2▶in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.
3▶So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.

8▶We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.
9▶The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him;
10▶we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.
11▶All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you. “Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you.
12▶You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem.
13▶Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.
14▶The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.
15▶“Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong.
16▶Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us.
17▶“Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary.
18▶Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.
19▶Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”
20▶While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill--
21▶while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.
22▶He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.
23▶As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:
24▶“Seventy ‘sevens’[c] are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish[d] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[e]
25▶“Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[f] the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.
26▶After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing.[g] The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.
27▶He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[h] In the middle of the ‘seven’[i] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[j] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.[k]”[l]

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1927 and converted to his Christian faith at the age of 14, Kevin Conner served in the Salvation Army until the age of 21. At this time he entered into pastoral ministry for a number of years.
▶ Since that time he has been involved in teaching ministry inAustralia, New Zealand and for many years at Bible Temple (now City Bible Church) in Portland, USA. After serving as Senior Minister of CityLife Church (formerly Waverley Christian Fellowship), he turned his responsibilities over to his son, Mark Conner, in 1995. Mark led the church for the next 22 years before transitioning out of that role in February 2017. Kevin’s oldest daughter Sharon is married to Frank Damazio and they live and minister out from Portland, Oregon in the USA.

Kevin is recognized internationally as a teaching-apostle after many years of church and Bible College ministry. He has written many textbooks used by ministers and students throughout the world. He has been in great demand as a teacher and has travelled extensively. He is now 90 years of age and lives in Melbourne, Australia with his wife Rene.

▶ Luke loves meal scenes and often reports discourses of great significance at the table (5:29; 7:36; 10:38; 14:1; 22:14). This meal is no exception. If diplomats had been present at this meal, the press release afterward would have said, "The two parties held frank and direct discussions, but no agreement was reached."

The exchange between Jesus and the religious rulers of the day were marked less by diplomacy and more often by rebuttal and debate. Jesus was usually asking the questions and more often than not, the rulers never responded directly.

The piety, even the correctness of the religious leaders of that time faced condemnation from Jesus and the rulers hated Jesus for his candor and judgment.
In stark contrast with the religious ruling class, Jesus spoke and acted contrary toward their traditions and culture (i.e., not washing his hands before partaking of a meal).
Many Christians believe that passivity, the absence of anger in the face of evil, and compliance with wrong-minded leadership are hallmarks of the faith. This example of Jesus causes the question to judge that stance,
No more vivid example is needed to understand the great gulf between He and religionists of HIs time. Hypocrisy was condemned by Savior. Not just one hypocritical way, but six different sins of the religious rulers.

He begins with the picture of a cup that is clean on the outside but filthy with extortion and wickedness on the inside. Jesus alludes to the precise care that went into washing utensils so as to avoid ritual uncleanliness. He is reacting to the contrast between compulsiveness in external cleanliness and an absence of concern for the heart.
The two vices Jesus names are greed and wickedness.
Jesus turns his attention to God's role as Creator, the One who made both the outside things and the inside.
Jesus disdains greed and wickedness. Both are broad terms for the immorality of various types, usually attitudes that lead us to treat people and possessions as objects to be used and manipulated.
Jesus admonished those who abused the principle of tithing, both in the monetary sense and the spiritual sense.
The scribes' hypocrisy lies in claiming to know God's will yet being cold to others.

“ 7 And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.”

Since moving from an Anaheim Hills, Orange County, CA, location to our retirement home in the Temescal Valley, Inland Empire, Riverside County, we have embraced the rural life, such as it is in Southern California.

Truly, I am not sure we can be labeled “Perizzites” at this time, perhaps only if the rural moniker applies. The word, rural, appears but once in scripture:

That is why rural Jews—those living in villages—observe the fourteenth of the month of Adar as a day of joy and feasting, a day for giving presents to each other.

Think of Abraham and Lot, who fell into conflict because their flocks and herds overwhelmed the land. “Quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and the Perizzites [the unbelieving community] were also living in the land at that time” (Genesis 13:7). Lot chose the best of the land and lost everything in the end. The “Perizzites” are a group of people mentioned many times in the Bible as having lived in Canaan before the arrival of the Israelites. The name may be related to a Hebrew term meaning "rural person."^[1]▶ https://goo.gl/yBX5yo

Many of the laws that God gave to the ancient Israelites in the Old Testament were meant to help them stay healthy and avoid sickness. Jesus devoted much of His ministry to healing the sick and restoring them to health. When we give our lives to Christ, the Bible says, “You are not your own. … Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)	The Formation of God's People. One of the clear-cut signs that the kingdom of God has come to earth is the formation of the church, the new people of God ( 1 Cor 1:2 ; 2 Cor 1:1 ). This group is identified by Paul, among other things, as the “saints” ( 1 Cor 1:2 ; 2 Cor 1:1 ).	The doctrine that the body is for Christ decided another question, to which the depraved habits of the Corinthians gave rise. All fornication is forbidden. To us, with our present Christian habits of mind, it is a thing of course-to Pagans, new; but the doctrine exalts every subject.

During my pre-teen years (late 50s and early 60s), my parents purchased some undeveloped land in North Florida that couldn’t even live up to the moniker, “a swamp.”

  But I remember that a few trees indigenous to the acreage were mulberry, aka Morus, a genus of flowering plants in the family Moraceae, according to Wikipedia, comprises 10–16 species of deciduous trees commonly known as mulberries, growing wild and under cultivation in many temperate world regions. Luke 17:6 refers to the tree as a Sycamine which there is associated with “bitterness.”  

Immature mulberry fruits are white, green, or pale yellow. In most species the fruits turn pink and then red while ripening, then dark purple or black, and have a sweet flavor when fully ripe, but not before. The fruits of the white-fruited cultivar are white when ripe; the fruit of this cultivar is also sweet but has a very bland flavor compared with darker varieties.  And although I haven’t had mulberries for years, I do remember how ample sugar added to the mixture produces a tasty mulberry pie or cobbler.
