Voodoo Fest 2011

The Voodoo Fest 2011 concerts have ended, but the Witch Doctor is still keeping his promise to give coverage to as many of the artists as possible.  Try as we might, we still managed to miss a few of the artists which is why we’re publishing Wrap Ups this week.  We never want to forget that of the most important aspects of the voodoo experience is the platform it gives to up and comers  and local New Orleans artists.   Today we’re taking a look at The Stone Foxes and  A-Trak.

Voodoo Fest Welcomes The Stone Foxes

The Stone Foxes were formed in 2005 and spent a few years developing their signature musical style.   Their music is a throwback to classic rock from the late 60s infused with a 60s interpretation of the blues.   Their version of I’m a King Bee was picked up by Jack Daniels for their Tennessee Honey.    This is another band the Witch Doctor was unfamiliar with before Voodoo Fest….  Not any more.  These guys are real.  Check out the Video.

Voodoo Fest 2011

Odd Future Plays Voodoo Fest 2011

Odd Future is a shortened version of the band’s actual name wich is “Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All”, often fans abbreviate the name to OFWGKTA, but most people just call the band  the shortened name “Odd Future”.  The band plays a type of music we can call alternative hip hop.  The group was originally envisioned and is led by it’s creator Tyler.   The group is like a sea of talent that comes and goes and includes from time to time rapers including Hodgy Beats, Early Sweatshirt,  Mike-G, Dono Genesis, and Frank Ocean.   In addition to the rap talent, the band is driven by producers Left Brain, Matt Martians, Syd the Kyd.  There are also other members who are not musicians, but who have important places in the day to day activities of the band.

In addition to playing with Odd Future, many of the band members perform freely outside of the band which may be partly responsible for it’s continuous innovation.

TV on the Radio Plays Voodoo Fest 2011

TV on the Radio is one of those bands whose music doesn’t fit neatly into any specific category.  Their music runs from punk to jazz to electronica, and to soul.  They were originally formed in New York in 2001.  They’re playing the Voodoo Music Experience this year without one of their original members.   Gerard Smith passed this year after a bout with lung cancer.

The One AM Radio

Hrishikesh Hirway  is the visionary behind The One AM Radio.  He writes songs and music and has a soothing voice.  Unlike a lot of artists, he does most of his own recording.  He plays several instruments with a style that touches the arenas of folk rock electronica and ambient music. Hrishikesh was born in Massachusetts and studied at Yale.  Here’s a link to The One AM Radio Official Website.

Voodoo Fest Enjoyed The Limousines

The Limousines are based out of the San Francisco Bay Area.    They was formed in 2007 and is built on the talents of  Giovanni Guisti and Erick Victorino.  They became popular internationally due to the popularity of two singles Very Busy People and Internet Killed the Video Star.  Their one and only full length album Get Sharp became available in July of 2010. Shortly after the release of Get Sharp, 2010, the band signed with Dangerbird Records. You can learn more about the Limousines at their official website.

Happy Halloween

It’s Halloween! The Witch Doctor’s exhausted from a month of covering Voodoo Fest 2011.  We’re going to change things up a bit today and do an ODE Halloween with the top 10 Zombie Songs. Voodoo Fest 2011

New Orleans is filled with the sound of music from Voodoo Fest.   The last two days have been non-stop excitement with music starting late morning early afternoon.  For most concerts, when the concert’s over, the music stops… but that’t not the case at Voodoo Fest.  The producer in conjunction with Verboten arranged Deja Voodoo After Parties which ensure that the music is delivered New Orleans style!   That means it lasts until 6:00 AM when the street cleaners take over the French Quarter preparing it for another day of festivities.

Final Day

Theres a lot to see and hear on the final day of Voodoo Fest for 2011.  An artists that’s symbolized New Orleans’s music for a lifetime,  Dr. John, took the stage at 3:00 imbuing the last day with the authentic sound of true New Orleans music.  Before the night’st over, the crowd at Voodoo Fest 2011 will be entertained by Cheap Trick, Ray Davies (of the Kinks) and Soul Clap.  The first two Cheap Trick and Ray Davies don’t need any introduction from the Witch Doctor, but the third artist Soul Clap may not be a name you’re familiar with.  The Witch Doctor’s excited to provide a little insight about this talented duo tonight.  What’s more, when the concert’s done, you can catch them again at the Deja Voodoo After Parties.

Kreayshawn Blazes Voodoo Fest

Some critics complain that Kreayshawn exploites black culture.  One West Coast artist wrote and produced a track named Uncle Otis criticizing Kreayshawn for using the word nigga.   Kreayshawn insulted Rick Ross, calling him fake, but lated said her words were due to a misunderstanding.   Kreayshawn isn’t someone who seems to be too good at following direction, and within a few days she began insulting Ross again in a broadcast on UStream.  The Witch Doctor’s got a thing for rowdy misbehaved artists and Kreayshawn’s been taking that track since she was just a child.  Read more about here in our coverage or at Kreayshawn’s official website.

Blink 182 takes the Stage

Blink 182 has sold over 27 million albums since it was formed back in 1992. Their debut album called Cheshire Cat was a small success, but its follow-up, Dude Ranch, sold over one million copies.  Today they headline the Voodoo Music Experience following Snoop Dogg.  You can read more about Blink 182 at their official website here.

Today’s the last day of our Countdown to Voodoo Fest 2011.  The voodoo experience starts tomorrow.  Artists from the world over are making their way to City Park New Orleans in a Halloween weekend celebration.  If you’re going to be able to make it to New Orleans this weekend, stick with VoodooRules.com. Today we have the good fortune to cover a home town talent – Ivan Neville and DUMPSTAPHUNK.     We can’t think of a better way to transition from the countdown to the festival than with music of New Orleans’ own Ivan Neville!

Ivan Neville’s DUMPSTAPHUNK

It must be something in the water of New Orleans..  How else could you explain all the musical talent emanating from this place. Today we are taking a little look at  Ivan Neville.  Before you make a mistake on this one.  No.  He’s not one of the Neville Brothers.   He’s of the same lineage though. He calls two of the Neville Brothers Uncle.  He is also the son of none other than Aaron Neville.   So it probably won’t come as a big surprise that he plays several instruments, has an incredible voice, and  is powerful songwriter.

Although he comes from a long line of talented musicians, this guy’s got the bones to make it without help from anyone.  He’s delivered on four solo albums.  He’s had a top 40 hit “Not just Another Girl.”  In case you can’t tell, the Witch Doctor could go on for a long time about Ivan Neville and DUMPSTAPHUNK, but even with all the mojo I can muster, there’s nothing I can say that the music won’t say better.

Voodoo Fest New Orleans, LA, (VoodooRULES.com) October, 27, 2011 –

Voodoo Rules Adds Work by Claude VonStroke and Soul Clap to its permanent collection. The two artists are scheduled to Play Voodoo Fest 2011 and are headliners in the Voodoo experience After Party Scene Deja Voodoo orchestrated by Verboten. The Claude VonStroke mix is from We Love Space. The Soul Clap mix is from the Electronic Music Festival 2011. The live mixes have been made available for free download to the public from our Content Delivery Network provided by Amazon.com.   The mixes are slated to be moved to our streaming CDN arriving in early November.

Voodoo Fest 2011

Voodoo Fest 2011 starts in just TWO days!  In this last week before the festival.  Today’s our last day of  coverage on the stages and schedules.   We’re going to recap the whole thing for you in the next two days while still giving you deeper insight into more artists.

The Lynn Drury Band is playing Voodoo Fest for the first time this year.  They take the  vooodoo experience stage on Friday October 28th!  ”Her sound combines the twang and grit of her native Mississippi and the funky grooves of her adopted home of New Orleans.” She won the best emerging singer/songwriter in 2004.
