How to Avoid Zero-Seeders

More often than not, I end up finding the files I need through torrents, that is, after an excruciating while of browsing through non-working links and fake files from a plethora of torrent sites. What makes it excruciating for me is my habit to really read the comments and feedback regarding the torrents to confirm if they are the exact files I am looking for, and also to ensure if they are virus-free---and I do that hopping from one site to another. Time is gold, you know, and we cannot afford to throw gold away.

Fortunately though, we now have the convenience of search engines specifically made for torrents, one of which I find definitely saves my precious time is Torrents Search Engine. Yes, there are countless other torrent search engines at our dispense, but sadly, many of them feature so-called "dead" torrents, those with no seeders, and even leechers, thus only prolonging our search time. However, Torrents Search Engine is not among that bunch as it gives search results consisting ONLY LIVE AND ACTIVE TORRENTS for the files I'm looking for. Needless to say, it does make my search way more convenient and not excruciating anyhow anymore! :)

Most Needed Help for the Most Hated Subject

Back in my teenage years, I frequently questioned the necessity of Algebra and why some of my teachers always insisted for us to learn it as if our lives depended on it. I'm not saying I didn't do good on it, because in fact, I did well, i.e. with the personal help of my teachers---you see, I always tried to muster courage to ask them whenever I needed something clarified. The problem though was, I never really knew Algebra's utter importance. That is, not until College when I realized, Algebraic know-how is essential to a lot of the subjects I had to take. Thank God, I've had teachers who were approachable enough and had enough free time to be asked help from.

Sadly, that's not always true, especially now that classroom populations have grown, and that teachers are not always that approachable and that they always have too many to handle---take it from me, I've been a teacher for 2 years already. That brings me to the reality that tutors are now a must in today's generation (not to mention the fact that today's youth have shorter attention span than ever before, and the fact that Algebra has the reputation for being one of the most hated subjects around). HOWEVER, let us face the fact that it's hard to find tutors nowadays, let alone GOOD tutors---let alone EFFECTIVE tutors.

I'm no big fan of beatboxing. It just seems like anybody with a mouth and some air to match can do it. However, with someone as impassioned as this Aussie spitting out beats on some lazy UK street (where apparently he's a stranger), I just can't help but bop along.

Meet Dub Fx, psychedelic trip-hop extraordinaire. No, it's not hiphop as you know it friends—not even close. And, yes, he does virtually everything you hear on this song sans any instrument other than his mouth, and, well, a pedalboard to help him record loops on the spot—a man's got only one mouth after all.

Mary Poppins. Boooring. Or so I thought.

If ever you have the same opinion for that oh-so-gloried musical of the yesteryears, better think again--at least after seeing this amusing video, and hearing its amazing accompanying track by no less than Pogo a.k.a. Faggotron in the land of Youtube. This guy has a talent I've not seen among electronic artists in years: to make something so soothing and so refreshing from something so old and so boring, and I must add, in a way that doesn't sound cheesy at all. No, it's not a remix. No, it's not a remake. It's the delicate art of sampling Pogo seems to have mastered in his short time as a young weaver of tunes.

With this masterpiece in particular, he took sound clips from the mentioned classic, put in some ambient drum beats, liven it up with some fluid bass runs and dreamy synth lines, and *walah*, you get a rare gem of a song. Coupled with a sleekly edited video, I know you'll find it even more irresistible as I did. Just watch. Chill out. Enjoy.

I would have to say I love their previous releases better, but whatever Sleeping at Last did on Capture and Ghosts that literally captured the attention of rock icon Billy Corgan* surely has not dissipated as ghosts in their latest endeavor, Keep No Score. The band is currently in the studio, and to keep fans aflame as well as to ignite new ones, they've done what seems to be the wisest thing to do: offer this album for free. That is, if you choose to tell 5 of your friends about it through the widget below. However, you may also opt to pay whatever you want to show some love and support for this talented trio.

Lush instrumentation, ambient atmospherics, soaring vocals, intelligent imagery, a sound and a message distinctively their own--these are few of the many things that got this band on endless repeat on my iPod some years ago. Going Cap'n Planet with Your Web Hunt

I recently came across an article that explains how doing your searches in Google can emit 3.5 grams of carbon dioxide per query (the same probably goes for Yahoo too, since they use a similar interface). Albeit still a factoid denied by the company itself, it's quite alarming as that's approximately the same amount of energy consumed by an 11-watt light bulb in a measly hour. Also, doing it twice is enough to boil a kettle of water, so they say.

However, I must clarify I'm not here to make a fuss out of it. If like me though, you want your googling free of any guilt, or you simply want to be more certain you're not heating up this already hot planet of ours in any way, there is a good number of search engine alternatives you can resort to, two of which I highly recommend.

The first would be Blackle, the search engine that utilizes an all-black background so as to lessen the use of light on your screens. To date, Blackle has apparently saved 1,262,522.652 watt-hours already. A blogpost dated January 2007 even proposed the theory that with Blackle, we can save 750 megawatt hours in merely a year.

The other alternative which is easier to the eyes yet equally energy efficient is Znout, cleverly named as such because it promises zero negative out every time you hit that search button. Unlike the former though, this search engine does the Captain Planet without sacrificing readability--instead, it saves energy through the purchase of renewable energy certificates. Doing so, it claims to have saved 4,307,432 watt-hours so far.

Mind you, both are powered by Google Search thus ensuring you of search results as efficient as we're all used to. Also, just like Google, both have localized versions for whatever country you come from. Along with their other facets mentioned above, that leaves you virtually no reason why you wouldn't want to use these green alternatives. And that makes it rather an easy decision to make--I've made mine, have you?

I'm always on the lookout for fresh music, those that cut their own niche among billions of other songs. And when I say fresh, I mean either a new band, or an old band but with new material. For the former category, it is not that hard to search among the thousands of new talent coming out recently. For the latter, it's another story. Usually if old bands (i.e. those in the scene long enough to produce more than one album) is the case, should they have new material, it just doesn't sound new at all--more often than not, the ideas would sound recycled. But there are a few artists who are simply exceptions. Not only do their new material really sound novel, even their old stuff sound equally fresh despite being a few years old.

Rock quartet House of Heroes is one of the said exceptions. Every time they come up with new stuff, it always sounds novel. It's always aurally new, something not (if not only a bit) reminiscent of any of their past songs all the while retaining a distinct feel that is totally theirs, a sound that lets you easily determine it's them alright. Well, there's really a fine line of distinction between a band having a trademark sound and a band merely recycling ideas but when it's House of Heroes I guess you'd say what I just said--new or old, it always sounds fresh while it always sounds them. To know exactly what I mean, you just got to taste both.

Fortunately, you can do just that with this 2-week House of Heroes Freebies Special we have prepared just for you. When Cultures Collide

The meshing of cultures can be a mess at worst, but a beauty at best. Both ways however, it sure is a party!

It was my first and second year in College when I got to experience what it feels like when cultures collide. Upon entering my dorm room, I was welcomed by two double decks whose occupants I did not know yet, nor did I care, the introvert that I am. But come day two when it was well to my surprise, I got to be living with a Tausug, a Waray, and a Japanese. Different languages, different behaviors, different personalities, and not to mention, different religions (they were a Muslim, a Mormon, and an atheist, respectively)--in short, it was an adventure. Personally, that proved to be a challenge for me to break out of my shell, which of course was to my good. Months passed by and slowly I learned to appreciate our differences and man, did we have fun. Learning a bit from each of their languages, going on outings where I got to see the real soul beneath the person, poking at each others' personality quirks and trivial mannerisms, lengthy yet engaging discussions on religion, sharing memories of family and home--oh how I miss those days.

It is simply wonderful when cultures hodgepodge--quite like having a miniature version of the world right where you are. Okay, I give up. I give in. Although not a fan of the franchise myself (albeit Sendo apparently is), I have to admit it's an endless rave, a contagious fever, one that hasn't died down weeks or even months after the screening--the sensational Twilight, that is. And since that's obviously what most of you want, then that's what all of you should get (and few of you would bash me for, LOL). What amazes me is the dozens of freebies that show up when you google the movie's namesake. A large number of it are merely promotional gimmicks that's not worth the time checking out though. So we here at WHF decided to filter out the crap and leave out the best to save you time should you be on the hunt for some Bella and Edward goodies.

No Way Ima Shoot Those Cuties!

"There's no way I'ma shoot those cute critters," I whispered upon seeing the first Puki that approached me. But upon nearing it, cute turned scary as it jumped right at me flashing fangs only Dracula could've endowed them. Apparently, this cute critter which, according to the story was once my pet, turns out to be only one of the hundreds of albino vampire-like creatures that I have to shoot to survive Puki 3D, an excellently animated, simply endearing heckuva shooter.

What made it engaging for me is the fact that it's in first person, and we're not talking "stick figure" type of first person--which is very common among flash games today by the way--but 3-dimensional first person, proof that the game's creator is not that lazy after all. Albeit cartoon-like and simple, the deceptively charming gait of the Pukis as well as the bobbing and dodging of your head--the first person "camera" so to speak--totally makes up for the unsophisticated vectors, thus making it even more engaging.

When Robots Rebel: What To Do

Save me from boredom.

That was my silent plead as I searched the vastness of the interwebs. Then came Robo Riot, one of the culprits to these ever-darkening large bags under my eyes. You see, I just fancy the idea of robots. The idea of them developing their own will then revolting against human masters, I fancy even more--thus my infatuation to the Matrix anthology, particularly its history as told in the Animatrix. And if it were to happen for real, it would surely be FUN to be part of the special forces tasked to prevent the insurrection from furthering, which is exactly what Robo Riot gave me the chance to take part of.

Now you might get the idea that it's as complex as the movie/franchise I'm comparing it to, BUT don't fret, it's quite the opposite! A simple yet engaging game, it features 2 modes of straightforward yet easily enjoyable gameplay, one of which any bored net-zombie would certainly dig if only to pass time: a fresh idea for a puzzler, and a trigger-happy fast-sniping shooter.
