Overnutrition also increases the risk of stroke, probably by accelerating the development of obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, and diabetes. Reliable evidence suggests that dietary supplementation with antioxidant vitamins, B vitamins, and calcium does not reduce the risk of stroke. Less reliable evidence suggests that stroke can be prevented by diets that are prudent, aligned to the Mediterranean or DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, low in salt and added sugars, high in potassium, and meet, but do not exceed, energy requirements. Trials in progress are examining the effects of vitamin D and marine omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on incidence of stroke. Future challenges include the need to improve the quality of evidence linking many nutrients, foods, and dietary patterns to the risk of stroke." - link to full article: Nutrition and the risk of stroke : The Lancet Neurology

'via Blog this'

Myth: Carbohydrates are bad for your health

"In the recent past, no-carb and low-carb diets have demonized carbohydrates in the eyes of the public. "Eating more cereals and whole grains could reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer, a BMJ study says.

Researchers from Imperial College London found that for every 10g a day increase in fibre intake, there was a 10% drop in the risk of bowel cancer.

But their analysis of 25 previous studies found that fruit and vegetable fibre did not reduce risk.

A cancer charity called for more detailed research on the quantity and type of fibre to eat."

Further studies should report more detailed results, including those for subtypes of fibre and be stratified by other risk factors to rule out residual confounding. Further assessment of the impact of measurement errors on the risk estimates is also warranted.
It is rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods and reduced in red meat, fats, and sweets.
In order to help tackle the growing issue of illnesses relating to vitamin D deficiency such as Rickets, Kellogg's is adding vitamin D to all of its kids' cereals[1] in the UK."

Cause of Rickets

The primary cause of rickets is a vitamin D deficiency.[4] Vitamin D is required for proper calcium absorption from the gut. Sunlight, especially ultraviolet light, lets human skin cells convert Vitamin D from an inactive to active state. In the absence of vitamin D, dietary calcium is not properly absorbed, resulting in hypocalcaemia, leading to skeletal and dental deformities and neuromuscular symptoms, e.g. hyperexcitability. Foods that contain vitamin D include butter, eggs, fish liver oils, margarine, fortified milk and juice, and oily fishes such as tuna, herring, and salmon. A rare X-linked dominant form exists called Vitamin D resistant rickets.
Cases have been reported in Britain in recent years[5] of rickets in children of many social backgrounds caused by inability to make vitamin D because the sun's ultraviolet light was not reaching the skin because of persistent use of strong sunblock, or too much "covering up" in sunlight, or spending too much time indoors. Other cases have been reported among the children of some ethnic groups in which mothers avoid exposure to the sun for religious or cultural reasons, leading to a maternal shortage of vitamin D.[6][7] The British Medical Journal reported in 2010 that doctors in Newcastle on Tyne saw 20 cases of rickets per year. via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickets
If you find yourself within easy reach of Loch Kishorn, the Kishorn Seafood Bar is worth a visit. The squat lobster is a local delicacy.

"Squat lobster seems to be peculiar to the west coast. They are creel caught and are found just off the prawn ground on harder seabed. They taste a bit like a prawn but are sweeter. They do not travel as well as prawns so this may account for the fact that they are not so widely distributed. "
Lifestyle UK

"Vitamins were first discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century. At that time, states of complete deficiency were described, like scurvy, a fatal haemorrhage effect observed in sailors when they went without fresh fruit and vegetables for a long time (and thus vitamin C). Vitamins were subsequently described as follows: nutrients that are essential for life and which must be included in the human diet.

Today, we very rarely see extreme vitamin deficiencies anymore in the world, and especially not in the West. However, researchers have been continually uncovering evidence of the actions vitamins have on the body, which were hitherto unknown."

Actually, we need to feel as though we are in control. Perhaps that's why, when we aren't in control--can't be in control, for whatever reason--we instinctively seek ways of being more in control, or at least of feeling as though we are in control. I've often wondered if providing the illusion of control is part of the reason for the appeal of <strike>quackery</strike> alternative medicine, or, as it's become known these days, "complementary and alternative medicine" (CAM) or "integrative medicine" (IM). That, and the human need for certainty." Follow above link for full article.
Vitamin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism.[1] In other words, an organic chemical compound (or related set of compounds) is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. Thus, the term is conditional both on the circumstances and on the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a vitamin for humans, but not for most other animals, and biotin and vitamin D are required in the human diet only in certain circumstances. By convention, the term vitamin does not include other essential nutrients such as dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, or essential amino acids (which are needed in larger amounts than vitamins), nor does it encompass the large number of other nutrients that promote health but are otherwise required less often.[2] Thirteen vitamins are universally recognized at present." ...please follow link for full article
