Right Games - Russian Board Game Publishers - Sponsor Vul-Con

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Thu, 22 Sep 2011 13:25:00 +0000

The Vul-Con Team is proud to announce that Right Games - Publishers of Russian Board Games - is on board as our latest sponsor. We're very excited about this opportunity to share great games like Evolution, Potion Making Practice, The Kingdoms of Crusaders, and The Enigma of Leonardo with our members.

In preparation for Vul-Con Arena III at Samurai Comics and Games on December 10th, the Vul-Con Team ran a "test-play" of Evolution last weekend. We were blown away by how easy the game was to learn to play, how tactically rich it was, how well it taught concepts of evolution, and how well it simulated a functioning ecosystem. Most of all, we had such a great time playing it, we felt compelled to immediately play it again.

Be sure to join us are Vul-Con Arena III and register early, so you can lock in a seat at the Russian Board Game Table. You're going to want to have a chance to try these great games, and certainly don't want to miss the opportunity to win one of the copies we will be giving away courtesy of Right Games.

Vul-Con Interview with Boilerplate Creator Paul Guinan

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 +0000

The Vul-Con Team posted a 15 minute excerpt from our Skype interview with Paul Guinan, creator of Boilerplate. If your interested in the origins of Boilerplate, how he connects to the Steampunk movement, what's up with the upcoming movie from J.J. Abrams, little known facts about history, and more, check out this interview. If 15 minutes of Paul Guinan isn't enough for you (we could listen to him all day), be sure to join us at Phoenix Vul-Con 2012 where he will be one of our virtual guests. We have more guest announcements and several event announcements that will trickle out over the next few weeks, so keep checking back. Also, one more round of thanks to the organizers of Mustache Bash, Steam Crow and Gamer's Inn, for providing the venue for this interview. We'd also like to extend our apologies for the popping in the audio track. We're still perfecting our Skype technique and hope to be able to offer cleaner audio in the future (besides it gives the interview a Steampunk, transmitted over the Aetherwebs feel).

Mustache Bash Photos and More

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Fri, 12 Aug 2011 00:31:00 +0000

The Vul-Con Team had the pleasure of attending Mustache Bash sponsored by Steam Crow and Gamer's Inn on Saturday August 6th at Gamer's Inn in Mesa, AZ. We brought two things to the party. The first was a customized version of Wings of War that pitted Pterodactyls again Sopwith Camel Bi-Planes in a battle off the coast of the Isle of Caprona and over the HMS Furious. The Pterodactyls were set on destroying the observation balloon tethered to the HMS Furious for the purpose of locating lost survivors in the area. A great time was had both by those who played and those who watched.

The second thing the Vul-Con Team brought to the party was a virtual guest. Via the magic of Skype and the Aetherwebs, Paul Guinan, creator of Boilerplate, joined us for a nearly 40 minute interview with fans. He shared fascinating information and great stories about the creation of Boilerplate, the optioning by J.J. Abrams and Paramount of Boilerplate for a forthcoming movie, the development of the Boilerplate Coffee Table Book, and the upcoming Coffee Table Book set in the world of Boilerplate with a new protagonist. Mr. Guinan provided an amazing interview and graciously fielded questions. We hope to be able to share portions with you via our YouTube channel some time soon.

We've recently posted two videos from Vul-Con Arena II held at Imperial Outpost Games/ManaWerx on July 16, 2011. The first is our interview with Andrea Angiolino (creator of Wings of War) via Skype. Please forgive the video/audio synch issues, as this was recorded in the very lively and loud environment of Arena II, and Mr. Angiolino was calling in from Rome, Italy. The second video is a quick tour of the event. Arena II was an absolute blast, and we hope the video captures some of that energy. The videos can be found on our YouTube Channel:

Interview on The Gaming Gang More Vul-Con Arena II Coverage

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Wed, 27 Jul 2011 13:58:00 +0000

Vul-Con Co-Consuls Rick and Jay had the pleasure of being interviewed last weekend by Elliott and Jeff of The Gaming Gang. If you're not familiar with their site, you should really check it out. They cover the full gamut of the Strategy Gaming Hobby in articles, reviews, sneak peeks, blog posts, podcasts, and more. Shoot over to http://www.thegaminggang.com for the latest in gaming news, reviews, and some of the best gaming opinion columns we've had the pleasure to read. Oh yeah, don't forget to check out the interview with Rick and Jay while you're there (click here to link directly).

We promised more pictures of Vul-Con Arena II, and you'll find them below. Before returning to photos, there are some folks we owe thanks for the success of the event.

First off we'd really like to thank Darren and Aaron of Imperial Outpost Games/ManaWerx for hosting Vul-Con Arena II. Not only is their newly remodeled double-store phenomenal, these two gentlemen had a huge hand in making Arena II the great success that it was. We truly appreciate their support and friendship.

We'd also like to give another shout of thanks to Andrea Angiolino for being our first virtual guest. The Skype interview is in the works for posting, and all involved had a great time. We're looking forward to having Mr. Angiolino as a virtual guest at the full convention, Phoenix Vul-Con 2012, next February.

To our Senators, we just want to let you know that we haven't forgotten that none of this works without you. You give up your time and opportunity to game, so that others have an excellent experience and that is a most noble endeavor. This is one of the reasons we've started a separate raffle of prizes for Senators at Arena II. We'll continue that and more Senator perks and benefits are forthcoming.

To our Citizens, thank you so much for attending. Without you playing the games there would be no point to any of this. Our goal is always that you have a great time, and it certainly looked like you did at Arena II. Don't forget to take advantage of opportunities to pre-register in the future, as it gives you a chance to provide input prior to the event. The earlier you pre-register, the more likely we will be able to make certain we have the games and tournaments you desire.

Thanks to everyone who came and had a great time. As promised, here are more pics:

World's Largest Chariot Racing Game at Phoenix Comicon 2011

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Tue, 31 May 2011 13:00:00 +0000

The World's Largest Chariot Racing Game had its second outing at Phoenix Comicon 2011. Not only was it incredibly well received - those who played had a blast and those who swung by for a quick look stayed a while to drink in its immensity and splendor (and enjoy watching those playing), but it accomplished a new milestone at this event. The final game of the day was a completely full race card of eight players. It was a wild and exciting game with a lot of whip attacks and some wild rolls that resulted in one player taking three other players whips as they attacked him, only to have his own whip grabbed a few turns later. A great time was had by all, and we can't wait to have another eight player game running. If you missed it at Phoenix Comicon 2011, your last chance to see or play it in 2011 is coming up soon. It will be at Vul-Con Arena I on July 16th at Imperial Outpost Games/ManaWerx, then it will be packed away until Phoenix Vul-Con 2012 in 30,000 Square Feet of intense gaming at the Phoenix Convention Center on February 25th and 26th, 2011. Until then, here are some pictures to tide you by:

Legio Vulcani Debut at Phoenix Comicon 2011

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Tue, 31 May 2011 02:08:00 +0000

Saturday at Phoenix Comicon was a pretty exciting day for the Vul-Con Team. The Legio Vulcani made their first appearance at a public event. Amidst and amongst all the madness and wild costumes at Phoenix Comicon, you would think Roman Soldiers and a Roman Lady would go unnoticed. That certainly was not the case. They were mobbed for photos before even entering the convention center. The short time we were on the floor with them, we saw hundreds of people stop them to take photos. We have a few teaser pics below, with more to come:

Vul-Con Team at Phoenix Comicon

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Sun, 29 May 2011 01:07:00 +0000

We're into the third day at Phoenix Comicon and thought it might be nice to post some pictures of our presence there. Thursday night we had the opportunity to run one of our favorite games - Dust Tactics. Two gentlemen joined us to learn how to play, and we drew quite a number of onlookers during the game and after it wrapped up. It seems that Dust Tactics appeals to a lot of folks out there, and we're thrilled to be sharing it with others.

Friday we brought out the 5'+ Diameter Coliseum for 14 hours of Gladiatorial combat. Attendees loved the game. Many played and a lot more ogled and whispered under their breath "That's so cool." If you didn't have a chance to play Gladiator at Phoenix Comicon, don't worry you can still play this summer at Vul-Con Arena II on July 16th at Imperial Outpost Games/ManaWerx.

Saturday was the best day yet, with the unveiling of our Legio Vulcani. They made quite a stir on the floor, posing for hundreds of pictures. Keep checking back, we'll have the first pictures up in short order.

Phoenix Comicon Kicks off Summer Gaming Season

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Thu, 26 May 2011 15:12:00 +0000

Phoenix Comicon is the first Phoenix Convention of the summer and hosts the first gaming event. Expanded gaming space this year is at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. If you're going to Comicon or just looking for a place to game this weekend (in which case you need to sign up for Comicon) - stop by and play some games with the Vul-Con Team. We'll be out there Thursday night running one of our favorite games, Dust Tactics, from 6pm -8pm. Friday we'll be back for the whole day, running Gladiator in the awesome 5' diameter Coliseum. Saturday we'll be wandering the convention floor with a few surprises (be sure to look for our very cool series of 3 gaming bookmarks, among other things). We'll cap it all off on Sunday by running Circus Maximus all day in the 22' x 7' Hippodrome. So, come out, stop by and say "hi", and join us for a few games!

Savage Mars at Vul-Con Arena II

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Mon, 16 May 2011 05:15:00 +0000

The Vul-Con Team had a chance to stop by Imperial Outpost Games/ManaWerx this weekend to check out the recent expansion. We enjoyed seeing the new space and were especially pleased to see the posters for Vul-Con Arena II up at the store. Here's a picture of the one in the storefront window:

We also had the great pleasure of meeting Howard Beam, who will be running events at Vul-Con Arena II at Imperial Outpost Games/ManaWerx on July 16th. We're particularly excited that Howard is running Savage Mars. If you're interested in fantastic Role-Playing adventures on Mars, don't miss this opportunity. Not only does Howard have some gorgeous miniatures that will be used in playing the game (check out some pics below), the fine folks at Adamant Entertainment are providing copies of the PDF edition of Mars as prizes for some of the participants.

If you'd like to see more pictures of Howard's miniatures, they can be found at his Savage Mars Blog. Be sure to sign up for Arena II soon, so you can lock in your seat for the awesome game. We'll have a few more event announcements later this week.

Vul-Con Updates and LepreCon This Weekend

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Fri, 06 May 2011 04:19:00 +0000

We've been a bit quiet of late, but are starting up the flow of information in ernest again. In the last post we promised some info on the friends we ran into at Laughing Moon Con. One of those friends was Jason Youngdale. We're excited to have Jason involved with Vul-Con, but his most pressing involvement this week is LepreCon 37. Jason is the Gaming Director, so if you're looking for a place to game this weekend, check out LepreCon at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel. LepreCon kicked off tonight for pre-registered attendees, but if you haven't registered yet, you can still swing by and get three days of gaming under your belt May 6th - 8th. One of the highlights of the weekend is the Design a Lite RPG Contest that looks like a blast. More info can be found here: http://leprecon.org/lep37/?page_id=23.

Back on April 2nd we announced our Arena II date -- July 16th, 2011 at Imperial Outpost Games. The registration page is now live and can be found on the Arena Page at http://www.vul-con.com. Our new fliers are starting to show up around town, so keep an eye out for them (you can check out the sample below). We'll have our first round of game announcements soon, so keep your eyes on this blog, because there will be some very cool games at Arena II.

The Ubi Es Vulcan? Contest is also coming soon, and we'll have more info for you in a short while.

First Look at Laughing Moon Con

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Sun, 17 Apr 2011 16:58:00 +0000

We had a great time at Laughing Moon Con yesterday, so we want to give a run-down of some of the excitement. Our apologies that these first few pictures are grainy, the lighting wasn't great and these were taken with a cell phone. We'll get the better pics up during the week.

First off, we were able to bring out the Gladiatorial Coliseum and show off a few new touches. This is a shot from the first game of the day.

Here's a bit of a close-up. Again the picture is pretty grainy. The attendees at Laughing Moon Con seemed to really enjoy the game.

In fact, we not only had people coming back to play a second or third time - they were bringing their friends over to play with them. This led to a couple of four-player games. The pic below is from one of them. In another of the four-player games, there was a bit of excitement when a young lady effectively cleaved another gladiator in two with a single blow. This was the result of the most amazing series of dice rolls we've seen yet while running this game. After an extended "dance" with her last opponent, she finally finished him off to stand victorious before Caesar and the crowd.

Amongst the other excitement of the day, we had the opportunity to meet an array of amazingly cool people and catch up with some of the awesome folks we met at Vul-Con Arena I. We'll be posting more on that throughout the week. We'll also cue you in on the launch of the Ubi es Vulcan? contest at Laughing Moon Con.

Lastly, we'd like to thank Todd VanHooser for inviting us out and putting on a truly fantastic event.

Looking Forward to Laughing Moon Con

noreply@blogger.com (The Vul-Con Team) — Fri, 15 Apr 2011 15:40:00 +0000

Just wanted to fire off a quick reminder that we'll be at Laughing Moon Con tomorrow with the Gladiatorial Coliseum. Come try your hand at Gladiator, check out the sites and sounds, play a Steve Jackson Game with the truly awesome Arizona Men in Black, play some Laughing Moon, and visit with the Laughing Moon Girls. It looks like a great time for all, so be certain to stop by and say "hi". We hope to see you there:

The Vul-Con Team will be bringing this monstrous play field and the 90mm scale gladiators to Laughing Moon Con on April 16th. If you've played the game or just want to learn, come out and join us. Amidst and amongst the other fun activities at this event, we'll be teaching a playing Gladiator on this truly awesome play field, We'll also be unveiling a new surprise in the form of our "Ubi es Vulcan?" contest. We'll be explaining how the contest works and handing out 12" standups of the Vul-Con statue of Vulcan to attendees. This is your first chance to get your hands on one and a jump-start on the contest, which involves Facebook and you snapping shots of Vulcan in interesting or unusual places.

Want to know more about Laughing Moon Con? Read the excerpt from their web site below or check out the site at http://www.laughingmooncon.com.

LaughingMoonCon hopes to introduce a new generation to the sci-fi, fantasy, comic book, and gaming convention scene. This is a unique opportunity for veteran convention attendees and first timers to get involved with the long tradition of pop culture conventions.

Held at Desert Edge High School, students and families can enjoy the event with the local community. All proceeds from the convention go to extracurricular clubs at Desert Edge (last year, the DE marching band was able to attend the Fiesta Bowl Parade along with the Arizona 501st thanks to funds raised from Laughing Moon Con).

Once again we'd like to thank R&D Games for donating two copies of the BoardGameGeek Game through BoardGameGeek.com. I understand that these are currently in short supply and will soon be sold out, so if you are interested in a copy and weren't one of our winners (pictures below) rush over to BoardGameGeek.com before they are all gone. We'd also like to thank Fantasy Flight Games for donation of the Rattlesnake Game. This game was a huge hit with kids at Arena I, and we were thrilled that our winner of this game was attached to one of them.

Keep an eye on this blog, as we will soon be announcing some upcoming appearances at local events, an upcoming contest, and a new benefit to attending Vul-Con Sponsored Events.

There were a variety of prizes and accolades to be won at Vul-Con Arena I. We'll be posting some information about the winners and pictures over the next few days. Today we'll start with the winners from our three Tournaments:

Wings of War - WWI Tournament

The Tournament Winners (shown above) for Wings of War were: James Hiers, Top Entente Flier; Henry Tyler, Top Alliance Flier; James Hiers, First Place in Tournament; Terry Veazey and Henry Tyler, Tied for Second Place in Tournament; Jesse Archbold and Neville Stocken, Tied for Third Place in Tournament. Each winner received a plane (donated by Fantasy Flight Games), the Top Entente and Alliance players received a plaque (designed by Vul-Con's own Rick Ivansek and sporting actual WWI airplane fabric), and medals were presented for First, Second, and Third Place in the Tournament. Several of these gentlemen, including the Top Entente and Alliance Players joined us from Tucson and are members of El Escuadron 857th, Vuelo Del Javelina. Their web presence can be found at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/JavelinaFlight/.

Dust Tactics Tournament

In an interesting twist, the first and second place winners in our Dust Tactics Tournament were not only first time players, they are father and daughter. Ray Marron edged out daughter Alexa in the final match to become the first place winner and Top Axis player, leaving Alexa not only as the second place winner, but also the Top Allied player. They were each awarded medals, pre-release Dust Tactics figures with cards, and a cloisonné pin for faction they represented in the Tournament (all but the medals were donated through the generosity of Fantasy Flight Games). Additionally, all players received Dust Tactics patches showcasing the Allied logo.

Ludi Vulcani Games

Ironically, Darren Nakamura is not a very competitive person. He took a liking to Gladiator and Circus Maximus pretty quickly though and was the champion of both games, earning the first place winner medal for the Ludi Vulcani games at Vul-Con Arena I and a prize donated by DriveThruRPG.com consisting of a digital gift certificate for free merchandise at their site.
