The world Amateur Radio Day is celebrated every year on 18th April to commemorate the formation of International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) on this day in 1925 at Paris. The QARL (The Quilon Amateur Radio League) celebrates the event every year on 18th April or the nearest Sunday by conducting Ham fair. This year the programme will be held on Sunday, the 22nd April.

The formation of QARL HEART (Ham Emergency And Rescue Team) will be announced on 18th April, 2012.

A special issue of 'QARL News' will also be published on this occasion. You are requested to contribute articles and advertisements well in advance.

News From AT2DW IOTA AS-175 :

The AT2DW team on Bet Shankhodhar Island (IOTA AS-175) has over 4000 QSOs and should have their amp running by now. The amp could not be used earlier due to school children camping close to the vertical antennas who have now departed and the team did not want to risk any accident. The amp will hopefully help them to work the more distant areas especially NA. They will be actively looking for more QSOs to NA and SA when openings are noted to give this new one to IOTA chasers there.

The team has been active on all bands 80m through 10m and logs are being uploaded to Club Log whenever a reliable Internet connection is available. See http://www.clublog.org/charts/?c=AT2DW for the searchable log, statistics and other log information.

Bet Dwarka Dxpedition AS-175 :

The island of Bet Dwarka (Bet Shankhodhar) will be activated in the period 16th-23th March 2012.

This island falls under the Iota Gujarat state west group - No.: AS-175 and has never been activated before. Bet Dwarka Island, also known as Bet Shankhodhar, is situated in the Gulf of Kutch. The island has a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. Early historic settlement remains have been located on the island which may be dated back to 3rd century BC on the basis of a potsherd inscribed with 'Nandakasa' in the Mauryan Brahmi script.

A special call sign "AT2DW" has been allotted by the WPC.

OM Dipuda, VU2DPD Silent Key :

I regret to inform the VU ham community that our beloved Dipuda, VU2DPD is no more. He passed away early this morning at a nursing home in Kolkata due to a cardiac arrest. He had been admitted a few days back and was coping with pneumonia and diabetes related complications. He was around 76 years. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

An avid DXer and DXCC holder he was a CW bug. He received his ticket sometime in the mid 80s. He was a great homebrewer and his home made CW peddles were simple yet marvelous. He had a great understanding of antennas and antenna systems and experimented with several types of yagis,quads and loop antennas. (his favourite was the cubical quad which he ran and made huge pileups with during his stay in Haldia port when he was a rare DX on VHF for us in Kolkata).

He excelled in every aspect of this wonderful hobby and his friendly yet expert handling of the All India Net on 14.150 warmed our hearts for many many years. He was also the QSL manager of the ARSI QSL bureau for a very long time, a job he performed with utmost dedication and competence. He was off the air because his radio an Icom IC706MKII had developed some critical faults a few years back which he had tried very hard to repair without success. His last dream was to return on HF with a new radio which he was in the process of importing.

VU2DPD was a veteran radio ham, one of the very best in this hobby in which currently true radio hams are becoming an extinct community. He will be remembered as the wily, lanky, witty Dipuda smoking his favourite pipe, always in good humour, eager to lend his helping hand.

His loss has created a vacuum in the ham community which will never be filled. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Daman Ganga Lighthouse Activation :

If you are planning on participating in this weekend's Jamboree On the Air (JOTA), take note: Astronaut Mike Fossum, KF5AQG, is planning to participate in JOTA from the International Space Station, using the call sign NA1SS. According to the AMSAT website, Fossum’s schedule is somewhat flexible on the weekends, but he will not be available for every pass. The typical crew work periods are 0800-1930 UTC, but they are sometimes available a bit later. When available, Fossum will be operating on the standard ISS frequencies. In the US and elsewhere in IARU Regions 2 and 3, the uplink is 144.49 MHz. In Region 1, the uplink is 145.200 MHz. The worldwide downlink for NA1SS is 145.800 MHz.

Two university cubesats JUGNU and SRMSAT

JUGNU was developed by a team of students and faculty at IIT Kanpur and ISRO scientists to launch India's first Nano Satellite. The satellite's mission includes:
