drawings on a flip chart to go with a song of theirs. They gave me a few briefs but I pretty much had complete control over what I could do so had a killer time with this nice little challenge. Id never heard the song so wasn’t sure how it would all play out but in the end the gig was great and the pictures worked better than I thought they ever could of, this band is definitely one to watch out for. George Lucas

So a few months ago it occurred to me that I hadn’t watched the Star wars film in literally years, like cant even remember the last time I watched ‘em long so figured id sit down each night after work and watch one until ive watched them all.
One of the reasons why I think ive put this off for so many years is because i remember these films being amazing, I guess I was kinda worried that it would be one of things that you return to and it’s a bit of a disappointment but I was wrong! (may I add a lot of the viewings were done with Nachos and cheese, perhaps the best snack to go with a film viewing!)

Sat down watched A new Hope. Incredible, saw it on new levels of cool and weird, never quite realised how much of a sex-pest Han solo is, hilarious! Empire strikes back, as a kid perhaps my least favourite, not anymore bumped up to the top! Excellent film dark in so many places and on so many levels! Return of the Jedi, used to be my old favourite, still cool some great scenes and wacky stuff going on but the ewoks are not somewhat quite how I remember them… I mean really Lucas?... teddy bears helping out in the battles?!

Id like to say this was my least favourite thing of the star wars saga but no. I hadn’t watched this in a long long time, in fact I’ve only watched this film once and Id been putting this off for a long time and even more so when I decided to watch all the films, Star Wars : Phantom Menace, this just went from bad to more bad. I wanted all the characters to die except Darth Maul. It was that bad it made me wanna root for the bad guy, im going to be honest it was infact that bad that I had to turn it off as soon as some blue fat guy was introduced that shook his head a lot.

I felt bad that I had switched it off but there was no way I could’ve gone back to it. Definitely not after having such great memories of the first few films, so fresh in my memory. I sat down and put on attack of the clones, I don’t even feel bad in saying this I didn’t get far in this one either, so many scenes of annoying Anakin and princess no personality. Im not going to lie. Never made it through this one either. I started to get more and more bitter, how did George Lucas fall so far from Grace, how can you go so wrong with something!? i didn’t even bother with Revenge of the sith and all the other faff of the cartoon sequels, I wanted to watch em all. I tried, I failed. pfft I lost all interest the moment Return was over and that’s when George Lucas should’ve as well. He should of just stopped, relaxed and spent some of his time and money coming up with fresh new ideas rather than destroying every single saga and world he’s created (Indianna Jones rant is for another day) either that or chilling out and enjoying his much deserved rest! Recently hes announced he wont be returning to block buster film making for the foreseeable future. Too little too late ol’ Lucas. Too little too late.

Doubt ill be trying that again, wanted to do a background to go with this but may have to wait for another day as after getting my head around this new process i didnt realise it would be take that long!

Not a massive fan of the light within the original photo but didnt really have time to wait for the perfect light. An Ode to Mr Frosty

all the years that ive been on this big blue and green marble id like to think that ive learnt a thing or two but can also admit that im still learning somethings along the way. One of the first things i was taught is to have patience. sure at times its tricky to try and relax when theres something you want or some place you wanna go or something you wanna see but at least these days theres (for myself at least) far less desires and far greater management of those instinctial emotions. As a kid this was not the case, for instance one christmas we got a 'Mr Frosty', this was a an ice lolly making toy everyone my age wanted ready for the summer! i mean this toy could be revolutionary no more hearing a little tune and chasing some big truck miles down the road. Then having to que up with mobs of kids fighting over the last the Zapp or Fab.. With The Mr Frosty you could just head to your bedroom and get an ice lolly when ever you want, breakfast, elevenses, lunch, midnight snack! absolute freedom. Or so i thought. Summer didnt take long to come about, as always as a kid you kinda remember it as christmas, chocolate, summer and the day came to use this toy. With my mouth watering and butterflys in my stomach I got it all out of the packaging ready to get myself some ice lollies, Then the burble burst... i was told id have to wait for some water to freeze in the freezer...

As a kid you dont think of these logistics its one of the freedoms of youth you dont have to forward think or plan you just go with it, but this is also a curse. A curse that meant i had to wait for Water to turn to ice... Water to turn to ice? to a kid thats a very long time! thats like i might as well put the Mr frosty away till next summer long. Looking back i should of just put it away for an hour or two, but i didnt. I did something far worse. i still wanted to play with the Mr Frosty test it out, see what its like . Instead of using the recommended 'ice' in the mechanism. i decided to add the crayons i had been using to draw with earlier, it was awesome a crazy trippy sequence where rainbows would literally be pouing out of this smug looking snowmans chest, he looked like has was having fun, i was having a blast for an hour or two until that water became ice, excited more than ever now after experiencing with it for a bit. I put the ice into the mechanism, like a pro ready to create some sweet sweet cool happy joy! Viva la revolution, gone the days of ice cream vans.

How i wish i could tell you joy was created But there was no joy. From that one silly crayon playing event The only thing that would ever came out of Mr Frosty's chest were horribly cold, beautiful coloured bits of rubbery salty crayon goop. I killed Mr Frosty before he had even time to live. That day i learnt the virtue of patience.

Growing up...

Growing up is hard. As a kid I used to love going for really big walks in places i never knew, normally getting lost for hours. Although it wasnt 'getting lost' back then. It was going on an adventure, exploring something new, fresh and exciting, coming across scary old buildings that clearly looked haunted, or at least done up to look like a dangerous half falling down building by the government to keep adults away but really there is a multi million pound secret lab a mile underneath the surface of the old building with a secret passage and lift to get to it behind a bookcase or inside a fire place.back in those days you took it for granted but they were the best times, having that sort of natural instinct to imagine rather than see whats really there is incredible.

Its the one thing ive tried to grasp onto through moving to new places, meeting new people, starting new jobs, each one is just a different adventure waiting to be explored...
even if it isnt as exciting as coming across a secret lab hidden in an old run down shack.

Love my magical, fun films with kids getting into wacky adventures and into mysterious situations but Narnia just never really seemed to do it for me. It should be up my street but i think the kids were just far too annoying, youve been shoved through a cupboard into a mystical realm where the inhabitants are at war with each other, why do they have to whine and moan so much!?.. anyway it was on the other night so figured id do a little picture of it.
