As the vibrant colors of autumn give way to the impending chill of winter, Midwest homeowners should cast a critical eye over their concrete surfaces. This blog post outlines the top five warning signs that your concrete slabs need leveling now, before the destructive freeze-thaw cycles of winter exacerbate existing damage, create hazardous trip spots, and diminish your home's curb appeal.

The crisp air and falling leaves of autumn signal not just the approach of holidays, but also the inevitable arrival of winter's harsh embrace. For homeowners in regions prone to freezing temperatures, this means it's prime time to assess the condition of your concrete. Driveways, walkways, patios, and pool decks are all susceptible to the forces of nature, particularly the insidious freeze-thaw cycle. When water seeps into cracks and voids beneath concrete slabs and then freezes, it expands, pushing the concrete upwards. When it thaws, the concrete settles, often unevenly, leading to further damage. Addressing these issues before winter hits is crucial, not only for safety but also to protect your property's value and aesthetic.

Here are the top 5 signs your concrete is crying out for leveling before the winter freezes hit:

Uneven Slabs and Trip Hazards: This is perhaps the most obvious and dangerous sign. If you notice one concrete slab is significantly higher or lower than its neighbor, creating a "lip" or a step, you have a serious trip hazard. These become even more perilous in winter when covered by snow or ice, making falls almost inevitable. Leveling these now prevents accidents and potential liability.

Visible Cracks, Especially Large or Spreading Ones: Small hairline cracks can be benign, but large, wide, or actively spreading cracks are red flags. These indicate significant stress and movement within the concrete. As winter approaches, water will seep into these cracks, freeze, and expand, turning minor imperfections into major structural weaknesses and accelerating deterioration.

Sinking or Settling Concrete: Areas of your concrete that have visibly sunken or settled, creating depressions where water can pool, are a clear indication of compromised soil support beneath. These low spots will collect melting snow and ice, prolonging the freezing action and magnifying the damage each winter season.

Poor Drainage and Standing Water: If you notice puddles forming on your driveway or patio long after a rain shower, or water draining towards your home's foundation instead of away from it, your concrete's slope is incorrect. This poor drainage can lead to significant water damage to your home’s foundation and landscaping, a problem that intensifies with melting snow.

Concrete Pulling Away from the House or Other Structures: Gaps forming between your concrete slab and your home's foundation, garage, or other adjacent structures are a critical warning sign. This separation indicates significant settlement and can allow water to penetrate directly to your foundation, leading to expensive basement or crawl space issues, especially when coupled with winter's moisture.

Addressing these issues with concrete leveling before winter arrives is a proactive measure that saves money, enhances safety, and preserves your home's curb appeal. Don't let the freeze-thaw cycles turn minor inconveniences into major headaches—act now to ensure your concrete surfaces are level, safe, and ready to withstand the season.

For Midwest homeowners, fall isn't just about vibrant leaves and pumpkin spice; it's also the optimal season for addressing crucial foundation repairs. This blog post details why the stable temperatures and ideal soil conditions of autumn create the perfect window for foundation maintenance, allowing homeowners to prevent further damage and prepare their homes for the harsh realities of winter.

As the hot, humid grip of summer loosens its hold and the brutal chill of winter has yet to arrive, Midwest autumn presents a golden opportunity for homeowners to tackle essential home maintenance. Among the most critical tasks during this period is foundation repair. While it might not be as glamorous as raking leaves or decorating for the holidays, addressing foundation issues in the fall can save you significant headaches and expenses down the line. The unique climate patterns of the Midwest, with its often dramatic seasonal shifts, make timing crucial. Understanding why autumn is the prime season for foundation work can help you protect your most significant investment—your home—from the ground up.

One of the primary reasons fall is ideal for foundation repair in the Midwest is the relatively stable temperature. Unlike the scorching heat of summer, which can cause soil to dry out rapidly and shift, or the freezing temperatures of winter, which bring the destructive forces of frost heave, autumn offers a more moderate and consistent climate. This temperature stability minimizes soil movement during the repair process, allowing for more precise and effective work. Extreme temperatures can complicate concrete curing and soil excavation, but the temperate conditions of fall provide an optimal environment for various repair techniques, from pier installation to crack sealing. This means the repairs are more likely to set correctly and provide long-lasting stability, giving you peace of mind as the colder months approach.

Furthermore, fall soil conditions in the Midwest are often perfectly primed for foundation work. After a summer of potential drought or heavy rains, the soil typically stabilizes, reaching a moisture content that is neither overly saturated nor bone-dry. This makes excavation easier and less disruptive, and it provides a more reliable base for foundation repair solutions. Addressing problems now also acts as crucial preparation for winter. The freeze-thaw cycles of a Midwest winter can exert immense pressure on a compromised foundation, turning minor cracks into major structural concerns. By repairing your foundation in the fall, you're not just fixing existing damage; you're fortifying your home against the harsh, expanding, and contracting forces that winter will inevitably bring, ensuring your home remains stable and secure through even the harshest conditions.

This fall, while you're fortifying your home against imaginary monsters, don't overlook a real potential haven for unwelcome guests and environmental hazards: your crawl space. This post puts a fun, spooky twist on the serious need for crawl space encapsulation, highlighting how sealing and insulating this often-neglected area can prevent moisture, pests, and even structural damage from turning your home into a creature's lair before winter sets in.

As the nights grow longer and the winds begin to howl, many of us enjoy a good scary story or a creepy movie. But imagine a real-life horror show unfolding right beneath your feet: a dark, damp, and forgotten realm beneath your home that's slowly but surely transforming into a creature's lair. We're talking about your crawl space, an area often out of sight and out of mind, yet profoundly impactful on your home's health and your family's comfort. Unprotected crawl spaces are notorious breeding grounds for all sorts of unwelcome guests, from scurrying rodents and creepy crawlies seeking shelter from the autumn chill, to the silent, insidious creep of mold and mildew, all drawn to the damp, dark conditions. This fall, before winter truly sets in and these uninvited tenants make themselves permanent residents, it's time to reclaim your crawl space!

The true monster in an open crawl space isn't just the critters, it's moisture. Unsealed crawl spaces allow cold, damp air, and even standing water to infiltrate your home's underside. This moisture then rises into your living areas, contributing to musty odors, higher humidity levels, and making your HVAC system work overtime to maintain a comfortable temperature. Imagine the chill of the coming winter being amplified by a constant draft of cold, damp air seeping up from below! Beyond discomfort, excessive moisture can lead to wood rot in your floor joists and subflooring, attracting wood-boring insects, and ultimately compromising the structural integrity of your home. It's a slow, silent decay that can undermine your entire house, turning it from a cozy sanctuary into a crumbling, creature-infested ruin.

The good news is you don't need a team of ghostbusters to banish these crawl space nightmares. The ultimate shield against moisture and pests is professional crawl space encapsulation. This process involves thoroughly cleaning the crawl space, repairing any existing damage, and then installing a heavy-duty vapor barrier that completely covers the ground and walls. This barrier seals off the space from the earth's moisture. Often, insulation and a dehumidifier are also installed to control temperature and humidity, creating a dry, clean, and inhospitable environment for pests and mold. By encapsulating your crawl space this fall, you're not just preventing critters from taking up residence; you're protecting your home's structure, improving indoor air quality, and potentially saving a significant amount on your heating bills. Don't let your crawl space become a creepy creature's lair this season—seal it up and enjoy a healthy, comfortable, and pest-free home!

This Halloween, step into a detective story where the mystery isn't "whodunit," but "what's sinking?" Our tale follows the perplexing case of a once-proud sidewalk now plagued by uneven slabs and dangerous trip hazards. Uncover the culprit behind sinking concrete and witness how the advanced PolyLevel foam injection system heroically lifts and revives the concrete, providing a perfectly level "after" picture for any homeowner.

The air grew crisp as Detective Miles "Mac" Concrete surveyed the scene. A once-proud sidewalk, usually bustling with trick-or-treaters, now lay in disarray. Slabs sagged, creating treacherous inclines and sudden drops—a veritable obstacle course under the cloak of twilight. "Another case of the Sinking Sidewalks," Mac murmured, shining his flashlight on a particularly egregious trip hazard near old Mrs. Gable's prized pumpkin patch. Homeowners across town were reporting similar phenomena: driveways resembling roller coasters, patios with unsettling tilts, and pool decks developing mysterious depressions. The culprit was elusive, leaving behind no fingerprints, only the silent, creeping evidence of uneven concrete. This Halloween mystery wasn't about ghosts and goblins; it was about geology and gravity, and Mac knew exactly where to begin his investigation.

Mac’s first step in cracking the case was understanding the "why." His years of experience told him the concrete itself wasn't the primary antagonist. No, the real villain lay beneath, unseen and insidious: the soil. Over time, factors like erosion, compaction, and temperature fluctuations can cause the soil supporting concrete slabs to shrink, wash away, or settle. When this happens, the concrete loses its vital support structure, leading to voids beneath the surface. With nothing to hold it up, the heavy concrete slab inevitably begins to sink, creating the very unevenness that plagued Mrs. Gable’s sidewalk. Traditional "interrogations" of concrete often involved noisy, destructive, and messy methods like mudjacking or, worse, complete slab replacement. But Mac had a new, more refined technique, a high-tech solution that was both elegant and effective—a true marvel of modern concrete forensics.

This is where the hero of our story, PolyLevel, makes its dramatic entrance. Mac, with his team of highly trained technicians, introduced PolyLevel's high-density polyurethane foam into the investigation. Through small, strategically drilled holes in the concrete, the lightweight foam was injected, expanding to fill the hidden voids beneath the slab. As the foam solidified, it gently but powerfully lifted the concrete back to its original, level position. The process was swift, clean, and remarkably quiet—no heavy equipment or noisy jackhammers, just precise, controlled lifting. What was once a perilous path for trick-or-treaters was now a smooth, safe walkway. The Sinking Sidewalk mystery was solved, not with brute force, but with scientific precision. Mrs. Gable's pumpkins looked even brighter against the perfectly leveled concrete, ready for a safe and happy Halloween. The case was closed, leaving behind only the satisfaction of a job well done and a perfectly revived sidewalk, ready for countless future footsteps.

Ah, October! The air is crisp, pumpkin spice abounds, and your yard transforms into a kaleidoscope of red, orange, and gold. It's a truly magical time—unless you're a gutter. For gutters, October is less about picturesque beauty and more about a relentless assault of falling leaves, twigs, and other autumnal detritus. This deluge of organic matter quickly transforms your efficient water-management system into a cozy, damp den for what we like to call "gutter goblins." These aren't your friendly garden gnomes; these are nasty, matted clogs that prevent water from flowing freely, causing it to back up, overflow, and potentially wreak havoc on your home’s foundation, siding, and landscaping. Trying to clear these slimy, leaf-choked gutters can be a messy, precarious, and altogether unpleasant task, making you wish you'd called in the professionals sooner!

Beyond the immediate inconvenience of climbing ladders and scooping out decaying sludge, clogged gutters pose a serious threat to your home. When water can’t drain properly, it finds alternative routes, often spilling over the sides and saturating the ground around your foundation. This excess moisture can lead to basement leaks, foundation cracks, and even mold growth—a real-life haunted house scenario that no amount of Halloween candy can fix. Furthermore, overflowing gutters can damage your fascia boards, rot eaves, and erode landscaping, turning your beautiful fall garden into a waterlogged mess. If your gutters are already old, leaky, or bent out of shape, this annual assault of fall foliage only exacerbates existing weaknesses, making them even more susceptible to turning into goblin-filled, water-spewing nightmares during the season's first heavy rain.

That's why October, before the heavy rains and freezing temperatures of late fall and winter arrive, is absolutely prime time for gutter replacement. Investing in new, high-quality gutters—perhaps even those with built-in gutter guards—can save you a significant amount of hassle and expense down the line. Imagine a fall where you don't have to brave a wobbly ladder, reaching into gooey, leaf-filled troughs! Modern gutter systems are designed to handle larger volumes of water and resist clogging, effectively banishing those pesky gutter goblins for good. So, as you carve your pumpkins and finalize your spooky decor, remember to give some thought to your home's unsung heroes. Upgrade your gutters now, and you can enjoy the rest of autumn and the coming winter knowing your home is well-protected, leaving you free to focus on the fun frights, not the real-life water damage terrors.

This fall, as temperatures drop and the spooky season descends, it's crucial to look beyond the decorative cobwebs and inspect your home for genuine structural horrors. A compromised foundation can lead to a host of frightening issues, from cracks in your basement walls to uneven floors. Learn to recognize these warning signs and understand how professional foundation repair can banish these "ghosts" before winter's chill exacerbates the damage.

As autumn leaves begin to fall and the air grows crisp, many homeowners embrace the spirit of Halloween, decorating their houses with ghoulish delights and eerie spectacles. But amidst the festive decorations, a far more terrifying specter might be lurking beneath your very home: foundation damage. Just like a haunted house with creaking floors and shifting walls, a settling or failing foundation can manifest in a series of alarming symptoms that extend far beyond mere cosmetic imperfections. These are not imaginary phantoms but real structural issues that can compromise the integrity and safety of your entire home. Ignoring these warning signs is akin to inviting a true horror story, one that can lead to costly repairs and a significant decrease in your property's value if left unaddressed.

So, how do you spot these "foundation frights" before they truly haunt you? Keep an eye out for several common specters. Are there mysterious cracks appearing in your basement walls, either horizontal, vertical, or stair-stepping? These are often the first ghostly whispers of a shifting foundation. Indoors, do you notice doors and windows that stick or refuse to close properly, as if an unseen force is holding them askew? This misalignment can be a direct result of a settling foundation distorting the door and window frames. Furthermore, pay attention to uneven floors, cracks in your drywall, or gaps forming between walls and ceilings; these are all chilling indicators that your foundation might be experiencing more than just seasonal adjustments. Just like a good ghost hunter, you need to be vigilant and know what to look for, as these seemingly minor issues can escalate into major structural nightmares, especially as winter approaches and the ground freezes and thaws.

The good news is that you don't have to live in a perpetually haunted house. Banish these foundation ghosts before the deep chill of winter sets in by seeking professional foundation repair. Experts can accurately diagnose the underlying cause of your foundation's distress, whether it's expansive soils, poor drainage, or other issues. Solutions can range from installing foundation piers to stabilize and lift your home, to reinforcing bowing basement walls, or sealing cracks to prevent water intrusion. Addressing these problems proactively not only safeguards your home's structural integrity but also protects your investment. Don't let foundation frights turn your cozy abode into a house of horrors this fall. Take action, banish the ghosts, and ensure your home remains a safe and stable haven for years to come.

While you're busy perfecting your spooky decor this Halloween, don't overlook the most genuinely frightening hazards on your property: concrete cracks and uneven slabs. This post explains why sinking concrete and trip hazards are a liability on a high-traffic night and introduces a modern, effective solution like PolyLevel to ensure your walkways are safe for every trick-or-treater.

Halloween is the one night a year we actively invite strangers, mostly children in vision-impairing costumes, onto our property, and we do it under the cover of darkness. While you focus on the fake tombstones and spiderwebs, the real danger is lurking just beneath their feet. Cracked and uneven concrete walkways, driveways, and porch steps are no longer just an aesthetic nuisance—they become serious trip hazards and a huge liability risk on the busiest night of the year. That innocent little crack running across your sidewalk or the slightly sunken slab near the porch light is a perfect accident waiting to happen, especially when compounded by long costumes, face masks, and excited running feet. Don't let your desire for a spooky ambiance blind you to the very real hazards that could lead to a painful fall and a homeowner's insurance nightmare.

The root cause of these frightening concrete issues is often a shifting or failing soil base beneath the slab, leading to an issue known as settlement. When soil erodes or shrinks, the concrete loses its support and begins to sink, creating dangerous elevation differences from one slab to the next. These sinking concrete slabs are the real ghosts and ghouls of your property, an insidious problem that only gets worse with time and seasonal changes. Traditional fixes, such as ripping out and replacing the entire concrete slab or messy mudjacking, are often invasive, time consuming, and disrupt your ability to finalize your decorations. With Halloween approaching fast, you need a quick, reliable, and noninvasive solution that can be performed with minimal disturbance to your holiday plans.

Fortunately, there is a modern, high-tech way to banish these concrete horrors for good: concrete leveling with an advanced system like PolyLevel. This process involves injecting a lightweight, high-density polymer foam beneath the sunken slab through small, penny-sized holes. The foam expands, filling any voids and gently lifting the concrete slab back to a level position, effectively eliminating trip hazards and restoring the safety of your walkways. This solution is quick, clean, and durable, allowing you to have a safe, level surface ready for a night of trick-or-treating without the downtime or mess associated with older repair methods. This Halloween, focus on the fun frights, not the real risks, by making sure your creepy cracks and spooky slabs are professionally addressed and leveled.

The presence of water in your crawl space or basement is a far more serious problem than a simple puddle. It is a hidden danger that can lead to significant issues throughout your entire home. The moisture trapped in these spaces can have a negative impact on everything from your home's structural integrity to your family's health.

  1. Structural Damage and Foundation Issues

Water is a major culprit in foundation problems. A constantly wet crawl space or basement can lead to hydrostatic pressure, which pushes on your foundation walls and can cause them to crack, bow, or even collapse over time. The excess moisture can also cause support beams and floor joists to rot and weaken, compromising the structural integrity of your home's framing.

2. Mold, Mildew, and Poor Air Quality

A damp, humid environment is the ideal breeding ground for mold and mildew. Mold spores can spread throughout your home via the "stack effect," a phenomenon where air from your lower levels rises to the upper floors. This means the air you breathe in your living room could be contaminated with mold spores, leading to health issues like allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems. A musty smell in your home is a strong indicator of this problem.

3. Pest Infestations

Pests like termites, cockroaches, rodents, and spiders are drawn to damp, dark environments. A wet crawl space or basement provides them with a perfect habitat. Not only can these pests cause damage to your home's structure and wiring, but they can also carry diseases, creating an unhygienic living environment.

4. Reduced Energy Efficiency

High humidity makes it harder to heat and cool your home. Your HVAC system has to work harder to manage the moisture and regulate temperature, leading to higher energy bills. A professional inspection often reveals that a wet crawl space is the root cause of an inexplicably high utility bill.

After a long, dry summer, the arrival of fall can bring welcome relief in the form of cooler temperatures and much-needed rain. However, the same rainfall that revives your lawn can pose a significant threat to your home's foundation, especially in regions with expansive clay soil like Illinois and Missouri.

Here’s why autumn rainfall can be a cause for concern and what you can do to protect your foundation.

The Dangers of Saturated Soil

The primary risk to your foundation during the autumn is soil expansion. When dry clay soil, which has shrunk and pulled away from your foundation during the summer, suddenly absorbs a large amount of water, it swells and expands. This process, known as hydrostatic pressure, exerts immense force against your basement and foundation walls.

This pressure can cause:

Cracks: As the soil pushes inward, it can create or widen cracks in your concrete or block foundation walls.

Bowing Walls: In severe cases, the pressure can cause basement walls to bow inward, a sign of significant structural stress.

Water Intrusion: Any cracks, old or new, become an easy entry point for water, leading to basement leaks, seepage, and a greater risk of mold and mildew.

The Problem with Erosion

While swelling soil is a major issue, the opposite problem—erosion—can also occur. Heavy runoff from your roof and yard can wash away the soil directly supporting your foundation. This can create voids beneath the foundation, causing it to settle unevenly and potentially leading to cracks in your home’s walls and floors.

Key Steps for Autumn Foundation Maintenance

Protecting your foundation from autumn rainfall is all about proactive water management. Here are a few essential steps you should take:

Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Clear all leaves and debris from your gutters to ensure water can flow freely. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and dump directly against your foundation.

Extend Your Downspouts: Make sure your downspouts are long enough to direct water at least 5 to 10 feet away from your foundation.

Inspect Your Yard's Grading: The ground around your home should slope away from the foundation to promote proper drainage. If you notice any areas where water pools, you may need to add soil to improve the grade.

Seal Cracks: Before the heavy rains begin, inspect your foundation for any existing cracks and have them sealed by a professional. This is a critical step to prevent water from entering and freezing inside, which can cause them to widen.

By taking these preventative measures, you can help your home’s foundation withstand the challenges of the season and prevent minor rainfall issues from becoming major, costly repairs.

Preparing your foundation for the colder months is a crucial step in protecting your home from potential damage. The freeze-thaw cycle can be particularly hard on foundations, as water that seeps into cracks can expand when frozen, causing the cracks to widen and leading to more serious issues.

Here are some key steps to take to prepare your foundation for fall and winter:

1. Inspect and Repair Cracks Walk around the interior and exterior of your foundation and look for any cracks, no matter how small. Even hairline cracks can allow water to enter. Seal minor cracks with concrete caulk or sealant. For larger or more serious cracks, it's best to consult a professional to ensure they are properly sealed to prevent further damage and water infiltration.

2. Manage Water and Drainage Proper drainage is the single most important factor in protecting your foundation.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Clear your gutters of leaves and other debris. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and pool around your foundation.

Extend Downspouts: Ensure your downspouts direct water at least 5-10 feet away from the foundation. You can use extensions to achieve this.

Check Soil Grading: The soil around your home should slope away from the foundation. A slope of at least 6 inches over a distance of 10 feet is ideal. If you notice any low spots where water pools, consider adding soil to improve the grade.

Clear Snow: During the winter, keep snow and ice shoveled or swept away from the foundation's perimeter. When snow melts, it can saturate the soil and lead to water issues.

3. Address Other Moisture-Related Issues

Check Your Sump Pump: If you have a sump pump, test it to ensure it is in working order before heavy rains or snowmelt. A battery backup is also a good idea in case of a power outage.

Insulate Pipes: Insulate any exposed water pipes in basements or crawl spaces to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

Maintain Consistent Humidity: In basements or crawl spaces, use a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels low (30-50%). This helps prevent condensation and moisture buildup that can lead to foundation damage and mold.

Taking these proactive steps can help you avoid costly repairs and protect the long-term health of your home's foundation.

Your home's foundation is the most critical part of its structure, and like any major system, it requires regular care to stay healthy. Skipping routine maintenance can lead to minor issues escalating into major, costly repairs. A proactive approach to foundation care, particularly in regions like Illinois and Missouri with expansive clay soil, can save you a significant amount of money and stress in the long run.

Here's why regular foundation maintenance is so important and what you can do to protect your home.

1. Manage Moisture Levels Around Your Home

In the Midwest, soil expands and contracts with the seasons. Excessive moisture from heavy rain or melting snow can cause the soil to swell and push against the foundation, a problem known as hydrostatic pressure. Conversely, during a dry spell, the soil can shrink, causing the foundation to settle. The key is to keep moisture levels consistent.

Gutters and Downspouts: Ensure your gutters are clean and your downspouts extend at least 5 to 10 feet away from the foundation to prevent water from pooling near the base of your home.

Proper Grading: The ground around your house should slope away from the foundation, allowing water to drain naturally.

Water Your Foundation: During dry periods, especially in the summer, consider watering the soil around your foundation using a soaker hose. This can help prevent the soil from shrinking and pulling away from the foundation.

2. Conduct Regular Inspections

You don't need to be a professional to spot the early signs of a problem. A simple visual inspection of your home can make a world of difference.

Inside: Check your basement walls, floors, and ceilings for cracks. Also, look for doors and windows that stick or are difficult to open, which can indicate a shift in the frame.

Outside: Walk the perimeter of your home and look for cracks in the exterior foundation walls, as well as any gaps between the foundation and the ground.

3. Landscaping and Vegetation Management

While landscaping can enhance your home's curb appeal, certain plants and trees can be a threat to your foundation.

Tree and Shrub Roots: Large tree roots can grow under your foundation in search of water, causing damage. Plant new trees and shrubs at a safe distance from your home.

Mulch and Pests: Avoid piling mulch or other organic materials against your foundation, as they can retain moisture and attract pests.

The Long-Term Benefits

Investing time and effort in regular foundation maintenance is a small price to pay to avoid the severe consequences of foundation failure. Consistent care helps you:

Prevent Costly Repairs: Addressing small issues early is far cheaper than fixing a major structural problem.

Maintain Home Value: A healthy foundation is a major selling point and a key indicator of your home's structural integrity.

Ensure Peace of Mind: Knowing that the very base of your home is sound and secure provides unparalleled peace of mind.

While consistent maintenance is a powerful preventative measure, it's always wise to have a professional foundation specialist conduct an inspection. They have the expertise to identify hidden problems and can provide solutions that ensure your home remains stable for years to come.

Here’s a look at why attempting a DIY foundation fix is a gamble you should avoid.

1. Misdiagnosing the Problem

The biggest mistake a homeowner can make is misinterpreting the cause of the damage. A small crack might seem easy to patch, but it could be a symptom of a much larger underlying issue, such as:

Hydrostatic Pressure: Water pressure building up against the foundation walls.

Soil Instability: The constant expansion and contraction of clay soil, common in Illinois and Missouri.

Structural Settling: Your home settling unevenly on poorly compacted soil.

A DIY patch only addresses the visible symptom, allowing the root cause to continue worsening until it creates a more severe, expensive problem.

2. Using the Wrong Materials and Tools

Professional foundation repair requires specialized, high-grade materials and equipment that are not readily available to the average homeowner. Most DIY kits and store-bought sealants are designed for temporary, cosmetic fixes, not for structural integrity. Applying the wrong product or using incorrect techniques can make the problem worse, adding unnecessary weight to an already stressed foundation or failing to provide the necessary support.

3. Safety Hazards

Foundation repair is inherently dangerous. It can involve heavy lifting, working with powerful tools, and navigating unstable environments like crawl spaces. Without the proper training and safety equipment, you risk serious personal injury, from cuts and broken bones to the catastrophic risk of a structural collapse. Professionals are trained to handle these risks safely and efficiently.

4. Worsening the Damage and Doubling Costs

It might seem like a DIY fix saves money upfront, but it almost always ends up costing more in the long run. An incorrect repair can cause further damage, requiring a professional to not only fix the original problem but also to undo and correct your work. The money and time spent on a failed DIY project are simply a sunk cost.

5. Lack of a Warranty and Legal Risks

Professional foundation repair companies provide warranties that guarantee their work. If the problem returns, they will fix it. With a DIY repair, you have no recourse. Furthermore, structural work often requires permits and must adhere to local building codes. Failing to obtain the necessary permits can lead to fines and legal issues down the road, and can also devalue your property when it comes time to sell.

For the safety and long-term stability of your home, it’s best to leave foundation repair to the experts.

Your basement is the best place to start, as it provides a direct view of your home's foundation. While a professional inspection is the only way to get a definitive diagnosis, performing your own visual check-up can help you spot early issues and know when it’s time to call an expert like Woods Basement Systems.

Here’s a practical guide on how to inspect your basement for potential foundation problems.

Step 1: Look for Cracks in the Walls and Floor

This is the most crucial part of your inspection.

Foundation Walls: Examine the concrete or block walls for any cracks.

Stair-step cracks in brick or block are a common sign of foundation settling.

Horizontal cracks often indicate significant pressure from the soil outside.

Vertical or diagonal cracks can also be a sign of movement.

Basement Floor: Look for cracks in the concrete slab. Small, hairline cracks are often a result of concrete shrinkage and are usually not a concern, but larger cracks or uneven areas can signal a shifting foundation.

Step 2: Check for Water and Moisture

Water is a major culprit in foundation damage.

Moisture and Leaks: Look for any signs of water intrusion. This includes wet spots, water stains on the walls or floor, and efflorescence (a white, powdery mineral deposit).

Musty Odors: A persistent, musty smell can be a sign of high humidity or hidden moisture, which can lead to mold and damage.

Sump Pump: If you have a sump pump, check that it is functioning properly and that the discharge line is clear and directing water away from your home.

Step 3: Examine Doors and Windows

As the foundation shifts, it can affect the entire structure of your home, including door and window frames.

Sticking: Check if basement windows and doors are difficult to open, close, or latch.

Gaps: Look for gaps between the window or door frames and the surrounding walls.

Step 4: Go Outside and Look for Clues

Your inspection shouldn't be limited to the inside. The exterior can provide valuable information.

Grading: The ground around your house should slope away from the foundation to prevent water from pooling.

Gutters and Downspouts: Ensure your gutters are clean and your downspouts extend several feet away from the foundation to divert rainwater properly.

Exterior Cracks: Walk the perimeter of your house and check the exterior foundation for any cracks, especially where they correspond with cracks you found inside the basement.

If you find any of these signs, it’s a strong indication that you should contact a professional. A company like Woods Basement Systems offers free inspections to provide a thorough, expert assessment and a plan for any necessary repairs.

The Midwest, particularly Illinois and Missouri, is home to a type of soil that can be tough on home foundations: expansive clay soil. This is the primary culprit behind many foundation cracks in the region. Unlike sandy soils that drain water, clay-rich soil absorbs moisture like a sponge, causing it to swell and expand. When it dries out during hot, dry spells, it shrinks and contracts. This constant cycle of expansion and contraction puts immense pressure on a home's foundation, leading to cracks.

Here are the most common causes of foundation cracks in the Midwest:

1. Soil Movement and Settlement

Drying and Shrinking Soil: During a drought, the soil under your home dries and shrinks, creating a void that the foundation can settle into. Tree roots also contribute by drawing moisture from the soil.

Wetting and Softening Soil: Heavy rains or poor drainage can saturate the soil, making it soft and weak. The immense weight of your home can cause it to sink into the unstable ground.

Poorly Compacted Fill Soil: When a home is built on soil that was not properly compacted, the ground will naturally compress over time under the weight of the structure. This can cause the foundation to settle unevenly, leading to cracks.

2. Hydrostatic Pressure and Poor Drainage

When water pools around your foundation, it exerts immense pressure against the basement walls. This is known as hydrostatic pressure. It is a common cause of horizontal cracks and can also cause basement walls to bow or buckle. Poor drainage from clogged gutters, downspouts that discharge too close to the home, or improper yard grading can all lead to this problem.

3. Freeze-Thaw Cycles

The cold winters in Illinois and Missouri bring repeated freeze-thaw cycles. When water in the soil freezes, it expands by about 9%, which can exert significant upward pressure on the foundation, a process known as frost heave. When the ice melts, it leaves behind a void. This continuous freezing and thawing can cause foundations to shift and crack.

4. Concrete Curing and Material Shrinkage

Some minor, non-threatening cracks are a natural part of a new home's foundation. As the concrete dries and cures, it shrinks slightly, which can cause small hairline cracks. These are typically cosmetic and don't indicate a structural problem, but it's important to monitor them to ensure they don't widen or worsen over time.

Foundation issues can be a serious problem, and catching them early can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Drawing from information from Woods Basement Systems, here are some common signs that your home’s foundation may need repair.

1. Cracks in Walls and Floors

One of the most obvious indicators of foundation problems is the appearance of cracks.

Stair-step cracks in brick or concrete block walls.

Cracks in the foundation walls themselves.

Cracks in the drywall, especially around windows and doors, or where drywall seams are pulling apart.

Cracks in concrete slabs, such as driveways, garages, or basements.

2. Sticking Windows and Doors

If you find that your windows and doors are difficult to open, close, or latch, it could be a sign of foundation settlement. When the foundation shifts, it can cause the frames to become "out of square," making them no longer fit properly.

3. Gaps and Separations

Look for signs that different parts of your home are pulling away from each other.

Separating chimneys that have begun to pull away from the main structure of the house.

Gaps along the ceiling or between the floor and wall.

4. Uneven or Sagging Floors

A settling foundation can cause floors to become uneven or to sag. In some cases, you may also notice loose or wrinkling flooring as a result of the shifting structure.

If you notice any of these signs, it's best to have a professional evaluate your foundation. Taking action quickly can help prevent further damage and ensure your home remains safe and stable.

First Command Financial noticed our presence within the community and John K. reached out to Woods. Our skilled foreman went out and installed our TripleSafe™ Sump Pump is thoughtfully designed to remove the maximum amount of water with its multiple pumps. The water then travels from the sump pump through the discharge lines. Our team then installed IceGuard™, an anti-freeze fitting that takes care of the frozen discharge line problem. If the sump pump ever clogs, IceGuard™ will eject water through its openings. With these in place, First Command Financial can return to focusing on its customers. They can expect a healthy and dry basement for years to come!

We sent out our experts and they got right to work. First, they installed our WaterGuard™ System. This works by digging along the interior perimeter and laying pipes that collect water leakage from the walls. Unlike other systems, we place the pipes within the floor and above the soil to prevent clogging. The pipes direct the water to the nearby sump pump. Our TripleSafe™ Sump Pump is truly one of a kind. With multiple pumps, it ensures the maximum amount of water is removed. An additional UltraSump™ Battery kicks on in the event of a power outage. For an added layer of protection, the team installed our CleanSpace™ Vapor Wall Barrier. This protects the walls, controlling the moisture and keeping pests out. An antimicrobial agent, UltraFresh™, is within the barrier, preventing bacteria and mold growth.

Helical piles were considered the ideal deep foundation option given the soil conditions, required pile capacities, and the need for smaller installation equipment. Helical piles could also be installed within these select areas around existing underground utilities. The helical pile design consisted of the Model 288 (2.875-inch OD by 0.276-inch wall) hollow round shaft with 8"-10"-12" triple-helix lead sections to support the design working compression load of 35 kips. Ten piles were installed to depths of 17 to 24 feet to bear within the medium dense sand and to meet or exceed the target installation torque of 7,800 ft-lb. Torque-correlated ultimate capacities were at least twice the design working load (FOS ≥ 2). The piles were fitted with new construction brackets to be cast into concrete pile caps. The pile leads, extensions and brackets were hot-dip galvanized for corrosion protection. The ten helical piles were installed in one day and the crew and equipment were off site prior to a mandatory stop work time of 4 pm to allow the football team to practice in private and without distractions.

Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium is an open-air football stadium which is home to the University of Louisville Cardinals. A $63 million expansion project was approved for the north end of the stadium which included the addition of 10,000 seats, bringing the total seating capacity to 65,000. Improvements would also be made to the Howard Schnellenberger Football Complex. The project was required to be completed in time for the September 2018 season home opener. Although drilled piers were planned for the new stadium seat foundations, another foundation solution was needed at four locations where access was restricted for the drilled pier equipment. Access was limited at these areas by underground utilities and close proximity to existing foundations. The test borings indicated a general subsurface profile consisting of 5 to 7 feet of clay fill underlain by stiff to very stiff clay to a depth of 15 feet where a medium dense sand was observed to a depth of 30 feet. Layers of medium dense sand and stiff clay were encountered below 30 feet to the top of bedrock at 60 feet.

Kevin J., Foreman, and his crew visited the home to restore the basement wall. They installed Geo-Lock Wall Anchors. These anchors are made of galvanized steel and are driven into undisturbed soil to ensure a permanent solution. Geo-Lock Wall Anchors provide support for the foundation wall and work to return the wall to its original position.

The next day, Foreman Jeremy R. and his crew visited the home to install the waterproofing system. First, they installed WaterGuard, a perimeter drainage system. WaterGuard collects and guides water to the TwinPack sump pump system. Jeremy and his team also installed CleanSpace. CleanSpace is an inorganic vapor barrier that works with the waterproofing system. It guides water that may leak through crack to the WaterGuard. Lastly, the crew installed IceGuard. IceGuard provides an exit for water in the event that the exterior discharge lines become frozen.

With these solutions, Shawn can have peace of mind knowing his foundation wall is supported and his basement is dry.

Shawn P. of Girard, Illinois discovered water leaking into his basement through a crack in the wall. System Design Specialist Brenton K. visited Shawn’s home and inspected the basement. Upon inspection, he determined the wall crack was a result of a bowing wall. High hydrostatic pressure in the soil can cause walls to bow inward over time. Brenton designed a solution to support the wall and waterproof the basement.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Woods Basement Systems is taking action against radon in November for National Lung Cancer Awareness month.

COLLINSVILLE, Ill.— Thousands of people in Illinois and Missouri could be saved from radon-related lung cancer thanks to the just released National Radon Action Plan. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the plan, called “A Strategy for Saving Lives,” November 10th. In a partnership between the EPA, the American Lung Association, and other agencies, the plan’s goal is to decrease lung cancer deaths by 3,200 people annually through the installation of 5 million radon reduction systems.

Woods Basement Systems is the local leader in radon, the cancer-causing gas that can seep into homes, businesses, and schools and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Woods Basement System’s radon experts can help determine if a building’s radon levels are above the EPAs recommended 4.0 pCi/L, and if so, can install an aesthetically pleasing and affordable radon mitigation system.

The National Radon Action Plan sets a new strategy to reduce radon exposure. That includes requiring radon testing and reduction systems as a standard practice in housing finance and insurance programs. It also encourages institutionalizing radon risk reduction through building code requirements. The plan is a collaborative effort between the EPA and other national organizations dedicated to lowering radon exposure, like the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST), of which Woods Basement Systems is a member.

Owner Rick Woods says the National Radon Action Plan will help save lives here and all over the United States. “Our radon associations have been working with the EPA for a few years to get this Radon Action Plan finalized,” said Woods. “Through our continued work to increase awareness about radon’s dangers and the Plan’s proposed required testing, I look forward to the day when we can eliminate lung cancer deaths caused by radon exposure.”

Jose L., foreman, and his team began by waterproofing the basement. WaterGuard, a perimeter drainage system, was installed. WaterGuard collects and guides water to the TripleSafe sump pump system. TripleSafe is equipped with a main pump, backup pump, and battery-powered pump to ensure the basement stays dry at all times. In addition to WaterGuard and TripleSafe, IceGuard was installed. IceGuard provides an exit for water in the event that the discharge lines ever become frozen or clogged.

To waterproof the crawl space, the CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation system was installed. CleanSpace is an inorganic vapor barrier. It was installed in conjunction with SmartPipe and SmartPump to prevent water from entering the crawl space. Because it is inorganic, CleanSpace does not support mold growth.

Jose and his team then installed SmartJack to restore the sagging floors in the crawl space. SmartJack is a system made of galvanized steel, so it is resistant to corrosion. This system lifts and aligns the floors to their original position and provides continuous support. SmartJack can hold up to 60,000 pounds and can be adjusted over time as needed.

To support the bowing foundation walls, PowerBrace was installed. The PowerBrace system consists of galvanized steel I-beams. PowerBrace restores the walls to their original position and provides support for the foundation.

The combination of these systems has restored the Kirkwood, Missouri YMCA. The crawl space and basement are now waterproofed, and the foundation is safe and supported.

The Kirkwood, Missouri YMCA has both a crawl space and a basement beneath it. Unfortunately, both the crawl space and the basement were wet, musty, and moldy. Water leaked into the basement at the floor seam, but it also seeped in through the cracked foundation walls. Upon further inspection, Woods Basement Systems System Design Specialist John S. discovered that the foundation was bowing.

Due to increased hydrostatic pressure in the soil, the foundation walls began to bow inward and eventually crack. In addition to bowing, the foundation had also settled. The floors of the YMCA had begun to settle. John designed a solution to restore the foundation, crawl space and basement.

Foreman James L. installed the SmartPipe around the perimeter of the crawl space. SmartPipe collects and guides water to the SmartPump sump pump system and away from the home. Then, the CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation system. CleanSpace is an inorganic vapor barrier, so it does not support mold growth. CleanSpace encapulates the crawl space to ensure water stays out. Mold thrives in areas of high humidity. SaniDry, an energy-efficient dehumidifier, was also installed. Keeping the humidity low keeps the mold away.

To solve their insulation problems, TerraBlock and SilverGlo insulation were installed. TerraBlock was installed to the floor of the crawl space. It prevents moisture from entering the crawl space while insulating the area. SilverGlo was installed to the walls. It acts as a radiant heat barrier and vapor barrier. These systems work together to insulate the crawl space and create a more energy-efficient home.

John and Karan are pleased with their restored crawl space. They are at ease knowing their crawl space will stay dry and free of mold. These solutions have created a more comfortable, energy-efficient and safe home.

Urbana, Illinois homeowners John and Karan I. were troubled by their musty, moldy crawl space. Water leaked into their crawl space through the block foundation walls, and caused mold to overtake the area. In addition to the water problems, the insulation of their crawl space was deteriorating. Mold ate away at their home's structural support and the insulation. Woods Basement Systems system design specialist Greg B. designed a solution to restore their crawl space.

Foreman Jeremy R. and his crew installed Geo-Lock channel wall anchors. These galvanized steel anchors are driven into undisturbed soil in the yard. The floor mounts of these anchors provide extra strength. Geo-Lock prevents the walls from further bowing and stabilizes the wall.

With this durable solution, this homeowner's foundation will stay supported. After the wall anchors were installed, Jeremy and his team restored the yard to its original condition. This homeowner can rest easily knowing his foundation will not collapse under pressure.

A Herculaneum, Missouri homeowner was troubled by his cracked foundation walls. Upon further inspection, a Woods Basement Systems system design specialist discovered large horizontal cracks in the foundation walls. This crack was caused by the bowing foundation. As water pressure in the soil increases, it pushes against the foundation and causes it to bow inward and eventually crack. Mike T., system design specialist, designed a solution to restore and support the foundation.

Foreman James L. and his team began restoring Janice’s crawl space by installing the CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation system. CleanSpace is an inorganic vapor barrier. It prevents water from entering the crawl space while preventing mold growth. CleanSpace guides water to the SmartPump sump pump system which pumps the water away from the home.

James and his team also installed SaniDry. SaniDry is an energy efficient dehumidifier. When the relative humidity is above 50%, mold and dust mites thrive. SaniDry keeps the humidity levels low without hiking energy costs.

With these solutions, Janice’s crawl space is not only dry, but it is free of allergens like mold. Her home is now healthy and comfortable, and she no longer has worries of water in the crawl space.

Philo, Illinois homeowner Janice E. was distraught by water leaking into her crawl space. The water seepage caused mold and dust mites to overtake the space. Due to the stack effect, these allergens enter her living space. She attempted to dry the crawl space with fans, but was unsuccessful. At that point, she called Woods Basement Systems for a solution. System design specialist Greg B. visited Janice’s home to determine the best solution.

Because of the complexity of her problem, three foreman and their teams visited Patricia’s home to restore the foundation, walls and basement. Todd W. and his team installed Geo-Lock Wall Anchors. Geo-Lock Wall Anchors restore the foundation wall to its original position. The anchors are made of galvanized steel and driven into undisturbed soil to provide permanent support for the foundation.

Push Piers were installed by Jose Lorenzana and his crew. Push Piers are designed to restore a settling foundation. These piers stabilize the foundation by lifting it to its original position. Push Piers are secured to the footing of the foundation and are adjusted to lift and stabilize the foundation.

In addition to stabilizing the foundation, the basement was waterproofed. Ryan L. and is crew began waterproofing Patricia’s basement with WaterGuard, a perimeter drainage system. WaterGuard is installed below the floor to collect and guide water to the TripleSafe sump pump system. TripleSafe is equipped with a main pump, backup pump and battery-powered pump in order to ensure the basement stays dry. IceGuard was also installed. IceGuard is installed to the external discharge line to provide an exit for water in the event that discharge lines become frozen or clogged.

Thanks to Geo-Lock Wall Anchors and Push Piers, Patricia’s foundation is now safe and stabilized. With the waterproofing system, she will never have to worry about a wet basement. She is pleased to have a dry, safe home.

Jose L. and his team installed the solutions designed by Paul. Because there were multiple bowing walls, there were multiple types of solutions. To correct the settling foundation, Push Piers were installed. Push Piers stabilize the foundation and lift the foundation to its original position. These piers are made of galvanized steel, so they are sturdy and will not rust. Push Piers are secured to the footing and provide a permanent solution to restoring a settling foundation.

To restore the bowing walls, Geo-Lock Wall Anchors and PowerBrace were used. Both systems restore the walls to their original position and provide permanent support for the foundation. When possible, Geo-Lock Wall Anchors are used because they are driven into undisturbed soil. For one foundation wall, undisturbed soil was not accessible. For this wall, PowerBrace was installed. Both systems are made of galvanized steel, so they are durable, rust resistant and long-lasting solutions.

With Push Piers, Geo-Lock Wall Anchors and PowerBrace, Linda’s foundation is safe and stabilized. These systems provide permanent support to the foundation. Linda can rest easily knowing her foundation will not collapse.

The first solution to waterproofing the basement was WaterGuard. WaterGuard is a perimeter drainage system installed below the floor slab through minimally invasive work. This french drain system collects and guides water to the TripleSafe sump pump system. TripleSafe is equipped with a main pump, backup pump, and battery-powered pump to ensure the basement stays dry. On the discharge line, IceGuard was installed. IceGuard provides an exit for water in the event that discharge lines become frozen or clogged.

EverLast wall panels were used to finish the basement. EverLast is inorganic. If needed, it guides water to the WaterGuard. Because it is inorganic, these wall panels to do support mold growth. The panels create a clean, timeless look. The panels are 197% stronger than drywall, so these homeowners can be assured that this is a long-lasting look.

In addition to EverLast, the Woods Basement Systems team installed egress windows. These windows provide an beautiful view from the basement without the worry of water leaks. The basement was also completed with a linen ceiling, lights, and a half-bathroom.

The best solution for Michael was to install the CleanSpace® vapor barrier around the perimeter of the crawlspace and the floor, to install a drainage matting on the floor, and install a vent cover to keep out as much of the humid air as possible.

Foreman Joshua Bailey and his team came out to install the products. The project began with installing the vent cover over the existing vent-hole, which would control the humid air coming through. The team then laid down a dimpled drainage matting over the floor of the crawlspace, which would help control the moisture from the dirt floor. Over the top, the CleanSpace® vapor barrier was installed. This barrier was laid seamlessly throughout the crawlspace, and then mechanically fastened to the walls to ensure stability.

Woods Basement Systems is honored to work with the Illinois Department of Transportation to repair a hazardous highway. After careful consideration, PolyLEVEL was chosen as the fastest and most economical solution.

At the Interstate 64 and Illinois Highway 158 crossover in O’Fallon, Illinois, the concrete supporting the highway began to settle. The settling concrete caused cracking and made the roadway uneven and hazardous to drivers.

IDOT’s traditional method of repair, replacement would have cost over one hundred thousand dollars and taken several days to complete. Thanks to PolyLEVEL, the highway was restored within hours and the cost was a small fraction of the replacement cost. The PolyLEVEL injection holes are noninvasive and efficient. Only one lane of traffic was closed during the restoration. Within hours, both lanes were open.

Because concrete and the load it bears is heavy, and drainage systems sometimes fail, allowing water to collect under the concrete, the soil beneath it begins to settle over time. Whether on roadways or walkways, this settling causes cracking and unevenness and can be dangerous. Lightweight, but strong, the dense PolyLEVEL foam is a long-lasting, waterproof solution to restore any walkway, driveway or highway to a safe passageway.

Think PolyLEVEL can’t get any better? It is also environmentally friendly! It does not interact with the soil to release chemicals, and because it’s waterproof, it will not wash away.

PolyLEVEL is trusted by many home and business owners in Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri. IDOT was thrilled with the results of PolyLEVEL, and could see it being used in future road repairs.

To learn more about PolyLEVEL and how it works, or to request a free estimate please contact us at 1-844-254-7212.

Crawlspace Encapsulation in Trenton, IL

The best solution for preventative moisture control was our CleanSpace™ encapsulation system, the SaniDry™ dehumidification system, and the TripleSafe™ sump pump system. These three solutions put together will ensure the crawlspace remains dry, controlling the moisture that seeps in the crawlspace.

Installation begins with installing air-tight vents and air-sealing any openings into the crawlspace. We installed our TripleSafe™ sump pump system, which drains any water entering the crawlspace into a sump pump consisting of two pumps, where the second pump operates in the case the first one is overloaded or fails, and a battery-backup pump that operates in the case of a power outage. This way, homeowners can have piece of mind of keeping their crawlspace as dry as possible, even during a thunderstorm, if they are not at home.

The next step was to install the encapsulation system, consisting of a vapor barrier that prevents moisture from accumulating through the block walls and floor. Underneath the barrier lies a drainage matting that guides any water coming behind the barrier to the sump pump.

To further protect this homeowner's crawlspace, the SaniDry™ dehumidification system was installed. Any excessive moisture or humidity in this crawlspace will be removed, ensuring the area will remain clean and dry. The SaniDry™ can be set to proper humidity level, so the homeowner can be comfortable knowing the humidity level will not exceed what is set. By keeping moisture and humidty levels low, pests and mold cannot thrive.

These three solutions will control mold, dust mites, and mildew damage.

This homeowner in Trenton, IL had a dirt and gravel floor in their crawlspace, with old insulation falling from above. While the homeowners kept their crawlspace in good condition, the crawlspace was not renovated yet to keep out moisture. One of the most common problems in crawlspaces is moisture control, which, if not taken care of, can produce mold. The crawlspace vents can only do so much in regards to moisture control. This homeowner wants to prevent moisture from accumulating in the future, and have a solution that keeps the crawlspace dry. The challenge lies with calculating the perfect solution that is also permanent for this homeowner.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 2, 2015

St. Louis, MO – The cancer that kills the most people in the United States every year is also one of the most preventable, and Woods Basement Systems is ready to play a key role in the prevention of lung cancer. During Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November and every month, Woods Basement Systems is encouraging Missouri and Illinois homeowners to test their homes for radon, the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas that can seep into homes through cracks in the foundations, walls, crawl spaces and wells. Exposure to radon causes more than 20,000 cases of lung cancer in the United States each year.

Woods Basement Systems is working during November to spread the awareness about lung cancer. Here are a few facts about lung cancer:

it kills more people than breast and prostate cancers combined.

the survival rate for lung cancer is one of the lowest for those with cancer.

lung cancer surpasses breast cancer as the number one cause of death among women.

in many cases, lung cancer can be prevented.

Preventing lung cancer caused by radon exposure is easy and affordable. Woods Basement Systems provides do-it-yourself radon test kits for purchase, and the company has highly-trained radon experts available to provide free consulatations to design radon mitigate systems for homes and businesses. If levels are found to be above the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended maximum of 4 picocuries per liter of air, Woods Basement Systems can work with the homeowner to install an affordable and aesthetically pleasing mitigation system.
