A test flight as part of an annual inspection led to an emergency landing at Bridgeport Municipal Airport around 11 a.m. Tuesday

Houston-area pilot Randy Martin, the plane’s only occupant, landed the Piper Navajo aircraft smoothly. He was not injured.

Martin said he’d brought the plane to Barham Aviation Inc. (located at the airport) for the inspection two weeks ago and was in the air when he noticed a gear light was not on.

He made contact with Bob Barham and the two tried various procedures to alleviate the problem before notifying emergency personnel. Martin circled for about 20 minutes until emergency personnel arrived at the airport. He then made his descend onto the runway.

All electrical connections were shut off, forcing the pilot to rely on the plane to roll to a stop.

“From the way he landed the plane, I would say he is a very good pilot,” Bridgeport Police Chief Randy Singleton said. “He brought the airplane in slowly and landed it gently on the runway.”

The plane was then towed back to Barham Aviation for further inspection.

“It had locked up,” Barham said. “It could be a microswitch that’s off or a loose wire. We’ll take a look at it and try to figure it out.”

Martin, who has been flying since 1972, praised local first responders for their quick reaction.

“They’re great,” he said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better turn out.”

Bridgeport fire and police departments, State Troopers and Wise County EMS responded.

“These kinds of things make you wonder how many chances you get in life,” Martin said. “I know I’ve gone through a few of them. This one wasn’t as serious … but it could’ve been.”

Republican presidential candidate John Davis made a brief morning stop at the Courthouse Square this morning.

Republican presidential candidate John Davis made a brief morning stop at the Courthouse Square this morning. The conservative candiate from Grand Junctio, Colo., is on a mission to make a campaign stop at every county in the United States. He’s visited more than 1,900 of the 3,143 counties since he began his campaign almost a year ago. He visits between nine to 14 counties per day.

Brandishing a large wrench painted with the stars and stripes, Davis’ mission statement is “to fix America.”

“I’ve heard a lot of ideas of how to use this wrench in Washington,” he said.

Davis has never run for political office before now. He said God inspired him to run for office. He’s made a career as a homebuilder ever since he graduated high school.

“Everywhere I’ve been people are tired of career politicians being in office,” Davis said. “We can blame Obama and Bush and go back as far as your want, but we voted them into office. It’s up to us to stand up and make a difference.”

Despite having trouble getting on the primary ballot in most states, he’s not giving up.

“When God sends you on a mission you don’t give up,” he said. “I’m on this trip because I want to earn the right to serve the people.”

Thanks to a quick-acting bus driver, four students at Decatur’s Carson Elementary are safe today after a bridge collapsed under their school bus and left it perched perilously above fast-moving waters. “A wonderful job,” is what Decatur Superintendent Rod Townsend said of Debby Brady. “She did her job just exactly like it’s supposed to be done. She didn’t panic and did a really nice job.” The accident happened around 4 p.m. Thursday on Heritage Creek Drive about a mile north of County Road 4421. Runoff from Wednesday’s heavy rains washed out the bridge’s support structure. The roadway under the bus began to give way as Brady eased the front wheels onto the bridge. She immediately stopped the bus and had the three boys and one girl leave the bus by its front door, which is located behind the wheels. She then walked them home to their parents. No one was injured.

Longtime Boyd football coach and athletic director J.G. Cartwright announced Monday after a meeting with his players that he will be retiring at the end of the school year. Cartwright, who has been the Yellowjackets’ football coach for the past 35 years, said he turned in his paper work Friday, but wanted to wait until after he talked with athletes Monday before making the announcement. “Everyone I started out with has been retired several years,” Cartwright said. “It’s time I try to do something else.” Cartwright compiled a 274-122-5 record between 1977 and 2011. He guided the Yellowjackets to a pair of state championships in 1983 and 2004.

A fight at Bridgeport High School today sent one student to the hospital and at least one more to the police station for questioning. Two 16-year-old males got into a physical altercation in a campus bathroom shortly before 3 p.m. Medics arrived to find one of the boys unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. He was transported to North Texas Community Hospital in Bridgeport for his injuries where is in stable condition. Another student involved, who is being called a witness right now by investigators, was taken to Bridgeport Police Department for further questioning. The alleged assault might be part of ongoing dispute between the two boys at school. It’s unclear if more people were involved. Assault charges might be filed in the case, but all those involved will be treated as minors, said police chief Randy Singleton.

A lightning strike this morning caused a fire at a saltwater disposal well in the area of County Roads 4590 and 4591 off of Texas 114 a few miles west of Boyd. Four tank batteries caught fire, and heavy black smoke could be seen for miles. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion when the tanks were hit. An operator was on the scene and knocked back a bit when the lightning struck, but he was not injured. The lightning strike happened around 8:30 a.m. As of 9:45, two tank batteries remained on fire. Fire departments from Boyd, Cottondale, Paradise and Rhome responded. The well is owned by Green Tide Water Disposal. Disposal wells are used to inject waste water used in the process of gas exploration back into the ground.
