Why did you want to work at Voxer?

I always loved using walkie-talkies as a kid, and when I first started using Voxer it was like reliving my childhood. But, very quickly, I understood that the potential of the technology was so much greater than as just a free walkie-talkie app. After speaking with Tom Katis, our CEO, I learned that his vision wasn’t to solely build useful software for the iPhone and Android devices, it was to build a next-generation carrier at the scale of Verizon and AT&T.

I want to work here because of the versatility of our product; there is no other communication tool in the world like Voxer. Users can speak live, have every audio message recorded, and send text, photos, and location data. Voxer has merged many of the messaging functionalities that people need into one app.

Why did Voxer create Voxer Pro?

From the time I joined the company, we knew that there were millions of people using Voxer for business purposes - we could see clusters of users talking frequently across our network during business hours to get work done. We also heard from business users that in order to begin using Voxer for commercial purposes, they needed more.

At its core, and similar to paid e-mail solutions such as MS-Exchange, Voxer Pro provides businesses and individuals control of their data, ownership of their data, and a specific identity. Voxer Pro offers an admin portal that makes uploading and managing a company’s users simple. Admins have the power to create and edit unique Teams - similar to e-mail distribution lists - to allow groups, like a Sales Department or Store Managers, to easily communicate with each other. Voxer Pro is also a secure communications network that allows businesses to protect their sensitive data.

This is just the beginning. We will be launching many more features in the near future that will make Voxer Pro even better for business use.

Why are you excited about Voxer Pro?

I can’t tell you how many times people tell me that “voice is dead.” Voice is not dead; in this age of an overwhelming demand on our time, traditional, interruptive phone calls are dead. We believe that by incorporating the non-interruptive eqtiquette of texting into Voxer, we have created a technology that allows the richness of voice communication to adapt to the modern world.

1) More personal than texting – you can convey personality and humor far more easily with your voice than you can with a text.

2) Faster and more convenient than texting – it’s much faster to leave a vox than write a text. In addition, if you have your hands full, it’s much easier to press a single button and leave a message than it would be to type out everything that you want to say.

3) You have the option to vox and/or text (and send photos!) - texting is available on Voxer, so you can use either format depending on the situation. Voxer gives you the option of voice or text (or photo) which traditional texting does not. It also won’t use up cell phone plan minutes or text plans when you message!

4) Great for friends in other time zones - unlike Skype or phone calls, Voxer has the same etiquette as texting, so there’s no pressure to immediately reply. It’s a great way to stay in touch without having to coordinate times to chat or set aside time for a live conversation.

5) Different than traditional voicemail - unlike a typical voicemail, when you vox you don’t need to wait for the phone to ring over and over or listen to a person’s entire greeting before you can leave your intended voicemail message. Worse, they may actually answer! Awkward! Whenever you don’t want to have a live conversation with someone, but merely want to convey a message or share a humorous comment that they can listen and respond to at their convenience, Voxer will allow you to do so quickly and personally.

Walkie Wednesday: Unblock Contacts

We wanted to share her letter with you.

To Voxer –

With no agenda or expectation of a response, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for creating Voxer. I have been living abroad for about four years now, and this is the first application that has really allowed me to feel like I am not so far from home. Although I am not prone to homesickness or losing touch with my friends, Voxer has taken my experience of staying connected to a whole new level.

Having played volleyball in college, many of my former teammates are all around the world playing professionally. While we maintain a constant presence on Skype, WhatsApp, and other communication platforms, coordinating across time zones has always proven difficult with our varied schedules. Voxer is by far the easiest, the most convenient, and the most fun form of conversing.

Why do I feel passionate enough about this to send you an email? Well because I can hear my friends’ laughs, their hilarious silent pauses, their pshaws, their judgmental tisk-tisks and many other reactions, tones, and emotions often lost in written text. The fact that you have created Voxer has added such a human element to my interactions with my friends around the world; I think I can write on behalf of at least 30 people in South Korea, Germany, Poland, Russia, Japan, Azerbaijan, Spain, Brazil, Italy, and the US that Voxer has drastically improved our lives and our experiences living abroad.

I cannot tell you how many voxes I have where my friends finish by saying, “OH MY GOD I LOVE VOXER.” It is also amusing to go back and listen to the timid messages of people at first saying, “Am I doing this right? I don’t really get it. Oh my gosh I HATE how my voice sounds” to them casually transitioning to a natural conversation as if you are on the phone with them. People cannot hide behind written words (as in typed messages), you cannot go back and erase, and you instinctually express emotion in your voxes. In layman’s terms, Voxer is the first application that allows you to feel as if you are having a real-time conversation.

I have never written to a company before to thank them for their product; however, in this case, I whole-heartedly feel the need to give a much deserved “thank you” for filling my world with more laughter, love, friends, and joy. Thank you for having the courage to take your idea to fruition. Thanks for having the awesome little Pacman icon inch along as you listen to messages. Thank you for bringing the “life” back into communication.

Thank you and good day.

Regards,

He told us that Voxer helps him stay connected in the world; he has a friend in Germany, and without Voxer, they wouldn’t be as close. Here is his Voxer story.

1. How did you learn about Voxer?

One day I thought to myself, “I wonder if there’s a good Walkie-talkie app on the Google Play store. One that will let me keep in touch with friends from other countries and is free to use.” After I searched — and I really liked Voxer’s “Walkie” logo — I read about it. I loved the description, learned that Voxer has no ads, and decided to download it.

2. With whom do you use Voxer?

I use Voxer with friends who are local and international; I use Voxer to talk to my friend from Germany. Without Voxer, it was incredibly difficult to talk to her because of the time difference. Plus all other forms of communicating — phone calls, e-mail, etc. — made consistent communication very difficult. Now with Voxer, she and I conveniently talk almost every day. The app helps make me feel closer to her.

3. What makes Voxer your preferred communications app?

The ease of use, the fact that the app is 100% free, and, perhaps most importantly, it works GREAT! I love the fact that when you are recording your message, your friend can hear you talking in real time! It’s an efficient and convenient way to make plans without having to deal with the inefficiencies of phone calls.

4. Would you recommend Voxer to friends and family? If so, why?

Yes, in fact I try to get everyone I know to use Voxer! It works phenomenally and it’s free!

Walkie Wednesday: Dark or Light Background Option on Android!

In versions 1.0.9 and above, Voxer on Android now defaults to a dark background. Users now have the option to choose from either a dark or light background! You can learn how to switch between the two by performing the following steps:

Select the setting button (on the upper right side of the screen) > Select “Themes” > Select “Voxer Light” or “Voxer Dark” option

Voxer uses address book matching to help you find your friends who are also on Voxer. Make sure to add your current phone number to your Voxer profile. This feature will help us match you with other Voxer users. Here is how to add your phone number:

To access your profile on your iPhone, go to your chat list > tap the “Chat” button (in the upper right corner) > tap “Edit your profile” > enter phone number.

To access your profile on Android version 1.0 and above, go to your “Me” tab > tap the blank phone number field > enter phone number.

This is the story of her “Voxer Family”.

1. How did your Voxer family start?

Meet the Voxer family: Lisa, Sherry, Kimberly, Wendy, and Angela (they all live in Chicago), Jen (Washington D.C.), Lenbirgh (Las Vegas), Donnell (Texas), and Dionne (New Jersey). We are originally from Chicago and have known each other since college. My friend Lisa suggested to me that we create a Voxer group for these friends from long ago. We agreed that it would be a cool way to keep in touch with without using the telephone. The people that gravitated to the idea became members of our “Voxer family”!

2. What role does your Voxer family play in your life?

Voxer has made a huge impact in our lives. The first thing that we do each morning is grab our iPhones & Androids and chat on Voxer. We “vox” all day about everything from “remember when” to “we should plan.” We knew each other in college but didn’t hang out until 22 years later, all because we discovered Voxer. In December 2012, we had a Voxer/pre-Christmas party and Lisa gave each of us “Voxer Books” as Christmas gifts. It was comprised of all the funny phrases that we said or talked about, illustrated by a funny picture. It was hilarious! Lenbirgh laughed until he fell behind the couch! We had a ball that day.

3. Why do you prefer Voxer as a form of communication?

We are all in our mid 40’s and often have so much on our minds that we can’t remember where our shoes are, let alone our phone numbers. With Voxer, one click starts a conversation. Voxer’s features are amazing: we can either text, send a live or stored audio message, or send picture messages, depending on what’s convenient at any particular moment. I think that this will be the way we will communicate as time moves forward. We love it!

4. Why would you recommend Voxer to your friends and family?

Voxer is convenient, easy, and fun! It allows us to send quick messages to those we love. We want our friends and family to know that Voxer brings people closer and reminds us that we are never alone in this world; we have the capability to connect with others in real time. Thank you Voxer for bringing us together as a family!

A Voxer Story for Valentine's Day

A couple of months ago, Jackie reached out to us. She thanked us for the role Voxer has played in her life. We wanted to share her story with you.

1. What role did Voxer play in meeting your significant other?

We had seen each other around town over the years, but we were never friends. It wasn’t until August of 2012 that we began to see each other regularly once a week through mutual friends. I always thought she was beautiful, but never my type, maybe even out of my league.

I casually mentioned Voxer in a conversation with a local friend in LA in September 2012, who, I found out, soon mentioned it to Amber. As you know, when you download Voxer, a list of all the people in your phone who have also downloaded Voxer pop up. My name was on that list for Amber, and she Vox’d me, “Hi Jackie Jones.” Not long after that, I asked her to have coffee and sit under the stars. Cheesy, but I really meant it! :P

2. What is unique about Voxer that has made it impactful in your relationship?

I found that because we weren’t necessarily able to control ourselves to appear “perfect” — we couldn’t simply “un-send” a message that we had begun — we were able to be real with our feelings and responses to each other.

3. What are your future plans with Amber?

We will be moving in together in a few months and plan to stay together for however long forever is. The offer is still up for a Voxer representative to attend our wedding.

4. What reasons would you give for recommending Voxer to others?

It helps to stay connected around town, for serious conversations, and when traveling separately. Our society is losing its sense of touch with texting and Facebook, and Voxer, for me, is an authentic way to touch base with the ones you love when timing can be an obstacle.

Check out this special message to VoxNation from Jackie and Amber!

We’re continuing to reinvent Push-to-talk with the best looking and functioning app we’ve ever created.

Last year our big emphasis was on improving the entire service, and this year has come to life in our Android 1.0 release. We radically overhauled the design of the Android app with a very cool looking interface. The navigation and design have been dramatically enhanced, and we have also improved the overall performance of the app.

When you get into the app you’ll see some of the key functionality has moved - we now have a tabs bar with a “Chats” tab, a “Friends” tab and a “Me” tab. We’ve made it easier than ever to set up chats, see your existing chats, and to access your personal information.

We created a video that explains the changes you’ll find in our latest and greatest Android app; we hope that you enjoy it.
Thanks to a friend of mine, I learned about Voxer. My first reaction was, “Why do I need a walkie-talkie?” It seemed a little silly. Aren’t texting and phone calls always the easiest ways to communicate?

But, as I soon learned, it’s often easier to vox. I’ve found that when I have something quick and simple to say, there’s no need to make a call, wait through rings, hope I’m not interrupting the person on the other line, and, as often happens, leave a voice mail. Now, I can click open the Voxer app, send a Voxer message, and I’m done. The message either comes in live, or it’s conveniently waiting for my friends and family whenever they’re ready to listen. No interrupting, no major time lost.

And since I talk faster than I write, I’m also finding that I prefer voxing to texting. Because I’m using voice communication, there’s also no confusion in the tone of what I’m trying to say. It’s silly-crazy how useful this app has been to me.

Voxer has opened new opportunities for communication in my life. As a military wife, I have many friends and family who live in different time zones. It isn’t always easy to find time to talk, and Voxer makes conversing with them much more possible. Most importantly, Voxer has allowed me to be able to keep in touch with my husband during his deployment. I continue to tell my friends and anyone I meet, especially military spouses, about this newfound tool.

Voxer is far and away the best communication app that I have every used. It’s so easy that even my 5-year-old can use it. It’s reliable. It’s clear. It’s instant. It has worked without fail while other apps have not. With Voxer, I have been able to have conversations with those I love, perfectly, every single time. Its impact on all of our lives has been beyond measure.

Semper Fi,

Laura

Voxer -- Keeping People Close, From Far Away

About a month ago, we were contacted by Voxer super-user Michael Andrews. We wanted to share his story with you through his guest blog post.

For months, a few friends were trying to get me to sign up for Voxer. My aunt and uncle had stayed in contact with their son, stationed in Bahrain in the US Navy, through Voxer. Eventually, I decided to check it out. I downloaded the app in March 2012, and was immediately drawn to it, wondering, “why am I so late to this party?” It is such a genius idea, especially for friends scattered across the country who want to stay in touch.

My closest group of friends, many of whom are in the pictures above, met at James Madison University; some are now based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, while others are in Miami and New York City. We had regularly stayed in touch throughout ordinary days using Gmail, Gchat, Twitter, and text messages. Unlike those other forms of communication, though, Voxer has given us the unique ability to hear each other, while keeping an instantaneous feel. Voxer has allowed us to have ongoing, deep conversations as if we are all together.

We’ve actually developed a unique ritual. Our Voxer Crew holds a “Question of the Day” each morning, where one member brings a unique and thought-provoking question to the group. Recently, we’ve discussed the election, award shows, the Olympics, gay marriage, the struggle of being single or married, the trials of parenthood, and more.

There are 12 of us in our group, going back and forth, like we’re in the same room. For the past eight months, through Voxer, we literally share our daily lives with each other. While my wife and I were in the hospital preparing to deliver our second child, we were able to keep our friends updated on one of the most important days of our lives.

So, in short, thanks Voxer. You’ve made me more connected to the most important people in my life.

Vox On!

Michael Andrews

Voxer Hard(ware) Hack 2012

Voxer is hosting Hard Hack, a Node.js hardware hacking weekend at our headquarters in downtown San Francisco on December 8-9, 2012.

We’re going to get together, collaborate and hack all the things. There will be sharing of ideas, good company, experimentation…and lots of JavaScript. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

Tickets are available now and only a few spots remain. Register here while you can!

Hard Hack is an open collaboration for the Node.js community led by Voxer engineer Daniel Shaw (@dshaw), as well as Julian Gautier (@jagautier), Voxer engineer and creator of the Firmata module.

We’ve got notable Node.js hardware experts involved, too. Look forward to time with Emily Rose (@nexxylove) and Elijah Insua (@tmpvar).

And Jerry Sievert (@jerrysievert), Mikeal Rogers (@mikeal), Isaac Schlueter (@izs), Max Ogden (@maxogden), and James Halliday (@substack).

This will be a unique hands-on event. Hear DShaw talk about it in the shared vox below:

Today, we’re getting a bit more technical and are introducing the world to three Voxer engineers, DShaw, Ashkan, and Julian.

DShaw, Node.js Engineer

Technically speaking, what makes Voxer a unique app?

The unique blend of live and asynchronous communication is amazing. I use Voxer to communicate with my friends, family and co-workers in realtime when that’s most convenient and time-shifted when it’s not. If my wife or I are overseas, we’re often 9 hours apart and it’s hard to find time to communicate live. Voxer works so much better. We can message each other when it’s right for us and respond when we can. Also, groups. Group communication is amazing. Heading to an event and getting everybody synced up is so much easier when everybody’s on Voxer.

How is Node.js different from other server side software systems? What advantages does it give Voxer?

Voxer handles an amazing amount of realtime data. Node.js is a perfect fit for I/O (input/output) intensive apps like ours. We’re a leader and innovator in the space and Node.js allows us to be nimble and focus on our code by being lightweight and staying out of the way.

Ashkan, iOS Engineer

What was your technical background / experience prior to joining the Voxer team?

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from University of Utah. Previous to Voxer, a few friends and I cofounded lolo (lolofit.com) in 2010, which is a mobile fitness company. All of us had worked on different health and fitness related products and services before, so we all combined our expertise and focused on the emerging mobile market.

What is the biggest technological challenge facing Voxer and its goal of continuing to be a global messaging service?

To be able to deal with a large number of connections we had to use some radical, new and somewhat unproven technologies. We think the technology we use is the right tool for this job, but with any new technology, there are uncharted grounds. No one else has pushed this technology stack to the limits like we have, so it’s natural to find cases where unexpected problems come up. We’ve made tremendous progress so far and will continue to improve every aspect of our system.

Julian, Node.js Engineer

From a technological perspective, what did you find exciting / intriguing about joining Voxer?

I was excited to join Voxer to get a chance to use cutting edge technologies like Node.js, Riak, and Redis. It’s also awesome to get a chance to use these technologies at such a large scale.

Technically speaking, what makes Voxer unique?

Voxer is unique because everything in our system speaks HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol — the foundation of data communication on the internet), which is not what most people would imagine when transmitting live audio. Also, the way that our system is distributed using consistent hashing algorithms is pretty cool.

Today, we introduce the world to three more Voxer staffers, CJ, Tina, and TJ.

Meet CJ, Software Engineer

What is the most interesting fact (about history, science, technology, etc.) that you know?

One of the coolest things I ever learned is the fact that there is more than one kind of infinity, and some kinds of infinities are larger than others. For instance, while there are an infinite number of natural numbers and an infinite number of real numbers, there are *more* real numbers than there are natural numbers.

What is a unique personal characteristic, hobby, or talent that you have?

I do some Olympic lifting, but mostly I’m into powerlifting. This means that I’m strong enough to win arguments with my coworkers by picking them up and throwing them. This is always a handy fallback when I can’t win my point on technical grounds.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in coastal Massachusetts. My parents live in a town that was once known as “Salem Village,” which you probably know as the site of the Salem witch hysteria. A short walk from their house is the Rebecca Nurse homestead, where one of the women executed during the witch trials had lived.

What was your childhood / family nickname?

My full name is “Christine Joyce” but I have only *ever* been called that by angry elementary school teachers. My childhood nickname was “Chris”. In college I started going by my initials and that’s what stuck.

What’s your favorite movie?

Desk Set, starring Spencer Tracy as a computer efficiency expert and Katharine Hepburn as the reference librarian he’s sent to replace with a Electronic Brain. I always wanted to grow up to be Hepburn’s character in this movie. Sadly I grew up to be Spencer Tracy instead.

Here’s Tina, Graphic Designer

What is the most interesting fact (about history, science, technology, etc.) that you know?

There are more than 4 billion cell phones in use. About 3 million cell phones are sold every day.

What is a unique personal characteristic, hobby, or talent that you have?

I have a strong passion for design that always pushes me to learn and try something new. I always get inspired by reading designer-related blogs. Right now, I am designing and making jewelry as a hobby. :)

Where were you born and raised?

Tehran, Iran.

What was your childhood / family nickname?

My close friends used to (and still) call me Tinaz.

What’s your favorite movie?

I love foreign films and I have so many favorites, but the last movie I saw that I really liked was Café de Flore.

Data Scientist, TJ

What is the most interesting fact (about history, science, technology, etc.) that you know?

Our Galaxy, the Milky Way, will collide with its nearest (equivalently sized) neighbor, Andromeda, in approximately 5 billion years. And I am responsible for naming the remnant left behind after the collision, Milkomeda!

What is a unique personal characteristic, hobby, or talent that you have?

I like surfing a lot, I like traveling a lot (been to 36 countries around the world), and I have been known to dance a little bit when I have too much to drink. I own one suit and approximately 40 Hawaiian shirts (but I’d prefer if that ratio was even higher).

Where were you born and raised?

Santa Barbara, CA.

What was your childhood / family nickname?

Technically, TJ is a nickname. :)

What’s your favorite movie?

Besides Terms of Endearment? Hmmmm, I have garnered extreme enjoyment from The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona, Office Space, and all the James Bond films.

Be on the lookout for more profiles in the near future. Engineers: look out for the next post; we’re planning to get a bit more technical.

So, dear friends, stay safe in the coming two weeks.
Enjoy all the fun and the treats.

But wherever you go and whatever you do,
Beware of this guy — and the little one, too!

To let our loyal fans get to know us a bit better, we had a photographer come in to take our business photos and we gathered some interesting info about each of them. This is the team that brings Voxer to the world!

As you can tell, we dress for success every day. :)

Check out our legal guru, Dan, Voxin’ away!

More about Dan:

Lived in Bogota, Colombia. Tried mondongo for the first time on a recent visit and proclaimed it “delish”!

Loves to bake. Has been working on mastering croissants. This past weekend’s batch, while not perfect, was pretty darn good.

Frequently voxes in costume. His Lady Gaga voxing outfit is particularly fetching.

There’s our engineer Mike, lookin’ for a high-five!

Fun facts about Mike:

From Buffalo, NY. He’s a wing connoisseur.

A vinyl record collector. He’s up to 75 so far!

Favorite move is Primer.

Hey, look! It’s our Head of Data, Matan, playing peekaboo!

Some interesting info about Matan:

From Israel, but was born in the Philippines.

Mosquitoes love him.
