MAKING HIS BAND

The first round of casting for MAKING THE BAND 5: Making His Band, began with the LA audition at Centerstaging in Burbank on March 7th and ended 4 cities and three weeks later in the S.I.R. Rehearsal Studios in New York City. According to the casting notice, P. Diddy is putting together "an all-star band to back him up on tour, and YOU could be a part of it!"

Don't you have to be a star to be in an All-Star band? I mean, if you weren't and they let you in, it could be an almost all-star band, but it couldn't be an alllll star band, right?

ROCK OF LOVE 2 runner-up Daisy De La Hoya got close but no cigar. Now VH1 is giving her a chance to mend her broken heart on her own show, DAISY OF LOVE, premiering in the spring/09. Pinhole Glasses

I’m a 56 year old man. Most of my life I was proud of my eyesight, particularly as it related to my skill at target shooting, which I was active in competitively throughout my teens. But as I aged my eyesight weakened. Oh, I wouldn’t admit it, of course, but finally my job (I’ve done parcel delivery for the same company since 1980) forced me to admit I wasn’t reading house addresses from the street the way I used to.

While male vanity was part of the reason I put off getting prescription lens, another reason was my father. Like me, Dad had excellent eyesight till later in life, but by the time he was 60 he was wearing bifocals. He always wondered if corrective lenses actually accelerated the decline of his unaided vision by doing focusing work that the eye should natural do. I considered laser eye surgery, but when I started researching it I found that laser eye surgery carries a definite risk of decreased night vision. Maybe that wouldn’t be an issue for a parcel delivery driver in Florida, but up here in Wisconsin, where the Christmas rush and late afternoon sunsets go hand in hand, reduced night vision isn’t a minor matter.

What was I going to do? If I were to have an accident on the job there were several younger drivers eager to take my route. But at my age, changing jobs wasn’t an option. What to do?

Then I read about pinhole glasses, a natural, non-surgical way to sharper vision. I asked my doctor about the technology and he said, yes, pinhole eye glasses work. Round 1 of casting for Sean Combs, a.k.a Diddy, and producer Mark Burnet's MTV talent competition for vocalists, STARMAKER, started with the San Francisco open call on August 23rd and ended in Atlanta September 9/08. Two singers, one male and one female, will win a contract with Diddy's Bad Boy Records. They were "looking for all styles from soulful r&b and energetic pop, to twangy country and hot rockers."

CASH OR CAPTURE is the Sci-Fi Channel’s version of a Japanese competition show in which contestants compete against each other for a cash prize while being stalked by hunters. The deadline for applications for season 1 was September 23/08. You had to live in the LA area, be 21+, pass a stress test and physical and runners, and be able to commentate throughout the game.

TRUE BEAUTY

Season 1 of ABC’s new beauty competition reality series from EPs Tyra Banks and Ashton Kutcher, TRUE BEAUTY, was originally cast as The GREAT AMERICAN BEAUTY. Applications closed August 5/08. The series premiers Monday, Jan. 5/09.

According to an ABC press release, “[S]ix stunning females and four handsome males will live together in a spectacular Los Angeles mansion as they undergo a series of challenges to determine who is truly the most beautiful. The gorgeous contestants assume they're being judged solely on their outer appearance. They're only half right; outer beauty is one component the judges are looking for, but contestants are also being evaluated -- unbeknownst to them -- for their INNER beauty as well when they're put through scenarios and situations that require them to make moral decisions.”

The N is Nickleodeon's "nighttime network for teens, on air every night starting at 6pm ET/3pm." It is available on the east coast only from difital cable and satellite operators.

STUDENT BODY is an 8-episode reality competition series hosted by Laila Ali that premiered July 12/08. The series followed 12 students from rival high schools in Decatur, IL as they attempted to whip their lives into shape, with the ultimate goal being “to achieve a healthier lifestyle through diet, exercise, volunteer work and academics.” The winning student received $25,000 to be used for new programs and facilities at their school.

TOP CHEF JUNIOR

The casting notice for season 1 of TOP CHEF JUNIOR was removed from the Bravo casting page September 12/08.

On June 10/08 Bravo announced it had an 8-episode cooking competition series for kids (likely ages 13 to 16) in development. The working title is TOP CHEF JUNIOR - TOP CHEF producer Magical Elves is handling this one as well. By the time the casting notice went up August 10th they had decided to up the age range 2 years 15 to 18. They were "looking for teens with a passion for food and creativity with various levels of culinary expertise. Maybe you grew up in your family's restaurant, or own your own catering company, or have taken classes or cooking camp; or maybe you just like experimenting and impressing friends and family - whatever your level, show us who you are and what you got!" The series is tenatively slated for early 2009.

The 8-episode first season premier of 50 CENT: THE MONEY AND THE POWER was November 6/08. MTV and 50 Cent cast "ambitious young people (over 18 with a high school diploma or GED equivalent) determined to get rich or die trying" for season 1.

According to the casting notice, "Whether you're a street hustler or a Harvard grad, if you have the drive to make your dream come true then 50 Cent and MTV want to help you make it happen. They want to give you the tools and life lessons to take you to the top just like 50 Cent. If you think you have what it takes to be the next "mogul in the making," then we want to hear from you."

Open calls were held in June/08 in NYC, the Jersey Shore, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Tampa and Houston. The official casting web site gave an email address to apply for LA interviews and promised the dates, times and location for an LA open call would be announced later, but they never were.

Despite the crash and burn of Amnesia, CBS and Mark Burnett Productions are still talking. JINGLES is the ultimate product placement show – a search for “the greatest undiscovered marketing genius.”

Open calls for jingle writers for season 1 ended June 8/08. Series is expected to air this fall. The casting notice asked, “Do you think that you could use your quick mind and comedy skills to wow Fortune 500 companies with your talent? We are looking for teams of two to four people to write and perform product jingles. A team could be anything from an improv troupe to a singing comedy duo or a barbershop quartet. We are looking for fun, high-energy performances mixed with a competitive spirit. Teams will compete weekly for a chance to win $100,000 and a contract with one of the companies!”

Open calls for season 3 of AMERICA'S BEST DANCE CREW were announced Aug 21/08 and held in October in Atlanta, St. Louis, NYC and Los Angeles. The only way you could make it on the show was by trying out at an open casting calls. The only way you could try out at an open casting call was by submitting a video of your crew's best routine at dance.mtv.com and if it impressed the casting people they gave you an appointment to tryout for the judges at an open call.

MTV and the executive producers of America's Next Top Model were casting girl singers and their manager/mothers for TEEN DREAM, a reality competition series to find “America’s next female superstar.” Between April 11th to May 4/08 open calls were held in Chicago, LA, Orlando, Miami and NYC. They were looking “for the most talented female singers with the biggest personalities as well as their equally charismatic mother/managers!”
