One of the greatest strengths of VortexBox is its user forum. An army of tireless volunteers that work to help new users and veteran users alike solve problems and share information. Up until now we have been using the free simple::press Forum software. This works OK but has quite a few problems, as many frequent posters know.

A lot of users have suggested we use vBulletin. I checked it out and vBulletin is a really great system. vBulletin is not freeware though, and we need to buy a license and purchase some better web hosting to run it on. This will cost about $600. I have put a donate meter on the main page and all donations to VortexBox will be going directly to the user forum upgrade. The quicker we get the money the quicker we can get a new forum!

So if you love the VortexBox user forum dig deep; even a donation of $15 or $20 will help us reach our goal!

It’s been a while since we released a new version of VortexBox and there are a lot of small fixes and tweaks in this new version. There is the usually updates such as a new Kernel and SqueezeBox server 7.6.1. There are also a lot of small updates such as increased UPnP player support. VortexBox now supports the latest Samsung TVs and the BeoSound 5 from Bang & Olufsen.

We added a lot of user requested features such as a one click restore button in the USB backup manager. We also added faster mp3 mirroring at the request of VortexBox users. This version has been tested with new products from Sonos and Logitech including the new Play:3 to ensure these devices are fully supported.

VortexBox 1.10 supports the new VortexBox Orbiter, a fanless player that automatically finds your VortexBox.

We are pleased to announce the release of VortexBox 1.9. This release adds updated versions of many of that packages that make VortexBox work so well. This version includes a new kernel for better hardware support. The DVD ripping package has also been improved and of course we added the latest version of SqueezeBox Server (7.5.4).

The DAAP server has been updated to support AppleTV and you can now stream music direct from your VortexBox to your Apple TV including cover art. VortexBox can even stream your FLAC collection to AppleTV even though AppleTV doesn’t support FLAC.

We are pleased to announce the release of VortexBox 1.8.In the last release we added DVD movie ripping now we made it better. VortexBox now identifies the DVD and names it accordingly. VortexBox can also create an mp4 mirror of your DVD with a Windows Media Center xml file. This works great for viewing movies in Windows Media Center. You can now select the length the DVD tracks you want ripped. This is great for TV show DVDs where you want to rip all the tracks greater then a certain length.

We have also added the latest version of SqueezeBox Server (7.5.3) and a bunch of other fixes and upgrades. Thanks again to the VortexBox community for all their help testing the new version of VortexBox.
