Hammers Win 63-60 Over Lions

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Alabama Hammers pulled off a little road magic Saturday night in Columbus.

Quarterback Arvell Nelson's 5-yard pass to Mico McSwain with 26 seconds left in regulation won it for the Hammers, who held on for a 63-60 win and handed the Columbus Lions their first regular season home loss in a year and a half.

But a lot happened in that final 26 seconds. The Lions (2-2) had a chance to tie the game with a 24-yard field goal but opted to go for the win on fourth down and long.

It didn't work out.

An offensive pass interference call negated Randy Hippeard's 17-yard scoring strike to London Crawford and a last-ditch heave fell incomplete as the Hammers celebrated their first win of the season after an 0-2 start.

"It was a great win for this franchise – especially on the road and especially after we lost a game to them last week that we could have easily won,'' said Hammond, whose team avenged a 56-43 home loss to the Lions.

"Now it's time to keep building and take all these positives and move ahead. We played well on both sides of the ball. It was a good night."

Former UNA standout McSwain had five touchdown catches and Nelson added a pair of rushing touchdowns to go with over 250 yards passing. Maurice Dupree – a former Hammer and another ex-UNA star – had five touchdown receptions for Columbus.

Former Alabama A&M standout Al Donaldson had a pair of interceptions for the Hammers, while fellow ex-Bulldog Darrian Payne had a 27-yard interception return that gave Alabama a 56-54 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.

A hot Hammers offense settled for Jamie Whitworth's 28-yard field goal to lead it 43-34 midway through the third quarter before the Lions roared back behind Hippeard's two rushing scores for a 54-49 edge heading to the final quarter.

The Hammers had trailed by three points late in the first half after Dupree's 10-yard touchdown catch from Hippeard, but the extra point was blocked by Eric Scott. Hammers linebacker Julius Johnson scooped up the deflection and returned it the length of the field for a two-point score to make it a 34-33 game with just over 30 seconds left before intermission.

Nelson then backed that up with a quick 36-yard scoring strike to McSwain, Whitworth added the extra point, and Donaldson's second interception of the half for a stop sent Alabama to the break ahead by six.

The Hammers are idle next weekend before heading to Richmond April 14. Alabama returns to the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena to face Knoxville on April 21.

Hammers Welcome Back Scott

HUNTSVILLE – Former Viper Eric Scott is now a Hammer.

Alabama Hammers coach Marty Hammond announced Tuesday that Scott – a Scottsboro native and former Southern Miss standout – has signed with the team and will be on hand when players report Friday for training camp.

Scott was a member of the Tennessee Valley Vipers 2008 arenafootball2 championship team and spent last season splitting time between New Orleans and Georgia in the Arena Football League.

"It's great to be back in Huntsville," Scott said. "Let's go get another championship."

Scott (6-foot-2, 285 pounds) racked up more than 20 tackles and had three sacks for the Voodoo and Force last season in 16 games. He totaled 39.5 sacks and 104 tackles through 2009 in af2 with the Vipers in '08 and '09 and Birmingham as a rookie in '07.

"I'm glad to have Eric coming to camp and he is definitely a strong presence on defense," Hammond said. "Right now I feel pretty comfortable with the group I have coming to camp."

Alabama Hammers Flying to New League

Huntsville, AL - The Alabama Hammers announced on Wednesday that they're moving to a new indoor football league for the 2012 season.

The Hammers spent 2011, their first year in existence, in the SIFL - Southern Indoor Football League. This season, they're moving to the PIFL - Professional Indoor Football League.

The league is made up of other teams from the SIFL that defected to the PIFL. It includes the Albany (Georgia) Panthers, Columbus (Georgia) Lions, Knoxville (Tennessee) Nighthawks, Louisiana (Lake Charles) Swashbucklers, and Richmond (Virginia) Raiders.

Alabama Hammers Will Play As Scheduled, Collect Items for Victims

The Alabama Hammers released the following statement on Monday :

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Its hard to think about football, but the Alabama Hammers are hoping to give everyone a little to look forward to at the end of the week when we play the Carolina Speed at 7:30 Friday night at the VBC.

The recent storms have hit everyone in the Valley one way or the other. The Hammers thoughts and prayers are with everyone whose life has been impacted. The Hammers and our partners will be working to aid in the recovery efforts in Alabama. We have a list of items that are needed to help the victims of the tornadoes.

Hammers Sign Former Auburn, UNA Standouts

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Alabama coach Marty Hammond has gotten a solid boost to his roster as the Hammers prepare to open training camp on Friday.

Former Auburn defensive end Marquies Gunn, ex-UNA receiver Charles McClain, and former Alabama A&M defensive back Al Donaldson and ex-Bulldog offensive lineman Darrius Turner all have signed with the Hammers

"Gunn is the real deal and has NFL experience and McClain is fast with a great set of hands,'' Hammond said. "Donaldson and Turner are a pair of local talents with plenty of promise

Gunn (6-foot-3, 275 pounds) had 31 tackles and four sacks for the Tigers in 2006 and later signed a free-agent contract with the New York Giants in '07. He has also spent time in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League

McClain (5-9, 170) had 32 receptions for 306 yards and three touchdowns for the Lions last season, finishing with 82 catches for 816 and five scores from 2007-10.

Turner (6-5, 320) played on the offensive line at Alabama A&M finishing up in 2007 and Donaldson (6-0, 185) had 51 tackles and led the Bulldogs with eight interceptions in his final campaign in '07
