The secret is that once you make major modifications to your car you will void your warranty. The VW dealership prefers doing all the work on your car and may frown upon performance upgrades such as turbo kits and computer chips. It may not even be safe for you to replace your shocks or brakes if you are inexperienced.

5 Min Mods #3 "Framed"

This is the third edition of 5 Min Mods. If you missed the first two you can view all the 5 Min Mods here. This series will continue until I run out of ideas for cheap, easy, modifications.

For this modification you'll need the following:

Cost = $2-$5
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Tools = a screwdriver
Time = 5min

Step 1

Unscrew license plate

Step 2

Apply frame over license plate and reattach to car with screws.

Simple, easy, done.

5 Min Mods #2 "DIY Hood Ornament"

This is the second edition of 5min Mods, if you missed the first one check it out here. This week I'll show you how to make your very own hood ornament (inspired by Lifehacker, Instructables Spiderman 3).

For this modification you'll need the following:

Cost = Total of $2.99 ($1.99 for a kids meal with toy ;), bag of $1 magnets)
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Tools - Glue gun, magnets, figurine of your choice (I used a Venom figure from a BK kids' meal)
Time = 5min

Step 1

Get Lunch!

Step 2

Get Magnets. Pick em up at your local craft store.

Step 3

Glue magnets onto feet or base of figure with glue gun.

Step 4

Apply Hood ornament.

Step 5

Finished! Admire your work. Take a drive around the neighborhood and watch people stare at intersections. P.S. the hood ornament can double as an interior running mate, put the magnet inside if you don't want it to be stolen. It's that cool.

5 Min Mods #1 "Look Ma, No Blinker Covers!"

This is the first edition of 5 min Mods. Each week I'll show you how to do a modification and break it down with step by step instructions. I'll classify each mod by cost, degree of difficulty, tools needed, and time.

This week I'll show you a DIY modification that is easy to do and costs nothing.

5 Min Mod #1
"Look Ma, No Blinker Covers!"

I did this a few months ago and am very happy with the results. First it's a reversible modification which does not void your warranty, it looks cool (in my opinion) and it's free. I noticed some condensation inside my side turn signals so I popped off the covers to find that the shiny effect is nice. I've left them off since then.

For this modification you'll need the following:

Cost = Free, nada, nothing, $0 ;)
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Tools - Needle nose pliers or flat head screwdriver
Time = <5

Step 1 Grab a hold of the clear plastic of the side marker

Step 2 Carefully remove each blinker cover

Step 3 Voila, you're done. Stand back and admire your work (save the parts to sell or tint)

VW Golf GTI W12 650 Concept (With Video!)

At the Worthersee 2007 meet for VW enthusiasts, Volkswagon pulled the wraps off the GTI W12 650 concept. A 6.0L biturbo 12 cylinder sits behind the front seats, dishing 650 horses to the rear wheels. Top speed is said to be over 200 mph, and it goes from 0-62 in 3.7 seconds. Video of its public debut is included.

Wash Your Car!

It is springtime, birds are mating, trees are mating, pollen is everywhere. Clean the crap from birds and trees off your car. I prefer using the high pressure hoses at the local coin operated car wash, but a sponge and hose will do. Clean the inside and outside thoroughly, this is called detailing. It makes your car looks and smell so fresh and so clean. Here are some before and after pictures of my VW GTI pre and post wash.

A lot of car care basics and tips can be found at Edmunds.com with get articles and videos. I highly recommend this site for regular maintenance. As for my GTI I try to give it a good wash and wax every 3 months or more depending on conditions.
